Sunstone and Mark Hofmann’s Explosive Deception in 1985 (Peggy Fletcher Stack 1 of 4)

It was fun to sit down with Peggy Fletcher Stack about her time at Sunstone and Mark Hofmann. Peggy Fletcher Stack is a senior religion reporter at the Salt Lake Tribune with over three decades of experience. Peggy, also a co-host of the Tribune's weekly "Mormon Land" podcast, discussed her extensive career, offering insights into her work, her background, and some of the pivotal moments she's covered. The conversation quickly delved into the origins of her career, her time at the Sunstone organization, and even her connection to a notorious historical event. https://youtu.be/jI3Y_aw9mek Don't miss our other conversations with Peggy: https://gospeltangents.com/people/peggy-fletcher-stack/ Copyright © 2025 Gospel Tangents All Rights Reserved Peggy's long tenure in religion reporting at the Tribune spans 34 years. Before joining the paper, she was involved with Sunstone magazine and was the originator of the Sunstone Symposium. Recounting its beginnings, Peggy explained that as young people working on the magazine, they needed material to publish. She conceived the idea of holding a symposium where people could present, providing content for the magazin. Despite skepticism from some who felt they were "just kids," the first symposium in the late 1970s or early 1980s was successful, leading it to become an annual event that has continued for over 40 years. Peggy noted that Sunstone often struggled financially but ultimately persevered. Peggy's early career included a period spent freelancing in Kenya. In 1985-1986, shortly after getting married, she and her husband used their wedding money to move to Kenya to do freelance writing and photography. They chose Kenya because it was English-speaking and stable at the time. While they hoped to sell stories, Peggy admitted they didn't sell many. She described it as more of an adventure that provided a reason to travel and learn. She recently returned to Kenya for a conference with the International Association of Religion Journalists (IARJ), a group she helped found in 2012 and now serves as executive director. Sunstone and Mark Hofmann One of the most compelling parts of the early discussion was Peggy's connection to Sunstone and Mark Hofmann bombings. Hofmann, known for forging historical documents related to Mormonism, had his "findings" discussed extensively at Sunstone. Peggy knew Mark Hofmann personally and conducted the only print interview he ever gave. Looking back at that interview, she realized he was lying throughout, something she didn't recognize at the time. Peggy described Hofmann as socially awkward, noting he wouldn't look her in the eye during the interview, which she initially attributed to social skill issues but now sees as a sign he was fabricating information. Remarkably, the Hofmann bombings happened on the same weekend as Peggy's wedding, October 12, 1985. One of the victims, Steve Christensen, was a close friend, a major Sunstone donor, and a columnist. After the bombings, Peggy received calls from national media and initially suspected a business connection. However, when Mark Hofmann himself was injured in a bombing the next day, it became clear the events were tied to the documents. Peggy and her husband were warned they might be in danger, even checking their wedding presents for bombs and staying away from their apartment. This personal connection means Peggy always knows how long it's been since the bombings by her wedding anniversary. Reflecting on that time, she acknowledged her lack of training as a journalist then and the difficulty of knowing Hofmann was lying. Even LDS Church leaders were fooled. Path to Salt Lake Tribune Peggy's path to the Salt Lake Tribune was somewhat unexpected. After her time in Kenya, she and her husband moved to New York City, where she worked various jobs, including editing at a medical ethics think tank, working for the United Methodist Church communications department,

How far would you go to prevent a damaging truth from getting out? That is the question that centers around this case that includes lost treasures, forged documents, and the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS). Documents from the founders of the Mormon faith are extremely valuable to collectors and the church leadership, so when Mark Hofmann began digging up unbelievably rare pieces, high ranking officials took notice. With increasingly valuable material turning up all around Hofmann the higher the payoffs, the higher the danger. Find out how all of this is linked to the bombing deaths of a Salt Lake City businessman (Steve Christensen) and the wife of one of his associates (Kathy Sheets). --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/patrick-conn/support

