With two releases on Toy Tonics, a record under past guests Rhythm Section, as well as showcasing music from artists such as Ross From Friends, Baltra and Seb Wildblood on their own Squareglass imprint, we are certainly excited to bring you an episode from such impeccable selectors: Athlete Whippet. The duo met at London's Goldsmiths, with a passion for music bringing them together. One now works at !K7, the other developing live sets for the likes of Priya Ragu, Berwyn, and Lapsley; their spare time is spent crafting incredible music with a live bass, guitar, piano, and some hardware synths and samples. Their Bside selections pay tribute to their influences and musical connections; records on Tartelet, Rhythm Section and Toy Tonics, incredible artists like Max Graef, Paula Tape, Jitwam, and COEO all making the cut. EP 08. Funk and Hip hop this episode… Welcome to episode 8 of Underground House, Funk n Techno podcast, I'm Pete Burquette, this is Underground Funk. Got 23 funk and hip hop tunes, of which there are 10 edits, 4 remixes and 1 unreleased track. All new spins … Them Changes - Thundercat (Brainfeeder) (DE Edit) Do It - Beastie Boys (Grand Royal Records) Chilled. by Speechless (Speak less, Listen More) In Flux by DJ Shadow (Island Records) (DE Edit) - Released before ”Endtroducing” was released, set the template. I'm playing an edited down, sped up version of it, as the original is 12 minute long epic, more for home listening and space travel, and is really good. Stepping Into Tomorrow - Madlib (Blue Note Records) (DE Edit) - classic ”Shades of Blue” album. I've done a DJ edit of it here, but the song itself is a reworking of Donald Byrd's 1974 song of the same name. Erykahs Gun - DJ Harrison Stashboxxx album on Ropedope label Just Kissed My Baby - The Meters (DE Remix) Rhino, Reprise, Warner Records (and other record labels too). It's the Meters, so it's like trying to find a source for the Bible … in this case, of FUNK Cabaceira BY FloFilz (Melting Pot Records) While You Doooo - Teebs (Brainfeeder records) Vibrations - Al Dobson Jr. (Rhythm Section International) Break - Jurassic 5 (Interscope Records) From the classic Power In Numbers album You've Heard - Daedelus (All City Records from Dublin, Ireland) (DE Edit) Hell Yes - Beck (Interscope) on Guero album (DE Edit) Wider, Git Hub - Ratgrave who are Max Graef, Julius Conrad (Apron Records) Do It (till you're satisfied) by B.T. Express (Roadshow Records) (DE Remix) Beatless Reunion - Diplomatic Enjoy Unreleased track by me. Actually made to have a beatless start and end for an earlier version of this mix, like a mix tool, but ended up doing the mix differently but still keeping the track in B Boys Will B Boys - Black Star (Rawkus Entertainment) (DE Edit). Bubble and Slide (Nightmares on Wax Remix of Sabres of Paradise (DE Edit) on Warp Records Jazz 104 by Max Graef (Tartelet Records) (DE Edit). Jazz 104 is a reworking of ”Popular Instruments” by Paul Parrish and James Lansing sound, a cool find, where I think this is the drummer of Bread on a hi-fidelity system demonstration record, which I think used to come with the 1st component home stereo systems! I combined both of these tracks so there's a drum intro, so that I could then DJ blend. Party Pts 1 and 2 - Midnight Movers from their Follow The Wind album on Buddah Records. This is a lost classic where no version exists of this on Spotify and no good vinyl copies exist anywhere, so I was lucky to be able to pull a remix out of it by playing a new bass, drum parts, etc while keeping as much of the original as possible. I almost gave up, but I think has ended up being the edit or remix I like the most. Beep It by Japanese legend Cornelius from his/their 'Sensuous' album (DE Edit). I saw these play live in Sydney, Australia, a while back, they were excellent. Power to the People - Public Enemy (Def Jam Recordings) (DE Remix) This is basically the instrumental version of Power to the People with extra percussion added in, different mastering, it's kind of a remix. The original is on the deluxe version of Fear of a Black Planet, which if you like Public Enemy has lots of little intrumentals and alternative versions, all of which stand well on their own right because of the Bomb Squad's, PE's production team, ”wall of samples” production approach. Songs in this mix (or ones like them) can be found in the ”Underground Funk (Afro soul, 70s, beats, breaks, stones Throw)” playlist on Spotify, Youtube, Soundcloud and Deezer Cover is Mr. Sly Stone More shenanigans and related treats can be found at: Underground Funk on Spotify Diplomatic Enjoy Soundcloud Instagram Facebook Twitter

