Episode 77 - Pack your bags, we're headed to... heaven? Well for week one we are still in Japan, and depending on whether or not you are talking to Marco, it's all the same. Yes, Marco is bringing us a month of Catholic films, and the first one we are watching is Silence (1971) from the director Shinoda. This film is based on a novel which is based on a true story of the persecution of Catholics in feudal Japan, and a foreign priest who is looking for his mentor who went missing. This was remade by Scorcese in 2016 and stars Liam Neeson and Adam Driver, but we are going back to the OG. We went into a bit of a religious vortex so don't miss out on that.and email us at mracfilmclub@gmail.com

Masahiro Shinoda, a film director known for his unique Japanese aesthetic style, died of pneumonia on Tuesday. He was 94.
Linkin Park's third album arrived after delays and side projects from members of the band, but arrived with “honed, metallic pop with a hip hop stride and a wake-up kick”.“Minutes” is a roller coaster of emotion, including vicious anger, political rants, forlorn musings on lost love, and a heartbreaking final request that came to pass far too soon.Today's root beer is Boot's Sarsaparilla. This time, Shinoda's "island" films, with Island of the Evil Spirits and Captive's Island, two films with excellent cinematography and a mixed bag on story.... listen in and discover which film we highly recommend and which one you can happily skip.

There's a recommendation schools put clearer relationship and sexuality education in place. An Education Review Office report has found too much inconsistency in what students are learning. It calls on secondary schools to increase sex-ed teaching and tell parents what will be taught, rather than consulting them. It also found young people are being exposed to risks, particularly online. Education evaluation centre lead Ruth Shinoda says the curriculum should be revised. She told Heather du Plessis-Allan that schools should be required to inform and explain to parents what they're going to teach, as they found that parents are more comfortable with the curriculum when they're better informed. More schools are dropping NCEA Level 1. An Education Review Office review has found it's not a fair or reliable measure of knowledge and skills, and needs substantial change. Less than three-quarters of schools plan to offer NCEA Level 1 next year. ERO's Ruth Shinoda told Mike Hosking that in more affluent communities, it's less than half. She says three quarters of school leaders say the credits students receive don't reflect an equal amount of work or degree of difficulty. The Education Review Office says there's a chronic absence crisis. This Term 2, one in ten students were chronically absent. Chronic absence has doubled in secondary schools since 2015, and almost tripling in primary schools. By age 20, chronically absent students can cost the state three times more than a student who went to school. ERO Ruth Shinoda told Mike Hosking the education they're missing out on damages their life chances. She says less than half get NCEA level two, and by age 25 almost half are receiving a benefit rather than working. Shinoda told Hosking the contributing factors are long-standing. She says half of schools don't refer to attendance services because they're often not effective as they're overwhelmed, with some having 500 students to one worker. There are calls for less screen time and more conversations with children before they begin school. The Education Review Office research reveals too many children are starting school without knowing how to read and write. More than two-thirds of parents report their child had language difficulties before they started school last year. Head of ERO's Education Evaluation Centre Ruth Shinoda told Mike Hosking that parents need to limit device use to boost learning. She says language is developed by talking to children, and they need to know words before learning to read and write them at school. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Eric is back to talk Masahiro Shinoda again with Jason, this time chatting about three of the master's movies centered around love: One Way Ticket to Love, Epitaph to My Love and Love, New and Old. These are early Shinodas, which means they're less experimental - but even in these early films, a lot of the genius of Shinoda shines through and makes these films well worth watching. Join us and find out why!
Now Eric and Jason come to an odd point in their look at the films of the great Masahiro Shinoda. Shinoda made one unabashedly commercial film, his look at the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics. So they had to look at that movie, but what to pair it with? They ended up deciding to look at perhaps the most critically acclaimed Olympics documentary ever made, Kon Ichikawa, 1965 Tokyo Olympiad. The films are almost in dialog with each other. Both take similar concepts and do different things with them, so what emerges from a watch of both is an intriguing compare and contrast: about these films, about the portrayal of sports on celluloid, and even about tthe way Japanese society changed in one short decade. It's a fun listen, and we'd love to hear your take on the same ideas.
New teachers across the country are not being set up to succeed, according to the Education Review Office (ERO). Two thirds of principals are reporting new teachers coming into the role are unprepared, and a third of new primary teachers claim they are unprepared to teach science. The ERO is calling for more to be done. Ruth Shinoda, Head of ERO's Education Evaluation Centre, tells Mike Hosking the combination of teachers themselves saying they don't feel prepared, and their principals reiterating this is concerning. Eric and Jason are back talking about the films of Masahiro Shinoda, this time discussing three films with bizarre emotional triangles of a sort: Our Marriage, Gonza the Spearman and The Petrified Forest. The guys are surprised how emotionally satisfying Our Marriage is despite its brief 66-minute running length. The film captures a specific moment in Japanese history with a brilliant sort of all-encompassing eye... hopefully a listen to this pod will convince you to check out this vastly under-known film. Which is not to say that Gonza and Forest are not excellent films. As Eric and Jason explore, they both are satisying in that particular sort of massive dark way Shinoda often delivers. Each is a fascinating, deep insight into human nature and well worth a listen and a watch. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jason-sacks/message

