In this collaboration episode of Poducer with NSW, we sit down with UK producer HIJINX (formerly known as Mr. K) — an artist who's evolved from heavyweight dubstep roots into a boundary-pushing sound that blends groove, texture, and raw energy. From his beginnings in Essex and early raves at Brixton Academy to releasing on respected labels like 1985 Music, White Peach, and his own imprint Fortune, HIJINX opens up about the creative reinvention that's carried him through two distinct eras of his career. We dive into his transition from Mr. K to HIJINX, his shifting production style, and why he's more interested in originality and groove than chasing trends. Along the way, he reflects on collaboration, the challenges of staying inspired in dubstep, and the crossover influences of metal, skate culture, and techno in his music. HIJINX also shares candid thoughts on the music industry — from the realities of releasing on major labels to the freedom of running his own platform, and what true success looks like outside of metrics.
The past 3 decades have brought their share of ups and downs for Feeder. They've enjoyed 11 top ten albums, and various hit singles, but had to weather the tragic loss of drummer Jon Lee in January 2002. It was against this backdrop that frontman Grant Nicholas returned to studio alongside bassist Taka Hirose to produce Feeder's most poignant and life-affirming album “Comfort In Sound”. The album is getting reissue this month, and they will be undertaking a UK tour, playing the album in full for the first time. It's a rare look back for the band, who have released 4 new albums in the last decade including a double album “Black/Red” which came out last year. Grant was a guest on the podcast a few years back, and I'm really grateful he was willing to come back on. Instagram: @sendingsignalspodcast

A Sauna Talk from the British Sauna Summit, Tuesday, 20 May 2025 Hilton London Canary Wharf. Last year, Sauna Summit 2024 and 1.0, about 120 of us gathered rooftop at in Hackney. The spirit was both well organized like a conference, and yet intimate like a family gathering. This year, as attendance swelled to well north of 300, the Hilton Hotel ballroom provided a backdrop and familiarity of a “proper” (to use the British word) organized meeting. This is the evolution of sauna. What started as a somewhat jest and jovial organisation, like the growth of many things sauna, the British Sauna Society has ballooned into a structured membership of several hundred, representing the “saunapreneurs” of public saunas that dot the map of the UK's shoreline, streams, and urban communities. Yours truly was given the honour of announcing the winners of the second annual Sauna Summit Awards, which showcases outstanding saunas (Best Urban, Best Community, Best New, etc.). All of the contest participants are winners. And though there's surely pride and competition behind the curtain, yet what is displayed in the UK sauna scene is more collaboration and support. The Brits seem to recognize that the rising sauna tide lifts all public sauna boats. London Calling I am reminded of my time living in London. It was decades ago, and I had the dream job of music listings editor at Time Out magazine, where i'd have one on one relationship with the music venues (Dingwalls, Brixton Academy, etc.) and what stood out was the pricing structure of concert tickets. General admission at the top, then the list of discounted tickets (senior, student, unemployed, single parent, counsel estate resident, library card holder, etc.). It's ingrained in British culture to proudly support those underserved. And sauna culture today shares that “community support” ethos. America may face headwinds in this regard, being more capitalistic centric, yet Britain waves the flag of “serving their community” as evidence by the hundreds of saunas dotting their shoreline and beyond. Anyhow, in this episode we get to hear one on one conversations with folks from Harvia, Jake Newport from Finnmark, kindred spirit author Lassi Liikkanen, key Summit organizer Mark Lamb, his wife and author Emma O'kelly, Sauna from Finland Carita, Rob De Bank, and other folks “behind the scenes” and “between the action.” Notes from presentations at the British Sauna Summit: Carita 1. Take as long as you like in sauna. Listen to your body. 2. Nudity is common in private saunas. Often ladies and men's sides. 3. Most Finn's prefer 70-80c and we make löyly. 4. Good for your skin and circulation. Every sauna has its own soul. Löyly is the main thing. Dr emelia Vuitisalmi “Sauna is the one single place where we truly feel safe and we can relax.” Finns don't count minutes or measure temperature. Sauna stimulates three hormones 1. Dopamine. What gigs do you wish you had gone to? It might be gig that you could have gone to, but couldn't be arsed, or it could be a gig that requires a time machine. The very last thing an artist or a promoter or owner of a venue wants is for someone to get hurt—or worse--at a concert…but it does happen… There are always stories about bad behaviour or unexpected crowd dynamics… Altamont in 1969, The Who crowd crush in 1979, Woodstock 99, the nine dead during Pearl Jam's set at the Roskilde Festival in 2000, the deaths at the Astroworld Festival in 2021, and the Brixton Academy crowd crush in 2023 all come to mind… Those were security failures and