The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

For saxophonist Ben Wendel, the pandemic provided the space for him to develop his latest solo record, All One (Edition Records), a project that is both very solitary and very collaborative. It features a woodwind choir of saxophones and bassoons performed entirely by Ben, and then joined by special guests like singers Cecile McLorin Salvant and Jose James, guitarist Bill Frisell, and trumpeter Terence Blanchard.  Wendel is no stranger to experimentation or to collaboration. As a member of the genre bending group Kneebody, he has always had one foot in contemporary music. And previous solo projects were motivated by his desire to collaborate, like The Seasons which found him composing 12 original pieces dedicated to 12 musicians he admired and then performed with those musicians.  Wendel performed at the Village Vanguard in New York earlier this spring. He was joined by his longtime friend and musical partner, drummer Nate Wood, Harish Raghavan on bass, Gilad Hekselman & Nir Felder on guitar (they split the week between them) and Larry Goldings on piano.  We spoke that week about playing in that sacred space, his desire to connect and to belong, his ongoing negotiation with technology, and how his personal experience during the pandemic influenced his music. Plus, learning the ineffable wisdom of his elders in the music. www.third-story.com https://www.wbgo.org/podcast/the-third-story www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast

But throughout his career, he's been involving in so many projects including Kneebody, Wayne Krantz, George Harrison, Tigran Hamasyan, Louis Cole, Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders, Sting…incredible. It was truly and honor talking to him and I hope you enjoy the 5 records that shaped Nate Wood in the musician he is today. Cheers!  As promised...check out the video of Marcus Gilmore HERE. Greg brings us a hilarious (and quite popular) post from McSweeney's titled “What Your Favorite Sad Dad Band Says About You” & it's a fun read! We visit some of our favorites and take turns picking the closest Sad Dad Band & corresponding description appropriate for each other.Song: Lenny Breau - “The Claw”Jay has noticed, over the years, that the year 1972 seemed particularly prolific for music. An article in the San Diego Union Tribune (“Is 1972 the best year ever for great albums?”) validated this hunch. So he posed the question “What's the best year ever for great albums?” and we had ourselves a debate! Greg brings a strong case for 1991 & Nick devised a methodology that led him to 1970. Born and raised in Armenia, with a dream of becoming a thrash metal guitarist, Tigran took to the piano at a very young age & his family relocated to California in his teenage years so that he'd have the best opportunity at reaching his potential. In this interview, keyboardist and composer, Steve Hunt talks about his upcoming release entitled CONNECTIONS. This new album features an allstar lineup of musicians, including Jimmy Haslip, Chad Wackerman, Gary Husband, Vinnie Colauita, Virgil Donati, Nate Wood, Evan Marien, Jimmy Johnson, Eric Marienthal, Billy Cobham, and many others. We also talked about his work with Allan Holdsworth, Stanley Clarke, Billy Cobham, and others. Pianist Steve Hunt, throughout his career, has stayed true to an uncompromising vision of composing and performing jazz music from his heart. Steve has continued to push himself technically, focusing on a musical style which is both challenging and meaningful... Steve credits jazz greats Keith Jarrett, Joe Zawinul, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, and Thelonius Monk as strong influences to his jazz style. During his formative years he studied with concert pianist Albert Hirsh, and jazz pianists Sid Davis and Lyle Mays who all helped form his lighting fast technique and unique style. Steve later attended Berklee College of Music in Boston where he continued his study of jazz. After recording and performing with top Boston jazz musicians such as Randy Roos and Tiger Okoshi, and leading his own jazz fusion band, Steve spent the next ten years on the road with several renowned jazz artists such as Billy Cobham, Stanley Clarke, Angela Bofill, Tom Brown, and Allan Holdsworth. Steve's international touring took him to countries such as Japan, Israel, Austria, France, England, Italy, Sweden, Argentina, and Australia, as well as major cities in the US and Canada. During this time, Steve also served as musical director for the famous touring Jazz Explosion where he led the trio which headlined artists Freddy Hubbard, Gato Barbaira, Stanley Turentine, Ramsey Lewis, violinist Noel Pointer, Kenny G, and the late Phillis Hyman. The Jazz Explosion performed in major concert venues including the Circle Star in San Francisco, Beacon Theater in New York, Universal Theater in Los Angeles, and Hammersmith Odium in London. Steve's desire towards challenging himself is no where more evident than with his long time association with Allan Holdsworth, whose progressive and innovative style has helped Steve to further his own musical development. Holdsworths more recent CD releases including Secrets, Wardencliff Tower, and Hard Hat Area, as well as featuring Steve on keyboards, also include Steves original tunes "Maid Marion," "Joshua," and "Dodgy Boat." While touring with Holdsworth, Steve was featured in the Japanese edition of Keyboard Magazine (July 1991 and March 1993). Other noteworthy recording contributions by Steve include two of Stanley Clarkes CD releases If This Bass Could Only Talk and East River Drive. Steve reached a major milestone, producing his solo jazz CD From Your Heart and Your Soul (BMI). For the promotional release tour of his new CD, Steve organized a quintet including Gregg Bendian, John Lockwood, Ole Mathisen, and Bruce Bartlett.

