Nathan Thanki @n_thanki of Demand Climate Justice @gcdcj talks about the COP 26 in Glasgow 10/31-11/12. The people of the third world will be fighting to improve climate change. The US and the EU will be working to maintain capitalist, imperialist climate change. We hear a clip of a call that Eric Mann, Channing Martinez, and Barbara Lott holland had with Nathan Thanki regarding the Green Climate Fund. Eric Mann - “The first thing is that we are asking the governments of the World, as he is, that they have these intended goals and these intended goals must be mandatory, secondly there must be loss and damages paid to the third world, third is, the climate is moving towards 3% let along 1.5%. The strictest enforcement has to be begun with the United States and there has to be penalties for non-compliance, and it all hinges on giving the third world power at the United Nations, and that's what Demand Climate Justice is all about.” @EricMannSpeaks We also hear a report from Channing Martinez and the Bus Riders Union @BusRidersUnion on the racism on the Metro and the LAUSD. Celebrated vocalist and instrumentalist, Sam Ndlovu, is probably best known as part of the iconic Afro-fusion band, Stimela, which was founded during the 1970s by the late Ray Phiri. The group has not been very active since about 2019, but in May of this year, Sam returned to the music scene with his first solo single, La Bhembe. And a 4-track EP, Carry On, came out last Friday, which also features his second single, Ngomgqibelo. Born in Mpumalanga, he discovered his love for music at a young age and by the time he was in his mid-teens, he'd already started his own band. In the late 1990s, he had a group called Black Chain which performed at various festivals, often sharing a stage with Stimela. Then in 2010, Ray Phiri contacted him and asked him to join the band. And the rest is history as they say. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, we look at the embodiment of industrialization: the steam train. We recap some of the main features of the Industrial Revolution, and then turn our attention to how railways changed time, space and behaviour. We also investigate the significance of trains in South African history. To understand the symbolism of railways, one needs some background information on the mineral revolution in South Africa, as well as the associated migrant labour system that developed. We talk about the musical heritage around trains, e.g. Shosholoza and Hugh Masekela's Stimela. Sources used for this episode include: Wolfgang Schivelbush's Railway Journey, Crash Course Railroads, Percy Mabandu's article in New Frame, as well as that of Charles Leonard.Support the show (https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=Q8KGSAT37YCPA&source=url)
Black Coffee, real name Nathi Maphumulo, serves as Durban's house music elder statesman. His style is, in his words, “home-brewed but future-focused.” Maphumulo's recording career began in 2005 with a remix of Hugh Masekela's 1972 hit "Stimela" and has gone on to include five solo albums, including 2015's 'Pieces of Me,' which has been certified double platinum in South Africa. Here, Black Coffee discusses the early club sounds of South Africa, breaking through in a burgeoning local industry and more.

South African music legend Ray Phiri says SABC's 90% local music across all its 18 radio is a good start. Speaking to AM Live on SAfm anchor Sakina Kamwendo during the ForumAt8, Phiri says groups like Stimela, Harare, Bayethe, Sakhile and many others, were beneficiaries of the cultural boycott in South Africa under the apartheid government which forced them to produce music that was marketable internationally.
