A superb drama documenting how reactor 4 at the Chernobyl power plant exploded in 1986 and the ways in which the Soviet Union tried its best to cover it up. Starring Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgård, Jessie Buckley and Laura Elphinstone. In addition, her time working on The Crucible at the Old Vic, particularly through the intense Act 3 of the play where the girls conduct their “victory dance” in the court. The Smile just finished the first leg of their European tour and as always there is plenty to talk about. Rocking new songs, Thom getting cranky with chatty crowds, and a fantastic one-off performance with the London Contemporary Orchestra. Also, we discuss the Smile's eclectic playlists for BBC Radio 6 Music, an interesting interview with Noah Yorke's “industrial” music duo Hex Girlfriend, Jonny's upcoming eight-hour organ piece, Colin's first solo release, and alas, more Radiohead music used in prestige tv. Come for the Smile, stay for our most fun song sommelier yet!

In this episode, Dan and Sofia chat about everything from spatial audio design, scoring for TV and film, her vocal processing, favorite gear and orchestral plugins, what it's like scoring for documentaries, and more. Drum & Lace, also known as Sofia degli Alessandri-Hultquist, is a versatile artist and composer hailing from Florence, Italy. Her music defies genre boundaries, blending sampled field recordings, lush synths, chamber instruments, and electronic beats, reflecting a chameleon-like nature. In 2022, Drum & Lace unveiled her debut LP, "Natura," on the ambient vinyl label Past Inside the Present. The album features contributions from the London Contemporary Orchestra and Italian drummer Valentina Magaletti. Her live performances often incorporate audio-visual and spatial elements, showcasing her fascination with the synergy of music and technology. With notable film and television projects in her portfolio, including AppleTV+'s 'Dickinson' and NBC's 'Good Girls,' Drum & Lace is a distinguished artist in her field, and she is currently based in London, UK, while working on her second LP. KEY TAKEAWAYS: The difference between performing on stage and recording in a studio is night-and-day. When you find like-minded artists who appreciate each other's talents, you have a winning combination. Sometimes it’s the accident that makes the music. It’s called working with what you have. BIOGRAPHIES:: SON LUX BIO: From the start, Son Lux has operated as something akin to a sonic test kitchen. The Academy Award® and BAFTA-nominated band strives to question deeply held assumptions about how music is made and reconstruct it from a molecular level. What began as a solo project for founder Ryan Lott expanded in 2014, thanks to a kinship with Ian Chang and Rafiq Bhatia too strong to ignore. The trio strengthened their chemistry and honed their collective intuition while creating, releasing, and touring six recordings, including Brighter Wounds (2018) and the triple album Tomorrows (2021). The result is a carefully cultivated musical language rooted in curiosity and balancing opposites that largely eschews genre and structural conventions. And yet, the band remains audibly indebted to iconoclastic artists in soul, hip-hop, and experimental improvisation who themselves carved new paths forward. Distilling these varied influences, Son Lux searches for an equilibrium of raw emotional intimacy and meticulous electronic constructions. Son Lux has most recently scored the new Daniels film for A24, Everything Everywhere All at Once (March 2022). The full score album features new collaborations with Mitski, David Byrne, Randy Newman, and Moses Sumney, among others. Based in New York, Rafiq Bhatia is the first-generation American son of Muslim immigrant parents who trace their ancestry to India through East Africa. Early influences such as Jimi Hendrix, John Coltrane, and Madlib—as well as mentors and collaborators including Vijay Iyer and Billy Hart—prompted him to see music as a way to actively shape and represent his own identity, not limited by anyone else’s prescribed perspective. When Ian Chang describes his creative process, the phrase "third culture” keeps coming up. Born in the colony of Hong Kong in 1988, Chang has lived a nomadic life. Stationed out of New York for ten years and since relocated to Dallas, Texas, he built an impressive roster of progressive pop collaborators such as Moses Sumney, Joan As Policewoman, and Matthew Dear, among others, all while performing internationally and recording as a member of Son Lux and Landlady. Ryan Lott makes his home in Los Angeles but grew up all over the United States. Music was the one constant in his formative years spent at the piano. In addition to an extensive career writing music for dance, he has become a sought-after composer for advertising, television, and film. Lott’s feature film credits include The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby (2014), Paper Towns (2015), and Mean Dreams (2017). He has co-produced and co-written music for and with Woodkid, Sufjan Stevens, and Lorde. BIOGRAPHY: QASIM NAQVI Qasim Naqvi is a drummer and founding member of Dawn of Midi. On this special edition of All Songs Considered, Bob Boilen speaks with Jónsi, from the Icelandic band Sigur Rós, about ÁTTA, that group's first studio album in more than 10 years. Coming out 26 years after they released their first album, ÁTTA is music the group made over years, first in informal reunions in Jónsi's basement before and during the COVID pandemic, and eventually in collaboration with the London Contemporary Orchestra. The unmistakable singer talks about how it felt to have the band playing together again after a decade and reveals some of the meaning behind the first single from the album.