The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

There are times when the right song reaches us at the right time. Sometimes it’s a brand new song. Sometimes it’s a classic. Sometimes it’s something you’ve heard a hundred times before but the stars align just right, and you hear it with fresh ears. Other times, it’s like a bolt of lightning out of nowhere. During these recent Covid months, the song “Things” by Louis Cole has been one of those for me that just makes sense.  Louis is a prolific multi instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, arranger, video maker, surrealist, funk monkey, producer and personality. Despite his extensive output as a solo artist, with his band Knower, and as a guest with others, he is slightly reclusive and still somewhat of a mystery.  After more than three years of attempting to set this up, Louis and I spoke recently to talk about where he came from, what he’s doing now, and where he hopes to go. Along the way he touched on writing “nostalgic music that feels almost like a memory of something that never happened”, overcoming fear, being a better person, staying up late into the weird part of the night, “insanity music”, money, honesty, humor, the problem with 100bpm, YouTubePoops, and what Nate Wood, David Binney, Bob Mintzer, and Jack Conte have to do with any of this. www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast https://louiscole.bandcamp.com/

The 31st release on PJCE Records is “Escape Route,” by Other Barry, a bionic power trio led by George Colligan on keyboards, with Micah Hummel on drums and Enzo Irace on guitar. Transcript: [Doug] PJCE Records artists Other Barry, a trio led by George Colligan, play at 2:50 pm, Saturday August 18th at the 2018 Montavilla Jazz Festival in Northeast Portland. Tickets available at montavillajazzfest.com, and you buy or stream the album at pjce.bandcamp.com. Here’s the episode. Welcome to Beyond Category, I’m Douglas Detrick. The 31st release on PJCE Records is “Escape Route,” by Other Barry, a bionic power trio led by George Colligan on keyboards, with Micah Hummel on drums and Enzo Irace on guitar. The music is adrenaline-drenched, electronica-infused, jazz music that doesn’t mind being a bit complicated, even nerdy in its complexity. Picture Superman in beast mode, alternating between a dapper Clark Kent sipping a latte while he scrolls through his Instagram feed, and maybe that gives you an idea. [Music: Thing 3] The energy of the album starts at ten, and goes to eleven more than a few times, but not without entering some ethereal, fragile spaces. [Music: Pad] [George Colligan] I’m George Colligan and I played keyboards on the record. [Micah Hummel] I’m Micah Hummel and I played drums. [Doug] George Colligan, the veteran of this trio by at least a few decades, picked two of his students who share an interest in this aesthetic approach, and who were ready for a challenge. There’s a long tradition of a more experienced bandleader hiring young players. The iconic drummer Art Blakey came to mind for George. [George] Art Blakey always wanted quality musicians, but at a certain point he went for young musicians, just like Betty Carter would go for young musicians. There’s different reasons for that...you can pay them less. But also to have the mentor/mentee relationship. [Doug] That kind of relationship was important to Micah Hummel. [Micah] George is basically why I moved here. Musically he’s just very inspiring, and open minded, willing to let me contribute to the conversation on the band stand. [Doug] There are different reasons for an established older musician to work with younger players. It could include real opportunities for the youngsters to give input, or it could just be about having someone to obey commands. Allowing for an equal exchange of ideas was critical to the formation of this band and this album. [Music Thing 5] [George] I want it to be open to interpretation. I don’t like to overthink it or overexplain it. And this ties into the teaching part of it. I would say that I’m teaching by giving an opportunity to these young musicians to find the interpretation by themselves, you know what I mean, rather than by saying this is exactly what you should do. [George] Here’s the thing generally about this project, is that there is a set component, but I always like to find that balance between written and spontaneity. Even though some of it is more quote unquote groove based, there’s still that spirit of interaction. [Micah] One of my favorite drummers is Lewis Cole from Knower, and obviously Mark Guiliana and Nate Wood. What I love about them is that they can emulate machines in such a natural way. And I love that, but it can also be very restricting. I feel like this project and this group allows me to do the best of both worlds. Almost exactly like George was saying about pre-planning and spontaneity. I can have an idea of what I want to do, but there’s a lot of flexibility and I don’t have to be tied down. [Doug] The last tune on the album, Revenge, is a rhythmic tour de force. Micah thought it showed the precision they achieved as a group. He thought... [Micah] ...it would fall apart if everybody wasn’t on the same page and if there wasn’t that precise element about it. [Doug] The last tune on the album, Revenge, is a rhythmic tour de force. Micah thought it showed the precision they achieved as a group. He thought... [Micah] ...it would fall apart if everybody wasn’t on the same page and if there wasn’t that precise element about it. [Doug] Finding musicians who can perform well in that environment can be a challenge no matter how experienced they are. George Colligan had more to say about Micah Hummel and Enzo Irace. Both young players have great technique, but there’s more to it than that. [George] It’s about how to play with some maturity, how to develop a sense of taste, how to not play sometimes, when to leave stuff out. And I think Enzo has a lot of that instinctually. When I watch him play I get the same feeling as I do from older guys, they have a thoughtfulness about what they play, it’s not just a million notes. [Music: Intro to Thing 5] [George] I think Micah really brought this balance that we were talking about before. A project like this won’t work if it’s all about precision, and it also won’t work it it’s totally organic, so there has to be that balance. Micah has his own grooves. I’m hearing other drummers in town imitate them, so that’s a good sign for Micah, that he’s already become a local icon for certain types of grooves. There was a young guy at PSU and I was like ‘that’s some Micah Hummel stuff you’re playing.’ [Doug] The mentorship between George and Micah has been fruitful, but it almost didn’t happen. [George] When somebody really good auditions, you remember that. He had a really great audition and we were like ‘we need to get this guy here.’ It was a finance issue and he didn’t end up coming. Then a few years went by and ran into this trumpet player named Noah Simpson, at the Reno Jazz Festival, and Noah was like “I’m from Arizona,” and I said “there was this drummer who auditioned for us a few years ago. What was his name?” and Noah said “Micah Hummel?” and I said “yeah, what happened to him?” And he said “he’s just chillin’, he didn’t end up going to college.” And I was like “get him on the phone.” [Doug] The record comes out July 20th, 2018. Raised and educated in Los Angeles, he joined the band Kneebody in 2001 (along with former Third Story guest Ben Wendel).  Eventually Nate moved to New York where he has been a fixture on the scene for years, working as both drummer and bassist for the likes of Donny McCaslin and Wayne Krantz. In fact, it was Nate’s love of the music Krantz was making that helped to motivate him to move east.  Nate is an extraordinarily gifted, natural musician. Although in recent years he has started to gain notoriety among musicians and hardcore fans, he’s still (in my opinion) greatly underappreciated, particularly as a drummer. But that’s starting to change now, in part due to his new project “Four” which features Nate playing drums, bass, keyboards and singing simultaneously.  Here he talks about why screwing around is so important to creativity, what’s so special about 83bpm as a tempo, what ever happened to swing, and that ongoing Third Story question: should I move to LA? Because he’s so multifaceted, this interview is filled with Nate saying “but that’s a whole other conversation….”  The episode features a short introduction from me and Nate’s old pal, pianist Randy Ingram. It’s a great one. Enjoy.  Thanks for listening. If you enjoy it, please leave a review on iTunes and consider supporting the podcast on Patreon!

