Podcast by Frequency Horizon
I gathered together a collection of some of my favourite memories from my time producing my Frequency Horizon radio show for Pirate Cat Radio in Los Gatos, California. In this aircheck, a Guadalajaran DJ gives us a tour of his neighborhood, we take in a dog surfing competition in Pacifica, interview a Canadian with a sense of humor, connect with some French interviewees via a phone booth set up at Burning Man, and are treated to a performance of traditional music at a waterfall in Puerto Vallarta.
I hit the slopes one final time this season—this time at Palisades Tahoe. And I head out to Bakersfield, California to take in the wondrous spectacle that is Lightning in a Bottle music festival, checking out sets from the likes of Skrillex, MIA + Rufus du Sol, and even scoring an interview backstage with Nia Archives!
I fret about whether I'm about to get scammed as I head out to Lightning in a Bottle Music Festival 2024. And ANDON delivers a fantastic warm-up guestmix called "La Barosa" from across the Atlantic Ocean.
Mat calls in from Long Beach in the Tofino-Ucluelet area of Vancouver Island, Canada. Plus, San Francisco-based Rave Mom sends in a sick guestmix—and tells us about how she actually grew up in the area our radio station now covers.
We check out the various booths along East Cliff during the Logjam Longboard surf competition. And WYA? (Where You At, from San Jose) provides a dope guestmix in the second half of the show. This is the Frequency Horizon! Tune in live each week from 10-midnight on Friday on kpcr.org or 92.9FM in Los Gatos, California (or Campbell or San Jose). #staychill #surfing #ocean #waves #edm #electronicmusic #rad
In addition to a varied music stream of chill proportions, we'll take you on a hike in Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park and contemplate the benefits of surfing with a pair of rad Guatemalan brothers just north of Santa Cruz. Tune-in live every Friday night from 10-midnight on 92.9FM Pirate Cat Radio kpcr.org.
A couple European exchange students we meet by the beach in their van have a surprisingly inspiring perspective on journalistic possibilities. DJ Yuka Yu (@yukaswat) teaches the fundamentals of electronic music mixing. And our program manager randomly appears when when I'm surfing instead of completing my show—and yet it's kinda awesome...
Since the solar eclipse rolled through North America this week, we decided to replay our mini-doc from the 2017 Oregon Eclipse music fest. DJ Little John was at that event. And in this we have the first-ever "sneak peek" mini-mix from him—straight outta Shanty Shack, in Santa Cruz. This show first aired on 92.9FM Pirate Cat Radio in Los Gatos, California. Tune in each Friday at kpcr.org from 10-midnight.
We go from a rainy surf at Steamer Lane on a Wednesday evening in Santa Cruz, to linking up with some dudes who appeared on the Frequency Horizon a few years back (when we were on the air in Canada). We'll check out the London Elektricity show in Oakland. And DJ Melisa delivers her third guestmix… just days after we land on the cover of Metro Silicon Valley (at least as part of a sidebar)! Here's the songs she played in case you want to purchase them from the artists who created them... 1. “Intro” — Alan Braxe, Fred Falke @braxe1 @fredfalke 2. “Haven't You Heard” — Alan Fitzpatrick, Patrice Rushen @alanfitzpatrick, @patricerushen 3. “system” — salute @saluteaut 4. “mr useless” — shygirl and sg lewis @0800shygirl 5. “Saving Up” — Dom Dolla @domdolla 6. “No Regrets” — Catz ‘n Dogz. @catzndogz 7. “Seismic” — AC Slater, Chris Lorenzo, Fly with Us @acslater, @chris-lorenzo-1 8. “Release Me”— Mark Knight, Armand Van Helden @markknight, @armandvanhelden 9. “If I Can't Get Down” — Mike Dunn, Mousse T @mousset 10. “Lose My Mind” — Jamie Jones @jamie-jones 11. “Like the Old Days” — Barry Can't Swim @barrycantswim 12. “e-motions” — Erika de Casier, mura masa @erikacasier, @muramasamusic 13. “To Love Again” — Vandelux, Sofia Kourtesis @vandelux, @sofia-kourtesis 14. “3am” — Baauer, AJ Tracey, Jae Stephens @baauer This episode first appeared on 92.9 FM Pirate Cat Radio in Los Gatos California. Tune in each week from 10-midnight Friday on kpcr.org or via the Pirate Cat Radio station on the TuneIn app.
