He uses his five-pillar approach to help players shoot lower scores and play more consistently... without swing changes. In today's episode, you'll learn: The keye elements to focus on changing to upgrade your identity The power of consistency - and how to cultivate it The importance of slowing down to regain focus after mistakes How less is more in practice and preparation for tournaments The role of mindset in developing consistency and breaking 80 Actionable strategies for building effective post-round reflections Why mental and physical self-care off the course impacts on-course performance Get your pencils ready and start listening. Key Takeaways: The mental game's primary goal is to reduce stress, as stress disrupts motor patterns and prevents you from swinging your best on the course. A growth mindset is critical for improving in golf; believing that improvement is possible fuels the effort needed to achieve your goals. Effective practice involves intention and structure—prioritizing deliberate, focused sessions over marathon practice that leads to burnout. Consistency in effort, even with small, incremental steps, is the foundation for long-term progress in golf and life. Managing your expectations with data-driven insights (e.g., realistic fairway hit percentages) helps avoid frustration and enhances performance. Pre- and post-shot routines, along with slowing down after mistakes, are essential tools for bouncing back from blow-up holes and staying composed. The golfer you are on the course is deeply connected to the human being you are off it—prioritizing physical, mental, and emotional well-being will elevate your performance. Key Quotes: "The whole goal of the mental game is stress is coming—it's going to happen. No matter how good you get, you're going to hit bad shots. The key is figuring out how to calm down and get back to your process as fast as you can." "You have to have a growth mindset—if you don't think you can improve, you won't. But if you believe someone else did it, then you can too." "Do different to get different. If you keep practicing the same way, going through the same motions, and expecting better results, you'll stay stuck. Challenge yourself to do what others aren't willing to do." "Your swing is already there. It's not going to change the day before a tournament. Sometimes the best preparation is resting, eating well, and showing up with a clear and focused mind." "Consistency beats everything. Even if it's a mediocre practice or an okay workout, you're still showing up. Over time, that builds belief and creates real progress." "Having the right expectations is everything. If you think you'll hit every fairway or make every putt, you're setting yourself up for frustration. Focus on playing your best with what you have that day." "You can't separate the golfer from the human being. How you care for yourself emotionally, physically, and mentally off the course directly impacts how you perform on the course." Subscribe to the More Pars Than Bogeys Newsletter. Join commit to 6 here! AI Takeaways Focus on the positive changes you have made in your fitness journey, even if you haven't reached your goals yet. Identify what is working for you on the days when you are adherent to your plan and find solutions for the days when you struggle. Seek support for mental stress and consider reducing workload if it is contributing to burnout. Weight loss is not just about increasing physical activity; it also requires finding a balance with nutrition and making sustainable lifestyle changes. Supersets can be an effective way to save time and increase muscle gains during workouts. Supersets can be practical for workouts, but it's important to be mindful of how exercises are programmed, especially in a commercial gym setting. Drop sets can be an effective way to push muscles to fatigue by reducing the weight on the last set. Cutting and bulking cycles are commonly used in bodybuilding to optimize muscle growth and fat loss, but they may not be suitable for everyone. Realistic intention setting involves considering factors like travel plans and making adjustments to goals and targets accordingly. Running is not inherently bad for weight loss, but it's important to maintain a calorie deficit and consider individual circumstances and preferences. The concerns raised about additives and emulsifiers in ultra-processed foods should be approached with moderation and common sense, rather than strict avoidance. Finding a middle ground and making informed choices based on individual circumstances and goals is key to maintaining a balanced approach to nutrition and exercise.

