Presidential politics and energy expert Jay Hakes, a former University of New Orleans Political Science professor, has written a compelling new book about contemporary presidents and their response to environmental issues. He helped organize Jimmy Carter's Louisiana campaign in 1976 and he would go on to manage the Carter Presidential Library in Atlanta for 13 years. As an energy expert, he spent time shaping energy policy for the state of Florida and, under Carter, headed the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Hakes joins Louisiana Life Executive Editor Errol Laborde and podcast producer Kelly Massicot to discuss his latest book, “The Presidents and the Planet: Climate Change Science and Politics from Eisenhower to Bush,” published by LSU Press. The wide ranging discussion also includes shaping public opinion (such as the awareness of the dangers from second hand cigarette smoke) and the future of electric vehicles. It is high powered conversation.
Send me a messageIn this episode of the Climate Confident podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Jay Hakes, a renowned expert in U.S. energy and environmental policy. Long ago in a faraway place there lived two mothers. One, a humble peasant woman who struggled daily to provide for her children. And the other, a mother spider who also worked hard to care for her family. And although it would appear they were as different as night and day, these two mothers had more in common than would first seem. As the only holiday gift she can give her children, one cold Christmas Eve the peasant woman goes to the forest to get a tree, never noticing that someone has made a home among its branches. During the night, the mother spider spins webs decorating the tree, resulting in a Christmas that neither mother will ever forget. Based on an old Ukrainian story, Trinka Hakes Noble crafts an original heartwarming tale of the grace that can be found in the true spirit of Christmas. This books is available on Amazon. Marketing agencies are a dime a dozen, but Tyler Hakes wanted to build Optimist differently. Tyler found himself often frustrated that companies and agencies often play a game of telephone, never actually speaking with the people who were creating content on their behalf. That's why Optimist functions as a collective of high-level freelancers of varying specialties, who come together to take content strategy for Optimist's clients from end-to-end. In this episode, Tyler shared the lessons he's learned over the past 5 years of running Optimist, and why he always thinks of content in terms of ROI-driving assets.
