2002 American crime film directed by Sam Mendes
POPULARITY

Ask A Question: saythatpodcast@gmail.com thebridgechicago.tumblr.com/ask (Anonymous) I started thinking about it when I saw this on my Facebook and I started feeling confused. “Imagine what would happen if the single pursuit of Christians is not the lights, smoke machines, LED panels, charismatic preachers and thumping music but the presence of God during services.” What are your thoughts about this idea of God's presence? (13:35-29:44) How can I ask God to help me be a more optimistic person? Is that even something I should want? (29:50-45:01) Is it good to take time away from things to “focus on God”? It sounds good, but shouldn't we be focusing on God as part of our lives? (45:07-1:00:04) Closing Song: His Beloved (Lee Younger)

Rep. Dennis Riddell is known in the General Assembly as legislator for his effectiveness, persistence, and his Christian faith. However, the Alamance County Republican was on a far different path before he was brought to his knees at age 21 and was transformed forever. Rep. Riddell also talks about how he met his wife Polly, a family tragedy they endured, and his career as a social studies teacher, a merchant marine, and as a state legislator. Skye and Brian also unpack a relatively quiet spring break week in North Carolina politics, including the continuing Rep. Tricia Cotham news, a lawsuit filed, a high profile political endorsement, TOTW, and more. Following his breakout success with American Beauty, director Sam Mendes had a variety of projects to choose from, including films like A Beautiful Mind, K-PAX, and The Shipping News. Mendes chose instead to adapt a graphic novel about a hitman and his son on the run in the Prohibition Era Midwest. Starring Tom Hanks, Jude Law, Stanley Tucci, a pre-Bond Daniel Craig, and featuring Paul Newman in his last on-screen film role, the film draws on gangster flicks, Kurosawa, Once Upon a Time in America, and Lone Wolf and Cub to bring the story from page to screen. Nominated for six Academy Awards, cinematographer Conrad L. Hall won a posthumous Oscar for his work, and Tom Hanks himself counts his turn as hitman Michael Sullivan among his most underrated roles. Episode 2512: The Road To Perdition; Live Coverage From Iowa
This week on On Story we're joined by David Self, the writer behind films like Road to Perdition and Thirteen Days. In this episode, Self dissects his career breaking into the industry to writing crime and historical dramas. David Self, having been born into an itinerant family of community college and high school teachers, he broke with family tradition and spent most of his waking hours trying to break into Hollywood. In 1994 he found success and was hired to pen the remake of the 1963 film The Haunting for Steven Spielberg. His credits also include Road to Perdition, Thirteen Days, and Wolfman. Crime and thriller film, Road to Perdition, is an adaptation of the DC Comics graphic novel series of the same name. Starring Tom Hanks, it follows the story of a mob enforcer's son in 1930s Illinois who witnesses a murder, forcing him and his father to take to the road down a path of redemption and revenge. Thirteen Days is a tale of truths about how the Kennedy administration struggled to contain the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. The Haunting is a story about how a study of fear escalates into a heart-stopping nightmare for a professor and three subjects trapped in a mysterious mansion. Moderator Barbara Morgan sat down with David Self for a panel about his work at the Austin Film Festival. Clips of Thirteen Days courtesy of Beacon Pictures.