Boy are we thrilled to bring you the latest instalment of Bside, this time incoming from Germany! This one is sent in by a true inspiration of ours - co-founder of Money $ex Records (alongside Max Graef - another favourite of the podcast), an exciting DJ, and an even more impressive producer ... Glenn Astro! Glenn Astro as been behind some truly beautiful musical projects, he is known for his creative and jazzier productions of house. If your unfamiliar with him, a great place to start would be 'Kilometer Disco', on the C-side of his album 'Throwback' where wonkey synths weave in and out of piano chords and saxophone solos. ‘Gemini', the B2 track of his 2015 release ‘Hologram', has long been a cherished peice of our Bside collection - a punchy house track full of funky melodies that are sure to tear up any dancefloor. This Bside mixtape is a taste of what makes Glenn Astro tick : a multi-genre journey of hypnotic and percussive rhythms. From relaxing ambiance to mesmerising bongos, smooth brass and soothing vocals, to downtempo electro and breakbeat, nu-jazz and reggae edits, all the way through to an energetic burst of pure DnB euphoria. Big thanks to Molly Hickey for the artwork. Check out her instagram - www.instagram.com/mollytriesart/ Enjoy.

Max Graef is at the centre of his own little musical world that includes being co-foudner of Money $ex Records and part of the Oye Records and Box Aus Holz crews. It’s a world of loose house grooves, jazzy influences and disco flourishes with lo-fi aesthetics that has spawned two essentials albums—on Tartelet and Nine Tune respectively—as well as countless singles. More recently he has delved into techno, though, proving that he is an inquisitive artist who has plenty of tricks up his sleeve. He is a wizard on a range of outboard gear as well as having some very real playing chops when it comes to keys, guitars and percussion. As a DJ his organic style always comes through, which means his mix for us is an impromptu thing that calls on lots of different grooves. Sometimes hurried and minimal, at others spacious and deep, it’s a showcases of all the many influences that Graef distills into his own productions and is a nuanced listen that stands up to home listening. Included along the way are a couple of forthcoming solo tunes, as well as one with long time musical sparring partner Glenn Astro, so have fun picking them out.

In just a couple of years, Glenn Astro has emerged at the centre of an exciting new micro-scene. The German producer is a student of hip hop, funk, soul and jazz who uses that knowledge to imbue his own sounds with a looseness and roughness that makes them immediately appealing. Words like dusty, deep and woody always come to mind when listening to his music, and so far it has landed on Tartelet, Box Aus Holz and of course his own Money $ex Records. Last year he also put out an excellent full length with label co-founder Max Graef on Ninja Tune which went in cosmic new directions, and in 2017 he has continued to impress with his instinctive DJ sets. His mix for us is a one hour distillation of all these sounds. It’s variously lunges and romantic, then more club focussed and beat driven. There are some lovely cover tracks, plenty of jazzed up grooves and flourishes of disco, all knitted together with a great sense of pace. There is a live and authentic feel to much of the music that makes it sound almost like a studio jam than a mix, and that’s another reason you'll play it over and over.

