In this episode of the Crack House Chronicles Donnie and Dale speak with two members of Crime Stoppers of Cleveland County NC, Jeff Yates and Sgt. Brad Benson.  Cleveland County Crimestoppers is a non-profit organization that helps law enforcement obtain needed information for the investigation of crime.  Crimestoppers is an independent board that works with law enforcement in gathering information and giving rewards for the information provided.  The system for gathering this information keeps the caller completely anonymous and unknown to both the board and law enforcement.  Cleveland County Crimestoppers provides information to all Cleveland County law enforcement agencies.  Sergeant Brad Benson at the Shelby Police Department is responsible for gathering and distributing all tip information to the appropriate agencies and to provide information to the local board as the law enforcement coordinator for the board.  The board meets monthly to discuss business and make recommendations or approve tips for the previous month.  Crimestoppers play an important role in gathering needed information to extend cases for further investigation.  All law enforcement agencies within Cleveland County are fortunate to have a local board that is willing to make an effort to reduce crime in our area.   By scanning the QR Code below, a person is taken to the anonymous tip information page that will allow information, photos, and videos about a case to be uploaded to the police for their investigation. If the information helps solve a crime, the tipster may collect reward money paid by Crime Stoppers - all anonymously!  We pay up to $1000 for such information dependent on the severity of the crime. A person may also call the anonymous Tip Line 704-481-8477 to provide information.  As a non-profit organization, Crime Stoppers is reliant entirely on donations to fund reward money to tipsters who provide information that leads to an arrest.  If you would like to donate, click here. In the winter of 1979, several residents around Carpenter's Knob in Cleveland County, North Carolina, reported a series of unusual encounters with an unknown, apelike animal. Among the early sightings were those reported by Minnie Cook, an 88-year-old resident who claimed that she observed the animal after she emerged from her home to learn what kind of animal had been disturbing her dogs.  Over the next several weeks, "Knobby fever" would strike this rural portion of Western North Carolina, with many other residents reporting sightings of a large, roughly six-foot-tall apelike creature that both walked on its hind legs and on all-fours. In this episode of Sasquatch Tracks, following a recent news story involving the escape of several primates from a South Carolina laboratory, we take a deep dive into the story of Knobby, and examine the possibilities behind this enduring local legend of a southeastern "Bigfoot" creature.   Stories and other links discussed in this episode:  Knobby: The Bigfoot of Western North Carolina Follow Sasquatch Tracks on Twitter. 2022 has been a year of firsts at Southern Songs and Stories. Beginning with our first guest host, WNCW's Corrie Askew took stock of her favorite episodes of this series in the previous year. We went even further back in time to revisit Green Acres Music Hall with an episode summing up the first three podcasts on the beloved music venue, and focusing on previously unheard conversations with Green Acres alumni Bela Fleck, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, John Cowan and Acoustic Syndicate. Speaking of Bela, we profiled him on his own episode which was based on a conversation we had at the IBMAs, one of many with artists there who will be featured in coming episodes. There was even an episode without a guest, when I asked the question “Why is live music so good?”, which was also made into an NFT. In addition, we collaborated with author and The String podcast host Craig Havighurst on an episode based on our conversation at the inaugural Earl Scruggs Music Festival, titled Southern Strings and Stories. And now, another first, a collaborative episode with a Christmas theme. Plus ukuleles. And Bigfoot. Cleveland County, NC is home to ukulele band The Dancing Fleas, and is also reported to be the stomping grounds of Knobby the Bigfoot (while it is definitely home of the Yeti, the mascot of Cleveland Community College) . Collaborating with band leader Jason Lineberger on the concept, script and production of this episode, we dreamed up an old time radio theater setting with his sprawling party band at the center of this tale. Amidst the backdrop of the grand Southern tradition of the Christmas Casserole Cook Off, the Fleas seek to recapture the spirit of the holiday season in a quest which finds them taking on a rival Poison tribute band, disdain for all things New Jersey, even Knobby himself. The Dancing Fleas performing at the White Horse Black Mountain Songs heard in this episode:“The Fleas Are Here!” by the Dancing Fleas“The Funky Flea” by the Dancing FleasThanks for visiting! Would you share this episode with someone too? It takes just a click to follow us on your podcast platform of choice, and then it will only take a minute to give it a good rating, and on platforms with the option, a review. Great ratings and reviews will make Southern Songs and Stories and the artists it profiles more likely to be found by more people just like you.Southern Songs and Stories is a part of the podcast lineup of Osiris Media, with all of the Osiris shows available here. You can also hear new episodes of this podcast on Bluegrass Planet Radio here. Thanks to Corrie Askew for producing the radio adaptations of this series on public radio WNCW, and to Joshua Meng, who wrote and performed our theme songs. What are you doing in September?   We are discussing some of the fun events happening throughout Oklahoma during the month of September.  If you want to find something new to do this month, check out the show.   Rock the Route, Yukon's popular FREE concert event, returns September 1, 2022! Celebrate the Mother Road with great quality music, food trucks, and plenty of fun activities for all ages in downtown Yukon from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm.   