Nabihah Iqbal - Dreamer

Song of the Day

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 1, 2023 3:54

Nabihah Iqbal - Dreamer from the 2023 album DREAMER on Ninja Tune. In late April, Nabihah Iqbal dropped her long-awaited sophomore record Dreamer via Ninja Tune. Five years after the release of her debut, Weighing of the Heart, and six since Iqbal's last EP under her former moniker Throwing Shade, the record is a resplendent re-introduction to the London-born artist, curator, broadcaster and lecturer. Blending elements of early ‘80s electronica, shoegaze, and trance with ruminative lyricism, it's a record that hits the heart as much as it does the body. The story behind the record starts in agony, as many great records do, with Iqbal's studio being burglarized in early 2020 and all her work lost, including what was supposed to be her sophomore record. Piling onto the trauma, her grandfather suffered a brain hemorrage leading Iqbal to fly to Pakistan shortly before the pandemic hit and stranding her there as the world shut down. But as all creatives know, what doesn't kill you, gives you better material for your work. It was there that the first seeds of Dreamer appeared, with just an acoustic guitar and a harmonium. Our Song of the Day is the album's title track “Dreamer.” One of less trancey songs on the album, the song is a combination of Best Coast breeziness and Cocteau Twinsian dreaminess. The lyricism is pure unadulterated bliss, “Dream of me /And I'II dream of you,” Iqbal coos. “Sun so soft /And sky so blue /This love is happy love.” The song comes with a video shot in 700-year old palace in Old Lahore, Pakistan and directed by Zayan Agha, who said this of the video, “Taking a documentarian's approach to directing the music video, I gave Nabihah the freedom to discover the vibrant chaos of Lahore. I filmed her navigating through the city's mundane cacophony, resulting in a surreal and dreamy visual experience that vividly portrays the city's essence.” Watch the video and read the full post at KEXP.org.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jitwam is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, and vocalist creating music that fuses funk with disco, punk and hip-hop. He's based in New York but born and raised in India, Thailand and South America. His latest record, Third, explores the idea of finding peace within the chaos of daily life. GAIKA is a south London-based artist, writer and musician whose music pairs dancehall rhythms and melody with imposing electronic beats. His parents were from Grenada and Jamaica, and those influences appear in his music in dark and twisted forms. Elle Shimada is a violinist, producer and DJ from Tokyo but now based in Melbourne, who uses abstract compositions and dance beats to create music inspired by the futuristic underground sounds of Tokyo and beyond. Nabihah Iqbal, once known as Throwing Shade, is a British-Pakistani DJ, producer, guitarist, and songwriter who originally pursued a career in law before turning to music. She blends her influences in new wave and shoegaze with electronics and heartfelt lyrics.

It's Moving Still. It is always a pleasure to be guided through the most treasured music of such a passionate collector, finding lots of new tracks and interesting tales along the way. Many of his selections have served as inspiration for his own work, which seeks to unearth his roots while stamping his own modern mark on the style with electrifying bass lines and acid tones. It is little surprise, given his penchant for the exploration of Arabic music, that Moving Still would begin a collaboration with our past guests Dar Disku in 2019 when he released his bass heavy edit of the wedding classic Bas Ismaa Meny and the hugely infectious disco rework of Sidi Mansour. The latter earning the approval of Palms Trax, Hunnee, Skatebard, Nabihah Iqbal and Esa Williams: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r18FyY_cdyo While we eagerly await his future releases, we're blessed to have him pick out the best of his Bsides for us. Nabihah Iqbal’s music is informed by a much wider world of reference than most. The pioneering artist has a Masters in Philosophy focused on African history, has studied ethnomusicology and has experience working in human rights law in South Africa. She has an academic approach to the way she builds her music - and her vital NTS radio shows - that unites strands of sound from all over the world into woozy pop lullabies, late night synth soothers and heartbreaking, guitar licked vocal dreamscapes. A new album was due from her in 2020, but a studio break-in meant Iqbal lost a whole heap of music. The album will now come in 2021, but in the meantime she has given us a snapshot of where she is at with a one hour mix that is truly pan-global. It’s a characterful selection of party sounds featuring pop music and Sade covers, worldly funk and 80s synth jams that sound familiar but are never quite what they seem. This is a mix with the unmistakable stamp of Nabihah Iqbal’s very unique musical identity running all the way through it.