The sculpture of sound is an innovative and individual process by which no two musicians can truly align. Max Graef stems from a background in hip hop, jazz, funk and soul. House plays less of a role in his day to day existence than his releases to date might perhaps indicate. Someone once said that all music, was to a degree a form of jazz. Whether there is much truth in this is debatable, but Max Graef has succintly managed to integrate influential elements from an array of genres within his multi-faceted sound. This summer Max Graef will play at @farmfestival in Somerset, a festival which has made a name through its tasteful curation and musical eclecticism. In honour of his appearance we were able to reach out to him to contribute to our exclusive Ransom Note mix series for what is a special assortment of sound in motion.

We present them without track listing so you can focus on the mix; not the next song. August’s second mix comes from one half of the brother-duo party A Running Melody, vinyl-head Alan Blancato. Working in several facets of the music industry, Alan decided to focus on his own artist career a few short years ago and has been throwing regular parties in NYC hosting artists like WOLF Music, Max Graef, Iron Galaxy, Fred Everything, Man Power and more. With the A Running Melody party and mix series, Alan and his brother Andrew wanted to give forward thinking artists a platform to showcase the music that influences them and drives them to push their creative boundaries. We’re always big fans of that here! Alan’s podcast for us is a vinyl-heavy mix with deep cuts from the worlds of house, tech, and disco. Rare records mixed with modern classics form this hour mix, giving you an idea of what to expect at this tastemaker’s events. Raised in London, DJ Caspa has been playing records since the late 80's and his vinyl collection reflects decades of dance music. He has worked with many of London's leading pirate stations including Pressure FM, Magic FM, and Rinse FM before it was granted licensing, and is considered as a true veteran of the underground, championing new producers such as Applebottom and Liam Geddes. We're really excited to welcome him on this mix blending lots of recent Deep-House cuts and uncovered experimentations and jazzy House gems from the likes of Imyrmind, Max Graef, Glenn Astro, Fouk and many more. *Cover picture by Eddie O'Keefe: http://www.eddieokeefe.com/ Please credit if you're sharing this mixtape.

Giuseppe D'Alessandro - aka Kisk - is the owner of Apparel Music, a label based in London but with multi-cultural roots. After years spent paying his dues in Milan’s historic clubs, from Old Fashion to Amnesia, in unauthorized centri sociali or ‘squat clubs’, fashion shows and radio work, he turned his attention to production. He explored a variety of genres, from trip hop to swing, passing through jungle, West London and Detroit house, to deep house, while never abandoning jazz – the wildest and most impeccable of all - progressively building a digital project. Out of this came the concept of Jazzy, the ability to make jazz and electronic music communicate. This passion is also manifest in the Oneboy project - musical instruments played live to a DJ set. link: @kisk @apparel-music

