Our viewers love to tune up their ears by hearing submissions for a hot request from TAXI, then casting their votes to see if they line up with what our A&R team decided. One of our regular viewers summed it up nicely when she emailed, "Judging songs on TAXI TV helps me judge my own music more objectively. I create better music because of these episodes, please do more of them!" Join us for the fun, the education, and the community spirit in the live chat room during this week's episode of TAXI TV! Here's the request we sent out! UPLIFTING SINGER/SONGWRITER SONGS with Male or Female Vocals are needed by an A-List Film/TV Music Publishing Company that typically gets really nice, HIGH-END placements! These guys are thought of as being "a cut above." This Company is looking for Mid-to-Up-Tempo Songs in the general stylistic ballpark of the following references: "Missing Piece" by Vance Joy "Bridges" by Johnnyswim "Home" by Phillip Phillips "This Is Our Time" by WILD Quoting the Company: "We're looking for Songs with uplifting, non-romantic lyrics. Anything about friendship, being there for each other, overcoming challenges, being confident, having gratitude, being joyful, etc." Please send top-notch Singer/Songwriter Songs with great melodies, super memorable choruses, engaging rhythms, and well-crafted, emotionally upbeat lyrics. Instrumentation that's generally similar to the references will suit your submissions well. If you plan on using any virtual instruments or samples, they should be high-quality and fresh. Polished production and expressive, well-performed vocals are musts for this pitch, as well! NOTE: This Company doesn't want to hear Songs that sound like typical library music. They're interested in finding stuff that sounds like commercial, releasable Songs ready for the radio. If you're an artist or band with an online presence, even better! Avoiding specific names, places, dates, times, brands, and profanity are recommended. Do NOT copy the referenced artists or songs in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a guide for tempo, texture, and tone. Do NOT submit any material with unauthorized samples of any other artists' music, sounds, or any other form of media. Broadcast Quality is needed. This company offers an EXCLUSIVE deal. You'll split all upfront sync fees 50/50. The Publisher will get 100% of the Publisher's share, and you'll get 100% of the Writer's share. You must own or control your Master and Copyright. Since this is an EXCLUSIVE deal, please be sure the material you submit for this pitch is NOT already signed with other Libraries or Catalogs. Please submit as many Songs as you'd like, online or per CD. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by TAXI. Submissions must be received no later than 11:59 PM (PST) on Monday, November 15th, 2021. TAXI # S211115TF

On this episode of BETTER THAN MONKEYS, we get to spend a few minutes talking with a true legend in the music world. A platinum album selling songstress with more than 55 albums created over the course of her illustrious career, her recording of Joni Mitchell's BOTH SIDES NOW is in the GRAMMY HALL OF FAME and her recording of Stephen Sondheim's SEND IN THE CLOWNS won song of the year at the 1975 Grammy Awards. She is author, mentor, social activist and singer/songwriter, JUDY COLLINS.
We discussed the creative process with singer, songwriter, and music producer, Stella Santana. The daughter of legendary musician Carlos Santana, Stella has music in her bones, and a sound and style all her own. She possesses the valuable skill of being a "doer", something that will take her far in the entertainment business. We touch on the inspiring way in which she navigates her work as a creative, her process, and her vision. From her time spent studying to be a life coach to her memories of meditating as a family, we see how and what has shaped Stella and continues to shape her music, vision and style. Speaking of style: we (of course) got the scoop on this tastemaker's favorite books, favorite NYC restaurants, go-to skincare, and more.