In this episode, we sip wine alongside diplomatic missions from around the Pacific Rim on a vessel named the Klamath in San Francisco. There were Canadians hanging out on board, but we turn our attention to the Chinese consulate and the Japanese foreign affairs office to try to give you a glimpse of where the Pacific world is headed. And we interviewed Kiki from the innovative Geek Wonderland brand out of Shanghai: https://www.showroomshanghai.com/brand/1204 Plus we've got a brand new track from Bicep, and other amazing drum n' bass, house and techno-influenced numbers...
There's a lot of movement happening on this week's Frequency Horizon episode… Thaddeus Laton meets up with a hitchhiker and ends up putting on an EDM festival in Ninilchik, Alaska. Neumonic drops a deeply-personal track in advance of a DJ tour. Max Newman brings us a 1-hour Balearic mix from Spain. And Aphrodite touches down in San Francisco as the jungle he helped pioneer rises to prominence, once again.
In this week's episode of the Frequency Horizon (broadcast on Pirate Cat Radio just as 38 inches of snowfall was underway), we offer an on-the-slope view of how one independent ski hill (Sierra-at-Tahoe) is doing a couple years after a devastating wildfire ripped through the property. Shout-out to the marketing department for giving us a behind-the-scenes look at how a local-focused mountain ticks. We take you inside a Heavenly gondola of the sort made famous where a pour soul got trapped inside overnight a few weeks back. And we hear firsthand from "lifties" themselves 1. About what it was like to cope with a slow start to the season and 2. Some of the underground DJs tearin' up the Legion dancefloors this year. Given the recent suspected fentanyl deaths in town, we'll cap off the episode with an interview with State Senator Dave Cortese about efforts underway in Sacramento to get a handle on the overdose crisis. Of course, we weave it all together with some top-shelf tune-age to help get you fired up to hop on a lift and carve some quality turns. Theme: Butterflywingtip "BBB" Tune-in live each week at kpcr.org or via the Pirate Cat Radio analog feed at 92.9FM in Los Gatos and San Jose!
From hitting the waves at Montara State Beach during a milky twilight, to reconnecting with Fava MC (and discovering he's a teacher back in Germany), to getting to meet my favourite author Sheila Heti (who also happens to be Canadian but has a rad global outlook), I've been reminded of just how magical life can be. (Not to mention I put out my second-ever newspaper as an official editor). https://www.sheilaheti.com/ I learned more about arranging sentences from a delightfully quirky yet utterly confident literary master, about managing frequencies on the fly in a live club environment (@mcfava), and pondered how natural forces can change your life in an instant. And I'm sharing it all with you guys—to a curated electronic music soundtrack. Plus, I got a surprise DJ mix sent over from none other than Italian mixmaster Michael B DJ (@michaelbofficial). Hope you enjoy!
Do you ever wonder how California plans to handle global warming? Are you curious about the longterm impacts of last year's storms (you know, the ones that were so bad they were categorized as natural disasters)? Well, on today's Frequency Horizon program, we have the answers. Because we'll interview a trucker hauling giant boulders from the Cali interior to West Cliff Drive in Santa Cruz. Plus, we bump into the dude who makes those 3D-printed surf fins he says could democratize surfing in the Third World. And I'll get myself a new surfboard (finally). And in the second hour, DJ Melisa returns for her second guestmix, just after a move to Las Vegas to link up with a new newspaper. There's plenty of bangers, atmospheric numbers, chill and energetic tracks on offer. Hope you enjoy!
We chilled out for January (and I hope you enjoyed the "mixtapes" in the meantime) but now we're back, with a vengeance! We've been collecting-up plenty of oceanic content and delicious electronic tracks for y'all to take in. And I hope you're ready for what's about to be unleashed. Because this week we're taking stock of things from the white sands and emerald seas of Carmel Beach, interviewing bodysurfers during the first-ever USA Bodysurfing competition at Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz and then handing over the keys to DJ Ergot for his second guest mix for the Frequency Horizon. Tune in each week at kpcr.org from 10-midnight pacific time or 92.9FM in the Los Gatos / San Jose area.