Students are learning more about our history but less about our place in the world. An Education Review Office report finds schools have been working hard to implement the new Aotearoa Histories Curriculum. It's being taught in three quarters of all schools up to and including Year 10, but to varying degrees. Education Evaluation Centre Head Ruth Shinoda says it takes up a lot of teachers' time making their own teaching resources. She told Mike Hosking that more off-the-shelf content would help support schools to teach the full range of the curriculum. Shinoda says those resources could help teachers have more time to teach other social sciences too, like geography and economics. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The behaviour of our kids in the classroom continues to be a problem. New research from the Education Review Office shows disruptive behaviour has become worse over the past two years, despite New Zealand ranking among the worst in the OECD for the last 20. A quarter of principals are seeing students physically harm others and steal property at least every day. Education Evaluation Centre Head Ruth Shinoda told Mike Hosking that there's evidence to show prevention helps. She says there's great schools in the report who have clear expectations and consistent consequences to ensure behaviour doesn't escalate. Another hit to the already fragile view of the education system. A new report from the Education Review Office has found that less than half of year eight students are meeting expectation in maths. It's also found that nearly a quarter of new primary school teachers feel unqualified to teach the subject. Ruth Shinoda, Head of the Education Evaluation Centre, told Mike Hosking that the country's maths level has been on the decline for the last twenty years. She said that the report captures and shares the good teaching practices as well as the bad, so they can be implemented by more educators. Eric and Jason are back to continue their looks at the brilliant films of Masahiro Shinoda. This time they look at two films which present intriguing, contrasting views of childhood in wartime and post-War Japan, MacArthur's Children and Takeshi: Childhood Days. The films are a great pair for each other and for any study of Japanese post-War cinema, and we think the discussion of them makes for a great listen! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jason-sacks/message
Formed back in 1996 in California as rap-rock band XERO, Linkin Park went through massive changes to become the band we know today. Original singer Mark Wakefield left the band in 1999 when record labels began noticing the group - but felt he wasn't a strong enough vocalist to truly push the band forward. Mark was soon replaced with Chester Bennington, a singer from Arizona who had just left his band Grey Daze. The Chemistry between Xero and Chester was much better; the Hybrid of sounds between rapper and vocalist Mike Shinoda's Rap influences and Chester's hard rock background inspired the band to change their name to Hybrid Theory. Hybrid Theory *the band* self-released Hybrid Theory *the EP* in 1999, and although initially still struggling to court a major label to sign with- they were signed to Warner Brothers records on the third time of trying. Warner Brothers was still quite skeptical of Hybrid Theory - they asked the band to change their name so that people wouldn't confuse them with a Welsh band called ‘Hybrid' and even suggested they demote or fire Mike Shinoda and refocus their efforts to creating a more traditional rock record with Chester as the sole frontman. The band took the label's first piece of advice - They officially re-christened themselves as Linkin Park, but they refused the second directive - the ‘Hybrid' in Hybrid theory was important to Bennington and Shinoda and they carried on with both vocalists playing a crucial part in the band. Not only was the album a success, it was the MOST successful album of 2001, and included hit after hit after hit, with singles Crawling, One Step Closer, and In the End topping charts worldwide. Pressure was now incredibly high for Linkin Park - they went from being a band that very few people believed into the biggest band in the world. They knew that in order to avoid the 'second album slump', they'd need to make a really great record. Recorded all throughout 2002, and released in March 2003, Linkin Park's second effort entitled Meteora gave Linkin Park fans what they wanted and then some. This is the story of the third and most recognizable single, with words from MIke Shinoda and Joseph Hahn from the time.

As Eric and Jason are learning, Masahiro Shinoda is a director who delivered many sui generis works. And though his second movie, the rebel-without-a-clue Youth in Fury is pretty straightforward (though complex, for reasons we get into), Shinoda's third movie, Killers on Parade is an odd surrealistic semi-masterpiece, semi-WTF exploration of... what in particular, we're just not sure. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jason-sacks/message