Stay tuned to the end of the interview where I'll give you some actionable insights that I learned from my guest. These insights are also in the show notes. As always, thanks for listening.  Now, on to my guest for today, Steve Christensen, cofounder of Neuwly, an app for live-streaming events around the world and a platform for tour guides to connect with travelers.  Steve and his cofounder Greg believe that when people connect with others from around the world, we all become better for it. While Neuwly originally only provided virtual experiences, it's building out to become a platform for guides and travelers, to help people explore other parts of the world both virtually and in-person. Steve came to really respect what tour guides have to offer when he went on a tour in Lithuania and realized how much can be learned and experienced when you have someone knowledgeable to show you around.  Steve sees Neuwly as becoming a place where guides can start to build a following and deepen relationships in order to grow their businesses in a world where both in-person and virtual experiences are in demand. He also envisions Neuwly being a site where people can connect with their “herd,” where they can find out what their friends have done and seen in order to find out more about places they visit. With Neuwly, like many entrepreneurs we've talked to, the founders are finding a way to use tech to bring together the best of both the old and the new. I also wanted to note that Neuwly is raising a round of funding. This is not investment advice or anything like that but I figured I'd let you know just in case what they are doing interests you. Feel free to email Steve at hello@neuwly.com. Now, let's get better together. Actionable Insights One aspect that stands out when speaking to Steve is the simple clarity of Neuwly's mission: to help people connect from around the world, because it makes for more compassionate, more empathetic people. The founders are passionate about their belief that learning about other cultures is vital to making the world a better place.  Look ahead. While participating in live-streaming events is one way people can connect and learn while travel is restricted, Steve is also building the platform for what comes next, offering a way for guides to build a following and advertise their events for real-world experiences, too.  Links to Explore Further Neuwly Neuwly on Instagram Steve Christensen on LinkedIn Get in touch at hello@neuwly.com Keep In Touch Book or Blog or Twitter or LinkedIn or JSYPR or The Story Funnel Learn more about your ad choices. A new documentary, “Murder Among the Mormons,” has become a big hit this month on Netflix. It recounts the 1980s story of document forger Mark Hofmann, who tried to upset the traditional historical narrative regarding the founding of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by producing fake artifacts. When he got entangled by his own financial double-dealing, Hofmann attempted to cover up his counterfeiting by setting off separate bombs that killed one of his clients, Steve Christensen, and Kathy Sheets, the wife of Christensen’s former business partner. He then injured himself in a third blast. The three-part series offers not only a riveting whodunit dissection of deadly crimes but also a fascinating exploration of Mormon history. On this week’s podcast, co-director Jared Hess, of “Napoleon Dynamite” fame, discusses the documentary, the haunting footage the filmmakers found, the phony discoveries Hofmann pulled off (including the big one he was plotting to peddle before his crimes unraveled), the callous calculations revealed in the mind of this killer, and the lessons Latter-day Saints and their leaders can take away from the whole sad saga.