problems with crowd control…but occasionally, there's a different type of disaster, the kind that happens suddenly and without warning… When you go to a show, you expect that the building and everything in it will be safe, that all has been constructed to proper standards, and won't present any kind of danger to anyone at the gig… The last thing you think about is the stage coming down on top of the performers, the crew, and the crowd… Saturday, June 12, 2012, at Downsview Park in Toronto was a clear, calm summer day. But just minutes before the grounds were to open for fans, thousands of pounds of equipment and scaffolding suddenly came crashing down…one person died and three people were injured… What happened?...and why did it take so long for justice to be served?...and while we're at it, was justice served? I'm Alan Cross and this is “Uncharted: Crime and Mayhem the Music Industry, episode 16”…the Radiohead stage collapse…have I got a story for you… Learn more about your ad choices. Oh boy... What have we done to ourselves? In a moment of uncertainty we decided to double dip into the Winterbottom well. We knew we were going to review this film "at some point" BUT we didn't really know what we were letting ourselves in for. The "arthouse/mainstream/romantic/concert film" is only 69 (lol) minutes long but it feels like it's relatively short runtime. A film that depicts heavily gratuitous un-simulated sexual acts performed by our lead couple, some scenes depicting our lead character's job as a glaciologist (!) and 9 (counted and confirmed) songs of musical acts of the time performing at Brixton Academy in London. If you thought that it would add up to the sum total of "nothing" you'd be close. If you thought it was a bit of a shallow, uncomfortable experiment that doesn't really justify its needs and the pressure put on its performers, you may also be right. If you think its a bit pretentious, you'd also be on the right track. See what we have to say in one of our personal favourite breakdowns of a film we've done in a while.

Barbra Streisand [00:20] "The Christmas Song" Seasons Greetings from Barbra Streisand... and Friends Columbia Special Products CSS 1075 1969 Babs takes things in a particularly saccharine direction, but I suppose not every version can be the Nat King Cole Trio. Rockpile [04:25] "Heart" Seconds of Pleasure Columbia JC 36886 1980 The iconic album from the band that until this point has backed solo efforts from Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds knock it out of the park on their only release as Rockpile. Guitarist Billy Bremnar steps up to take the lead vocals on this snappy number. Pavement [07:00] "Frontwards" The Secret History, Volume 1 (1990-1992) Matador OLE-1064-1 2015 A compilation from a few years ago of early Pavement material. This one is a live version of one of my favorite Pavement songs, performed at Brixton Academy in London on December 14, 1992. Years later Los Campesinos! would win my musical heart with their version of this song (https://youtu.be/DnEa4ES7ep4?si=WeB_oCdOz73gNL0E). The Fresh & Onlys [10:21] "Do You Believe in Destiny" Secrets Walls Sacred Bones Records SBR-056 2011 Always love that big spacey sound Wymond Miles brings with his guitar. Peter Gabriel [14:53] "Shock the Monkey" Security Geffen Records XGHS 2011 1982 If you ask Peter Gabriel what this album is titled, he will likely say "Peter Gabriel", like his previous 3 solo efforts. If you ask Geffen Records what this album is called, they will say "Security". The more you know. The Seeds [20:16] "Can't Seem to Make You Mine" The Seeds GNP Crescendo GNP 2023 1966 A top notch side 1, track 1 from these garage rock progenitors featuring the one and only Sky Saxon (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQWVHvjdfZw). Luna [38:57] "(Walkin' Thru' the) Sleepy City" A Sentimental Education Double Feature Records LP-DBL-0013 2017 A fine collection of covers from one of my favorite bands. This Jagger/Richards number orignally appeared on the Stones compilation album Metamorphosis (https://youtu.be/fRDtVsAvM-8?si=wyGkrescNCIU4vWd). Well hello pod fans, here's another beautiful chat about the greatest thing in all our lives, music. This time we have a true DJ legend, the incredible DJ Food is in the house. DJ Food aka Strictly Kev has been making breaks beats and visual treats for over 30 years now. His work with Ninja Tunes in the 90s brought so much joy and helped establish the label as one of the UK's most important imprints. Kev was Trip-Hop before it had the name, he was a pioneer of audio visual effects, supported the Beastie Boys at Brixton Academy and remixed Matt Johnson's The The with the kind of deft touch that few could match. Not only that he was genuinely one of the nicest people we have had on the show and even came over a night out! I think you are going to love this interview. Before all that though we are going to discuss bawdy women with Judith Owen, Judith is an incredible blues singer who has a new LP out celebrating the pioneering women of the the blues who laid the foundation for the likes of Megan Thee Stallion and Lil Kim long before women could even vote! At the top of the show Deb and Eamon discuss the their T-Shirt game and ask why men are so annoying. That's What Goes Around this week and we hope you love it!BIG thanks to @Marke23 for hooking us up. