Well hello pod fans, here's another beautiful chat about the greatest thing in all our lives, music. This time we have a true DJ legend, the incredible DJ Food is in the house. DJ Food aka Strictly Kev has been making breaks beats and visual treats for over 30 years now. His work with Ninja Tunes in the 90s brought so much joy and helped establish the label as one of the UK's most important imprints. Kev was Trip-Hop before it had the name, he was a pioneer of audio visual effects, supported the Beastie Boys at Brixton Academy and remixed Matt Johnson's The The with the kind of deft touch that few could match. Not only that he was genuinely one of the nicest people we have had on the show and even came over a night out! I think you are going to love this interview. Before all that though we are going to discuss bawdy women with Judith Owen, Judith is an incredible blues singer who has a new LP out celebrating the pioneering women of the the blues who laid the foundation for the likes of Megan Thee Stallion and Lil Kim long before women could even vote! At the top of the show Deb and Eamon discuss the their T-Shirt game and ask why men are so annoying. That's What Goes Around this week and we hope you love it!BIG thanks to @Marke23 for hooking us up. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Kevin Foakes aka DJ Food in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.fourcornersbooks.co.uk/books/wheels-of-light/ DJ Food is an electronic music project currently headed by Kevin Foakes (also known as "Strictly Kev"). Originally conceived by the members of Coldcut on the Ninja Tune independent record label, the project started in 1990 on the premise of providing metaphorical "food for DJs". DJ Food released the Jazz Brakes series, with Jazz Brakes Volume 3 being the most successful. The records consisted of collections of breaks, loops and samples that could be used for mixing, remixing and producing.
Hello and welcome back to the Ninja Tune podcast with your host Azariah Mai. On this episode Azariah will be sitting down with Edinburgh born, London Based producer Barry Can't Swim to chat about his upcoming EP 'More Content' dropping this June 24th. He'll give us a run down of his musical journey so far, we'll hear about some of the artists that inspire him at the moment and also some of the music he listened to growing up.
“DJ Food is best described as Food for DJs, simple as that, just flip it around and it begins to mean something entirely different."DJ Food is a project that started back in 1990 when Jonathan More and Matt Black's Coldcut innovation lab started producing collections of breaks, beats, loops and samples which were ideal for mixing, remixing - metaphorical food for DJ's - as well as actually for our own armchair listening and the no-so-armchair dancefloor. The project attracted like-minded collaborators like Patrick Carpenter, Paul Brook, Paul Rabiger, and Issac Elliston and eventually the mantle of DJ Food was passed into the hands of Strictly Kev (aka Kevin Foakes). It's a real honour to have a chat with one of the continually most inventive, future thinking and experimental DJ's of the past 30 years. I Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is a music podcast that does music interviews differently. I'm Giles Sibbald and I'm talking to extraordinary musicians, DJ's and producers about how they use an experimental mindset in their lives to amplify their own creativity, pursue new challenges, overcome fears and bounce back from mistakes.- brought to you by Hey Sunday, the mothership of the experimental mindset™.- podcast logo and art by Tide Adesanya, Coppie and Paste
Interview with Matt Black, co-founder of Ninja Tune and one half of Coldcut. We explore his relationship with ambient music via some song selections that have signposted his life and also play music from and speak about the @0 ambient compilation he put together in aid of the charities Calm, Mind and Black Minds Matter. We discuss and play music from Ryuichi Sakamoto, Irresistible Force, Specimens, Coldcut, Steve Reich, Steve Roach and many more and get into the mind of this fascinating artist. This show originally aired as a Moving Sounds interview on Soho Radio.
Jon More, one half of cut-and-paste collage kings Coldcut and co-founder with Matt Black of Ninja Tune record label, joins turntablist, crate digger Strictly Kev of DJ Food as we dig deep into the wild and wonky world of sampling - the borrowing, plundering, adapting and re-imagining of existing audio, songs and sounds to create new audio, songs and sounds. Sampling might have started off as a countercultural underground cut-and-paste technique used by experimental artists but it ended up powering a huge amount of hip-hop tunes and some very big hit records. We hear some of Jon and Kev's favourite sampling selections, learn about the creative use of the tape recorder pause button, and delve into sound art, musique concrète and pop cultural pick-pocketing down the ages. Strictly Kev has been involved with the multi-producer DJ Food project on NInja Tune for over 25 years, being the sole remaining member for over 15. He's DJed the world over with Food originators Coldcut and PC as well as performing 4 deck Audio Visual sets with Solid Steel radio main man, DK. From 1995's 'Recipe For Disaster' onwards, he's mixed 100s of hours of audio for compilations (Including Coldcut's Journey's By DJ mix), radio and the web using his 30+ years of experience and vast record collection. Rescoring The Monkees' cult classic film ‘Head' on turntables or inviting Paul Morley to narrate a history of cut and paste music on his ‘Raiding the 20th Century' mix are just two examples of personal projects he created during the 00s. An avid collector of records, comics, toys, original art, music memorabilia and vintage sci-fi books, he has enjoyed a career as chief designer for Ninja Tune since the early 90's, running parallel with his music making. In 2010 he was responsible for the entire look and design of the Ninja Tune XX campaign and releases that celebrated 20 years of the label. In recent years he's written articles for numerous wenbsites and publications and frequently documents his collecting finds on his djfood.org site. At home with vinyl, digital or audio visual content, he's a member of the 45Live DJ crew and a champion of the leftfield with a love of sci-fi, collage and psychedelia.