We take you along with us to an O'Neill movie premiere in the Pleasure Point neighborhood of Santa Cruz. And we remember some of our favourite radio moments of the year from our journeys far and wide. Plus, I wrapped some moody #house, emphatic #electro-#pop, and #liquid #dnb rollerz up with a bow and put them under the tree for ya!
Today on the program we've got a solid mix of dubstep, trance, house, and—my favourite—drum n' bass. We're enjoying our new space on the dial—92.9 FM in the “South Bay” portion of the “Bay Area” (in Northern California, of course). We'll still have surf-style segments in the weeks to come, but after the cross-continent journey last week, we're dishing up a pure-music show this time 'round. Hope you enjoy! And make sure to tune in at KPCR.org if you haven't given that a shot yet…
We ruminate on the evolving state of the Detroit metropolis while paying homage to the birthplace of techno. We meet frequent Frequency Horizon collaborator Jamie Cowling face-to-face on the East Coast and take in the Jersey Shore on a first-look. We'll also tap into energy from Toronto and Windsor, Ontario, as well as Fort Wayne, Indiana, along the way... Listen live 10-midnight on Pirate Cat Radio kpcr.org or via the TuneIn app!
In this week's episode we play ambient-influenced tunes from Andre 3000 and ThenVersusNow and dance numbers from Barry Can't Swim and Jem Cooke, before sprinkling in some #poppunk and #midwest #emo. And we'll play our interview with investor Jay Eum about the implication of the APEC summit in San Francisco, not too far away. But it all leads up to our documentary about the 2023 O'Neill Coldwater Classic that went down last weekend in Santa Cruz. We even managed to score interviews with the big winners—Michael Dunphy and Autumn Hays. Listen live each week from 10-midnight on Pirate Cat Radio at kpcr.org or via the TuneIn app.
In this week's episode I opine about my new fitness foray that got me lost on the side of a mountain. As the actors' strike draws to a close, we bring you a longform interview with Desi Kole, a woman who worked on Pirates of the Caribbean who is now directing her first-ever feature film. And we'll take a roadtrip from Los Angeles to San Francisco with Bengali singer and philosopher Elma Siddiqui. Listen live each week from 10-midnight on Pirate Cat Radio at kpcr.org or via the TuneIn app.
We take a jaunt down to the lighthouse on West Cliff Drive in Santa Cruz to see 10+ foot waves pummeling the Monterey Bay. And we've got a solid mix of #organic #dubstep, #minimal #ambient #techno and some more commercial #dance tracks, too. Listen live every week from 10-midnight at kpcr.org or via the "Pirate Cat Radio" station on the TuneIn app.
I don't know if you saw the UCSC students in costumes out and about mid-week last night around Santa Cruz… but I have to say, I love how everyone's getting into the Halloween spirit here across the Monterey Bay. In this week's show we'll head up to the Makoto show in San Francisco and play a variety of moody tunes.
This episode features an original composition by Dr. Jevgenij A. Raskatov, an associate professor in chemistry and biochemistry at UCSC, who can make stringed instruments sound both mysterious and incredibly moving at the same time. We take you to a “bear”-celebrating street festival in San Francisco that randomly helps us round out our coverage of global affairs. And we visit Natural Bridges in Santa Cruz for Welcome Back Monarchs Day. Due to a broadcast glitch, last week's DJ Bumbacat mix didn't make the radio version. So we'll be replaying that in the second hour.
We interview the relative of one of the victims of the Hamas attack on the Supernova psychedelic trance music festival in Israel. And DJ Bumbacat delivers a fantastic mix that spans multiple genres of dance.
Frequent Frequency Horizon collaborator Jamie Cowling sends in an original heartfelt song, and it turns out it mixes perfectly with hip-hop and drum n' bass. And DJ Natty from Vancouver Island shares a guestmix from the 2023 Pachena Bay Music Festival.
On this week's episode, we meet a couple from London who've been living in a tent for weeks and finally got the chance to hit up a sick drum n' bass show—after an experience in Yosemite National Park that was literally life-changing. Plus, we've got an awesome “introductory” drum n' bass guestmix from DJ Rambo—sent in all the way from New Zealand (after a nautical voyage from Fiji—and some computer chaos).