You know you've entered Gabriel Delicious Country when you hear his irreverent lyrics that scream to be rewinded and eight songs with more hooks than a tackle box. The LA-based singer/multi-instrumentalist's new album, I'm Wigging Out But I Feel Patient, is nearly 25 minutes of punk-wave gilded with Gabriel's talk-singing. It makes one wish that he'll quit his "day job" as a sound engineer ASAP, so we won't have to wait for the follow-up. On this week's Fretboard Journal Podcast, we talk to luthier Nate Wood, out of Springfield, Oregon. Nate regaled us with guitarmaking tales at last month's La Conner Guitar Festival so we quickly hatched a plan to bring him on the show. Before launching his own guitar and guitar repair business (Stahman Guitars), Nate went to school at Roberto Venn and then honed his chops working for Ryan Thorell. His own inventive guitars are inspired by some of the funkier American guitar designs of the ‘50s and ‘60s. Nate is also a big fan of using reclaimed woods and eco-friendly materials.  This episode is brought to you by Retrofret Vintage Guitars.

In addition to being a singer-songwriter, Bryan Wade has created a practice to help musicians deal with anxiety called the Connected Musician or as Bryan explains: the intersection between music and mindfulness. Some musicians are at a loss for words between songs or judge themselves harshly at band rehearsals. Whatever the case, the CM is designed to allow musicians to fully enjoy their passion for music minus the tension and self-criticism. Even if you're not a musician you'll find plenty of transferable tips that will inspire more inner peace, along with discovering Bryan's personal journey of music, mindfulness and meditation. Multi-instrumentalist and mastering engineer Nate Wood first came to my attention through his singing and guitar playing via a live performance. In addition to his three solo albums, Nate is also the drummer in the Grammy-nominated jazz fusion group Kneebody. As Nate states, the primary difference between his solo and group are the lack of his vocals. For the complete Nate Wood, one should turn to his excellent third album, Another Time (2014), performed and recorded entirely by himself. Nate's Another Time is undoubtedly one of the best albums of 2015 despite its 2014 release date. Hey, it's new if you haven't heard it...and you definitely should. In this TMT mixtape, their seamless blend of jazz, rock and novelistic lyrics is covered from 1972's Can't Buy A Thrill to their Grammy Album of the Year comeback, Two Against Nature. It's over two hours of my favorite SD tracks.
