43: Should dance music boycott Boiler Room over Palestine?

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 3, 2025 82:51

There was only one topic we could tackle this week. The argument boiling over around Boiler Room and the BDS movement is one of the most divisive and emotionally charged intra-scene disputes we've seen in a long time. There's a lot being said in public and in the comments, with much of it relegated to Instagram Stories with a 24-hour timer. So in the spirit of our mission statement – chronicling underground music culture – we've attempted to document what's been going on, provide some vital additional context, and offer our own thoughts on what's at stake. In this episode we look at the relationship between Boiler Room and its owners – the global events company Superstruct and the private equity giant KKR – and their connections to Israeli tech firms and the Palestinian-led boycott movement. We talk about Boiler Room's recent statement of solidarity with Palestine and the resulting backlash from fans, DJs and former BR employees, as well as Ben UFO's defence of the platform, which triggered its own, unusually fierce backlash. Can Boiler Room consider itself part of the boycott on Israel? What's the right way for DJs, fans and BR employees to show solidarity with Palestine? Why has BR received so much flak compared to the 70-odd other brands and festivals in Superstruct's portfolio? Can dance music be mobilised into a force for change? And what can Boiler Room – or any of us – practically do in a landscape where private equity firms have their claws in everything? If you're enjoying No Tags, thanks – we really enjoy making it. But we'd love you to help us out by leaving a review on your go-to podcast app, which really does help visibility. It had been ever so lonely out there, deep in the darkness of outer space. There were tall tales which he might be able to one day relive and reconcile but those were not to be told now. Those were to be kept firmly secret, locked away in the confines of his mind. For he had returned but what was out there must not. Down here everything was normal. Life was normal. The people were normal. Every day was just the same. Not like out there... Occasionally he'd see flickers and flashes of the wild, alien like faces he'd left behind amidst the stars. Had they ever been real? Returning was bittersweet. Innate Editions are set to breathe life into a rare gem, a lost classic if you will. They are set to revive Connective Zone's 'Palm Palm', a millennium-era cult classic and Ben UFO favourite. Intelligent dance music, at its very very best.

MINA talks about what it's been like as a sober DJ and music lover, why people react more weirdly when you say no to alcohol versus any other drug, misconceptions about alcohol and people who don't drink and why the most fun people she knows don't drink. Jayda asks MINA more about why she created an alcohol-free event, Club Soft, hearing the different reasons she started it, from creating a safe space for people in recovery, people of different religions, people who also just want to be able to rave and get up the next day without a hangover, and creating a generally safer space for women and minority genders. Jayda and MINA also get into when they actually choose not try to level up and expand one's career, and sometimes why getting bigger isn't always better. Di Linh name-checks Ben UFO and DJ Masda as two of her favourite DJs in the interview below, which underlines the lovely duality of her style: her sets are adventurous but buttery smooth. One of Vietnam's most buzzed-about DJs—and a resident at the all-important Hanoi club Savage, as well as Equation festival—she was a punter before she was a DJ. She fell in love with the music at Savage and eventually playing her first-ever gig there, as if it were all kismet. Her sets are remarkably diverse but also remarkably consistent, with a refreshing, mid-tempo pace marked by well-placed bursts of energy. And so her RA Podcast is impeccably mixed, with the pacing and patience you'd expect from someone who has been DJing for decades. Bookends from Dust-e-1 sandwich an hour of house and techno from the likes of Kerrie, Schacke and Mac Declos. Linh finds a common thread that's all about tactile textures, catchy melodies and beautifully mixed-down drums, a sound you'll hear across the current wave of increasingly revered Southeast Asian DJs who prefer mood and storytelling over genres. Di Linh is one of the best of them. @dilinhofficial Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/902

We premiere new music from Canoe label boss and ‘Adonis resident Nyra as he returns to his imprint with his latest single ‘Happy Highs'. Nyra keeps the sun-soaked house vibes coming as we approach the final days of summer, providing an uplifting piano anthem that was made for festival stages. London-based DJ/producer Nyra has been carving his own path on the underground since 2008, with his celebrated parties in hometown Sheffield, drawing guests including Ben UFO and Steffi. A move to London, and career switch from professional cyclist saw his profile rise further, with releases on labels including Secretsundaze and Domino, alongside his own imprint, Canoe – ‘Happy Highs' being the respected label's 15th release. Nyra goes big on ‘Happy Highs', an infectious piano house cut that's impossible to resist. Bright, uplifting and belting, it's already been sending ravers into meltdown during the festival road-tests and is perfect for an end of summer tear up. “With Happy Highs, I wanted to create a track that captured the euphoria of an endless summer of long parties and night outs, with lots of energy and danceability. This is the 15th release on Canoe and kicks off the label's next phase as we head towards our 20th release later this year. It's been going off when I've dropped it in all my recent sets at Glastonbury block 9 and Adonis, and I'm grateful for the support from Ryan Elliot, Krystal Klear, Peggy Gou, and Call Super to name a few. The room was dark as they entered cautiously – it had been so very long since someone had entered the space, let alone someone like him. It were as if the shadows of long lost dancers were still swaying back and forth beneath the disco ball which shimmered up above. There was dust everywhere, murky corners that had been untouched for decades. He wondered whether the music might still even work in a place like this? Would it sound the same? Who still danced these days anyways? As he approached the booth at the forefront of the hall he began to tickle with excitement at the thought of it all. The lights, the people, the music, the past. It was time to breathe again… Jun Kamoda has worked hard, releasing music which has since gone on to be supported and played by the likes of Ben UFO, Eclair Fifi and Tim Sweeney to name a few. His music is raw in places, capturing the true energy and origins of House music in a unique way. This latest EP is perhaps his most accomplished to date…