Michael Simler returns my bicycle, which he'd rented for Burning Man 2023. And despite the hectic, rainy circumstances at this year's event, the bike is somehow in better condition than when he left. He gives us the blow-by-blow of his first every Burn via a longform convo. And DJ Ergot—a Santa Cruz County local I met down at Steamer Lane just hours after last week's episode—delivers a guest mix with plenty of dirty and bouncy basslines. #BurningMan #electronicmusic #storytelling #DJ #synthesizers Cover photo courtesy of Michael Simler Theme music: Butterflywingtip "BBB"
This week's episode features some pretty genuine poetic content from eastcoaster Jamie Cowling and a guest mix from Salinas EDM DJ @kalveronic2000. Theme: Butterflywingtip "BBB" Catch our weekly radio show on KPCR.org and the TuneIn app each Friday from 10-midnight Pacific (or 101.9FM in Santa Cruz).
On this week's Frequency Horizon, we're heading to Burning Man! Well, I didn't make it there—something I was a little bummed about at first, but then I felt much better about as time went on (as you could imagine)… But my bicycle managed to make it to the Playa without me… In the second hour, we have a special guest mix crafted specifically for the Frequency Horizon by soupANDsalad. @soup-and-salad Trust me, it's dope. Please support the artists by purchasing their songs and streaming them on your favourite platforms! soupANDsalad guestmix: To Travel the Path Unknown – Goat Black Mesa – Biosphere Flechazo – FaltyDL Mozaic – Hashman Deejay Drama (KG Remix) – Swing Ting [feat. In this week's episode we head around the globe—and beyond~ We update you with new information about an upcoming Afrobeat show we previously told you about, and learn about the connection of one of our listeners to famous Kenyan funk musicians. Friend of the show Resonant Dog—aka Bernardo de la Torre—surprises us with an exquisite organic house and downtempo set that taps into his growing appreciation for musical traditions from around the world. Hey, guess what? Ana's got a fantastic poem about the ocean for us (reach her at graziosi.ana@gmail.com for collaborations). And we'll even stop by a lighthouse dance party featuring DJ Little John during the blue moonrise, where we'll look up at the sky with Santa Cruz Astronomy Club member John Arkley. #dance #DJmix #electronicmusic Theme: Butterflywingtip "BBB" Shy FX x Kojey Radical x Nile Rodgers "Good Morning" S.P.Y. It was under a pleasant sunset at Avila Beach—and at other San Luis Obispo-area surfside haunts—that we assembled this week's episode. It features an interview with Southern Californian DJ Ravell, who tells us about a collaboration he's been working on with Jack Trades (a fellow Angeleno), titled "Calling." Soundcloud producer MIKELOPS drops us a line after we let him know his track's been selected for the broadcast. And DJ Melisa takes over the second hour of the show with a cohesive mix that blends disco-y house with more mellow selections—telling a water-inspired dancefloor story that's sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. Listen live each week Fridays on 101.9FM Pirate Cat Radio in Santa Cruz or on kpcr.org (or via the Tune In app). Original air date: Aug. 25, 2023. Here's what's on tap for our third installment for Pirate Cat Radio 101.9 FM Santa Cruz: We stop by a street festival with a skate competition on the East Side to snag an interview with talented Santa Cruz artist Jimbo Phillips—who tells me about the role of the ocean in his creative process; we rolled into downtown San Francisco for a chat with MC "all the way from Germany" Fava and Hospital Records DJ / producer extraordinaire Hugh Hardie; plus, a garage sale stop turns into an amazing original poem about the character of this particular surf town. These tasty morsels are interspersed between grinding house, watery indie, emotive drum n' bass and exploratory techno. The week, we take you to the premiere dog surf comp of the year—the World Dog Surfing Championships at Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica, California (Aug. 5, 2023). We interview a Swiss broadcasting team covering the event, incorporate some quality play-by-play action from OneTakeMedia.com's Dan O'Connor, and even interview