In today's episode of Sync Music Matters I'm talking to TV & Film composer and solo artist Danny Mulhern. Danny is a very philosophical guy and we go pretty deep in today's interview, exploring improvisation and flow state as a tool for creating music. Flow state can be defined as: “mental state in which a person performing some activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energised focus.” We talk about overcoming procrastination or what Stephen Pressfield in the War of Art, refers to as “resistance” And Danny generously shares about a difficult period in his life when he fell out of love with music. His love was ultimately rekindled through collaboration and ultimately the “human connection” which had been missing for some time. We go Under The Skin with the movie What They Had and talk about a upcoming project about the Meaning Crisis cognitive psychologist John Verveake Danny Mulhern TV & Film Composer and Solo Artist Biog Danny Mulhern is a composer, multi-instrumentalist and producer who in addition to writing for TV and film, releases his own unique brand of instrumental music. Much of his recent work has been with the London Contemporary Orchestra on records and film scores, including the critically acclaimed What They Had, starring Hilary Swank, Michael Shannon and Robert Forster. Other Film and TV scores include long-running BBC forensic crime drama Silent Witness, BBC wildlife documentary The Natural World and entertainment shows with Derren Brown, Matt Lucas and Simon Pegg. His own music is best described as contemporary classical with an ambient/electronic crossover. To my mind Danny's music is wonderfully textural and he often plays with polyrhythms as he explores philosophical ideas around improvisation, intuition and collective intelligence Look out for his forthcoming album Singing Through Others. Which is Inspired primarily by conversations around sense-making and the meaning crisis. Some of Danny Mulhern's Musical Influences Jimi Hendrix Paul McCartney John Lennon The Beatles Joni Mitchell Brian Eno Bob Dylan U2 - The Clash Aztec Camera Crowded House - The Specials - FKA Twigs Max Richter Jóhann Jóhannsson Hans Zimmer Rob Simonson Some of the things which inspire Danny Mulhern: Ian McGilchrist Steven Pressfield - Get Back (The Beatles Documentary) John Vervaeke (Awakening from the Meaning Crisis Rebel Wisdom (Youtube Channel) The Social Dilemma David Baddiel
This week Declassify welcomes on aboard a guest that is quite remarkable and someone who reflects much of the spirit of the podcast – interdisciplinary practices, cross-genre listening and collaboration. Shruti is a composer, producer, and conductor from Los Angeles. Her work has spanned the film/tv, pop, and concert worlds, and she often finds herself involved in projects that mix genres and experiences. She has worked at Hans Zimmer's Remote Control Productions and collaborated with artists including Alicia Keys. Her work has been used by/for The National Geographic, The United Nations, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and the 2016 Summer Olympics. In fact, Shruti hosts her own show "Let's Shake On It" centered around bringing together esteemed and diverse musicians in conversation and collaboration in hopes of increasing transparency in the music industry and eliminating genre. And In March 2020, Shruti founded Sound Travels, a remote hire platform and educational resource to help musicians during COVID and beyond. In this episode, Shruti and Victoria examine what is means to make music that expands and breaks the mold of classical, and how we can make music new, exciting and imagination together. Heba Kadry, Sarah Davachi, Marta Salogni and Faten Kanaan discuss why limitations can push creativity, how instruments can be an extension of the body, and why sounding “human” is better than pure perfection. Egyptian-born, Brooklyn-based mastering and mixing engineer Heba Kadry has worked with the likes of Beach House, serpentwithfeet, the Mars Volta, Yaeji and former Music Life guest Mykki Blanco. She also collaborated with Bjork on the iconic Utopia album, and worked on a number of film soundtracks, including the Oscar-nominated biopic Jackie. Grammy-nominated engineer, producer and mixer Marta Salogni started out as a live sound engineer in her home town of Brescia, Italy, before moving to London in 2010. She has since worked at some of the city's most renowned studios with artists including Bjork, M.I.A, fka Twigs and Frank Ocean. She was nominated for a Grammy in 2019 for her involvement in Bon Iver's i,i album. Inspired by cinematic forms and folklore traditions, Brooklyn-based composer and producer Faten Kanaan builds cyclical patterns in her music that she uses to tell stories. Having immersed herself in New York's electronic scene during the late 2000s, her most recent release, the spellbinding A Mythology Of Circles, is inspired by classical mythology and medieval music. Canadian-born, LA-based composer and performer Sarah Davachi “builds temples out of tone”, and is best known for her minimalist electroacoustic sound. She has held residencies around the world and collaborated with artists such as William Basinski, Ariel Kalma and the London Contemporary Orchestra.
