Brace yourself for more hilariously awkward family moments as Universal announces a new Meet the Parents movie! Original stars Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller, Teri Polo, and Blythe Danner are in talks to reprise their iconic roles, with franchise writer John Hamburg penning the script. This comedy juggernaut, which first charmed audiences in 2000, saw its sequel, Meet the Fockers, rake in $522 million worldwide. Producers include De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, and Ben Stiller, but the director's chair remains unclaimed. While details are still hush-hush, fans can expect another uproarious family showdown. Stay tuned—this reunion promises chaos, laughs, and love!
Our exit today has us going to meet our significant other's parents and trying to make a good impression. This week, we are talking about Meet the Parents, written by Jim Herzfeld and John Hamburg based on a story by Greg Glienna and Mary Ruth Clarke, and our third film directed by Jay Roach. Is this a perfect Thanksgiving film? We think so! Along the way, we bring along Alex Perlman to reflect back on the cultural phenomenon that was this movie and why they don't make this like anymore. Plus, Get Out, Godspell and Oklahoma!, the movie stardom of Robert De Niro, and a long journey through the development of this idea and film. And also SNL sketches to film, smoking in movies, the anxiety this film creates, and our love of character actors (James Rebhorn alert!). Alex's website. "This is DVD" promo. WELCOME BACK! We're here with Eric's pick for ROM COMS and ON TIME! Haha, ANYWAY, this week's pick is from the early 2000's and comes from director John Hamburg and is a pick that Caleb guessed last episode, “Along Came Polly.” This is our THIRD Philip Seymour Hoffman film in an many months and we are HERE for it. We had an absolute blast talking about this film and even talked about poop for like 10 minutes…trust me…it gets wild. ENJOY! This week, we're back on the rom-com train with another selection from Hayley's collection, as we raise a blind ferret and get down with the scuba man. It's 2003's Along Came Polly, written and directed by John Hamburg, and starring Ben Stiller, Jennifer Aniston, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Debra Messing, Alec Baldwin, and Hank Azaria, along with countless other famous funny people who oddly aren't allowed to do anything funny in this film. It's one we come to out of appreciation for the late great PSH, and he gives an outstanding performance -- how much you love Mr. Hoffman may very well make this one worth watching for you, but sadly little else here registers. That's alright though: both hosts are fresh back from the theatre having seen Alex Garland's Civil War, and J Mo's got a bonus theatrical field report from Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. If you'd like to watch Along Came Polly before listening to this episode (and we do not recommend that you do), it is currently streaming on Starz at the time of publication. Other works discussed in this episode include King Kong (2005), Godzilla vs Kong, Men, Annihilation, Dredd, Bad Times at the El Royale, Fallout: The Series, Captain Marvel, Galaxy Quest, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, There's Something About Mary, When Harry Met Sally..., Duplex, Envy, Meet The Fockers, Tropic Thunder, Zoolander, Garden State, The Ben Stiller Show, Mystery Men, Flirting With Disaster, Keeping The Faith, Reality Bites, Empire Records, Singles, 30 Rock, Empire of the Sun, Heroes, The Wrestler, The Virgin Suicides, and The Iron Claw. We'll be back next week to wrap up the month with Hayley's nominee for April's canon induction, as we'll look back at Stephen Sommers' 1999 summer blockbuster The Mummy starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, coinciding with it's 25-year-anniversary theatrical re-release. The Mummy is currently streaming free on Tubi at the time of publication. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are forming an eternal and powerful bond of friendship. We watched the 2009 film from John Hamburg, I Love You, Man.If there's anything I know for certain, it's that long-lasting friendships are based on three things:Life-changing fish tacos.A deep and abiding love of the greatest band of all time, Rush. You've got to slappa da bass.Once you've got those three things covered, then the friendship is golden. Not even the concern from your fiancée about how close and weird you're getting with your new friend will be enough to derail the love.To all the incredible friendships out there, we salute you!(Recorded on September 14, 2023)Links to Stuff We Mentioned:I Love You, Man - The Movie Database (TMDB)I Love You, Man trailer - YouTubePaul Rudd — The Movie Database (TMDB)Ant-Man (2015) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Minority Report (2002) — The Movie Database (TMDB)The Big Bang Theory (TV Series 2007–2019) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Rush (band) - WikipediaThe Mandalorian (TV Series 2019- ) — The Movie Database (TMDB)J.K. Meet the Parents is a 2000 American comedy film written by Jim Herzfeld and John Hamburg and directed by Jay Roach. It chronicles a series of unfortunate events that befall a good-hearted but hapless nurse (Ben Stiller as Greg Focker) while visiting his girlfriend's parents (Robert De Niro as Jack Byrnes and Blythe Danner as Dina Byrnes). This week on The Treatment, Elvis sits down with Peabody Award winning comedian Hasan Minhaj, whose newest special is Netflix's “The King's Jester.” Then, actor and director Clea DuVall tells us about “High School,” the new Freevee series she's helming, based on the memoir by indie pop duo Tegan and Sara. And finally on The Treat, writer-director John Hamburg tells us why FX's “The Bear” makes him want to challenge himself.
