On this day in Tudor history, 5th June 1516, Maria de Salinas married Lord Willoughby of Eresby. But this Spanish noblewoman would be remembered not for her marriage, but for her fierce loyalty to Queen Catherine of Aragon. Maria's story is one of deep friendship, political influence, and unwavering devotion. She followed Catherine from Spain to England, stood by her through triumph and tragedy, and, in the end, defied royal orders to be with her dying friend. In 1536, when Catherine was banished and gravely ill at Kimbolton Castle, Maria risked everything. She rode through a bitter winter storm, suffered a riding accident, and still pushed on—claiming to have lost her permission papers, just to reach Catherine's side. She arrived just in time. The queen died the next day. Join me as I explore the extraordinary life and character of Maria de Salinas—friend, mother, fighter, and one of the most loyal women in Tudor history. #MariaDeSalinas #CatherineOfAragon #TudorHistory #OnThisDay #WomenInHistory #TudorCourt #TudorQueens #RealFriendship #TudorEngland #SpanishNoblewoman #KimboltonCastle #LoyaltyAndLove #HistoricalWomen #TudorDrama #AnneBoleynFiles

Two years ago Lindsey was running a successful salon in Oregon with 25 stylists. Living her dream. Building her business. Then she made one decision that changed everything. She lost her entire business. Everything she'd built for 15 years. Gone. But here's what's incredible about this story. She didn't break. She didn't back down. Join us for an unflinchingly honest conversation with Peter Rahal, founder of RXBAR (sold to Kellogg's for $600M) and David Protein. Once labeled "disabled" by the school system, Peter reveals how his dyslexia fueled his contrarian mindset, relentless hustle, and ability to spot market gaps others missed. Learn how childhood humiliation became his rocket fuel, why he refuses to celebrate wins, and how his "anti-authority" approach built two category-defining brands. This episode is for entrepreneurs, neurodivergent thinkers, and anyone who's been told they don't fit the mold. Key Takeaways and Topics: Peter Rahal's background in the food industry and how this influenced his entrepreneurial journey. The idea for RX Bar emerged from a gap in the market for paleo-friendly protein bars. Early partnerships can significantly impact the success of a startup. Scaling production requires understanding supply chains and manufacturing processes. Product market fit is crucial for the success of any consumer product. Rebranding helped RX Bar reach a broader audience and clarify the product's value proposition. Rahal's childhood experiences shaped his resilience and contrarian nature. The importance of teamwork and aligned values in partnerships cannot be overstated. His success in business came from organic growth and word-of-mouth marketing. Be very, very efficient with your time. Seek criticism, seek feedback. The positive feedback loop of being doing something you're good at is motivating. Your 20s are the time to go all in and take risks. The Failure Factor Podcast was brought to you by Off The Field Coaching. Her mother's impressive beauty was written about by authors Edith Wharton and Henry James. Her father, Henry White, was one of the most respected diplomats of that era, with a career extending through WW1. Muriel married a Prussian count just before World War I and for a while had an idyllic life and became the mother of three children. The marriage ultimately failed and as Germany was overshadowed by the Nazis, Muriel was quite vocal on her opposition to them. She was allowed to stay in the family castle and sent her children away to America. While deprived of financial support and with her passport confiscated, she risked her own life in various acts of defiance, including helping to smuggle out a Jewish family. What can we learn about Abraham's faith? We know that he believed God against incredible odds – well, actually there was NO way in the natural for Abram and Sara to have children. That is because not only was Sara barren, but later in life they still had had no children together, and now they were getting too old, well beyond the natural age for having children. And yet Abram believed God! Abram's name was changed by God to reflect this. No longer was he to be known as ‘exalted father', but to be known as ‘father of a multitude of nations', and yet with no children. However, Abraham did not DENY his circumstances and make all sorts of “Faith Confessions”, but rather his faith DEFIED the circumstances. And Abraham, experiencing miracles and having their child of promise, Isaac, born, sets the example of what God can do in us. But it is God who gives life and recreates us as New Creations and begins to work wonders in our lives! To watch the video from the church service today, just click on this link! On 19th February 1567, while imprisoned in the Tower of London, Lady Margaret Douglas received devastating news—her son, Lord Darnley, had been brutally murdered at Kirk o' Field. But this was more than just the loss of a son—it shattered her dynastic hopes, leaving her a grieving mother caught in the deadly game of Tudor and Stuart politics.     - Granddaughter of Henry VII, Margaret was born into royalty but repeatedly fell foul of the crown—not through open ambition, but by defying royal authority and making decisions without permission.   - She supported her son's marriage to Mary, Queen of Scots, without Elizabeth I's blessing—only for him to be murdered in mysterious circumstances less than two years later.   - Her relentless pursuit of justice helped turn English and Scottish opinion against Mary, Queen of Scots.   - But Margaret's independent choices landed her in the Tower multiple times, including for arranging another unauthorised marriage—this time for her surviving son, Charles.     Despite losing her husband, both sons, and her own freedom, Margaret's bloodline ultimately prevailed. Her grandson, James VI of Scotland, became James I of England in 1603, uniting the crowns and shaping the monarchy as we know it today.     Margaret Douglas never ruled, but her defiance left a lasting mark on history. How France's budget cuts will impact development work abroad and civil society at home. An inconclusive medical marijuana experiment leaves patients in limbo. And how Jewish comedian Pierre Dac used humour in the Resistance. The government's budget for 2025, if passed, will see public spending slashed by €32 billion. While most ministries are impacted, funding for public development assistance (PDA) is facing cuts of more than €2 billion – 35 percent of its budget. Coordination Sud, an umbrella group for 180 French non-profit organisations working internationally, say they're being disproportionately hit at a time when international solidarity efforts are needed more than ever. Elodie Barralon, the group's advocacy officer, talks about the impact of such cuts and concerns that civil society is being rolled back in France. (Listen @0')As a three-year experiment with medical marijuana comes to an end, instead of generalising its use, as intended, authorisation has been stalled. Nadine Attal, head of the pain centre at the Ambroise-Paré hospital in Boulogne near Paris addresses the sticking points, which include France's current government chaos and the lack of political will to move forward. She sounds the alarm over the hundreds of patients enrolled in the experiment who have benefited from medical cannabis but whose health is now being ignored. (Listen @20'20'').French humourist Pierre Dac came to fame in the 1930s with a winning brand of absurdist humour that managed to get everyone laughing while ridiculing no one. When WWII broke out he turned his talents to fighting anti-semitism, Hitler, and the collaborationist Vichy regime, joining Free France's Radio Londres in 1943. He also founded a political party that defended the place of laughter and flabbiness in politics.  Fifty years after his death, on 9 February 1975, he remains one of France's most popular, and humanist of humourists. What if you could turn your challenges into your biggest strengths? Today, I'm sitting down with Drew Davis, a young entrepreneur who took a high school project and transformed it into an extraordinary business success. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy and told his idea for Crippling Hot Sauce was “unrealistic,” Drew didn't just overcome obstacles—he obliterated them. At 19, he's sold over 250,000 bottles, built a thriving business from scratch, and is donating part of his profits to cerebral palsy research. This isn't just about business; it's about resilience, grit, and the power of believing in yourself when no one else does. Drew shares the fascinating story of how he started with nothing but $3,000 of birthday money and an idea. Despite having no business experience and being told by his teacher that the concept wouldn't work, Drew's determination to prove them wrong fueled his success. We talk about the early days—mixing sauces in his family's kitchen, selling out his first batch in 30 minutes, and how a local newspaper story ignited the growth of Crippling Hot Sauce. In this conversation, we unpack the strategies Drew used to scale his company, from branding to leveraging organic and paid social media. His insight into building a brand with heart—donating 5% of profits to cerebral palsy research—shows how a powerful mission can elevate a business. Drew is proof that no matter your age or your challenges, you can achieve greatness when you're willing to put in the work and believe in your vision. Drew's humility and humor shine throughout the episode. He talks about how his parents always treated him like anyone else and how this mindset helped shape his confidence. He also explains how he uses humor as a tool to handle adversity and stay grounded. His journey is a masterclass in not letting circumstances define you but using them as fuel to rise above and inspire others. Key Takeaways: How Drew turned a school project into a quarter-million-dollar business. The importance of branding and storytelling in creating a memorable product. Why giving back can be a strategic move for building a brand. How to use failure as a stepping stone for growth. The value of resilience and believing in your vision, no matter the odds. This episode is more than just a success story—it's a blueprint for overcoming adversity and building something meaningful. Drew Davis is a living example that nothing can stop you when you decide to push past your limitations. Prepare to walk away motivated and ready to chase your dreams with everything you've got.