a winner who calls Santa Cruz home. Plus, we dip down to Hollywood—to a pool party at the Roosevelt Hotel—to get you the scoop on the latest upbeat house release from the EC Twins. In this week's episode we're hitting the slopes—in the middle of the summer. That's right. For our inaugural KPCR LP 101.9FM Pirate Cat radio (Santa Cruz, California) episode, we're heading out on a midnight foray through Yosemite National Park to beat the traffic to make it to Mammoth Lakes for a July snowboarding session. We've also got a sweet interview with Hospital Records DJ Fred V on his first visit to the Bay Area as a solo artist. This is all couched in a diverse array of music from across the electronic music spectrum—including a new one from Chase & Status, a favourite of ours from DJ Sasha, a classic from the Prodigy, that mainstream crossover from HorsegiirL—and many more. From connecting with the innovative All Gas No Brakes crew of YouTubers in Echo Park, to tense moments with Mexican authorities on surf and dental jaunts south of the border, to a heartfelt memorial segment to early-adopter Dylan Roberts, to a 30-minute chat with melodic techno DJ Christian Löffler, there's quite a bit on offer in our debut Dublab "Guest Session." In this episode we descend on Venice Beach as Los Angeles County slowly starts to open up -- after all its surf spots were closed during the coronavirus pandemic. We'll head to the sand as surfers catch their first legal waves, in the process of delivering this one-hour episode to 99.1 Venice Radio, a low-powered underground-minded radio station covering a section of West LA, as they put it, "From the Speedway to the Freeway." The music has been specifically curated for the broad spectrum of folks weathering the viral storm in Venice -- everyone from the tech nerds of Silicon Beach, to the oldskool hippies holdin' it down, to the celebs passing through, to the DJs stuck producing and consuming livestreams in their rooms. The Outlaw Ocean, Ian Urbina's book of New York Times investigative reporting about the lawless seas, is arguably the most thorough account to date of the seedy side of ocean life. We're dedicating the entire episode to highlighting the themes behind those stories, playing tracks released as part of the Outlaw Ocean Music Project, which taps producers of house, ambient, drum n' bass, dubstep -- and beyond -- to give this oceanic reporting an additional dimension. Grab your galoshes and pirate bandanas – or your reporter notebooks if you prefer – because, we’re about to set sail. To complete our re-launch trilogy, we have an action-packed episode ushering us back to Los Angeles just as the coronavirus forces us to rethink everything. We process the new reality with a sci-fi radio play, a neurofunk tribute, a conversation with documentarians of the Syrian conflict, and on-the-ground interviews as LA's stay-at-home order goes into effect. COVID-19 Radio Drama > Pt.1 0:00 > Pt. 2 - 36:19 > Pt. 3 - 1:28:42 Written by: Drew Penner and Jason Bowers. Performed by: Leslie Pine (Esmerelda), Drew Penner (Dom), and Jason Bowers (Rick). Interview with the For Sama team -- Waad Al-Kateab, Edward Watts and Hamza Al-Khateab -- who ended up getting nominated for a best documentary Oscar, shortly after I met them. 58:19 On the Frontlines > Emma 21:04 > Amanda 47:30 > Spanish Speaker 1:23:00 Mini-mix homage to Virus Recordings 50:28 Cover Art "The Journey" by Nancy Wood (which was actually inspired by the coronavirus landscape) http://www.nancywoodartanddesign.com/ Paula (Ricarda) Freitag reconsiders the value of art in the midst of a pandemic that's made the world topsy-turvy. > 1:39:15 https://paulafreitag.wordpress.com/ Theme by Nasoshnik #GetMorePlays Episode 109 Tracklist: Theme: Nasoshnik “Carve it Up” Roy of the Ravers @acidwaxa “Abstract Ibiza” Ardalan @ardalann “Lifted feat Claire George” Royksopp @royksopp “Were You Ever Wanted” Incl. s/o to parkour dude Lucas Pearson https://www.instagram.com/lucas_pearson_parkour/ Lyft segment includes Alien Air Music @alien-air-music https://kxlu.com/dj/alien-air-music/ and then Travis Holcombe of @kcrw in the background https://www.kcrw.com/music/shows/travis-holcombe Mall Grab @mallgrab “Bust” Maribou State @mariboustate “Feel Good feat. I made it through a year of highs and lows in the City of Angels! So lets fire up the Aphex Twin (@aphex-twin-official) and contemplate how far we've all made it in the last 12. It's crazy to think in that time I've managed to live in Los Feliz, Venice Beach, Westwood, Koreatown and Silverlake (and everywhere in between and beyond, right?). Plus, I've done a wide assortment of gigs in the process -- background acting, videography, podcasting, fresh salad seller, fine dining server and more. We start with some clips from a Werner Herzog doc about crashing in the jungle. And I describe one particular post-club tableau, following an epic drum n' bass night with DJ Goldie at the helm (@metalheadz). Plus we'll take you with us down to a public #art show breathing new life into a concrete spaceship-looking sculpture that never really worked properly. The six-story, 60-ton Triforium by artist Joseph Young was supposed to exude synchronicity through 1,494 multi-coloured glass prisms. But symbolic of DTLA itself, its futuristic dreams came smack up against the challenges of reality. Luckily the Triforium Project captivated Los Angeles by finding workarounds to get the thing up and running again for a series of super cool shows. 1:26:35 - Original performances created specifically for the public art show by: $3.33 (@thr33thirtythr33) with "Celestial Spam" Ben Babbitt (@benbabbitt) with "The Pull of the Swerve" And Ben Browning (@benbrowning) of Cut Copy (@cutcopy) with "Light Minded People" Music: Nympho (@nymphoofficial), Forest Swords (@forestswords), Fred V & Grafix (@fredvgrafix), KOAN Sound (@koan-sound), Kolsch (@kolsch), Mefjus (@mefjus), MorMor (@mormor_music), Orbital (@orbital-4), Polo & Pan (@polo-pan), Objekt (keinobjekt), Oz (@co-lab-recordings-uk), Shimon (@shimon-audioporn), Benny L (@bennyldnb), Souls of Mischief (@soulsofmischief), N'to (@ntonto), Worakls (@worakls), 16 Bit Lolitas (@16bitlolitas), Camp Lo (@camploofficial) 44:02 - Rad Reviews of: Weather McNabb (@user-75280168) and Post Death Soundtrack (@postdeathsoundtrack)
This we go on an in-depth tour of LA's Little Tokyo with infamous video gamer Chazo (you can read about him here: http://supersmashbrosgeneral.wikia.com/wiki/Chazo). He'll tell me how anime is a community based on much more than overly sexualized imagery and hilarious theme songs -- and he'll try to kick my ass at the arcade. Check him out on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/chazostatue 33:54 - After a few trips to West Hollywood council in my cross-town rambles, I decided it might be appropriate to mash up a public address from @goingdeepwithchadandjt with Vespa by Bicep. I mean, who can argue with adding in some historical context of the ancient vespa debate vis-a-vis our modern trials and tribulations with the e-scooter? You should follow those dudes now. Also, it even led to the actual Mayor Pro Tem to actually tune in to this very podcast. Expect more civic-ambient mash-ups in the episodes to come... 48:16 - And I meet up with dnb mainstay @marcus-visionary as he graces East LA with #heavy jungle and #liquid rollers. 1:11:29 - Rad Reviews - Deb Montgomery "All the Water", Elza "Nothing's Wrong" @elzanoise, The Goldwyn Experiment "Avenue B" @thegoldwynexperiment Music in the episode from: @bloodorange, @dannylharle, @dialogg, @easyfun, @iiris, @spacehardware, @feelmybicep, @jubei-1, @king-krule, @devonlisinski, @houndstoothlbl, @forestswords, @hannahdiamond, @nightbassrecords, @denissulta, @hauznated, @prince_rama-1 + @duskymusic Theme: @nasoshnik

Follow him here: https://twitter.com/GregReveret 39:10 - Rad Reviews: Gideon King & City Blog “Upscale Madhouse” @user-107470090 Halfwait “The Official” @halfwait Eric Frisch “Water Into Gold EP” @ericfrisch 1:08:35 - Crooked Flower “Blooming - The Light Rail Sessions” @crookedflower 31:52 - Calgary producer Indiazi, in the midst of Stampede madness north or the border, explains the method behind the madness of Asiatic Shores. I love how beaches come into the mix for her. @indiazi 1:23:25 - We head to the CNN building in Hollywood and catch them playing one of the best Boards of Canada tracks of all time over their exterior speakers, as immigration discussion rages on the TV in the middle of the night. @boardsofcanada @cnn 1:29:15 - Okay, back to Venice Beach to walk along the strand and hit up the skatepark. But the helicopters are circling, once again, up along Abbot Kinney Blvd., and we get the low-down on crime in action from some young skaters nearly caught up in the action. 