This is part two of last month's episode about the new era of horsemanship. (If you haven't already, be sure to listen to part one from last month!) In this month's episode, we'll continue our conversation about science-based, non-forceful training methods, busting old mythology, and changing narratives around the way we talk about horses. I'll leave you with the 10 principles of horse training, as stated by equine behaviorists, that give us important guidelines to follow when we're working with horses. In my new segment. Long Story Short, I'll tell you about taking my son on his very first trail ride—and the terrifying moment I had in the middle of it. And in What the Hay? Dr. Chris Mortensen discusses abnormal horse behaviors, also known as 'stereotypic behaviors.' Many of these behaviors, from cribbing, pacing, and weaving, can be linked to mental stress from confinement and dietary issues. He emphasizes the importance of understanding the causes of these behaviors, pointing out there's increased research and understanding which helps devise new strategies to alleviate these stresses. Dr. Mortensen underscores the significance of turnout time, social contact with other horses and species and diet balance. He advises horse owners to analyze their animals' diets to ensure they are nutritionally balanced and reviews the use of items such as slow feeders and enrichments as useful tools. Is your brain giving you a hard time? Is it telling you something is dangerous that really is not dangerous? If so, know that this happens to the best of us! In this episode, I look at some of my struggles as a dental practice owner of 15 years and discuss how coaching can help all of us who are female dental practice owners. We all have many elements of our work lives that can cause stress. And our brains often feed into that stress and can cause us to spiral into worrying about things that, in reality, we may not need to be stressing over. This is natural because human brains have evolved into showing us potential dangers in our lives. However, we can choose to look at frightening situations in new ways. This changing of our perspectives can lift the weight of worry in profound ways. What are you worrying about? Chances are that how you are looking at your situation could be changed! This episode will help you recognize ways to handle situations without the worry so you can enjoy your practice ownership in a more intentional way. Listen now, and put yourself on the best path to loving your practice! Highlights from this episode: Stresses associated with a slowdown in a practice How quickly our brains can switch to very negative thoughts Ways that coaching helps dental practice owners Recognizing that it is okay to worry about our practices and that worrying is natural The benefits of looking at the facts of situations we are facing to change our perspectives Resources and links mentioned: Watch Laura's podcasts on YouTube: Love Your Practice! Understanding is the key to success and contentment with horses, no matter what you do with them. If you're a backyarder who treasures the minutiae of horsekeeping, or a champion reiner, understanding the nature of all horses, as well as the unique temperament and experiences of the individual horse, makes a huge difference in how well a horse feels and performs in our care. In this episode, Helena shares some insights from her first 30 days at Hoo Too with Brody, Clarabelle, and Siouxsie. There's also an interesting discussion with horse behaviorist and author, Mary Ann Simonds, whose new book, A Horse By Nature: Managing Emotional and Mental Stress in Horses for Improved Welfare, offers insight to the everyday behaviors of domestic horses that can help us enjoy their company while ensuring that their welfare remains front and center. There's some really good stuff in this episode, so listen in! This episode is brought to you by: AMERICAN STALLS

[01:00] Authenticity Will Be Your Best Path To Find Healing on Your Health Journey When are you pretending to be someone you're not? Whenever you pretend to be someone else, you're telling yourself that you're not enough. Authenticity is one of the most significant paths to healing. You can only heal yourself by being aligned. [09:10] Value Is Placed On Your Relationship Status - It's Time To Change The Status Quo In society, your value is placed on your relationship status. People ask why you're single. They ask when you're getting engaged. When you're engaged, they ask when you will get married. If you get divorced, then people think that means you failed. Well, one of the greatest gifts we can give is recognizing the value of goodbyes. Sometimes, the most loving thing you can do is leave. After three months of engagement, Mark left his relationship. [17:00] Stress and High Conflict Relationships Are Creating Poor Health High conflict couples have higher amounts of leaky gut. There's an inflammatory process that occurs when we're dysregulated. When you avoid chaos on the outside, you internalize it. If you're anxious about something, it can lead to a sick stomach. The journey of relationships is teaching us how incredibly wise we are. [22:10] Are You Going To A Job That You Hate? Stop Doing Things You Don't Love Most heart attacks