Eric and Jason love their Shinoda films, so they jump back into the filmography of the great, little-appreicated Japanese master with a look at A Flame at the Pier and The Ballad of Orin. At first glance these two films - one a noir about Japanese labor unions and the other about a traveling blind performer - have little in common. But in fact, they're both of a common type and provide a great contrast with each other. The Education Review Office is seriously concerned about the lasting impact Covid-19 disruptions are having on education. Its research has found the pandemic has had a lingering and significant impact - particularly on students' progress. Nearly half of principals say learning is worse than expected at this time of year and only one in five think their school has recovered from the disruption. Education Evaluation Centre head Ruth Shinoda told Mike Hosking getting attendance back up is important - then targeting the learners who have fallen the furthest behind. She says they're concerned those in poorer communities have been most impacted. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Eric joins Jason to continue their look at the films of Masahiro Shinoda, this time with a different approach. We look at Shinoda's version of the classic Japanese novel Silence and compare his version with the Martin Scorcese version. This provides one of the richest, most thoughtful conversations we've ever done on Movienauts - one of those chats where we seem to get to deeper and more thoughtful levels of insight which allow us to appreciate these films even more. Concern education is becoming less of a priority, as New Zealand's school attendance falls behind other parts of the world. A report by the Education Review Office's evaluation centre has found only 58 per cent of students go to school regularly. It's further found four in 10 parents are comfortable with their child missing more than a week of school a term. ERO's Ruth Shinoda told Mike Hosking it's a key problem, as parents don't appear to be prioritising school enough. She says it's a lot of lost learning, and primary school in particular sets the foundation for later education. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Linkin Park is an American rock band from Agoura Hills, California. The band's current lineup comprises vocalist/rhythm guitarist/keyboardist Mike Shinoda, lead guitarist Brad Delson, bassist Dave Farrell, DJ/turntablist Joe Hahn and drummer Rob Bourdon, all of whom are founding members. Vocalists Mark Wakefield and Chester Bennington are former members of the band. Categorized as alternative rock, Linkin Park's earlier music spanned a fusion of heavy metal and hip hop, while their later music features more electronica and pop elements.Formed in 1996, Linkin Park rose to international fame with their debut studio album, Hybrid Theory (2000), which became certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Released during the peak of the nu metal scene, the album's singles' heavy airplay on MTV led the singles "One Step Closer", "Crawling" and "In the End" all to chart highly on the Mainstream Rock chart; the latter crossed over to the pop chart. Their second album, Meteora (2003), continued the band's success. The band explored experimental sounds on their third album, Minutes to Midnight (2007). By the end of the decade, Linkin Park was among the most successful and popular rock acts. The band continued to explore a wider variation of musical types on their fourth album, A Thousand Suns (2010), layering their music with more electronic sounds. The band's fifth album, Living Things (2012), combined musical elements from all of their previous records. Their sixth album, The Hunting Party (2014), returned to a heavier rock sound, and their seventh album, One More Light (2017), was their first pop-oriented record. Linkin Park went on a hiatus when longtime lead vocalist Bennington died by suicide in July 2017. In April 2022, Shinoda revealed the band was neither working on new music nor planning on touring for the foreseeable future.Linkin Park is among the best-selling bands of the 21st century and the world's best-selling music artists, having sold over 100 million records worldwide. They have won two Grammy Awards, six American Music Awards, two Billboard Music Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, 10 MTV Europe Music Awards and three World Music Awards. In 2003, MTV2 named Linkin Park the sixth-greatest band of the music video era and the third-best of the new millennium. Billboard ranked Linkin Park No. 19 on the Best Artists of the Decade list. In 2012, the band was voted as the greatest artist of the 2000s in a Bracket Madness poll on VH1. In 2014, the band was declared as "The Biggest Rock Band in the World Right Now" by Kerrang!.

Greetings and welcome back to Awakening Aphrodite! I am beyond excited to share this week's guest with you and our powerful discussion on goddess archetypes, self-knowledge, mythology's relevance in the modern world and so much more. My amazing guest, Dr. Jean Shinoda Bolen, is a Jungian analyst, an M.D., a clinical professor of psychiatry, an activist, a diplomat of the American Board of Psychology and Neurology, an NGO permanent representative to the United Nations' Commission on the status of women, and, among other wonderful things, a prolific author. You may recognize her for her most famous book, Goddesses In Everywoman, a world-famous classic on women's psychology that uses seven goddess archetypes as a way of describing personalities, behaviors and the true self. I have all of her books and I am just so thrilled to have this wise and accomplished being on my show. You can look forward to a wide range of topics in this special episode! Our conversation begins with the recent Chinese New Year of the Water Tiger and the optimism it symbolizes as we simultaneously transition from the patriarchal Piscean Age into the egalitarian Age of Aquarius. We dive into the history of humanity and the origin of the goddess and Dr. Jean Shinoda Bolen illuminates the unique artistic aspects of human societies and civilizations. Together, we debunk myths about mythology and relate ancient Greek tales of gods and goddesses to the psyches of people like you and I in the modern day. In honor of the Aphrodite archetype in me (and for the title of my show!) I ask Dr. Jean Shinoda Bolen some deeper questions about the this alchemical goddess of love and how we can invite more Aphrodite energy into our lives. She illuminates the truth that the sacred feminine archetype is in all things: from the awe humanity experienced upon seeing the Earth from outer space for the first time to the liminal gray areas we each must navigate when making a major life decision or transition in life. We conclude with tips on balancing masculine and feminine energies to live our purpose in harmony. Enjoy!