My guest today is Tahira Clayton. Tahira is a soulful singer, songwriter, music teacher and conductor. Tahira’s name translates as purity of light and that she is! I see, hear and feel light when I am in Tahira’s presence - she is tuned in, gracious, open and compassionate - radiating light both on and off stage! Growing up in Texas, Tahira explained that her family was one of 3 black families that lived in an otherwise white neighborhood. Tahira didn’t want to stick out, she didn’t want anything that was going to make her seem more different than she already was. She acknowledges the irony that she figured out who she was while denying the biggest part of her. Tahira remembers when that self consciousness of her race dissipated and she finally felt proud to be black, she began to confidently express herself as a strong black woman. We recorded this conversation with Tahira in the fall of 2018, intentionally waiting to release this podcast so we could promote her album release show. However, in addition to waiting for the album release date, her beloved partner, Addison Frei (featured in Episode #43) pulled off a spectacular, romantic surprise marriage proposal (with her whole family sworn to secrecy) over Thanksgiving 2018. Blessings Tahira and Addison!! In early December, Tahira came as my guest to see The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater perform at City Center (NYC), her first time seeing the company! We were both blown away, not only by the company’s signature dance “Revelations", but by the world premiere of Rennie Harris’ "Lazarus I and II", this piece is a MUST SEE!! Please join me on Thursday February 28th, 2019 at 8pm to celebrate Tahira’s album release show at Nublu, 151 Ave C, New York City. Check out the links below for the latest events in Tahira’s life, as well as her website where you can hear her music and find out about all her exciting projects. For our UK listeners, Tahira will be traveling to London on March 9th, 2019 to be part of a panel on systemic exclusion of women in jazz at the International Women in Music Leadership Conference. My guest today is Kathryn Selman (also known as Kat). I had the honor of officiating Kathryn’s wedding last summer at a beautiful barn, called Gratitude and Grace, 2 attributes that capture Kathryn and her husband, Stephen. Kat is a vocalist, singer-songwriter, music educator and most recently a marketing director for the Brooklyn Music Factory. Kat gracefully blends jazz, Brazilian and pop, into her compositions, and is about to release her first album. Ross Pederson, my guest last week, produced, mixed and played drums on Kathryn’s record, along with being musical director in the studio. She is so grateful to Ross for helping shape the record. Kathryn is a self taught ukulele and mandolin player, and recently picked up the electric bass, which she now plays in an all female punk band called Ladybits! In addition to music, Kathryn loves learning, as she cultivates her many interests, gifts and passions. She invests time and energy in crafts, nature, innovative projects, nutrition, travel and social justice activism. Come hear and support Kathryn at her record release show on Sunday July 15th 5-6pm at Rockwood Music Hall in NYC. Enjoy the podcast! The Southern California hard rock band Swirl, A hard rock band with a strong message of standing up for what you believe in and for music, was formed by guitarist Duane “DT” Jones in Washington State and went on to release their debut CD Out Of Nowhere, produced by Carlos Cavazo (RATT/ Quiet Riot) and Matt Thorr (Rough Cutt, Jailhouse) and toured the United States and Japan in the early 2000’s to moderate success. However, Swirl’s live shows, which are high octane and packed with fans gained them a large and devoted following, second up a national tour between 2008 and 2009. They travelled over 50,000 supporting acts like RATT, Extreme, Cinderella, Slaughter, LA Guns, Souls of We, Red Dragon Cartel, Skid Row and headlining their own shows. Between 2011- 2012 Swirl had a musical makeover and began writing and recording new music outside of the LA area, releasing the album, SWIRL. You have heard and maybe seen Maggie McClure on TV or the big screen. Her songs have energized TV shows such as Dr. Phil, Cougar Town, The Real World, The Vineyard, and The Hills, as well as in feature films like Cowgirls N’ Angels. Born in Oklahoma but now based in LA, McClure has perfected a style of smooth, confessional songwriting that not only deepens the emotion that directors and show runners crave, but also has powered her through more than 1000 shows in over 40 states opening for Sara Bareilles, Alicia Witt, Walk Off The Earth, Tony Lucca, and others. Her third and newest album, Time Moves On -- produced by Justin Glasco, chronicles her move from Oklahoma to LA and what it took to build a career in this vast, competitive music capital.