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Do you like to Boogie Woogie? Because your Right Back At Ya! boys are covering the Queen of Pop for the first time, so grab that pink cowboy hat and tiara - and let's get to it! With The Celebration Tour going full throttle now (and yes we will give our thoughts on it!), it feels like the perfect moment to dive into Madonna's 2000 album "Music". Joel and David dive into this monumental album, including the singles and music videos, and relive Madonna's Brixton Academy gig which was impressively instantly live streamed to a global audience on the world wide web! *insert dial-up modem tone* The "Music" era was a massive turning point for her Madgesty both creatively and personally. It's a new millennium, new experimental body of work with a new collaborator (Mirwais) and, it also marks Madonna's first album made exclusively in Europe. The avant-garde French house and electronica influences mixed with warm acoustic guitars, acid techno and folk influences brought us big commercial hits like 'Music', 'Don't Tell Me' and 'What It Feels Like For A Girl'; but also wild dance tracks like 'Impressive Instant' and 'Runaway Lover'. Despite the European influences, visually she gave us one of her most memorable signature looks with the camp, country Western aesthetic. There is so much to unpack together! If you're liking us doing Madonna, let us know in the comments. Does anybody really know the secret, or the combination for this pod and where they keep it? This week Ivo and Alex took old nu metalhead and chiselled singer-unmasker Joel Dommett to seek out these answers at Wembley Arena (formerly Brixton Academy). It was Limp Bizkit's way or the highway, and sure, Alex chose the highway (the metropolitan line), but not before a solid hour and a half of doing it all for the nookie. Kenny and Mark break apart the charging third song on Music and what it truly means to be a “runaway lover.” Willam Orbit is back and stepping up his game, Mark cashes in all of those IOUs, and Kenny's narrative takes a downward twist. Karma is a nasty mistress y'all, but we have that live version from the Brixton Academy to help us lick our wounds. “Come on London!"
Matt Cornish- Thatcher on Acid - in conversation with David Eastaugh Thatcher on Acid were an English anarcho-punk band. They formed in Somerset during 1983. Their name is a satirical reference to former UK prime minister Margaret Thatcher. Ben Corrigan, Bob Butler and Andy Tuck also played in Schwartzeneggar with ex-Crassmember, Steve Ignorant. The band opened the anarcho-punk band Conflict's "Gathering of the 5000" show at Brixton Academy, an event which resulted in many arrests and achieved a degree of infamy.
Waterparks' frontman Awsten Knight chats with us as the band head out on Sad Summer Fest in the US. He tells us about writing the recent singles 'Funeral Grey' and 'Self-Sabotage' and tells us what to expect from the band's upcoming fifth album, including new song 'Brainwashed' and some exciting collaborations. Plus, we talk signing to Fueled By Ramen, their recent show at London's Brixton Academy and the inclusion of 'Telephone' in Netflix's 'Heartstopper' series.
Welcome back to Riot Act, your weekly dose of music reviews, chat and gossip. This week Steve and Remfry take a listen to brand new music from Porcupine Tree, Alexisonfire, Nervus and Zola Jesus, before getting a mixture of excited and not at all bothered by news of a full tour by the original line up of the Sugababes and a documentary about Motley Crue's Vince Neil. Then we turn our attention to Nine Inch Nails, who recently completed a full tour of the UK which included a stop at London's Brixton Academy that Steve saw, but also both of our hosts saw their two night stint at the very aesthetically pleasing Eden Project in Cornwall. Both of the events were completely different in many ways, and we discuss them all, before music about other venues across the world that are as delightful to look at as the massive orb filled greenhouse that we spent the weekend in. That should be enough to satisfy you, right? No? Want more? Okay, some people were arrested for partying in a pig pen in a place called Methwold in Suffolk. You're very welcome. Although he may not be a young one anymore he has continued to carve out a glittering career in show business starring in several west end musicals, TV shows and earning himself a reputation as a successful author and songwriter. Hailing from Leicester, England, Easy Life are a fresh young band that flies the flag of genre-bending in a profoundly beautiful way. The evidence was clear across their first single, Pockets, which is this euphoric dance of instruments that meld in a way you wouldn't expect. That ability to fuse sounds in a fun way is contrasted by the lyrics of frontman, Murray Matravers, who doesn't shy away from depicting the nuances of mental health struggles that so many people can relate to. On today's podcast, I chat with Murray about actualizing their debut album (Life's A Beach), along with bringing Maroon 5 to award shows, headlining Brixton Academy, and what it was actually like to progress as a band during a global pandemic. Easy Life will be touring the states starting on April 8th at The Foundry in Philadelphia. Full tour dates can be found at https://www.easylifemusic.com/live/, don't miss out!