Yukon known as the hometown of country superstar Garth Brooks, Yukon sprang into being in 1891 as a farming community. Visitors flock to Yukon to experience one of Oklahoma's largest ethnic festivals each year — the Oklahoma Czech Festival goes all-out with music, a parade, costumed dances, crafts and plenty of Czech delicacies.   Make your way to the Pottawatomie County Free Fair in Shawnee for an array of activities perfect for children and the whole family. Come to this annual fair for arts and crafts, commercial vendor and educational booths, delicious fair food, midway games and evening carnival rides.   Shawnee is located at the geographical center of Interstate 40, just 30 minutes east of OKC. A unique multicultural gem, in Shawnee the old-west rural and modern urban mingle happily. Home to four Native American tribes with a rich pre-statehood history, our city of just over 30,000 boasts of world-class museums, a bustling historic downtown district, recreational lakes, and more.   Prepare for three days of Okie fun during PiG Fest at Rainbow Valley Ranch in Wellston this September. This multi-day festival will feature performances by prominent Oklahoma artists like singer-songwriter Samantha Crain, Turnpike Troubadour's own Kyle Nix, heavy metal band Locust Grove and rockers Rainbows Are Free.   Wellston, Oklahoma, is a small town located just north of Route 66 in western Lincoln County. The town started in about 1880 when a man named Christian T. Wells established a trading post in the northern part of the Kickapoo Reservation. Several years later, Wells established a post office on September 19, 1884, and served as the first postmaster.   ScotFest is Oklahoma's flagship celebration of Celtic history and heritage. Held in Broken Arrow's Chisholm Trail Park, this weekend-long festival has something for the entire family including food, crafts and excellent live music.   Broken Arrow offers both small-town charm and big-city amenities. Some of Oklahoma's most scenic natural areas surround the community, making it a top spot for outdoor activities, while its cultural attractions draw people seeking arts and entertainment, especially in downtown's Rose District.   The Standing Bear Powwow is hosted by the six north-central tribes of Oklahoma, the powwow features inter-tribal dancing, tiny tot contests, and the crowning of the Standing Bear Princess. There will also be a variety of arts and craft vendors, along with food vendors to satisfy your hunger during all of the festivities.   Ponca City settlers claimed townsite certificates during the Cherokee Outlet Opening, and oil made it into the thriving cultural center it is today. Honor the brave women who settled Oklahoma at the Pioneer Woman Museum & Statue. Tour the Italian "Palace on the Prairie," the Marland Mansion & Estate, built by oil baron and Governor E.W. Marland.   The Canadian River Wine Festival invites all ages out to Lexington for a fun day at the winery. All ages are invited to participate in the annual Grape Stomp Festival festivities.   Lexington Oklahoma flourished between 1907 and 1911 and became the trade center of south Cleveland County. Especially, when in 1911, a new steel bridge was built across the river connecting Lexington and Purcell. In 1890, the population was recorded at 223 people. Now, over 2,200 people call Lexington, OK their home.   #TravelOK #onlyinokshow #Oklahoma #MadeinOklahoma #oklaproud #podcast #okherewego #traveloklahoma #events  #September #festival #fair #Yukon #Shawnee #BBQ #Wellston #heritage #brokenArrow #parade #concert #music #food #Powwow #visitchoctawcountry #poncacity #wine #lexington

The image of bluegrass is mountain music played and heard at high altitudes and towns like Deep Gap and remote mountain hollers across the Appalachians. But the earliest form of the music originated at lower elevations, in textile towns across the North Carolina Piedmont. As far back as the 1920s, old-time string bands like Charlie Poole's North Carolina Ramblers were playing an early form of the music in textile towns, like Gastonia, Spray, and Shelby - in Cleveland County west of Charlotte. In this second episode of Carolina Calling, we visit the small town of Shelby: a seemingly quiet place, like most small Southern towns one might pass by in their travels. Until you see the signs for the likes of the Don Gibson Theatre and the Earl Scruggs Center, you wouldn't guess that it was the town that raised two of the most influential musicians and songwriters in bluegrass and country music: Earl Scruggs, one of the most important musicians in the birth of bluegrass, whose banjo playing was so innovative that it still bears his name, “Scruggs style,” and Don Gibson, one of the greatest songwriters in the pop & country pantheon, who wrote “I Can't Stop Loving You,” “Sweet Dreams,” and other songs you know by heart. For both Don Gibson and Earl Scruggs, Shelby is where it all began.Subscribe to Carolina Calling to follow along as we journey across the Old North State, visiting towns like Greensboro, Durham, Wilmington, Asheville, and more.Brought to you by The Bluegrass Situation and Come Hear NCMusic featured in this episode:Charlie Poole & The North Carolina Ramblers - "Take a Drink On Me"Flatt & Scruggs - "Ground Speed"Don Gibson - "I Can't Stop Loving You"Andrew Marlin - "Erie Fiddler" (Carolina Calling Theme)Hedy West - "Cotton Mill Girl"Blind Boy Fuller - "Rag Mama, Rag"Don Gibson - "Sea Of Heartbreak"Patsy Cline - "Sweet Dreams "Ray Charles - "I Can't Stop Loving You"Ronnie Milsap - "(I'd Be) A Legend In My Time"Elvis Presley - "Crying In The Chapel"Hank Snow - "Oh Lonesome Me"Don Gibson - "Sweet Dreams"Don Gibson - "Oh Lonesome Me"Chet Atkins - "Oh Lonesome Me"Johnny Cash - "Oh, Lonesome Me"The Everly Brothers - "Oh Lonesome Me"Neil Young - "Oh Lonesome Me"Flatt & Scruggs - "Foggy Mountain Breakdown"Bill Preston - "Holy, Holy, Holy"Flat & Scruggs - "We'll Meet Again Sweetheart"Snuffy Jenkins - "Careless Love"Bill Monroe - "Uncle Pen"Bill Monroe - "It's Mighty Dark to Travel"The Earl Scruggs Revue - "I Shall Be Released"The Band - "I Shall Be Released"Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - "Will The Circle Be Unbroken"The Country Gentlemen - "Fox on the Run"Sonny Terry - "Whoopin' The Blues"Sonny Terry & Brownie McGee - "Born With The Blues (Live)"Nina Simone - "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free"Cover image courtesy of the Don Gibson TheatreAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
