Dr. Arto Pesola has a PhD degree in Exercise Physiology from the Faculty of Sport Sciences, University of Jyväskylä. His field of science is the causality of reduced muscle inactivity time on health outcomes in an RCT setting. Arto has been a highly visible expert in Finnish national TV and radio channels giving expert opinions on the health hazards of sedentariness and the promotion of everyday physical activity. Invited by the Finnish Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, Arto was an expert member of the committee formulating national recommendations for reducing sitting and sedentary lifestyles in Finland in 2015. Naturally, Fibion was the first commercial product to implement the new recommendations. In Fibion, Arto has developed scientific analysis algorithms and is working to ensure that the Fibion product and marketing are based on the newest scientific findings.

I was lucky enough to collaborate with him on a few notable pieces of music. 1) He played on the second super_collider LP raw digits on a track called gravity rearranging  2) I was a singer on his album Goodbye Swingtime and joined him and the bigband at the Hollywood Bowl opening for Bjork in 2003 alongside Bonnie Prince Billy. Hollywood bowl bigband? I mean come on!! 3) He joined me alongside Arto Lindsay, performing the most monumental show of my career at Sonar 2003. That show was the real unveiling of all my efforts in the lab to make an impov looping performance with max/msp. Something I'd dreamt of for years and finally made real. It was so fitting to have him and Arto come on for the final number and make a total racket with me. We just all clattered it to the ground. A moment I'll never forget and it was all down to Matthew really as it was watching him show using multiple boss echos in short looping mode that got me started on that road. A brilliant and restless musical mind that has always moved in his own lane. Host Casandra Grundstrom is joined by special guest University Lecturer Arto Lanamäki from the University of Oulu in Finland. Much of his research is qualitative and phenomenon-driven research, concerning the role of information technologies in social practices. He is currently working in the Research Council of Finland (Suomen Akatemia) funded AI-REG project (2022-2026) investigating the European Act on Artificial Intelligence. While publishing mostly in the field of IS, he champions a certain research eclecticism and a boundary-breaking ethos. His research has been published in the Journal of Strategic Information Systems (JSIS), Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology (JASIST), Communications of the Association for Information Systems (CAIS), among others.In this episode, we first catch-up with Arto's research and new AI legislation, before turning our attention to paradigms in IS.  We consider the historical saturation of positivism in the IS discipline, the leaning into interpretivism before narrowing in on a paradigm gaining attention called 'critical realism'.  What is critical realism?