Usually when I post a new show I blather on about what's been going on in my life for a bit. But not this week and that's because our guest deejay is Strictly Kev, AKA, DJ Food! I've been a fan of DJ Food since first discovering him (or them, at the time) on a Ninjatune compilation album. When I started producing my electronic music show, solipsistic NATION, I had DJ Food on my list of people I absolutely had to have on the show. It took a while but eventually Kev appeared on solipsistic NATION with a live recording of his album, The Search Engine, performed at the FullDome, in the UK. Kev later was also kind enough to contribute to my Friends Mix. When I launched SOUNDWAVE I once again reached out to Kev to put together a mix for the show and once again Kev was generous enough to assemble an absolutely stunning mix of beauty. I know you're going to love it as much as I do! Before I get out of here I want to tell you about Kev's latest project, an album called Citizen Void by Celestial Mechanic. The music is a companion to the debut novel by designer, illustrator and typographer, Rian Hughes, ‘XX – A Novel, Graphic'. It's huge and is a beautifully-designed tome that clocks in at nearly 1,000 pages. Join us next week when our guest deejay will be David Oliphant. See you then! Today's guest deejay is Corey Parlamento who comes to use by way of my old friend, Steven Howard (check out Steven SOUNDWAVE mix here). I'll be honest, I know absolutely nothing about Corey but when Steven Howard suggested I have Corey on SOUNDWAVE I didn't ask any questions. Steven's taste in music is impeccable and if he recommends a band or a deejay I will not hesitate to take him up on it. Corey is no exception. Corey will talk about his music but I will spoil one thing here. Corey is a deejay at AshevilleFM and the focus of his show is soundtracks. The instrumental soundtracks. The atmospheric soundtracks. The foley work used in soundtracks. This resonates with me because as long as I can remember those are the parts of the soundtracks I love the most. Before I even knew there was such a thing as ambient music I desired to hear music that consisted of those moments of the soundtracks that filled me with wonder or gave me the chills. That's exactly the kind of show Corey produces and the mix you are going to hear on today's show. I know you're going to love it. Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Strictly Kev, aka DJ Food. Nothing new to report this week besides the usual COVID-19-related tragedies, social unrest and climate and ecological collapse. So let's get right to today's show. Our guest deejay is Jason Engling. I'm not sure how I first discovered Jason except that I fell in love with his music after hearing his track, “sometimes i lay in fields at night”. So much so that I invited Jason to come on solipsistic NATION to showcase his live performance that was recorded in the Darkroom in Chicago. And when I launched SOUNDWAVE Jason was one of the first people I approached to contribute to the show with a mix. Join us again next week when our guest deejay will be Strictly Kev, aka DJ Food. See you then! This month’s edition of the Ninja Tune Podcast finds our producer Jack Smith in conversation with Annie Gavrilescu of the charity Help Refugees. Ninja Tune staff were recently volunteering in the town of Calais, Northern France, playing a small part in the inspirational work that a number of charities are doing there in aid of refugees. In this interview we try to get a better idea of the challenges charities are facing, and why their work is becoming increasingly vital even as the conditions of refugee populations fades from the headlines. The music in the podcast is provided by 'The Calais Sessions’, an album recorded in a makeshift studio in the so-called ‘Jungle’, a former migrant and refugee camp that once stood on the outskirts of the town. You can find the album by searching 'The Calais Sessions' in Bandcamp, with all proceeds going to Citizens UK. The opening track is a recent recording of Ahforom, an Eritrean migrant living in the woods around Calais who had made his own Krar (a traditional Eritrean instrument) out of scrap materials. Find out how to donate or get involved at HelpRefugees.org.
This month's edition of the Ninja Tune Podcast finds Nabihah Iqbal in conversation with Kieran Yates, a music and politics journalist and co-author of 2011’s ’Generation Vexed’. Coming off the back of a panel discussion at a recent screening of Omar Majeed’s ‘Taqwacore: The Birth of Punk Islam’, the pair discuss communicating themes of resistance in their work during an age of worldwide political upheaval, and how simply expressing your identity can be an act of defiance in the current climate. Iqbal traces back the influences of new album ‘Weighing of the Heart’, exploring what it means to make guitar music after throwing off her initial moniker and unabashedly inhabiting her own skin.

Originally conceived by the members of Coldcut on the Ninja Tune independent record label, the project started in 1990 on the premise of providing metaphorical "food for DJs". DJ Food released the Jazz Brakes series, with Jazz Brakes Volume 3 being the most successful.