He actually made a third, which he was trying to sell them in Brazil, but I don't know how many people knew that. The second one he sells to somebody up in Idaho and I'm not going to describe him. I know it'd be interesting, but if I describe him, there might be a lot of people that know who it is. But there's a fellow up in Idaho and he sells it to him for $100,000. ... He gets $100,000 and then later on the person up in Idaho, he sees where they got the Oath of a Freeman back in New York. And they're selling it and he says, "This isn't an original that I purchased. Hofmann told me it was an original." So, he called him on the phone, and he says, "So is this isn't an original."  He actually meets with him and says, “This is not an original document, is not worth $100,000. I want my money back.” Mark doesn't have any money. And apparently an argument ensued or something. And Mark gets physically assaulted. This was the first time in his life, we know of, that somebody actually physically assaulted him. Before he's dealing with, what do they call him, Mr. Milk Toasts. You know, historians are generally laid back, calm person. I don't know anybody other than a couple that hollered at me. But most of them I don't think they do. And nobody had ever hit him before. He had bounced checks on him. He would lie to them about documents and that. And it was well known. He was like that. But they wanted to go back to him because he could provide the documents they wanted. He took orders for documents frequently and miraculously found them. But anyway, this guy up in Idaho, he beat him up. Hofmann didn't know what to think. Nobody's ever hit him before and he's a coward. That's why they bomb. Because you don't have to be there when somebody gets injured. And, so anyway, the guy says, "I want my money back and I want it next Monday," or whatever it was. Now what is he going to do? Now this is speculative, but it seems to make sense from the bits of pieces of puzzle that we put together. He says, “What can I do so he won't come after me and hit me anymore?” And he's thinking, you know, "If one of my best friends die, I'll have an excuse to go to his funeral and he won't come back. He'll give me a few days. By then the Oath will be sold back there.” And in fact, I think it was the American Antiquarian Society was meeting to discuss purchasing it again on Tuesday or Wednesday of that week. We know that because we saw the agenda for the meeting. And again, I don't know how many of the other investigators saw this, but we did. That's why this is another piece that we had that others did not, so that day of either Tuesday or Wednesday is crucial because that's when they're voting to buy it. And Schiller & Wapner convinced him they're going to buy it so he knows he's going to get it. So, he needs to postpone just a couple of days before this guy comes back and beats him up again. And so, we found in his possession a three by five card that had five of his closest friends written, their names written on it in Mark's handwriting. And by the name of Steve Christensen was an asterisk. We're assuming that he put the asterisk there. But anyway, so it was one of his five closest friends he had to kill so he could go to their funeral. The bombs came up. Steve Christensen was blown up and of course the second bomb was a diversionary thing for the police department, which they believed for several days that they were involved, not in the Salamander Letter,

Mark Hofmann's first two bombs killed Steve Christensen and Kathy Sheets.  In this next episode, we will talk about the third bomb.  Who was it likely intended for?  Was it a suicide attempt as some people believe, or was it intended for someone else?  George gives some important details on the crime scene.  Check out our conversation… https://youtu.be/F0MMJV2uW4E George: When the investigator said that Hofmann had told him the bomb fell out of the car, he said, "That's not true. He's not telling you the truth."  But when somebody is not telling you the truth, you wonder why. In looking in the trunk, they found some old documents that didn't matter. He was legitimate examiner. Everybody knew that, but they also found some components of a pipe bomb in the trunk. ... They found Mark Hofmann was waiting to see somebody at the Crossroads Mall downtown and at the time he would meet this person on a specific day at a specific time.  Hofmann made this third bomb. He went down to Crossroads Mall.  He parked his car up where the Conference Center is presently at.  It was across the street from the old Deseret Gym. And he carried the bomb with him down to the mall. We know he was there for at least an hour and a half carrying the bomb because he had gone into a local store and made a purchase there. And it had the time on the receipt. It was in his pocket. So, we know he was there. And then I think what happened, and we have to speculate, but it seems pretty good. When this person didn't show up, then Hofmann left. He walked back up to his car, which was a low sportscar. As he opened up the car door, he was still carrying the bomb. As he sits down in the seat and goes to put the bomb on the passenger seat. It hit the gearshift knob and caused it to tip and it blew him out of the car. That was totally contrary to what he said happened. Would Mark Hofmann Kill Again?