Zaltsman knows a thing or two about what sets off the dance floor. Whether it's behind the decks, in the studio or as a curator, the London-based artist has a knack for getting bodies moving.  His own productions for the likes of Dansu Discs, Silver Bear and Cross Country are characterised by crisp percussion and infectious rhythms, plus he's a real dab hand at flipping a classic for the club. Over the last few years his music has been getting props left, right and centre, becoming a staple in the sets of DJs like Midland, Ben UFO and Moxie, and we imagine it'll be no different for his next release, You Fly, So Do We. The EP inaugurates the brand new label arm of his long running party series Emergency Room. Since 2017 they've been throwing events across London, Bristol and Brighton, inviting artists like Overmono, Call Super, Leon Vynehall and Eliza Rose to join them. He takes care of this week's Shine A Light On mix with a blend of shuffling, percussive, rhythmic delights that would set the off the dance.

We look back over his incredible career as well as discussing some extremely exciting new projects, most notably his new party TURN '23 which debuts at Strange Brew in Bristol on the Saturday 28th January with an absolutely ludicrous cast of greats from across the electronic music spectrum - DJ Marcelle, Nazar, Shelley Parker, Biped, Sybil, Aura Tekh and of course, Bruce himself.Over the course of this interview, we begin by discussing Larry's early years and formative experiences, meeting Ploy and Batu whilst studying at Bath Uni, moving to Bristol, the city's club culture and how two emails from Ben UFO and Peverelist in 2014 springboard his production career. We then discuss some of his career-highlights, both as a producer and DJ before moving onto his current projects - XRA with fellow Timedance and Hessle Audio heavyweight, Lurka, as well as his new solo live set. Only a trickle of techno selectors in Ireland have a resume that comes even close to Snakebite 616's fka Nathan Jones. The seasoned selector has held his own alongside Jeff Mills, DJ Pete, Ben Ufo, Blawan, Chris Libeing, Cari Lekebusch, Shifted and a many more, as well as holding it down in Berlin and The UK on numerous occasions, once again on immense lineups. Since Nathan settled upon his fresh alias, Snakebite 616 the DJ & producer has received great success and seem's to be reaching his great magnum opus. His track ‘Right Of Passage' released on the newly born ‘Ogham Records' is ageing like a fine wine, as we run further away from the release date, the track seems to be garnering even more applause. It started with an urge to play with sound, a DIY synth, and a desire to know more. After several years buried in books, manuals and patch cables, JakoJako was performing her first live sets around Berlin, and spending every spare penny on Eurorack modules. The passion became all consuming, and in 2017, she left her nursing career to work at the legendary Berlin synth shop Schneidersladen, where's she's been sharing her knowledge of tools and techniques with the city's music makers ever since. Technique is no use without ideas to apply it to, and fortunately JakoJako has a natural supply. “When you hear a sound in the environment, say a car passing by, you don't appreciate the complexity until you think how you might synthesise it.” She explains. “Then it becomes something abstract; a collection of modulated pitches and timbres. I love to listen to the world like this..” Her approach may seem studious, but JakoJako uses this fluency in the language of sound to convey emotion, and each track is an experiment, with success based on the intensity of feeling it creates. Her debut EP “Aequilibration”, released in 2019 on Leisure System Records, showcased this explorative mindset, with four very different stylistic ideas tied together through emotive sound design, sharp production, and a strong sense of melody. The release was followed by a string of live gigs, performed with her modular system and Elektron boxes, including a release party at Berghain, playing a standout set alongside Ben UFO and Marie Davidson. With regular events disappearing in 2020, live music migrated online, finding a global audience in shared experience of isolation. After streaming a live set for HÖR Radio, she was invited to take part in an online event for Arté, hosted by Innervisions and United We Stream, alongside Amé and Frank Wiedermann. This led to a filmed live performance in her studio for Fact Magazine's Patch Notes series, and an in-depth video feature for Electronic Beats, which together have over half a million views (and counting). Offline, JakoJako has made good use of the time in her studio, producing tracks on compilations for B-Pitch Control and Figure Records, remixes for Crouds on Intumi, and most recently, for New Order on Mute Records. More solo work is in the pipeline too, including a new EP for Leisure System Records, due in mid 2021. It’s no enigma why heavyweights like Four Tet and Ben UFO count themselves as fans of East London DJ and producer DJ Champion. The Formula Records head honcho exhibits the unfaltering ability to be any party’s highlight every time he steps behind the decks. “It’s just about the sickest tunes we can play out and put out”, declared Champion as the vision behind his label – a platform that has (pardon the pun) championed the likes of Flava D and Zed Bias – in an interview with London’s fabric nightclub. The same vision drives this 31-minutes-long mix ahead of his India tour in August. Champion wastes no time on anything esoteric, too hard-hitting or too mellow. The selections serve the sole purpose of imparting fun. The same is reflected in the tracklist, as Champion manages to squeeze a huge chunk of his own productions along with undercuts by the likes of Mind Of A Dragon and Wittyboy, within this short mix. Happy New Year one and all! We hope you’ll agree there could be no better way to start it off than with a second mix from the one and only Ben UFO. Think of this as side-b to last week’s side-a as, says Ben, “I went about this in the same way I would go about making a tape: two distinct but related ideas that I think work better on their own than if I'd tried to jam them together somehow.” It is another standout selection that showcases the Hessle Audio co-founder’s dual skills as both a tireless digger but also a technically skilled and accomplished DJ. Where side-a was an often heady affair with plenty of open space for you to get lost in, side-b plots a more high pressure and intense trajectory. It’s the peak of the trip that really gets you on your toes as it hurries through slamming grooves and a whole history of electronic music. The kick drums come on thick and fast throughout. Some feel blissed-out and dreamy, others feel dark and menacing. There are nods to the funky dread of hardcore, slither of electro and swing of UK garage along the way, and every new drop helps colour the mix and ensure it is anything but a linear and predictable affair. Once again mixing crate-digging smarts with a rare dance floor dynamism, these two Dekmantel mixes are the sound of Ben UFO at his best.