happen on Monday morning between 8 am and 9 am. Your body gives many warnings; it's normal to live through those warnings. When we perpetually do things we don't love, it sends the message that we don't believe in ourselves. If you want to find what matters to you, then find what breaks your heart. After Mark's relationship ended, he felt so connected to himself. However, he was judged by everyone for it. [27:45] Please Avoid Losing Yourself In Your Relationships When a relationship ends, you'll hear people say, “they took a part of me.” In society, we are taught that people complete us. Also, it's normal to give up everything for love. However, if you lose your relationship, you end up losing yourself. [39:40] Why You Shouldn't Feel Guilty About Expressing Boundaries When you are afraid to express a boundary, it comes from a beautiful place. If you don't want to communicate your boundaries, most likely, you are trying to protect other people from experiencing feelings. When Mark quit drinking, he feared what other people would think of him at weddings, bachelor parties, and guys trips. However, Mark had gone to his first wedding sober and had the time of his life. If you're not expressing boundaries, you are making other people's feelings more important than your own. [47:00] Allow Other People To Be Disappointed Because Boundaries Will Preserve Your Wholeness Allow other people to be disappointed. Don't try and save people from disappointment, and don't let their disappointment correlate to how you feel about yourself. Boundaries will preserve wholeness. Content warning: This episode discusses the journey of one our guests to recovery with an eating disorder. While this episode, and all episodes of Fierce Conversations with Toby, are designed to facilitate healing for all, some listeners may be troubled by the subject matter. Watch the video interview here! Transcripts available at https://tobydorr.com/podcast-schedule/ Everything happens for a reason. And five years from now, you'll look back and finally understand that very reason. It's not happening to you, it's happening for you. It will all be okay in the end. And if it's not okay now, then it's not the end." - Amanda Plasse, today's guest on Fierce Conversations with Toby Lisa Plasse and her daughter, Amanda Plasse, open up about their journey through Amanda's mental health challenges, particularly her battle with an eating disorder. Lisa describes the rollercoaster of emotions and treatments Amanda went through over 18 months, leading to a transformative experience with dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). Amanda shares her future aspirations of graduating with a psychology degree, attending grad school for social work, and ultimately establishing a comprehensive treatment center to address multiple aspects of mental health in one place. Their conversation underscores the importance of open dialogue, reducing stigma, and holistic support systems, providing valuable insights for listeners facing similar challenges. Some of our fierce topics today: [00:00] Introduction to Amanda and Her Journey [07:15] Discussion of Amanda's Eating Disorder [12:20] Recognizing Signs of Mental Stress in Young Adults [15:50] Amanda's Decision to Share Her Story on Social Media [20:22] Amanda's Social Media Post [29:10] How Society Can Reduce the Stigma Surrounding Eating Disorders [29:18] Reducing Stigma Around Eating Disorders [35:10] Amanda's Future Goals About Amanda Plasse: Amanda Plasse is going to be a junior this fall at Montclair State University studying psychology. Her ultimate goal is to eventually return back to school to receive her PhD in psychology and open up her own treatment center that treats various mental illnesses. Currently, she is a Crisis Counselor with the Crisis Text Line. She is also a Recovery Caseworker with the Red Cross, providing resources and speaking with clients who have recently experienced a natural disaster. Finally, she works at Illuminate ABA as a behavior technician working with children with autism. She has been diagnosed with multiple mental illnesses and has been to several treatment centers and hospitals herself. Similar setup as we did with episode 49 about whether is competition good or bad for you. In this episode tackle Challenges. Are they good or bad for you? So many people get introduced to dieting or working out through challenges. And even if you get great results from the challenge why do so many people not keep the results? Why Challenges are Good: 1. The more obstacle you conquer, the easier the process becomes. 2. With you each obstacle you conquer the more confidence you build. 3. The more confidence you gain the more powerful and unstoppable you become. Challenges are a powerful vehicle to impact change and results in your life. But there is an ugly side to Challenges because with great power comes great responsibility. Join us as we unpack this BIG topic. [8:30] Annie and Chris's first experience of taking on a nutrition challenge. [15:00] What should be the big takeaways from a successful challenge versus the actual results? [18:00] Habits vs. Challenges [22:58] Guidelines for a good challenge [27:20] When challenges are bad [32:48] Our upcoming Holiday Rowing Challenge Peace ✌