With a list of collaborators that include the likes of Anoushka Shankar, Nitin Sawhney, Talvin Singh OBE, Kae Tempest, Jocelyn Pook, Oi Va Voi, and Bianca Gismonti, and London Contemporary Orchestra, amongst many others, Memphis-born, US-Indian Violinist/Composer, Fullbright scholar and co-founder of ensembles Quest Ensemble and Balladeste Preetha Narayanan embodies a unique musical personality which transcends multiple genres, cultures, and countries. On completion of a Masters's and a doctorate in Creative Learning at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, the London-based artist is also a practicing Yogi and a certified yoga teacher from the renowned Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram institution in Chennai, India has gone on to be one of the city's most valued members of the global arts community. In this contemplative conversation we catch up for the first time since our last encounter collaborators at an intimate concert in London and riff on the experiences of growing up brown in white social paradigms, the practice of Yoga as a philosophy, and the impact broad-minded parenting from a generation less privy to labels can have on the subconscious mind and eventually the practice of an art. On this podcast, we'll be showcasing the mouthwatering Tasting Menus from leading cultural and music PR agency WildKat, as well as acclaimed composer, sound artist and performer Drum & Lace whose latest EP "Further" was released last week. WildKat Tasting Menus WildKat's Press Assistant Robert Shone writes: "It is well known that a careful combination of sound and taste can elevate the sensory experience of both parties. Back in 1997, Heston Blumenthal enhanced his fish dish 'Sounds of the Sea' through utilising an iPod of sea soundscapes to create 'sonic seasoning'. We here at WildKat are doing the reverse. Throughout the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic, WildKat will be enhancing many virtual classical music experiences with a carefully paired item of food or drink. Every week, our team will create a brand new Menu of 14 livestreams, specially paired with 14 recipes. Each week, a member of the WildKat team will also provide a recommendation of a TV show, book, or a piece of art to help stimulate and inspire during this trying time." To sample these Tasting Menus, please visit wildkatpr.com/news or WildKat PR on socials. Drum & Lace Drum & Lace (also known as Sofia Hultquist) is an Italian-born composer, sound artist and performer that writes and creates music for film and media. Among her impressive credits include fashion documentary "The First Monday in May" (dir Andrew Rossi), the AppleTV+ Original Series "Dickinson" (created by Alena Smith) and season 3 of NBC “Good Girls” (created by Jenna Bans & Bill Krebs). Other notable collaborations include leading brands such as NARS, Always, Tanya Taylor, Girls Who Code, Squarespace, as well as theatre production company Saudade Theatre and contemporary dance company Heidi Duckler Dance. Drum & Lace's performance work often includes sound installation and spatial audio elements, at events such as Moogfest and National Sawdust. Her latest EP "Further" was originally commissioned as a new work for Heidi Duckler Dance that features field recordings, samples from Yellowstone National Park's online archive, electronics and strings performed by the London Contemporary Orchestra. Inspired by Emily Dickinson's poem "Further in Summer than the Birds," an ode to nature, the EP depicts the journey of a bird. I talked to Drum & Lace last week from her home studio in Los Angeles about the creative inspiration, research and compositional processes behind the release, as well as the broader ideas and issues arising from the EP. Most notably, this includes the importance of protecting, listening to and caring for nature, actions that many people having been reflecting on over these last few months. Many thanks to Hannah Goldshlack-Wolf for bringing this fascinating and thought-provoking listen to my attention and arranging this discussion, and to Drum & Lace for taking the time to talk especially for this podcast. Here is something to brighten up your Monday, an eclectic assortment of tracks from British composer and musician Danny Mulhern. In the coming weeks he will release a new album on 1631 Recordings. Titled 'Reflections On A Dead Sea' the album sees him work alongside the London Contemporary Orchestra who have worked previously with the likes of Actress, Radiohead and many more. The album is an ethereal assortment of sounds and looped orchestration which is almost cinematic by nature. When we invited Danny to record a mix he indicated that he was not a DJ as such so what we have here is a rather brilliant playlist of tracks which have helped inspire and determine a path forwards.

Following a string of seasoned moviemakers such as Luc Besson, Doug Liman and Steven Soderbergh, we bring you a relative novice this week in the shape of Benedict Andrews. At least - a novice in cinematic terms. For Benedict is one of the world's foremost theatre and opera directors, who makes the transition to the screen with psychological thriller Una. Given this is Benedict's first film, much of the conversation focuses on the differences between the mediums in which he's worked. It also gives us an opportunity to play you examples of music from his stage productions, including extracts from Alex Baranowski's smoky, cinematic score for Streetcar Named Desire, which starred Gillian Anderson. But there's plenty to discuss when it come to Una too. Starring the ever excellent Rooney Mara and Ben Mendelsohn, the narrative centres on a woman confronting an older man about a illicit sexual relationship which took place in their past. The film is scored by Benedict's friend Jed Kurzel, whose work we discussed at length during a previous show with Jed's brother, Justin. Jed has developed a reputation as a composer of serious weight, as evidence by the fact he and the London Contemporary Orchestra recently provided the music for Ridley Scott's Alien Covenant. Hardly surprising, then, that Benedict turned to his old mate on taking the plunge from stage to screen ...
