In this episode of Relationships Rule, I had a great conversation with Mike Desjardins, CEO of ViRTUS, about what leadership really looks like when it's grounded in relationships. We started with a powerful idea, that leadership has very little to do with titles or results, and everything to do with whether people actually want to follow you. From there, our conversation unfolded into a thoughtful exploration of emotional intelligence, trust, and the small, intentional actions that make a big difference in business relationships.Mike shared how his work focuses on developing leaders at every level, and why emotional intelligence is the foundation that everything else is built on. We talked about the importance of listening for understanding, not agreement, and how that simple shift can completely change the way we communicate and resolve conflict. One of my favorite parts of our conversation was hearing how Mike and his team create meaningful client relationships through thoughtful, personalized gestures. These are not big, flashy moments, but small, intentional actions that show people they are truly seen and valued. We also explored how leaders can build trust by consistently asking for feedback, empowering their teams to take initiative, and creating a culture where people feel heard and supported. This episode is a wonderful reminder that business is built on relationships, and that the way we show up as leaders has a lasting impact on everyone around us.Key TakeawaysLeadership is defined by followership, not titles or authorityEmotional intelligence is the foundation of effective leadershipListening for understanding builds trust and reduces conflictSmall, thoughtful gestures can have a lasting impact on relationshipsTrust is built through consistency, feedback, and genuine careMike can be found at:mikedesjardins.com (Blog)virtusinc.com (Company)In appreciation for being here, I have some gifts for you:A LinkedIn Checklist for setting up your fully optimized Profile:An opportunity to test drive the Follow Up system I recommend by checking this presentation page - you won't regret it.AND … Don't forget to connect with me on LinkedIn and be eligible for my complimentary LinkedIn profile audit – I do one each month for a lucky listener!Connect with me:http://JanicePorter.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/janiceporter/https://www.facebook.com/janiceporter1https://www.instagram.com/socjanice/Thanks for listening! Thanks so much for listening to our podcast! On this episode of The Jon Gordon Podcast, I sit down with Lauren Craddock—author, educator, and leading voice on living intentionally—for an eye-opening conversation about her journey from clutter and overwhelm to clarity, impact, and living with purpose. Lauren shares her personal transformation from battling "collector at heart" tendencies in her home to uncovering the deeper reasons behind clutter and consumerism. She candidly describes the "perspective pivot" that changed her life, how she learned to curate her space based on what she truly uses, loves, and needs, and the power of letting go—not just of stuff, but of the scarcity mindset and guilt that keep so many stuck. Together, we dig into the heart of Lauren's book, Own with Intention, exploring her signature practices like the Mindful Exchange, counting the inflow, and practical steps for couples and families with different approaches to their stuff. Lauren explains why minimalism isn't about owning less for its own sake, but about creating space for more of what matters—energy, focus, connection, and making a meaningful impact. If you've ever struggled to release the things weighing you down, or you want to live a more intentional, empowered life in your home and beyond, this episode is a reminder that you can own your story, your space, and your future—one intentional step at a time. Register to join Lauren for her book launch on May 4th! - JOIN US HERE About Lauren, Lauren Craddock is the creator of Own with Intention, a framework that helps people reclaim their time and focus by intentionally choosing what stays in their lives. Bruce Wydick is an economist, professor, and author of Shrewd Samaritan: Faith, Economics, and the Road to Loving Our Global Neighbor. As his faith deepened throughout his college career, Bruce developed an unexpected passion for economic development and the role of the Church. The more he researched, the more he realized a great need for Christian NGOs to be able to measure the impact they're having on the people they've been called to help.   Bruce helped start the Collaborative for Econometrics and Integrated Development Studies (CEIDS), which has grown into a network of more than 100 development economists, public health experts, and other related fields from all around the world. Together, they work to support the relief and development arms of Christ's global Church by helping Christian NGOs develop tools and built-in programs so that they and their donors can know where, how, and why they're truly being effective.   Bruce brings a rare blend of heartfelt, Spirit-led generosity and a data-driven focus on high impact giving to help followers of Jesus love our neighbors with wisdom by investing resources in ways that truly change lives for the Kingdom. Bruce shares stories from his research and his own journey of faith, emphasizing that generosity isn't just about good intentions but about stewarding God's gifts so that they bear lasting fruit.   