As the Season Turns

Wend your way with us through an April day - through the blossoming orchard, to Japan for our monthly tree ritual, under the oak trees with Zoe, our resident forager, and up into the dusky air with emerging bats. Soundtracked by Sam Lee's song for April, 'The Cuckoo'. 'As the Season Turns' is a podcast created by Ffern in collaboration with the nature writer and author of the Seasonal Almanac, Lia Leendertz. Lia is joined by novelist Zoe Gilbert and folk musician Sam Lee. Sam's traditional song was arranged by himself (vocals) with James Keay (piano) and Niko O'Brien (percussion). The track was recorded and mixed by Niko. This podcast is produced by Geoff Bird and Catriona Bolt. Each episode, released on the first of the month, is a guide to what to look out for in the month ahead - from the sky above to the land below. Ffern is an organic fragrance maker based in Somerset. Rerun: Kylie Minogue and Jason Donavan's characters in hit soap opera ‘Neighbours' were wed in 1988, causing a shopping mall riot in Australia, and attracting an astonishing 20 million viewers to the UK transmission on 8th November.  Soundtracked entirely by Angry Anderson's surging power ballad ‘Suddenly', the ceremony quickly became an iconic moment in 80s telly - but very nearly hadn't happened at all, because the series was canned by its original network, and Scott was supposed to be played by another actor. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain why, despite the show's huge success, the production standards were so low; examine the extent to which the tourist dollar for Scott and Charlene fans has held up over the decades; and consider the stylistic legacy of the makeup and dresses created for the wedding by ‘Isis of Melbourne'...  Further Reading: • ‘Neighbours' - episode 523 in full (Grundy, 1988): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IR34ISysYQc • ‘Bouncer's dream and gorillagrams: an oral history of Neighbours – the world's silliest, sunniest show' (The Guardian, 2020): https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2020/mar/31/bouncers-dream-and-gorillagrams-an-oral-history-of-neighbours-the-worlds-silliest-sunniest-show • ‘Especially For You - The Scott And Charlene Love Story' (Retroheadz, 2016): https://www.retroheadz.com/classic-tv/especially-for-you-the-scott-and-charlene-love-story/ ‘Why am I hearing a rerun?' This episode Jason takes the story right back to the roots, as we look at the turbulent birth of the spaces that allowed Disco to come into being. Soundtracked by the songs from the Stonewall juke box & classic Soul & Funk from the 50s & 60s, the story takes us through the trials & tribulations of the LGBTQ+ community, in New-York & beyond. From police harassment, to government oppression & exploitation from the mafia. The story of The Stonewall uprising is a seminal moment in the history of Gay Liberation & essential in understanding the context of how the Discotheques & DJs that followed were able to make such a lasting impact on popular culture. Today I'm joined by author and musician Jamie Kocur, who tells us her personal deconstruction story, told in her book ' My CMM Soundtracked Life'. She shares how Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) seemed, for her, a perfect place to nestle into, but eventually became a place to hide.Jamie dreamed of becoming a Christian singer-songwriter and this dream took her down some unexpected paths, including a literal journey through four continents where she came face-to-face with some of CCM’s biggest artists and Hollywood stars. She tells of how the more she experienced the world, the more the evangelical Christian bubble she had lived in was exposed. She tells us how this led to her faith deconstruction and how this deconstruction impacted her, her life, faith and vocation - and how when she began to explore doubt and mystery, she found a new way to experience God, and a new song to sing.

This episode is a taste of what's to come - from how our fiercely independent newsroom thrived under a corrupt Queensland government through the 1980s, to the legendary 4ZZZ gigs in the halls, pubs and rugby clubs of Brisbane to how oppressed communities found a platform on the station. Soundtracked by Brisbane artists you would have heard first on the station over the decades (check out The Parameters and Ironing Music if you like what you hear in this trailer episode). Soundtracked by a combined collection of the usual lost pop, misplaced foreign funk and experimental mayhem that has come to shape the ten year old label Andy Votel and Doug Shipton have joined forces with award-winning wireless veteran and local hardman Pete Mitchell (The Pete & Geoff Show) who will celebrate, vindicate and mediate between a host of likeminded guests, brave and foolish enough to grace the Keepers Cottage studio with their presence. With regular visitations from the likes of Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab), Graham Massey (Biting Tongues/808 State) and Jane Weaver (The Silver Globe) and in house japes and judgments from FK office props Lee Janda and James Pianta amongst others the label and DJ collective fly their "Making Global Local" flag at full mast spiking the world music map with thematic features and underdeveloped magazine articles to break up the Brazilian fuzz guitar solos and Russian synth workouts. Ten years in the oven with a fifty-year-old palette of vibrant outer-national noise at our disposal, welcome to the Finders Keepers Radio Show.

In Part 2 of this special edition of Retrosonic Podcast we are very pleased to welcome back Harley Feinstein, the original drummer with Sparks. Harley appeared on the band's first two Bearsville Records albums "Halfnelson/Sparks" and "A Woofer In Tweeter's Clothing", and their very first visit to the UK back in the early Seventies. In the previous Episode Harley told us about how he first met Ron and Russell Mael and joined the band. Now in Part 2, Harley talks about the band's first experiences in a studio with Todd Rundgren and James Lowe of The Electric Prunes and how a notorious bunch of Groupies contributed to them getting signed to Bob Dylan's manager's record label. This introduces the band to the nefarious world of the music business with it's aggressive managers and pressure to "make it". There's the enforced name change from Halfnelson to Sparks and we discover some of the hilarious, and slightly worrying, alternate names that the band might have been lumbered with. We follow the band to England and their first TV appearance on Old Grey Whistle Test and sold-out gig at the Marquee and residency at The Pheasantry and the taste of what can be achieved on record company expenses. We then find out how an ill-fated trip to Zermatt in Switzerland became the final nail in the coffin for the band at that time. Soundtracked by early Sparks songs including material from their original demo album, this is a fascinating tale of Sparks' formative years.
