What if lasting success isn't about what you achieve—but who you become? In this powerful episode, host Nicole Jansen sits down with Rusty Rueff—renowned tech executive, startup advisor, philanthropist, and co-author of Faith Code—to explore how inner purpose and spiritual identity provide the only truly unshakable foundation for life and leadership. Drawing from two decades of reflection, Rusty shares a compelling metaphor: Are you building your life on a solid platform (faith, values, purpose), or just stacking up flashy but fragile apps (titles, possessions, roles)? In this conversation, Nicole and Rusty unpack why true freedom, resilience, and fulfillment only come when you lead from your source code—a deep connection to something greater than yourself. From navigating profound personal loss and professional upheaval, to cultivating spiritual habits and daily disciplines, this episode offers practical insights and soul-level encouragement for leaders ready to build from the inside out. What You'll Learn: Why Faith Code was written and why these principles are more relevant than ever The “Platform vs. App” metaphor—and how it redefines success How to respond when your “apps” crash: job loss, health struggles, identity shifts How loss and disruption can become gateways to inner freedom Why love—God's love, self-love, and love for others—is the cornerstone of resilience The difference between loving as a feeling vs. loving as a verb How to realign your life through energy, time, and priority audits The daily disciplines that strengthen your platform What grows stronger as everything else fades—and why that's your true legacy Podcast Highlights 0:00 – Anchoring in a World of Change: Meet Rusty Rueff 2:01 – The Birth of Faith Code: Why Platform vs. App Matters 6:47 – Building on the Wrong Things: The Hidden Limits of “Apps” 8:19 – Your Source Code: Identity Anchored in Faith 11:18 – When the Apps Crash: Finding Freedom Through Loss 13:46 – God's Love: The Ultimate Platform 16:34 – Love as a Verb: Daily Choices That Build Resilience 19:38 – Rebuilding Priorities: Applying the Faith Code 23:34 – The Art of Time: Energy, Rhythm, and Alignment 27:28 – The Spirit That Grows Stronger with Time Memorable Quotes “Are you building your life as a platform or just stacking up apps? Your apps can crash. Your platform must endure.” “What's the one thing God gives that can't be taken away? His love. More reliable than the sunrise.” “Love isn't love unless it's acted on. In this episode of "Flourish or Fold," I am very excited to share my profound discussion with bestselling author and keynote speaker Davin Salvagno on themes that are near and dear to me, resilience and life purpose. This episode delves deep into the challenges people face and how these challenges can serve as invitations to discover and embrace their purpose. We discuss how life's challenges can serve as invitations to discover and embrace one's purpose. Davin shares personal experiences, including his recent move to Charlotte, North Carolina, highlighting that purpose is a continuous journey shaped by various moments. Davin emphasizes that resilience involves reframing challenges as growth opportunities. Below, we break down the key insights and actionable advice shared during this enlightening discussion.Understanding Purpose as a Continuous JourneyWe began by challenging the common notion that discovering one's purpose is a singular, life-defining moment. We reference a quote from Mark Twain, which states that the two most important days in a person's life are the day they are born and the day they discover their purpose. However, we both agree that this idea can be misleading.Key Takeaways:Purpose is Multifaceted: Purpose often manifests in multiple ways throughout our lives. It is not a single event but a series of moments and experiences that shape our understanding of who we are and what we are meant to do.Invitations and Signposts: Davin introduces the concept of "invitations" or "signposts" that guide individuals toward their purpose. These can be significant life events, challenges, or even subtle nudges that steer us in a particular direction.Actionable Advice:Reflect on Past Experiences: Take time to reflect on significant moments in your life. Identify patterns or recurring themes that may point toward your purpose.Stay Open to New Opportunities: Be open to new experiences and challenges, as they can serve as invitations to explore different aspects of your purpose.Reframing ChallengesDavin suggests a shift in mindset: challenges often happen for us, not to us. While some tragedies in life are inexplicable, most challenges can be reframed as opportunities for growth and learning.Key Takeaways:Growth Through Adversity: Challenges can serve as significant catalysts for uncovering our purpose. They often evoke deep emotions and lead us to want to help others facing similar struggles. No Pain is Wasted: Taryn resonates with this perspective, noting that every experience contributes to personal growth and character development.Actionable Advice:Reframe Your Challenges: When faced with a challenge, ask yourself what you can learn from the experience and how it can contribute to your growth.Seek Support: Surround yourself with supportive individuals who can help you navigate difficult times and provide perspective.Building ResilienceResilience is not just about enduring hardships but also about transforming those experiences into opportunities for growth and connection with others.Key Takeaways:Resilience as a Skill: Resilience can be cultivated through understanding that every experience contributes to our growth and understanding of who we are meant to be.Purpose Points: Davin introduces the concept of "purpose points," pivotal moments in life that shape one's character and understanding of purpose.Actionable Advice:Develop a Resilience Toolkit: Equip yourself with tools and strategies to build resilience, such as mindfulness practices, journaling, and seeking mentorship.Embrace the Journey: Understand that discovering your purpose is a continuous process. Embrace each moment and experience as part of your journey.Personal Challenges and SacrificesDavin shares his personal experience of moving to Charlotte, North Carolina, which he describes as one of the most challenging experiences of his life. This transition required significant sacrifices and brought about emotional struggles for his family.Key Takeaways:Prioritizing What Matters: Davin emphasizes the importance of being present for his family during this