654: Inauguration Consternation & Respecting Refugees with Matthew Soerens

The Holy Post

The first week of the second Trump administration has seen refugees cut off and January 6th criminals cut loose. Franklin Graham declared in his inauguration prayer that God himself had chosen the President. The MAGA faithful applauded this mix of Christian faith and politics, but when Bishop Budde asked the President to “show mercy” to frightened people during her homily at the National Cathedral, she was accused of everything from political activism to witchcraft. Phil has a theory about what these two religious leaders at the inauguration reveal about the state of American Christianity. Then Matthew Soerens from World Relief is back to discuss Trump's immediate shut down of all refugee resettlement, including cutting all financial aid previously promised to refugees already in the U.S. What's behind the President's aggressive policy, and how can we practically help our neighbors abandoned by the government that brought them here? Also this week—reanimated squirrels and Skye wears a red hat.   0:00 - Show Starts   4:14 - Theme Song   4:36  - Sponsor - Go to https://www.fromourplace.com and use code HOLYPOST to get 10% off site wide on beautiful cookware!   5:42 - Sponsor - Faithful Counseling - This episode is sponsored by Faithful Counseling. Mandy Anderson is a mother, a wife, and a photographer with great talent and great anxiety. So when she was asked to participate in The Woman of the Universe pageant as Mrs. USA, she did not jump at the invitation. Soon after, however, she realized how the platform could help her spread awareness about causes she cares about, including welcoming refugees. Now, as Mrs. USA 2023-2024, not only does she advocate for refugees with The Welcome Corps and Utah Valley Refugees, but she has also had the opportunity to discuss her own mental health struggles. In this first part of a two-part series, Mandy shares how seeking compassion for ourselves and others can make a world of difference. Mandy Anderson was hesitant when invited to participate in the Woman of the Universe  pageant as Mrs. USA  Even though we live in challenging times, we can become ‘Relentlessly Resilient’ as we lean on and learn from one another’s experiences. Hosts Jennie Taylor and Michelle Scharf are no strangers to overcoming adversity; Michelle lost her husband to cancer, while Jennie’s husband, Major Brent Taylor, was killed in the service of our country. Their stories bond them together, and now listeners can join them weekly as they visit with others enduring challenges and who teach us how they are exercising resiliency, finding value in their grief, and purpose in moving forward.  Presented by Minky Couture, makers of the most luxurious and soft blankets with a mission to share comfort and love during the special moments of life. According to the UN Refugee Agency, more than 100 million people were forcibly displaced in 2022. With Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, Europe has seen the biggest refugee crisis since the Second World War with more than 6 million people fleeing Ukraine. This is a big challenge for refugee protection and reception systems. Clearly something public services cannot stem on their own. This is where the social and solidarity economy steps in and steps up to both support governments and fill gaps and public support. This podcast discusses how the social and solidarity economy can fast track the labour-market integration of refugees and migrants. She has influenced both British popular culture and politics through the strength of her work.Breaking rules of the conventions of the fashion industry, there was always something new and exciting going on when Lynne and Katharine worked together. At a time when she was the most copied fashion designer of the time, she decided to create t-shirts with large type slogans like the now famous “ Choose Life” t-shirt, hoping that the messages would be spread far and wide.“Make the words so big you can't not see them from a distance. Then when you read them, you've had it. The words are inside your brain, and you've got no defences.” Katharine HamnettListen as they discuss the origins of the now famous slogan t-shirts, her confrontation with Margaret Thatcher, her work championing the organic cotton trade, and her recent work with Help Refugees and We Are The Future. To learn more about Katharine Hamnett for the UN Global Goals go here where you can also watch the music video. To learn more about Katharine Hamnett you can do so here. If you'd like to design your own message t-shirt, do send me your slogan at info@lynnefranks.com. Pressures on the global humanitarian protection system have only worsened as the Afghan and Ukrainian refugee crises come on top of longstanding displacement from Syria, Venezuela, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Myanmar, and other countries. These crises have given new urgency to finding ways to connect displaced peoples with opportunities to find safety and resume their lives. The use of complementary pathways, such as existing work and study visa channels, has been touted by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and others as an option running alongside traditional avenues such as asylum and refugee resettlement. But how can humanitarian migrants with skills and experience potentially use existing work or study pathways to fill labor market needs in destination countries? In this episode, MPI's Susan Fratzke speaks with Betsy Fisher, U.S. Director of the nonprofit Talent Beyond Boundaries, about complementary pathways. Guest: Mary Kaech | Bob Moffitt interviews Mary Kaech of Phoenix Refugee Connections.  "Between 2010 and 2020 the number of forcibly displaced people doubled", says Mary Kaech.  "When people arrive here legally, they have to hit the ground running. They have to be economically self sufficient in about 3 months.  We prioritize people based on humanitarian need; people who are disabled, widows and orphans, elders who've never been to school and can't read and write in their own language." Mary says, "Everyone who comes here as a refugee has experienced extreme trauma and loss. About 44% of refugees are survivors of torture, and all of them have lost family members. When they come here, they're carrying that trauma with them; usually they don't know anyone when they arrive here, and usually they don't speak the language."  Mary says, "This is a place where the church can come alongside the people and get to know them personally to live into their gifts and calling."  Mary states, "We do see unusual upward mobility economically among refugees." Mary continues with giving examples of how the church helps with the two main factors that contribute to peoples flourishing, "If they have a working grasp of English, and if they have a trusted friend that can help them navigate the American system -- and can help refugees along the way."  https://www.phxrc.org/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

She started This is About Humanity with her friends Elsa Collins and Yolanda Walther-Meade, to help people at the border. Location: Bedford Date: Tuesday, 17th March Project: Myjam Role: CEO In 2011, growing levels of unrest over lack of employment, political freedom and high levels of corruption in Syria led to a small number of pro-democracy demonstrations. Inspired by the ongoing Arab Spring revolution in nearby countries, the movement began gaining traction within Syria. The Syrian government retaliated with deadly force, leading to widespread calls for the president Bashar al-Assad to resign. Disdain for the government grew, and with it, the government's attempts at suppression intensified, escalating into a civil war that has now gripped the country for over nine years. It is no longer a case of for/against Assad as numerous groups and nations have been dragged into the conflict.  The Syrian civil war is the second most deadly in the 21st century and has displaced millions. The total number of Syrian refugees is predicted to be over nine million with many heading to Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon and Egypt, with many migrating through Europe. For the people of Syria, Bitcoin offers enormous advantages over cash. Within Syria, a large percentage of the population does not have access to banking services, and the Syrian Lira suffers from high inflation. For refugees, there is a risk of theft and confiscation as they make their way to new countries. Once settled, Bitcoin is also a perfect tool for remittances to their families back in Syria. In this interview, I talk to Moe Ghashim, a Syrian Bitcoiner now living in the UK. We discuss the ongoing civil war in Syria, the devastating physical and economic damage to the country, and how Bitcoin is a perfect tool to help refugees.

Today is World Refugee Day. The United Nations wants you to consider the plight of refugees and sign a petition to "stand with" them.  On the other hand, the US State Department wants the president to launch military strikes against Syria.  Apparently 3 million Syrian refugees (and 6.6 million displaced) aren't enough. Also: With refugees come six diseases that had been nearly wiped out in the US; FBI released edited transcript of Omar Mateen's 911 call; Senate votes to require women to register for the draft; full moon lands on summer solstice for first time since 1967; Noah's Ark replica nearly sinks; and man dies after watching new horror film -- and then his body disappears along with the man transporting it.