Her remarkable accolades are born from a dedicated passion for music, thoroughly enriched by her formative years studying History and Ethnomusicology at SOAS, where Iqbal's enthusiasm galvanised a truly global exploration of sound. The result is a myriad of influences that truly shine through in the depth and diversity of her taste and style. Musician, producer, DJ and Somerset House Studios resident Nabihah Iqbal invited artist and photographer Wolfgang Tillmans to share and discuss the music that is most important to him in front of an intimate audience. The talk and collective listening experience was part of the Glory to Sound series - talks, live shows and club nights, with the aim to experience and explore music from different perspectives, and to think about what it means to us. Wolfgang Tillmans Born in 1968 in Remscheid, Germany, Wolfgang Tillmans studied at Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design in Bournemouth, UK, from 1990 to 1992. In 2000, Tillmans was the first non-British artist and the first photographer to receive the Turner Prize. In 2013 he was appointed member of the Royal Academy of Arts. In 2015, he was awarded the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography. Since the early 1990s, Tillmans’s work has been the subject of prominent solo exhibitions at international institutions; in recent years at Kunsthalle Zürich (2012), Moderna Museet in Stockholm (2012–2013), Kunstsammlung Düsseldorf – K21 in Düsseldorf (2013), the National Museum of Art in Osaka (2015), Serralves Museum in Porto (2016), Tate Modern in London (2017), Fondation Beyeler in Basel/Riehen (2017), Kunstverein in Hamburg (2017) and Carré d’Art – Musée d’art contemporain in Nîmes (2018), amongst others. In the beginning of 2018, Tillmans opened solo exhibitions at Musée d’Art Contemporain et de Multimédias in Kinshasa, at Circle Art Gallery and at GoDown Arts Centre Nairobi and at Johannesburg Art Gallery, the first stops of an exhibition tour of Africa and Asia organised by the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen. Since the 1990s Wolfgang Tillmans has produced numerous publications and editorials, nearly all conceived and designed by the artist himself. Since 2016, Tillmans has put renewed focus on his enduring interest in music, producing his own songs and music videos, as well as making live appearances as a musician and DJ. He has operated the nonprofit exhibition space Between Bridges since 2006. First located in London until 2011, he reopened it in January 2014 in Berlin. Wolfgang Tillmans lives and works in Berlin and London. Nabihah Iqbal Many musicians like to speak of versatility, but Nabihah Iqbal has better grounds than most. She boasts an MPhil (focused on African history) from Cambridge, has worked in human rights law and has a black belt in Karate. Formerly known as Throwing Shade, she has ditched that moniker to embrace the name she was born with. She released her debut album ‘Weighing of the Heart’ in December 2017 and has since garnered huge critical acclaim from the likes of The Guardian, Pitchfork, Dazed, The Observer, Q Magazine, BBC Radio 1 and 6Music. Since 2013, Nabihah has hosted a bi-weekly show on NTS Radio exploring the musical traditions of different countries, and released a string of EPs on labels Ominira, No Pain in Pop and Ninja Tune. She collaborated with Chinese artist Zhang Ding for the ICA, been commissioned by Tate to compose music for the Turner Prize, worked with Wolfgang Tillmans as part of his Tate Modern exhibition and was recently involved in a group performance at the Barbican as part of its major Basquiat retrospective. You will probably know Nabihah Iqbal by the name Throwing Shade. Under this name she's released a string of really amazing EPs that blend dream pop, RnB and house music and you can tell her tracks a mile off. But recently she's decided to shed that moniker and produce under her given name, a move that's coinciding with the release of her excellent album The Weighing of the Heart which has just dropped on Ninja Tune. The album sees her moving into new sonic territory, bringing in a focus on guitars, vocals and there is a great influence from 80s indie and kraut rock, and it sounds fantastic. I met up with Nabihah in her west London studio and we had a great conversation ranging from digging deep into her process of writing the album, the perceptions of women in the music industry all the way to the discussing the weird world of Mongolian Throat singing. Now, the album is out already and you should definitely check it, but we go pretty deep on the track Zone 1 to 6000 so you might want to take a listen to that one in particular so you can see what we're talking about.
