After the undercurrents is a new exhibition bringing together the work of two senior painters, Australian artist Gordon Bennett and Tāmaki-based Emily Karaka, opening tonight at Artspace Aotearoa.  Gordon Bennett was a Brisbane-based artist who is widely recognised as one of Australia's most significant and critically engaged contemporary practitioners. His practice moved between these different phases – from often more abstract forms, to his conscious appropriation of Basquiat to create these cross-cultural dialogues, to the work made under the name of ‘John Citizen' as a means to question identity and politics of categorisation in Australian art – seeking to map alternative histories and question the status quo through these various forms.  His work has been paired with Tāmaki-based painter Emily Karaka whose practice draws on the personal and political through these diverse art making traditions, vibrant colours, and historical narratives that guide her. Grounded in the cultural and political landscape of Aotearoa, her work articulates emotional intensity and her unique perspective, speaking to her long-standing advocacy for kaitiakitanga and mana motuhake.  In After the undercurrents, with both artists drawing on their respective narratives of place and indigenous worldviews, the pairing allows the viewer to contemplate Artspace Aotearoa's annual question for 2026: ‘Which history?' A new home is being set up for the critically endangered kākāriki karaka - or orange-fronted parakeet - with 34 birds released on the predator-free Anchor Island in Fiordland. Department of Conservation Kākāriki Karaka Operations Manager Wayne Beggs spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.

It was an emotional scene at Karaka yesterday after the regally-bred full-sister to glamour mare Orchestral was sold for $2.4 million. After Orchestral was sold on Saturday, there was plenty of interest in her Savabeel full-sister (Lot 345), who was being offered through Haunui Farm's draft at Karaka. A massive wasp nest in South Auckland has been destroyed with exterminators taking two days to get rid of over 200,000 wasps. The "frighteningly large" nest was in a conifer tree on a farm in Karaka. Wasp expert Lloyd Carpenter spoke to Tuwhenuaroa Natanahira.

A man's been sentenced to ten months home detention for a "callous and cowardly attack "on a dog walker with a samurai sword. Darryn Clarke, 43, earlier pleaded guilty to causing grevious bodily harm with intent to injure after the incident in January this year. During his sentencing at Manukau District Court this afternoon, the court heard that Clarke was driving his Tesla on Batty Rd in Karaka, south Auckland, when the dog walker stepped into the road and gestured for him to slow down.