Gospel Tangents Podcast

[paypal-donation] Sadly, October 15 marks 32 years since Kathy Sheets and Steven Christensen were killed.  Shannon asks, and answers an important question. Shannon:  People have asked me, “Do you think he would ever murder anybody again?”  I believe yes and no. [This is] my own thought of it.  I believe no because he is not naturally that way.  He sort of is now.  But I believe yes because someone told me this, and I hope that it is true.  Often times when a bear hurts or kills somebody in Yellowstone Park or something like that, they have to put the bear down.  Because they say that once that bear gets the taste of blood in his mouth, he will do it again and again and again. I think that's Mark.  He's done it once.  If he did not have a motivation to do it, I don't believe he would.  He wouldn't go out and shoot somebody for no reason, but I believe he has the taste of blood in his mouth.  If he got himself into another situation where he was up a creek and didn't know what to do and was about again to be exposed, I mean that's the reason he killed Steve Christensen. Lots of people have wondered who the third bomb was intended for.  We'll get into the different theories. Shannon:  that's the reason he was parked where he was.  That wasn't just a random place to park.  It was right down the street from the McEwen Mansion.  The attorney representing the guy that was going to purchase that McLellin Collection, pay off the loan, his office was in the McEwen Mansion.  So Mark was right down to the last hour, minute, and second.  He couldn't get out of it anymore.  He was going to have to go up that road and say, I don't have it, which he believed at that point the whole thing would unravel.  It very well may have. ... At that point he may have been so irrational that that's possible.  What in fact happened was, he parked that car, sat there for quite a while and thought, “I am caught.  I am caught.  What do I do?”  He got out of the car, that bomb package was sitting on the driver's seat and he made a decision to flip it over. GT:  So you think he did it on purpose. Shannon:  Oh yeah.  Now if he believed that he could have survived that, the car did burn but there were enough papers and stuff in the trunk that had it burned completely, which it didn't, which cars don't.  That only happens in the movies.  He could have said, “Yes.  McLellin Collection right there.”  Who could have proved him wrong? GT:  Right. Shannon:  He could have come up with a story about who put that bomb there, that he was really going up to the office and then he forgot something, came back, flipped the package over.  So does he regret what he did?  No.  Was he suicidal as, “I'm trying to repent of this?”  I don't think so.  I think his hand is in the cookie jar and he's thinking still, “how can I get out of this?”  He flipped the package. ... Shannon:  To get back to that third bomb, I don't know if there was a rational reason for that.  I just use all those examples because there doesn't need to be a rational reason for it to have happened, because there was lots of irrational things.  Who was that intended for?  No idea.  Maybe he didn't know who it was intended for until that day. We'll talk more about potential victim David Christensen (no relation to Steve), Shannon's role in the McLellin Collection, and Mark's dealings with Elder Oaks, Hinckley, and Pinnock.  Who do you think the third bomb was intended for?  Was it a suicide attempt?  Was it intended for Brent Ashworth as Curt Bench thinks?  Check out our conversation! https://youtu.be/cmiAf0KXB1s   [paypal-donation]

Let's talk about the Mark Hofmann bombings & forgeries.  There are some critics of the LDS Church who ask the question, why weren't church leaders able to discern, using the spirit of prophecy the Hofmann fraud? Curt Bench:  I've heard that countless times. GT:  How do respond to that? Curt:  Well, the way I respond is that we're all in good company, because we all got fooled.  His family got fooled, his own wife and his parents, his friends and neighbors, other family, experts that tested his materials.  He fooled everyone, including General Authorities.  So I guess I'm prone to grant them, or give them a lot of slack because they're human just like we are.  As Dallin Oaks said later, unless we're given a reason not to trust, we trust people. Others note that it seems like Church bought anti-Mormon material, or material unflattering to the church's narrative in order to hide them from the public and prevent discovery of them.  Is that a fair characterization? Curt:  I mean that bothered people I think when that came to light.  From President Hinckley's perspective if I were in his shoes I would understand better the motivation I think but like I said, everything is 20/20 now in our vision.  But I can understand why that would be a difficult thing for people because it does give people the impression of trying to hide things and put things in the best light possible so I can certainly understand that perspective. Curt Bench goes into further detail on these questions.  We'll also talk about how Mark's family reacted, as well as the family of Steve Christensen, (Steve was killed in the first bombing.)  Check out our conversation…  (Don't forget to check out (parts 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5!) https://youtu.be/n0q4G5zZKdY https://gospeltangents.com/shop/transcripts/lds-leaders-detected-hofmann/

