Shibu also discusses stories he's written at Star Observer, including his GLOBE award nominated coverage of queer candidates at the 2020 Local Government elections in Victoria. Freelance writer and journalist Ben Riley joins Liz and Ben for a magical history tour as Susan Sto Helit teams up with a couple of monks to stop time...er...stopping in the twenty-sixth Discworld novel: 2001's Thief of Time. In Ankh-Morpork, a mystery woman tasks the odd but talented Jeremy Clockson to build a clock so accurate it can measure the tick of the Universe. In mountain monastery of Oi Dong, Lu-Tze, sweeper of the History Monks, gains a new apprentice: the unmotivated but gifted Newgate "Lobsang" Ludd. And in his domain, Death senses that the Auditors of Reality, grey entities who count every atom, are once again seeking to curb the chaos of life. He recruits his granddaughter Susan to help find the son of Time. If they can't, he'll have to get the old band back together and ride out for the end of the world - at precisely one o'clock, this Wednesday... Pratchett brings back a string of old favourites for this action-packed romp through...well, not quite through time, but it's certainly "about" time. It's the last book to properly star Susan Sto Helit, and for that matter Death; it brings back Lu-Tze, the sweeper who nudged Brutha in the right direction back in Small Gods; and Nanny Ogg is here too, in her first major appearance since the last Witches book, Carpe Jugulum. Oh, and there's a main character named Lobsang, and we know all about that name... Is this what you were hoping for in a third outing for Susan? How do you feel about the fate(s) of Lobsang and Jeremy? Where do you land on having an in-universe excuse for continuity errors in Discworld? And are the monkish wisdom jokes okay because they're based more on kung fu movie tropes than actual Tibetan culture, or is it still a bit on the nose? Join the conversation using the hashtag #Pratchat48 on social media! Guest Benjamin Riley (not to be confused with Spider-Man clone Ben Reilly) is an award-winning freelance writer and journalist. He's written for Junkee, SBS Online, PopMatters, Overland, the Star Observer and many other publications. Ben also works in AIDS research and in HIV and sexual health policy, organises queer community events, and co-hosted and produced the queer political podcast Queers with Simon Copland from 2015 to 2019. (You can still find old episodes in most podcast directories and via the Queers acast page.) For more on what Ben's up to, follow him at @bencriley on Twitter or hit up his website at benjaminriley.com.au. In other Ben news, the videogame Table of Tales: The Crooked Crown, written by a certain Ben McKenzie, is now available on Steam! As usual, you can find notes and errata for this episode on our web site. Next episode we take another little breather - it's been a long lockdown here in Melbourne, folks - to read a Pratchett short story: his take on Arthurian myth, Once and Future! It was originally published in 1995 in the collection Camelot, but like most of his short fiction you can find it in A Blink of the Screen. Send us your questions using the hashtag #Pratchat49, or via email to chat@pratchatpodcast.com. And yes, we are planning something a little different and special for our fiftieth episode in December - watch our website and social media for news on that soon!

In this episode of the Secret MENS Business podcast we speak to Aaron Little about his experience working on the LGBTQI scene, working at the LGBTQI tabloid the STAR OBSERVER, and his insights regarding the shifting culture. Star Observer has been setting Australia’s LGBTI agenda since 1979, with a long and proud history of independent journalism. They have 200,000 loyal readers who embrace our publications, which include a popular news website and social media channels, as well as their monthly Star Observer publication. From the early days of Mardi Gras, through the AIDS crisis, to the battle for marriage equality, Star Observer has been there providing in-depth and independent journalism about the issues facing the LGBTI community. Our story started in 1979. It was a time when homosexual sex was a criminal act, with people being jailed simply for being gay. Sydney’s gay and lesbian community was reeling from vicious police attacks during the city’s first Mardi Gras protest march. A wave of political momentum was building demanding equality and justice for LGBTI Australians. In this dangerous time for our community, the very first edition of The Star was printed and distributed across Sydney by our founder Michael Glynn. Throughout its history, the Star Observer has taken the form of a weekly Sydney-centric newspaper, sister publication the Melbourne Star, a monthly national magazine, and has included publishing festival guides for LGBTI festivals around Australia as well as a Gay Scene Guide magazine highlighting what’s on in the queer scene in Australia’s major capitals. Alongside this, we have maintained a major national Australian news website with a significant social media audience. Until 2019, the Star Observer operated as a not-for-profit, community-owned organisation, before it was purchased by the newly formed Out Publications, part of the AltMedia publishing umbrella. The Star Observer has gone back to its roots in the tabloid newspaper format for a special issue celebrating the publication’s 40th anniversary, with new issues to be published and distributed in Sydney and online on a monthly basis. We have built an international reputation for fearless reporting, independent from the influence of any politician or corporation. We are the news journal of record for the LGBTI community, and have been since our founding. I invited Jacob Thomas to be a guest on the podcast so that they could help me unpack some of the many questions I have about how employers, recruiters, and coaches can better support trans, gender diverse, and nonbinary professionals. And Jacob did not disappoint. This is a much-needed discussion that I hope all my listeners will be interested in for their personal and professional development. Some of the topics of our conversation include: choosing pronouns, employers and organizations looking for quick wins with what Jacob explains is “pink” dollar the recruitment of queers employees to reach diversity markers issues with dress codes conscious and unconscious bias Jacob's experience in changing their gender marker with their employer and much more. Jacob and I are friends, so the first 12 minutes is a bit of banter, where at least twice, I cried with laughter. If you want to check out the video interview, please go to my YouTube channel, where many of the podcasts are also available in video format. About our guest, Jacob Thomas: Jacob Thomas is one of Australia's most prominent leaders in sexual orientation and gender identity. A nonbinary person living in Melbourne, Jacob uses the pronouns they/them and works at the Monash Warwick Alliance as their Education Project Coordinator, where they also guest lecture in Global Studies. In 2016 Jacob received the Queen's Young Leader Award, recognizing Jacob's work on suicide prevention for Australia's LGBTIQ community. Jacob previously sat as the Coordinator of the Commonwealth Youth Gender and Equality Network (CYGEN) and represented the network at international levels such as the 61st session of UN Women's Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) and the ECOSOC Youth Forum in New York, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the 11th Commonwealth Youth Forum in London, and at AIDS2018 in Amsterdam. Jacob advises public, private, and non-profit organizations on issues related to the LGBTIQ community, diversity and inclusion policies, and queer-friendly work environments. They are a mentor to many queer, allies, and senior leaders in Melbourne and internationally. A greater speaker and facilitator, Jacob, has presented a TEDx Talk at QUT on the ideas around gender identity, is a contributor to Archer Magazine and Star Observer, and has written a personal essay for BuzzFeed about their experience coming out as nonbinary. Jacob is interested in queer perspectives in intercultural learning, feminist methodologies, and youth leadership. They are currently undertaking their Masters in International Development at RMIT. In their spare time, Jacob is a performer, designer, and sometimes drag artist. About your host: Hello, and welcome! I'm Renata Bernarde, the Host of The Job Hunting Podcast.