At the Me Time premiere in LA, Netflix pulled out all the stops by having the entire cast stop by to talk about what this film means to them. We spoke with: Kevin Hart, Andrew Santino, Mark Wahlberg, Regina Hall, Bryan Smiley, Diane Delano, and John Hamburg. Hart said that this movie embraces fatherhood and wants to show that men can support their spouses -- all while having a good time and showing some fun. Meanwhile, Wahlberg said it never hurts to be that guy who enjoys some "me time" for a little while but praises Regina Hall, saying she was the real talent of the movie. The rest of the cast was excited to talk about their experiences, what they hope fans take away from the film, and more. Host: Monica Gleberman (@Monica1236) Editor: Marianna Randazzo Social Media Graphic: Jojo -- Synopsis: When a stay-at-home dad finds himself with some “me time” for the first time in years while his wife and kids are away, he reconnects with his former best friend for a wild weekend that nearly upends his life. *Me Time is currently streaming on Netflix Don't forget to follow us on Twitter @SilenceonSet and Instagram @SilenceonSetPod --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/silence-on-set/support
Unfortunately it seems that many filmmakers are holding back from making comedy films. Comedy is a necessary genre and thankfully we still have some filmmakers who are producing hilarious films that meet audience needs. John Hamburg, from Meet the Parents and Zoolander, shares his process for creating great comedies. In this episode, we talk about… Me Time, John's latest film that is now available on Netflix John's opinion on why there are less comedies on the big screen Finding out what needs improvement by the feedback given in test screenings John's experience writing for Meet the Parents and Zoolander Plot based comedies versus joke based comedies and which strategy John implements in his films Why John never directs actors to “be funny” The first step to writing a comedy film - Developing a character Find No Film School everywhere: On the Web https://nofilmschool.com/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/nofilmschool Twitter https://twitter.com/nofilmschool YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/nofilmschool Instagram https://www.instagram.com/nofilmschool Get your questions answered on the podcast by emailing editor@nofilmschool.com! “I was a comedy nerd kid,” said screenwriter John Hamburg. “Then I got a video camera for my 15th birthday, and I started making short films. In college, I started writing plays and monologues. Then I got serious about writing.” As a playwright, Hamburg said he learned the importance of writing and re-writing to the process. Eventually this led him to Film School and then a string of iconic comedies, like Meet the Parents, Zoolander, Along Came Polly, I Love You Man, Night School, and Me Time. In the latest film for Netflix, Hamburg is both the writer and director. The plot follows a dad (Kevin Hart) who finds time for himself for the first time in years while his wife and kids are away, so he reconnects with an old friend (Mark Wahlberg) for a wild weekend. This week on The Treatment, Elvis welcomes Oscar-winning director George Miller, whose newest film is “Three Thousand Years of Longing,” starring Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba. Next, “Me Time” director John Hamburg talks about why he keeps coming back to notions of masculinity in his films. And finally, for The Treat, “The Good Fight” creators Michelle and Robert King each pick a film that inspires them.
Starring Kevin Hart and Mark Wahlberg, Me Time follows a stay-at-home dad (Hart) who joins an old friend (Wahlberg) on a wild birthday adventure while his family is away. Writer-director John Hamburg discusses his approach to balancing character and laughs in a comedy: "I really do aim to keep the characters grounded and to treat them as human beings. Frankly, even in a movie as absurd as Zoolander, we tried to give an emotional arc to Derek Zoolander and to Hansel, and it's no different with this movie that takes place in the real world." Despite having hugely impressive titles like Zoolander and Along Came Polly under his belt, Hamburg still experiences insecurity as a filmmaker: "...it took me a while to stop [comparing myself to others], and I fall into that trap today, having been in the business for more than two decades... I think the advice I would give a younger, more naïve John Hamburg is, 'Just focus on yourself and listen; watch stuff, and get inspired.'" Me Time can be streamed on Netflix starting August 26. Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film. In this episode, we're freeloading rosemary flatbread paninis with 2009's bass-slapping bromance I LOVE YOU, MAN. Directed and co-written by John Hamburg - who had had huge success penning the scripts for Meet the Parents and Zoolander - this movie was the third collaboration for Jason Segel and Paul Rudd, who had previously worked together on the films Knocked Up and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Tonight we'll be discussing the unlikely connection between Sydney and Peter. Does this relationship touch on a kind of rush lots of us look for in our lives? [Watch the video interview on our YouTube Channel] Composer Theodore Shapiro sits down and talks in great depth about his career and recent works in this episode of All Access. Shapiro's filmography is unique in that his scores always seem to transcend genre boundaries and focus solely on the characters and emotional arcs no matter if the movie incorporates comedy, action, horror or drama. We talk at lengths about how he aspired to be a composer and that film composition came later down the road. The topic of typecasting comes up and Theodore talks about why it seems he tackles lots of comedies and action/comedies. We go into great lengths about building relationships and working with directors such as David Mamet, Ben Stiller and John Hamburg. Theodore also discusses his approach for certain films like The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty, Spy and his most recent score to Ghostbusters. We also touch upon the controversial backlash towards the new Ghostbusters and Theodore shares his whole view on the situation. Theodore Shapiro is such a great talent and a composer who has been able to build a unique sound as a storyteller whose music is admired by many. It was a great honor to have him as a guest.