Steve Christensen was killed on October 15, 1985 when he picked up a package outside his office.  It was a pipe bomb and it blew up with a bunch of concrete nails killing him instantly.  It was a horrible scene.  Curt Bench describes how he found out about it driving to work and that he immediately called his friend Mark Hofmann to warn him about a bomber out there. A few hours later Kathy Sheets also picked up another bomb from Mark Hofmann and she was killed instantly.  Her husband, Gary Sheets had been partners with Steve Christensen.  Many wondered if this was a financial deal.  Was it a mafia plot, or was it something to do with Mormon documents?  Both men had experience with those.  Let's listen in as Curt Bench tells us about how the news unfolded to him. Curt:  I talked to Mark on the phone, the day of the bombings. GT:  Oh really. Curt:  Several times, probably six or seven times.  I called first to warn him about the bombings, well bombing at that point because there was already a lot on the news.  I was actually driving to work that morning and they said there was a bomb that had gone off in the Judge Building.  It was just a few blocks from where I worked.  They even as I recall gave the office number and it said a businessman had been killed.  I only knew one person in the Judge Building and that was Steve Christensen, so as soon as I got to my office at work I looked up in my directory and pulled up his name and there was that office number at the Judge Building and I was just sick physically.  I mean it was just horrible. ... I got the answering machine and I said Mark, this is Curt.  This is an emergency.  Please call me back immediately, as soon as you get this. A short time later he called, and just kind of light-heartedly said, Curt this is Mark.  You said it was an emergency but then everything's an emergency with you, just making a joke.  Then I told him what had happened, that Steve Christensen had been killed and there was a sharp intake of breath, “What?” like he was genuinely shocked.  I told him everything I'd heard.  It was as if he'd never heard a thing.  I warned him and told him to get his family out of the house, to get into hiding, whatever because we didn't know what was going on. GT:  I know originally it seems like because Steve was a financial thing, there was a lot of people thought it must have had something to do with his finances, but you originally thought it had something to do with… Curt interrupts:  Well I didn't know.  Nobody knew. GT:  Oh ok. Curt:  And that very day there was speculation about, did it have something to do with Mormon documents, because Steve had been in the news.  I'm trying to remember about the news part.  Certainly it was known he had been involved in trying to get the Salamander Letter. GT:  So you made the connection that you thought it could have been? Curt:  Well it could have been.  Yeah there was speculation early on about was this business related, because there were angry investors with the Sheets company, CFS. What are your reactions to the bombings?  Do you remember them? https://youtu.be/SaVSHcFtr8k https://gospeltangents.com/shop/transcripts/bomb-day-1-2-killed-october-15-1985/

Bombs in Salt Lake: Introduction to Mark Hofmann

In 1985, three bombs in Salt Lake went off in two days.  It was the work of Mark Hofmann, a master forger and now a bomber.  He killed two people and injured himself in these bomb blasts.  Curt Bench was actually a good friend of Mark Hofmann at the time as well as one of the victims killed, Steve Christensen.  Curt gives us his firsthand account of how he learned about this, and especially how he was introduced to Mark Hofmann. https://youtu.be/hxC12GXE5Ws Curt:  Well I tell people I didn't know him well as well as I wish I had, as I should have.  When you said we were good friends, we were friends, but we did a lot of business together.  He kind of established himself as a, I guess today what would we say?  [He was] kind of a rock star.  He had made some amazing discoveries of Mormon documents, the Anthon Transcript and things like that that got him a lot of attention. I met him.  I was in the same business, although we hadn't really done documents very much, maybe once in a while but we did a lot of rare books, other collectibles and so I was kind of excited to meet Mark Hofmann who had gotten all this attention and had established himself as an expert in documents as well as other things, rare books, and things.  So it made sense for me to get to know him and to do business with him and we did a lot of business over the next few years. Hoffman didn't deal in just Mormon documents. We had a Daniel Boone document {early American frontiersman}.  I'm just trying to think of some things that weren't just in the Mormon field.  Some things were books but quite often they were documents and so this was my big foray into that field.  I was a relative novice when it came to Mormon manuscripts and documents and so I kind of let him guide me in a lot cases.  When he would—he wasn't dramatic at all and didn't seem like he was trying to sell you.  He wasn't a used car salesman type at all.  He was quiet and introspective but he made a big deal about things, but often he would say, “It's a nice item.” Were any of the items caught early?  Check the podcast to find out.  (You may also be interested in our interviews with Shannon Flynn who talks about Mark's teenage forgeries!)  What do you think about this tragic story?