1:32:33 - America Fuck Yeah! We head to a Fourth of July parade that actually kicked off with parachuters and a ridiculously emphatic USA chant in the Pacific Palisades. Hope you enjoy some of the on-the-spot audio and commentary we have to serve up like apple pie. 1:39:35 - I hopped on the bus and headed to Westwood in mid-afternoon. I bumped into Matthew Koehler (pictured), a 22-year-old from Missouri, and I randomly asked if he wanted to share some of his unique thoughts on his pad of yellow legal paper. I was pleasantly surprised by the result. Here’s how he describes the stream of consciousness poetry: “This is just a concept that I kinda tousled with in my astral imagination. It’s about the mechanics of movement, motion, intention, desire and how we marry all those together within our chakras.” Music: Logistics, Hybrid Minds @hybridminds, Optic Rose, Marcus Intalex @marcusintalex, Klangkarussel, Ivy Lab @ivylab, Guy J @guy-j, Dead Mans Chest @dead-mans-chest, M.F.S. We enjoy moving into the triple podcast digits with an episode that's full #fire from beginning to end !!! Cold Open: We hit up a celebration of Los Angeles drum n' bass promoters reaching their own milestone > 1,000 editions of the weekly Respect night. In the downtown LA warehouse they had LTJ Bukem, the man known for invigorating atmospheric and liquid drum n' bass genres at the point of inception (who Blue Lunar Monkey @bluelunarmonkey had nothing but good things to say about playing alongside), to make it official. @ltj-bukem 9:20 - Emmy award-winning writer and executive producer with Seinfeld, Simpson and Rocko's Modern Life credits to his name, Ron Hauge steps into the Frequency Horizon limelight after brunch. You'll have to listen to find out why he told us: "I'm on drugs." 17:40 - Rafa the Brazilian psytrance DJ known as Nitrous comes to LA and is thrilled to be in Koreatown. He's trying to get new clients and improve his English. @djnitrous 41:06 - We meet a Santa Monica character who claimed to be an original Motley Crue member. Odean tells us about his plan to frustrate PETA. 48:00 - Deadmau5 decided it was time to do a full orchestra-electronic mash-up in an extremely professional manner. The energy at the second day of the Where's the Drop? festivities at LA's the Wiltern was moving. The sincerity of the production was thrilling. And even though some were surprised it didn't break out into a full-on dance party, you could almost hear personal music growth happening all around. Musical director Gregory Reveret did an amazing job. 1:05:45 - Rad Reviews: Ajay Mathur - Little Boat (@ajaymathurmusic) Ryan Hutchens - The Last 10 Years (@ryanhutchens) Good Field - Surface Tension (@goodfieldband) 1:13:46 - We muse on the legalization of recreational weed (in California and soon in Canada) from Hollywood in a very legit on-the-street yet typically Frequency Horizon-remix fashion. 1:23:24 - I headed through the hills to West Hollywood and squeaked into the LA premiere of Come Sunday, the brand new Netflix production from podcast and public radio kings This American Life. We'll put it in front of the ole' #ambient looking glass to see what deeper perspective might shine through. Here we'll give you a glimpse of how Ira Glass handled a potential pitfall during the QnA and hint at the significance of meeting a potent broadcaster. @this-american-life https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1690967/ Music: @churchoftheundecided @montydnb1 @spydnb @gred_music @crestofthesyndicate @blackdownofficial @overjoymusic @piezopz @u-ziq-official @unknownmortalorchestra @kidnap_music @nthngnthng @hot_chip @toddterje @mario-basanov @flightfacilities @oberonorebo Track of the week from: @superpitcher_official @r-srecords https://soundcloud.com/r-srecords/talaboman-dins-el-llit-superpitcher-remix-1