Christmas is here! We hope you have a lovely one and, to help make it a musically memorable time, we’re playing Santa and will be delivering a couple of extra special mixes today and next week. Ben UFO is someone very close to everything we do here at Dekmantel. His taste is broad and well informed, and his rare skill in the DJ booth is matched only by his endless quest for exciting new sounds to play. In that regard he embodies our outlook perfectly: he is someone who unearths a previously unknown gem as often as he breaks a red hot new record. His sets have been a key feature of Dekmantel parties around the world and, for us, he is one of the very best DJs out there. In basic terms, this is a deep mid-tempo house and techno mix. But the reality is that it unfolds with such an intriguing narrative that it feels like so much more. The mixing is so smooth you barely notice where one track ends and another starts. Instead, without realising, you find the atmosphere constantly changes, taking you from sci-fi machine grooves to muggy bumping techno, from celestial and hallucanogenic synth lines to creepy meandering riffs that encourage you to follow them into the unknown. It’s a mix that places you at the heart of a smoky dance floor, but is one that offers as much of a cerebral thrill as a visceral one. What’s more, it somehow feels like only half of the story.

Big thanks to the Division Agency and Paul Strange Events team for inviting me to such a great event. Vibes were incredible! I hope you enjoy it. ----- • Website: http://hoten.com.au/ • Beatport Music: http://43rec.com/hotenport • Beatport DJ: http://dj.beatport.com/hotenmusic • SoundCloud: http://soundcloud.com/hotenmusic • iTunes: http://bit.ly/hotentunes • Spotify: http://bit.ly/hotenfy • Facebook: http://facebook.com/hotenmusic • Instagram: http://instagram.com/hotenmusic • Youtube: http://bit.ly/hotentube • My record label: http://www.43degreesrecords.com.au.

Our latest podcast comes from none other than the "First Lady of Detroit Techno," K-HAND herself. Since the founding of her Acacia Records imprint in 1990, Kelli Hand's music has found continuous support from the best DJ's in the world, from Ben UFO to Ben Klock. Her status in the legacy of the Detroit is without question, and we were so fortunate to meet the warm and dedicated soul behind the music when she played a very early Sure Thing. We're honored to provide you with this upfront and heavy mix, enjoy! - More from K-HAND: facebook.com/khandmusic http://www.k-handmusic.com/

Gateway to Zen is a party that's been focused on building a loyal following of willing dancers and then pounding them with techno on a regular basis. They've had some great guests over the past year or so, including Oxyd, Leah Floyeurs and Ben UFO to name but a few, but they've also had a healthy focus on their residents; Nick Craddock, Diskomo Oblast, Tom Whatmore and Charlie Leahy. They're going from strength to strength at the moment, with a Corsica Studios takeover planned for the 22nd April, so it seemed like the perfect time to have a chat with Mr Craddock to find out what makes the party tick. They've also provided our latest Line Out mix, a three-hour recording of the residents live from Bloc.
