Dr. Hoffmabn continues his conversation with investigative reporter Gardiner Harris, author of “No More Tears: The Dark Secrets of Johnson and Johnson.”
Former pharma reporter for the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, investigative reporter Gardiner Harris, discusses his new book “No More Tears: The Dark Secrets of Johnson and Johnson.” It details the unethical practices and numerous scandals that have plagued Johnson & Johnson over the decades, including the asbestos contamination in baby powder, the misuse of the antipsychotic drug Risperdal, the dangerous outcomes of vaginal mesh implants, and the controversial development and deployment of their COVID-19 vaccine. Harris provides a comprehensive overview of the corporate malfeasance within the pharmaceutical giant, shedding light on the regulatory failures and systemic corruption that have allowed these issues to persist.
Johnson and Johnson was founded in the late 1800s and grew into one of the most trusted brands in America for its baby powder, Tylenol, Band-Aids, then cutting edge pharmaceuticals. Today, the company is worth more than $380 billion. But behind the success, says investigative journalist Gardiner Harris, lies a wake of deceitful and dangerous corporate practices that have threatened the lives of millions.“These guys are incredibly intimidating,” he says of the company. “And when they don't succeed in buying you off, which is what they have done over the decades for doctors, journalists and lawyers, they sue.”Harris is a former pharmaceutical reporter for The New York Times. He has spent decades looking into the long history of lies, cover-ups and malfeasance of Johnson and Johnson. He joins Diane to talk about his new book, No More Tears.
A class action lawsuit launched in Auckland today questioning Johnson and Johnson cold and flu products follows similar suits worldwide. JGA Saddler has filed a suit in the High Court, claiming the producer knowingly sold an ineffective product. The US Food and Drug Administration has ruled a key ingredient in Codral, Sudafed, and Benadryl cold and flu products is ineffective when taken orally. JGA Saddler director, Rebecca Jancauskas says it's sparked a wave of legal action. "Our firm filed a claim in Australia, in December. A Canadian firm filed a class-action about 12 months ago, and there's also quite a number of claims on foot in America." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Headquartered in New Jersey, Johnson and Johnson is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. It's also one of the handful of companies that made a windfall during the pandemic with their vaccine. In fact, the Janssen shot was making the company upwards of $740 million dollar per quarter—that was, of course, before the shot was pulled off the market due to an elevated risk of serious blood clots in vaccine recipients. However, having their vaccine pulled off the market might be the least of Johnson and Johnson's financial worries. That's because just yesterday, the company announced a willingness to pay $6.5 billion dollar in order to settle nearly all of the lawsuits in America claiming that their baby powder (and talcum powder products) caused people to develop cancer. Once enacted, this settlement will be the 4th largest in US history, right behind the $7.2 billion dollar that Enron had to pay after defrauding their shareholders.

Attorneys Brady Bizarro and Andrew Silverio discuss the pending case of Lewandowski v. Johnson & Johnson, a lawsuit brought against plan fiduciaries for violating their fiduciary duties under ERISA. How did they violate those duties? By failing to negotiate drug prices and sufficiently oversee their PBM or investigate alternatives. No matter who wins, this case highlights the importance of ERISA's fiduciary duties and the gravity of the decisions fiduciaries are (or should be) making.

Over three days in the fall of 1982, seven healthy people in the Chicago area died suddenly. At first, medical examiners were baffled but soon realized all the victims had taken Extra-Strength Tylenol capsules. Public trust in the medication vanished overnight. Veteran Chicago news reporter Phil Rogers recalls how the Tylenol Murders terrified the nation and how Johnson & Johnson managed the crisis. Healthcare company Johnson and Johnson has offered nearly $9 billion to settle a claim from tens of thousands of people who claim its talc product caused cancer. We hear from a lawyer whose firm is representing 17,000 claimants who say they've been affected by the company's trademarked talcum powder product. The housing boom is definitely over. In Europe anyway. House prices in the EU have suffered their first quarterly fall since 2015, according to the EU statistics office this week. House-hunters in Germany and Denmark tells us of their difficulties finding a home. Police forces around the world have launched a major joint operation to dismantle one of the biggest criminal marketplaces online. Genesis Market is thought to have sold personal information, such as passwords, stolen from more than two million people in the past six years. The details have allowed fraudsters to impersonate their victims online without raising suspicions. Globally, 200 searches were carried out and 120 people were arrested. And, Sri Lanka's economic crisis is having a devastating effect on what used to be one of Asia's most successful emerging economies. It's shrunk by a fifth in the last 3 years alone. And that's having an impact on the population, hundreds of thousands of whom are simply packing up to leave the island. We speak to some of them leaving – and those left behind. This podcast is part of a special series featuring the 2022 finalist teams for the INFORMS Franz Edelman Award for Achievement in Advanced Analytics, Operations Research and Management Science, the most prestigious award for achievement in the practice of O.R. and advanced analytics. For more than four decades, the Edelman Award has recognized contributions that are transforming how we approach some of the world's most complex problems. Finalists for the Edelman Award have contributed to a cumulative impact of more than $336 billion since the award's inception, as well as countless other nonmonetary benefits. The winner of this year's award will be announced at the 2022 INFORMS Business Analytics Conference, April 3-5. Joining me for this episode are Dimitris Bertsimas, professor with the MIT Sloan School of Management and Najat Khan, Chief Data Science Officer and Global Head, Research and Development Strategy & Operations with Janssen Research and Development, LLC, to discuss the finalist entry from the team at Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson and Johnson (Janssen). To accelerate the development of the Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, the Research and Development Data Science team at Janssen worked with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to co-develop and refine a machine learning-based COVID-19 epidemiological disease spread model, building on MIT's DELPHI scenario analysis tool, capable of predicting future COVID-19 infection spread months in advance at a global level. This model enabled Johnson and Johnson to expedite a highly accurate clinical trial for the first single-dose COVID-19 vaccine, as well as gain valuable insight on virus variants.

The start of 2021 hasn't brought much relief when it comes to COVID-19. Cases are exploding, hospitalizations are rising and deaths are climbing. The light at the end of this dark tunnel, however, is the rollout of vaccines. So far Pfizer and Moderna have received emergency approval and distributed vaccines in the U.S., but it's been slow going. There is, however, another major player that will be joining the fight with a new vaccine. Johnson and Johnson is about to release findings on its phase three clinical trial by the end of January and if all goes well, the one-dose vaccine will be released as early as February. 45-thousand people took part in the phase three clinical trial and May was one of them. She volunteered back in December to help the cause, especially because people of color are often underrepresented in vaccine research. In this episode, May walks us through her experience and talks to Dr. Kenneth Kim of Ark Clinical Research who conducted J&J's trials in Southern California. This is an extremely informative and educational episode!