In this episode I reflect on the significance of “Number 99” as it relates to the Great One and my own journey from Canada to the U.S. We’ll take you past Venice Beach buskers to the mountains of Big Bear for a comical-but-legit modern rap parody and into the heart of Hollywood, following the delivery of an antique chair from Orange County. Cold Open: Shots fired — I tried to go to a burlesque show but wasn’t allowed to bring my bag in. So I went back to my truck in order to drop it off. I got into a daze listening to podcasts and was jerked into action by the helicopters overhead. Just outside the show I encountered these two dudes, who describe a shooting that had just taken place. 28:35 - I pay homage to one of the radio greats — Joe Frank — who I only discovered through his untimely passing. I think his writing is on par with greats like Hunter S. Thompson and Mark Twain. Do yourself a favour and educate yourself here: https://www.joefrank.com/ 76:00 - Joining the hoards trying to “make it” in Hollywood, I headed up to Burbank early in the morning to sign up as a background actor with Central Casting. There I met 19-year-old Krill Mikhaylow, from Russia, and 33-year-old Gwaii Thyword, from Tanzania (85:55) — a fellow radio presenter. They each had a different take on what acting success is all about. 94:50 - Big Bear party house freestyle in the vein of modern trapped-out mumble rap. 63:46 - Track of the Week Xinobi “Real Fake (Jonjo Jury rmx)” @jonjojury 1:08:59 - I hear the Hulk tell me in his own words what it was like to come to LA and crash on the beach, as he struggled to make it. From mumble rap to comic book character speech, we’re definitely covering all the modes of diction this week. 1:20:24 - Rad Review: Oakland’s Idiot Grins (@idiotgrins) “State of Health” and Rebel ACA & French Monkey Wrench “John Wayne” (@user-20948793) 1:26:18 - Michael Jackson talks about the time a kid at his school came close to shooting it up, and why he decided to join the walk-out to protest gun policies in the US. Morphing into a new phase, I head down the West Coast, meeting electronic music producers and filmmakers, and start to come to a deep appreciation of what Los Angeles is all about. 34:05 - First we'll weave dope electronic tunes together, as always, along with a night out in Seattle -- including a lesson on brostep history from the Shift Crew @press_shift and watching a truck hit a car then drive away with supreme arrogance. 1:06:29 - Rad Reviews: Henry Metal @user-194436281, Jason Vitelli @jasonvitellimusic, Meanr Mynr @meanrmynr, Joel Phil @joelphil, Yaysh @yayshplz Music: @moderat-official, @dc-breaks-uk, @the-black-eyed-peas-official, @dannybyrdmusic, @othersdubstep, @tippermusic, @filwoody, @fortromeau, @gruen_glas_music, @ocandverde (track of the week). Includes an interview with Leonard Avance @user-369863709 about his first ever track! At the time he was going to call it Beauty, but ended up going with the title Runaway for the song he ultimately shared with the podcast. 1:30:50 - And we cruise around LA's freeway network on Golden Globes night with director Richard Fox, who helps us contemplate how music is a universal language, something he's making a documentary about. Thanks Tuff City... it's been a slice. But now I'm outie. 31:01 - Environment Canada meteorologist Doug Lundquist explains the "magic" behind the stunning sunset along the horizon all day, as the waves began to pick up. It was the perfect setting to work on my final show. 59:13 - The emailed-s/o from former treeplanting homie @omar-shihottie means the world to us here. Hope you enjoy our premiere of his slow-jam "Empty Bottle." 1:24:31 - Rad Reviews: Patrick Grant @patrick-grant-9, Sleep Science @sleepscienceband, TALIA @talia1975, zenxienz @zenxienz 2:02:57 - OFFICIAL ALBUM RELEASE: Culture Crawl ~ Tuff City's 2017 Homegrown >>> https://soundcloud.com/frequencyhorizon/sets/culture-crawl-tuff-citys-2017 Featuring: Roy's Bag, Praxis Life, @garvies, Little Saturday, @tsimka, BUTTERFLYWINGTIP (@truezoorecords-com), @cosmic-target, @the-royal-youths, @pudfluff, @lovelife2020, @ginga-slice Music: @spectrasoul, @deadmau5, @deeklineofficial, @deccoooo, @four-tet, @etherwood, @entershikari, @erobique-1, @sashaofficial, @ducksaucenyc, @defekt-music, @photay, @mumbaiscience, @black-moth-super-rainbow-official, @bop, @unityengine
