This week's Dish is packed with laughter as Angela and Nick are joined by a man of many talents. Peter Serafinowicz is an actor, director, comedian and screenwriter who came to Dish armed with one of our longest ever list of food likes and dislikes. Serafinowicz, born in Liverpool, has made a big impression on TV viewers this year with his role as property developer Johannes in Amandaland. He's also the host of the Netflix gameshow Million Dollar Secret, where an undercover millionaire has to hide in plain sight.  Peter's substantial acting and TV credits are equal to his food likes list, with roles on both sides of the Atlantic in Parks and Recreation, The Simpsons, Star Wars, The Tick and, most famously, The Peter Serafinowicz Show, packed full of sketch comedy. He's an excellent impressionist and is starting to spend more time live on stage, touring the UK in 2024 with his character Brian Butterfield.  As ever, Angela hits the mark, serving Peter BLT pasta. The Waitrose wine experts suggest pairing it with Jip Jip Rocks Shiraz, while in this episode, Peter, Nick and Angela enjoy a glass of Equinox Kombucha. The Dish table is all the richer for Peter's humour, as the trio discuss his desire to be a pasta-shape designer, the fussiness of Come Dine with Me contestants and his love of mashed potato, all topped off with a great impression.  Side notes:  We are doing a live episode in Sheffield! On Friday 4 July, Dish will be at The Crucible Theatre at Crossed Wires Festival. Nick and Angela will be joined by a special guest for their second ever live show. Tickets are available now at crossedwires.live. You can watch full episodes of Dish on YouTube  All recipes from this podcast can be found at waitrose.com/dishrecipes A transcript for this episode can be found at waitrose.com/dish We can't all have a Michelin star chef in the kitchen, but you can ask Angela for help.  Send your dilemmas to dish@waitrose.co.uk and she'll try to answer them in a future episode. Dish from Waitrose is made by Cold Glass Productions.