It's another stacked week here at Riot Act Towers. Steve and Remfry have been busying themselves with a whole host of things; watching Gang Of Youths blow the roof off at Brixton Academy, reviewing new albums from Cypress Hill, Feeder and Gloson, chewing the fat over news about Dolly Parton, The Rolling Stones and Jack White and picking one fantastic soundtrack each from a terrible movie. Yes, while The Crow: City of Angels and Batman Forever were both pretty crud, the soundtrack that accompanied them were both full of some of our favourite artists doing some legit bangers. Korn, Nick Cave, Deftones, Sunny Day Real Estate, Massive Attack, U2, Hole, White Zombie, Bush, Filter, Method Man, Seal and PJ Harvey (twice) are just some of the artists featured over these two corking soundtracks. It was a sheer delight to welcome actor and musician, Max Beesley onto The Paul Weller Fan Podcast. What a talent! - piano, vibes, drums and percussion - song-writing - production - and a successful TV & movie acting career to boot!. The Paul Weller Movement kicks off... Even though he was just 18 at the time, Max played a key part in those early days of Paul's solo career with The Paul Weller Movement. He performed live as part of the band across the UK and Europe in 1990/91. Surely I'm not the only one who managed to wear out a VHS copy of the Brixton Academy show because I played it so often?!. I've posted a link to that gig below as it's so very special to me - amazing songs and performances all round. Funky as hell too!. It was recorded on 20th April 1991, a whole year before Paul's first solo album was released in Japan (18 months in the UK). The gig features Steve White on drums, Jacko Peake on saxophone and flute, Henry Thomas on bass and Max Beesley on keys and vibes. Into Tomorrow, Kosmos & playing on the Wild Wood LP Cast your mind back to 6th May 1991. The first solo single… Into Tomorrow was released - and Paul was back!. Recorded at Solid Bond in February, this absolute banger has Weller on vocals, bass, guitars and percussion. Steve White is on drums, Dr. Robert (The Blow Monkeys) on guitar (and BV) with Max on the organ. He also mentions on the podcast about recording Kosmos during that session too. Next time you are digging in to your Weller albums - check out Wild Wood to hear Max performing extra vocals with Marco Nelson on Has My Fire Really Gone Out? and playing wurlitzer on Moon on Your Pyjamas (a song that Paul wrote for his eldest son, Nat). New Music - Song for Sabrina + Omar + Weller Solo? As you'll hear during our chat, Max has been working with Paul again in recent years. We hear about a very special collaboration called Song for Sabrina on his own soon-to-be-released solo album - The Groove Spectrum, working with his old Guildhall mate (and previous podcast guest) Omar in Paul's studio for his new LP and even recording some late night grooves with Paul at Black Barn that will hopefully turn up in the future. What a Roll Call... As a session musician, Max played, toured or recorded with the likes of Incognito, Jamiroquai, Robbie Williams, Omar, Brand New Heavies, George Benson, Stevie Wonder, The JB's and Zero7. As an actor, he has starred in many hugely successful TV series - The History of Tom Jones, Bodies, Hotel Babylon, Mad Dogs, Jamestown and The Outsider. In 2022, you'll be able to see Max starring alongside Keeley Hawes in Sky TV sci-fi thriller The Midwich Cuckoos and in Guy Ritchie's new movie Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre with Hugh Grant, Jason Statham, Aubrey Plaza and Josh Hartnett. Spoiler alert, you can also see Max on screen during the Paul Weller video On Sunset - with a little cameo appearance at the end on the promo film. In the late 80s, the British group Bros was one of the most successful pop acts in the world. Made up of lead singer Matt Goss, his twin brother Luke, and childhood friend Craig Logan, Bros quickly achieved multi-platinum selling albums and legions of adoring fans. But behind the scenes not everything was as it seemed. By 1992 the band had collapsed, and the relationship between the brothers never fully recovered. Matt tells Mobeen Azhar how the split affected his mental health, and how he eventually made his way back to music. His new album is called The Beautiful Unknown. What if I told you that throughout 2020-2021, there was a band that safety played stadium shows while we were all locked in our homes? You'd probably ask “was this was in New Zealand?” and I'd reply with “Yes, duh” but the important bit is the band at the center of that; Six60. They're homegrown heroes who've ascended to stadium status by writing authentic songs that have won the hearts of people worldwide. To be a Six60 fan is to feel as though you're part of a loving tribe that's got your back. That sense of whānau (family in māori) means everything to the band and on today's podcast, I chat with frontman Matiu Walters to figure out why. If you're listening in the UK and Europe, you'll be able to catch Six60 live in a few week's time. Their tour kicks off in Paris on November 18th and they'll be in that part of the world up to December 4th when the tour ends with a massive show at Brixton Academy in London. Don't miss out!