Major Topics Include: Blending faith and economic development  The Story of Mayan Partners in Guatemala The biblical picture of human flourishing The challenge of impact measurement for Christian NGOs Making informed, Spirit-led giving decisions Stages of a heart-progression on world problems: The Six i's—ignorance, indifference, idealism, investigation, introspection, impact Developing an identity with those you're called to serve Understanding poverty traps as a giver Measuring impact through randomized control trials and quasi-experimental designs How givers can use AI to research the most impactful interventions Examples of the most effective and ineffective interventions QUOTES TO REMEMBER “The Kingdom works the opposite of the way that economics says the world should work.” “We should not only be good Samaritans, but shrewd Samaritans, that we actively think about what we do, as well as we pray and feel led by the heart.” “The poor are important enough to Christ that we owe them an informed decision on how we give and not just a feeling-based decision.” “What is the role that God has placed me in?” “It's not about one person saving the world. It's about one person listening to God and His calling on our lives to serve where He wants us to serve.” “If we understand where there's a need and then see where our gifting lines up with that need, God will bring about His biblically-based human flourishing in that intersection.” “Providing cash is almost always better than providing stuff.” “The earlier you intervene in a child's life, the more impactful it is.” LINKS FROM THE SHOW Shrewd Samaritan by Bruce Wydick Collaborative for Econometrics and Integrated Development Studies (CEIDS) Social Impact Analytics Course at University of San Francisco Compassion International Children of the Nations International Care Ministries Mayan Partners Hope Walks The Finish Line Community Facebook Group The Finish Line Community LinkedIn Group WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! Episode Summary:Andrew shares the tragic story that changed his career: a couple delayed retirement until reaching a financial milestone, only for the wife to pass away before they could enjoy it. This moment reshaped his mission from managing money to helping people retire with confidence. He breaks down the three pillars of financial planning, explains how small spending habits reflect deeper priorities, and offers strategies that help clients shift from fear to freedom. He also challenges conventional advice on Social Security and urges listeners to take action, not just make plans. About the Guest:Andrew LaFontain began as a CPA at a Big Five firm before transitioning to financial planning over 20 years ago. Based in Wisconsin, he works with clients nationwide and authored the Amazon bestseller "Beyond Enough."  Key Concepts Explained:The Three Pillars of Financial Planning: Resource Allocation – Managing money, time, and energy Retirement Income – Replacing your paycheck post-career Risk Management – Protecting against disruptionsTrue planning must address all three; focusing on one weakens the whole strategy.Beyond Enough Philosophy: Most people want to leave a legacy, but hesitate until they feel secure. Confidence enables generosity, purpose, and freedom to live meaningfully.Henry & Ava's Story: Despite having enough, Henry delayed retirement for a $2M goal. When they reached it, Ava passed away. They never fulfilled their dreams—not from lack of money, but lack of confidence.Practical Strategies:The $1,000 Rule: Cutting $1,000/month reduces retirement needs by ~$300,000 (4% rule). If invested over 15 years at 8%, it grows to over $129,000—boosting both savings and flexibility. The Pizza Story: Andrew's family spent $6,000/year on pizza—a surprise revealed during a spending review. It's a light-hearted example of how small, unconscious habits add up.Three-Bucket Retirement System:Bucket 1: 1–3 years of cash for near-term needsBucket 2: Mid-term investments to refill Bucket 1Bucket 3: Long-term growth for legacy or careThis system cushions clients from market swings and supports steady income.Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs): After age 70½, people can donate directly from IRAs to charities, tax-free. It's a simple, underused way to increase impact without increasing out-of-pocket costs.Challenging Conventional Wisdom:Social Security Timing: Waiting until 70 isn't always best. Andrew shares a case where retiring at full retirement age gave a couple three extra years together—time they couldn't reclaim by waiting. Why Financial Plans Collect Dust: Most plans fail not because they're wrong—but because no one follows through. Andrew stresses the role of accountability: advisors, spouses, mentors who help ensure action.Taking Action:Confidence comes from clarity—and clarity requires action. Andrew urges listeners to reflect on their values, realign spending with purpose, and take the first step toward impact.Connect with Andrew:• Book: Beyond Enough (on Amazon)• LinkedIn: Andrew LaFontain (Brookfield, Wisconsin)“The goal isn't just retirement—it's confidence. Why This Episode Is a Must-Listen In an era where philanthropy is rapidly evolving—spanning from billion-dollar foundations to viral crowdfunding and crypto donations—how can we ensure our giving actually makes a difference? This episode of Inspired Money brings together an expert panel of changemakers to reveal how generosity can be smarter, more inclusive, and more impactful. Whether you're a business leader aligning profit with purpose, a non-profit professional seeking fresh strategies, or someone passionate about making a difference, this discussion spotlights actionable ways to maximize your impact. Meet the Expert Panelists Jacob Harold is a social change strategist and author of The Toolbox: Strategies for Crafting Social Impact. He is the former President & CEO of GuideStar, co-founder of Candid and Project Starling, a Planetary Fellow at the Berggruen Institute, and Senior Advisor at Rewiring America, with a career spanning philanthropy, nonprofit innovation, and climate advocacy. www.craftingimpact.org Jamie Minden is the Executive Director at Zero Hour, a youth-led climate justice organization mobilizing communities to take action against the climate crisis. A seasoned organizer since age 