The 37th Avenue Red Podcast comes from Force Placement (real name Jason James) from the West side of Los Angeles in California, USA. Jason has been DJ'ing regularly around his massive metropolitan hometown since his late teens over a decade ago. He sent us this mix and we liked the selection and felt it added something unique to the series, a vinyl-only mix fusing House & Techno that is deep, rhythmic and strange with lots of spacey melodic tracks scattered throughout. We took out some time to have a brief Q & A with Jason about the mix, how's tricks and what's been happening in the music world over in Los Angeles! Q. Hi Jason! What is the music scene like in LA for Electronica/House/Techno at the moment? It's a massive city so you'd imagine there to be a lot going on? A. The scene is pretty vibrant right now, lots of great underground events and solid bookings every weekend. Recent events that come to mind have had Bok Bok, Jacques Renault, Untold, Max Graef, Gerry Read etc. For a while it was mostly illicit warehouse parties but the cops started busting them more so it's died down a bit in that respect, but still lots of great events at bars/clubs to check out. Q. I read that in LA, the clubs closed at 2am which gave rise to a culture of illegal warehouse parties. Is that what you are referring to that "died down"? A. Yea clubs close at 2. It's state law in California so people threw illegal parties but the LAPD started cracking down on them hard. Resident Advisor did an article about it (http://www.residentadvisor.net/news.aspx?id=25170). They talk about the Omar-S party that got busted, I was there! There were like 20 cop cars and helicopters flying around, shit was crazy! Q. So, have you played at any gigs that got busted? A. Never. But it would be seriously frustrating! I know that it can be pretty devastating for the promoters here too. However, we have a deal worked out with the venue for our Black Lodge parties so we can go past 2. Q. So does this early closure time encourage an after-party culture that spills out into house parties? Does this help relatively unknown DJ's get noticed at after-parties where DJ's/promoters end up after a 2am close? A. Yeah definitely, there is a massive after-hours culture! I suppose it can actually help DJ's to get that initial exposure, more visibility/recognition in the underground scene. Q. Could you say a couple of words about your Black Lodge party you mentioned and how it started? What's the format and music policy? A. Black Lodge was my buddy Vikas Malhotra's (aka Kosmik) concept and he asked me to help out. He's a good friend of mine from when I lived in Santa Barbara. The music format is primarily underground house/techno music. We try to emphasize playing vinyl there too. The venue is a very unique one-of-a-kind space, it looks like a haunted library or something! It can only fit like 50 people max, a very intimate space ideal for what we are trying to do. Q. To you personally, is the vinyl format important? Do you think that vinyl DJ'ing is getting more popular in LA like it certainly is over here in Europe, or is it in decline maybe? A. I enjoy the challenge of playing vinyl, but the format isn't important. The selection is more important than what you use in my view. There are some cool record stores here but I'm not sure if I'd say it's getting more popular. Sadly a few established stores have closed here in recent years but a few new ones have emerged too, however few of them specialize in dance music. Q. I noticed that you play regularly at that venue called Complex in LA and have a gig there tonight, right? A. Yea I've been getting some cool gigs there recently! I'm opening for Ital (Planet Mu) and Aurora Halal (Mutual Dreaming) tonight. I'm also playing a party at Complex on 30th April for an event called "That's Deck", opening for Stefan Ringer (NDATL, CGI Recordings), Cromie (Peach) and An Expresso (L2S Recordings) (info on that here: http://www.residentadvisor.net/news.aspx?id=28935). April's shaped up to be a busy month for sure! Q. Have you ventured into production works at all? A. Sure have, I have been experimenting with making music since I was 16 but only recently started taking it more seriously. I have just put a track out called Neopolitan on this LP that is available to download here: https://la909.bandcamp.com/album/l-a-909-friends-vol-1 Q. Thanks for the mix, the track (which is ace!) and the chat, hope tonight goes well bro! Any final words about the mix? A. Thanks! Right now I've got my decks set up in my kitchen and I recorded this mix while sipping tea and baking some tilapia. Vinyl-only. Please enjoy, thanks! Jason James, April 2015 @forceplacement ===== Full tracklist for this mix coming soon, but do feel free to ask for track ID's in the comments in the meantime.

Today's guest mix see's us get all cozy with one of our closest housemates. ‘Sixth Avenue Express'. Hailing from the peak district and based in London this producer has been flourishing this past year and has been growing a decent following as a result. Known for making emotionally delicate and subtly details productions SAE has a way with chords and vocals that is pretty rare for a producer so young. Having just released a solo EP with us called ‘I See' we thought it was a good idea to reveal a little more about this artist and what they are all about.Their mix is as we expected it to be, mid-tempo for the most part and sultry as hell. The tone is set from the get go with their choice to open with Darkside's beautiful ‘Paper Trails' and their leaning towards music with a warm soul is no better typified than with the inclusion of Candi Staton – Hallelujah Anyway (Larse Vocal) and a particular highlight for me is Terrence Pearce's beautiful Halcyon which conjures memories of ‘man with a red face' moments. It's not all calm waters however as tracks like Max Graef's Kotschleuder make sure your feet are still working. There's also a track from their latest release with us called ‘Clandestine' and another one to aptly see the mix out called ‘Goodbye' which has just come out on a limited pink vinyl. We caught up with Sixth Avenue Express to have a chin wag.