challenging time, allowing space for their emotions and struggles.Trust Over Clarity: He shares a quote from Mother Teresa, stating that she never had clarity, only trust, which resonates deeply with him during this season of uncertainty.Actionable Advice:Be Present: During times of transition, prioritize what is most important in each moment. Be present for yourself and your loved ones.Trust the Process: Even when the future is unclear, trust that your journey will reveal its purpose in time.Identifying and Combating Negative ThoughtsDavin discusses the concept of "thieves of purpose," which are thoughts that can rob individuals of their purpose and potential, such as comparison, fear, doubt, and the pursuit of success.Key Takeaways:Awareness of Negative Thoughts: Recognize and combat negative thoughts that undermine your sense of purpose.Success vs. Significance: While success can be fulfilling, it can also distract from the deeper significance of life, which lies in making a meaningful impact on others.Actionable Advice:Practice Self-Awareness: Regularly check in with yourself to identify any negative thoughts or beliefs that may be holding you back.Focus on Impact: Shift your focus from pursuing success to making a meaningful impact on others. This episode of "Flourish or Fold" serves as a powerful reminder that resilience and purpose are intricately connected. Listeners are encouraged to embrace their challenges as integral parts of their journey toward discovering and fulfilling their purpose. By reframing challenges, building resilience, and staying open to new opportunities, we can navigate life's transitions with trust and confidence.Final Thoughts:This episode is a treasure trove of wisdom and practical advice for anyone navigating their own path toward resilience and purpose. Whether you're facing a major life transition or simply seeking to understand your purpose better, Davin's insights will inspire and guide you.Embrace the Journey: Remember that discovering your purpose is a continuous process filled with various moments and experiences.Cultivate Resilience: Equip yourself with the tools and strategies to build resilience and transform challenges into opportunities for growth.Trust the Process: Even when the future is unclear, trust that your journey will reveal its purpose in time.By following these insights and actionable advice, you can navigate As a teenager, he drank sporadically, sometimes just once a week, other times six or seven in a night, but never considered it a problem. That changed in his 40s during COVID. Joe and his wife, Heather, drank more, made poor dietary choices, and formed unhealthy habits to cope with the pandemic. Eventually, their health metrics indicated a change was needed. One hungover day, they pledged to stop drinking for 75 days. Initially tough, Joe's cravings gradually subsided. Some nights, though, he still craved a beer, leading him to non-alcoholic options that satisfied him. As the world reopened, Joe and Heather struggled to maintain their new habits in social settings dominated by alcohol. They enjoyed bars but missed non-alcoholic options. This sparked the idea of Go Brewing: non-alcoholic and low-alcohol beer with a taproom featuring great music and entertainment. In less than 18 months, Joe and Heather built an incredible team, created numerous recipes, and collaborated with top brewers and consultants. Now, they've opened their doors both online and at their taproom.

In our latest episode of the Women in Leadership Podcast, I'm thrilled to have Karen Grosz, creator of Canvas Creek Team Building and the author of Quiet Leadership, joins me to talk about the essence of true leadership, overcoming personal and professional challenges, and the power of positive self-description Karen shares an inspiring personal anecdote and discusses the significance of identifying one's passion and desires. She addresses rebounding from failures, introspection, and supporting oneself during times of change. From navigating personal and professional upheavals during the COVID-19 pandemic to overcoming high school insecurities, Karen's story is a powerful testament to resilience and self-discovery Let's transform the way we lead by embracing our true potential and supporting each other on this journey. Here are 3 key takeaways from this powerful episode: Challenge the Status Quo: True leaders have a unique perspective and aren't afraid to question the norm. Find mentors who align with your approach and style. Embrace Failure: Viewing failure as a transparent learning process helps not only in personal growth but also in empowering others. Karen's journey exemplifies resilience and the power of rebounding. Define Personal Goals: Especially for women, it's crucial to prioritize your passions and desires. Dropping negative self-descriptions and focusing on positive attributes can pave the way to clear, intentional goal-setting. In Eric's Words: I used to be miserable. I had spent my whole life exceeding expectations, and eventually landed a dream job at Google, tasked with responsibilities that felt so important that I could not fail. But a couple years later, I was working 8am to midnight every day, including most weekends, drowning in emails and meetings and tasks, feeling stuck with no idea how my life was ever going to change. Now my work is meaningful and inspiring to me, and I work when I choose. I spend quality time with my family, while still having time for my own pursuits. I am designing my own life, day by day, to create impact in alignment with my values. What changed? I realized I had a choice. I could keep going as I had been, letting my success be defined by the expectations of others. Or I could find a new path, one where I chose my own success. As part of redesigning my life, I became an executive coach, helping leaders grow their impact by sharing the principles and mindsets that I had used to change my own life. People can be 'influencers' without necessarily having real 'influence.' In the context of B2B, brands (and their leaders) who have influence focus on elevating others, rather than themselves. In his book, “Secrets of Influence,” Matt Brown dives into the heart of what influence truly means, highlighting that real influence isn't about vanity metrics but meaningful impact. In this episode of Closing Time, Matt helps B2B sellers and marketers create their own influence, and harness the influence of others, which might be the missing ingredients your brand needs.Want to better align your go-to-market teams?