13, she has led efforts with Sunrise Movement Silicon Valley, Fridays For Future D.C., and the Monterey Bay Aquarium, bringing powerful grassroots strategy and storytelling shaped by her firsthand experience with California's climate disasters. https://thisiszerohour.org Bruno Fierens is a fifth-generation member of a wealthy Belgian family and the first Belgian member of Millionaires for Humanity, an organization advocating for fairer taxation and a more just global system. Reflecting on issues like sustainability, the fight against poverty, his privileged position in society and his experiences with philanthropy, kept leading him to the same conclusion: “if someone like me is really serious about changing things for the better, fairer taxation is the core issue to act on”. He is a media trainer and former spokesperson based in Brussels and holds master's degrees in political science and communication. www.brunofierensmediatraining.be https://millionairesforhumanity.org Key Highlights 1. Philanthropy: More Than Writing Checks Jacob Harold emphasizes that strategic philanthropy requires more than reacting to symptoms; it's about “thinking structures, long-term impact, and tapping into a toolbox of solutions—from data to community organizing to storytelling.” He challenges us to ask: Are we using all the tools available, and are we learning as we give? 2. Tackling Systemic Issues Over Band-Aid Solutions Bruno Fierens shares his journey—including tangible success and frustration—supporting homeless initiatives in Brussels. His perspective: “Philanthropy is amazing and needed, but it's almost always going to work on symptoms—not enough on structural issues.” Bruno argues for systemic approaches like fair taxation alongside charitable giving. 3. Youth-Driven Action for Climate Solutions Jamie Minden highlights how today's young leaders, born into the climate crisis, are pushing philanthropy toward supporting community-driven and policy-level change. She shares, “Investing in grassroots organizations addressing policy and social change right now is vital if we want to turn the tide on climate.” 4. The Power—and Perils—of Modern Giving Platforms Panelists discuss the transformative role of technology: from social media amplifying grassroots movements to the promise (and pitfalls) of AI and blockchain in making data-driven giving decisions. Caution is raised to prioritize ethical philanthropy that elevates community needs over donor preferences, to avoid what's described as “philanthropic colonialism.” Call-to-Action

What if lasting success isn't about what you achieve—but who you become? In this powerful episode, host Nicole Jansen sits down with Rusty Rueff—renowned tech executive, startup advisor, philanthropist, and co-author of Faith Code—to explore how inner purpose and spiritual identity provide the only truly unshakable foundation for life and leadership. Drawing from two decades of reflection, Rusty shares a compelling metaphor: Are you building your life on a solid platform (faith, values, purpose), or just stacking up flashy but fragile apps (titles, possessions, roles)? In this conversation, Nicole and Rusty unpack why true freedom, resilience, and fulfillment only come when you lead from your source code—a deep connection to something greater than yourself. From navigating profound personal loss and professional upheaval, to cultivating spiritual habits and daily disciplines, this episode offers practical insights and soul-level encouragement for leaders ready to build from the inside out. What You'll Learn: Why Faith Code was written and why these principles are more relevant than ever The “Platform vs. App” metaphor—and how it redefines success How to respond when your “apps” crash: job loss, health struggles, identity shifts How loss and disruption can become gateways to inner freedom Why love—God's love, self-love, and love for others—is the cornerstone of resilience The difference between loving as a feeling vs. loving as a verb How to realign your life through energy, time, and priority audits The daily disciplines that strengthen your platform What grows stronger as everything else fades—and why that's your true legacy Podcast Highlights 0:00 – Anchoring in a World of Change: Meet Rusty Rueff 2:01 – The Birth of Faith Code: Why Platform vs. App Matters 6:47 – Building on the Wrong Things: The Hidden Limits of “Apps” 8:19 – Your Source Code: Identity Anchored in Faith 11:18 – When the Apps Crash: Finding Freedom Through Loss 13:46 – God's Love: The Ultimate Platform 16:34 – Love as a Verb: Daily Choices That Build Resilience 19:38 – Rebuilding Priorities: Applying the Faith Code 23:34 – The Art of Time: Energy, Rhythm, and Alignment 27:28 – The Spirit That Grows Stronger with Time Memorable Quotes “Are you building your life as a platform or just stacking up apps? As a teenager, he drank sporadically, sometimes just once a week, other times six or seven in a night, but never considered it a problem. That changed in his 40s during COVID. Joe and his wife, Heather, drank more, made poor dietary choices, and formed unhealthy habits to cope with the pandemic. Eventually, their health metrics indicated a change was needed. One hungover day, they pledged to stop drinking for 75 days. Initially tough, Joe's cravings gradually subsided. Some nights, though, he still craved a beer, leading him to non-alcoholic options that satisfied him. As the world reopened, Joe and Heather struggled to maintain their new habits in social settings dominated by alcohol. They enjoyed bars but missed non-alcoholic options. This sparked the idea of Go Brewing: non-alcoholic and low-alcohol beer with a taproom featuring great music and entertainment. In less than 18 months, Joe and Heather built an incredible team, created numerous recipes, and collaborated with top brewers and consultants. Now, they've opened their doors both online and at their taproom.