Sup Everyone Here is the 31st instalment of the Asylum Hour series. I'd like to kick things off by thanking everyone who has downloaded / streamed / shared the mixes in 2013. I recorded this session a few days after I learned about the passing of a very good friend of mine. He was the most musical person I've ever met, a singer , poet , producer, songwriter , dj , keyboard player , a major mixed bag of limitless talent. So this mix features some of the tracks I used to bounce off him , and some of the new material I wanted to play for him. I hope you'll enjoy the mix as you play it. This session has everything , deep tech , soulful house, broken beats and some nu jazz at the end. It features tracks by Be , Pablo Bolivar , Max Graef , The Sunburst Band, Detroit Swindle , Rick Wade , Hi-Tek & J Boogie's Dubtronic Science to name a few. Its sad that some stars get taken out before they get to shine , but Obakeng Ramoratha Mothoa is a man that will never be forgotten. Recently Deep House Australia engaged young Sydney DJs to enter our .darkroom DJ competition. The winning DJ was offered the chance at playing a live set at the next .darkroom event, opening for a touring international DJ, Owen Howells, plus a guest spot on The DHA Podcast! A big congratulations to Hamish Radford, who has just been named our winner! If you would like to hear Hamish Radford in action, playing live and opening for Owen Howells, get down to .darkroom in Sydney on Saturday 19th October (THIS WEEKEND!) from 2pm. Yes, it's an afternoon shindig, kicking on into the evening and late into the night, but Deep House Australia are taking over The Backroom of The Gladestone Hotel in Chippendale from 2pm in the afternoon. Don’t be late or you might miss all the action! We will also have a BBQ going, as well as the pub-food avaiblable from The Gladstone kitchen. The Gladestone is just a short 5 minute walk from Sydney's Central Station. A massive thank you to all entrants of the competition, we received a much bigger response than we could have ever imagined. Because of the sheer volume of talented mixes we received, we will also be announcing a group of runners ups over the next day or so - and will feature those mixes on our SoundCloud page. We are also hoping to engage our talented entrants for future podcasts and events on our radar, so keep an ear to the ground and watch these young talents grow. During our review of all competition entries, we rated each mix based on a number of different criteria, including: volume levels; track selection; originality; mixing; and effects. We also looked for a good structure of a mix, for example mixes with an introduction and outro, as well as use of vocals and instrumentals where appropriate. After reviewing all of these items, Hamish's mix was the standout. For now, get into Hamish's mix... Hamish Radford Tracklist 01. Motor City Drum Ensemble | L.O.V.E 02. Beaten Space Probe | You Are My Melody (Beaten Space Probe Edit) Bio Hey Deep House Australia, my name is Hamish Radford, I am 21, and I have put together a vinyl mix for the .darkroom competition. It basically consists of a bunch a records that I love and go well together, lots of Detroit/Chicago influence also there are a few vinyl-only releases in the mix. I hope you like it! Here’s a little about myself: I am 21 I live on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. At the moment my favourite artists would be Max Graef, Kid Sublime, Leon Vynhall and Nathan X to name a few. I have been DJing for about 4 and a half years. Turntableism inspired me to become a DJ, I started out just scratching and beat juggling for about a year and a half before mixing dance music. DJ's that inspired me were Mix Master Mike, Qbert, Dstyles, DJ Pump, Kid Koala etc I could go on. As for my experience as a DJ, I have played at the Burdekin a few times for an event called Significant Others which I love, also my friends ran an event for a while called Into Deep which I played for but it is not running anymore. I am a vinyl only DJ, my turntables I use at home are American Audio HTD 4.5 pretty similar to Technics 1200's. I use Ableton to produce but have not been using it for long. I am also currently studying Cert 4 Sound Technician, it's great! Here is my SouldCloud link: @dj-hamish