#537 New York Ticks and Cockroaches - He loved it so much last week that he came back a week later to do it again. A second interview with the very relaxed Peter Serafinowicz. This time they talk about his film and TV work in America, how getting the dream job of playing The Tick turned into a filming nightmare, general indifference to appearing in the greatest ever episode of Rick and Morty, screwing up your lines in front of of Keanu Reeves' beautiful face and working with Michael Caine and wondering if you can talk about the impression you do of him. Plus why the Beatles song A Day in the Life needed to be much longer (listen here https://soundcloud.com/bren-murphy/a-full-day-in-the-life-by-peter-serafinowicz), why some accents are difficult even for Peter (not for Richard though) and both men's not fully positive experiences of Camp America.Buy Peter's Brian Butterfield book here - https://brianbutterfield.limitedrun.com/products/807187-theres-no-business-like-businessSee a live recording of RHLSTP - https://richardherring.com/rhlstpSUPPORT THE SHOW!Watch our TWITCH CHANNELSee extra content at our WEBSITE Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/rhlstp. In this episode, I sat down with Jon Spira to dive deep into the making of his latest documentary, The Life and Deaths of Christopher Lee. If you're a regular listener, you know Jon's been on the podcast a couple of times before, and it's always a treat to hear him talk about his work. This time around, he takes us through the journey of bringing Christopher Lee's story to life—literally.Jon kicked things off by sharing what drew him to this project in the first place. Inspired by a mix of fascination and intrigue, he became captivated by Lee's enigmatic presence, especially after rewatching a rather unusual "This Is Your Life episode" featuring Lee. Jon's documentary doesn't just skim over Lee's storied career, from Hammer Horror to The Lord of the Rings, but it digs into the emotional layers of a man who, despite his towering on-screen persona, was often plagued by self-doubt and a desire to control how the world perceived him.We spent a good amount of time talking about the challenges Jon faced in portraying someone as multifaceted as Christopher Lee. It's no small feat to condense a career that spanned over six decades into a single film. Jon wanted to avoid the usual biographical pitfalls—just ticking off achievements and movie titles—and instead aimed for something more intimate and emotionally resonant. He wanted viewers to come away with a sense of who Christopher Lee really was, beyond just the roles he played. One of the more fascinating parts of our conversation was Jon's decision to use a marionette puppet to represent Lee. It was an unconventional choice, but as Jon explained, it made perfect sense for a subject who was so concerned with how his story was told. He originally toyed with the idea of CGI but felt that it lacked the emotional warmth he was looking for. So, he collaborated with Andy Gent, known for his work with Wes Anderson and Tim Burton, to create a beautifully crafted puppet of Lee. And who better to provide the voice than Peter Serafinowicz, whose deep, rich tones helped bring that puppet to life. Jon's approach allowed Lee to narrate his own story, with other voices occasionally chiming in to add a touch of warmth and gentle contradiction. It's this kind of creative storytelling that sets Jon's work apart—finding new ways to tell familiar stories.Jon and I also delved into some of the broader challenges facing filmmakers today. The industry is in a strange place right now, with budgets tightening, streamers changing their strategies, and the rise of new technologies like AI reshaping the landscape. We had a lively discussion about the role of AI in filmmaking. For one specific sequence in the film—recounting a moment when Christopher Lee witnessed the last public execution by guillotine in France—Jon's team used AI-assisted animation to breathe life into archival photos. It's a decision that has sparked some controversy, especially from certain corners of the American press, but Jon sees it as just another tool in the creative toolkit. He acknowledges the fears around AI and the impact it might have on jobs, but he also believes that, when used thoughtfully, it can elevate storytelling in new and exciting ways.Throughout our conversation, a recurring theme was empathy—something that Jon clearly values in his approach to documentary storytelling. He talked about how he always aims to create a sense of connection between the audience and his subjects, to show their humanity in all its complexity. For Jon, it's not just about documenting facts; it's about exploring how those facts feel, and how they shape the person behind the public image. In The Life and Deaths of Christopher Lee, this approach results in a film that isn't just a tribute to a cinematic legend but also a portrait of a man grappling with his own insecurities, just like the rest of us.We also touched on the state of cinema today—how trends are shifting, the uncertain future of theatrical releases, and what that means for filmmakers who, like Jon, are passionate about telling unique, challenging stories. It's clear that Jon sees the current moment as both a challenge and an opportunity—a chance to push boundaries and keep audiences engaged in new ways, even if it means embracing some unconventional methods along the way.All in all, our chat was a rich, multi-layered conversation, touching on everything from the intricacies of puppetry to the big questions about where the film industry is headed. It's a must-listen for anyone interested in the art of documentary filmmaking, the evolving landscape of cinema, and the enduring allure of a complex, larger-than-life figure like Christopher Lee.

Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

This week, a bone Vervoid joins in the fun as we travel back in time to Wales in 2015 pretending to be Scotland in 1980 pretending to be somewhere in the Soviet Union. And it's hard to say which time paradox is the most annoying, the bootstrap one or the predestination one. Thank goodness Frazer Gregory is here to help us sort it all out — it's Before the Flood. Notes and links Like Steven B in our episode on Flatline, Frazer uses the Christopher Nolan film The Prestige (2006) as a way of understanding what Toby Whithouse is doing by setting up the bootstrap paradox at the start of this episode — it's a magic trick. Likewise, Frazer compares this story's unresolved conclusion with the way that the Season 9 episode of The Simpsons Das Bus throws its ending away with a hilarious voiceover from James Earl Jones. El Sandifer refers to the Fisher King as a Bone Vervoid in her TARDIS Eruditorum essay on this story. Bone Vervoid. Warning: she is considerably less kind to these two episodes than we have been. Of course, A Long Tradition of Doctor Who Monsters That in Some Way Resemble Human Genitalia is the title of Flight Through Entirety Episode 168, and it refers to Human Dalek Sec in Evolution of the Daleks. It is currently the record-holder as the longest title of any episode of Flight Through Entirety. We refer to some of Peter Serafinowicz's earlier work, including his role as the voice of Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace (1999), In 2002, he appeared in Look Around You, a spoof of educational science programmes for schoolchildren. And in 2007, he appeared in his own sketch comedy show on BBC Two, The Peter Serafinowicz Show, which introduced his character Brian Butterfield, who he continues to play on tour this year. The Butterfield Diet Plan is a must see. Picks of the week James Fans of weird time paradoxes will also enjoy Douglas Adams's Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (1987), which, through a time paradox of its own, was the inspiration for Adams's own Doctor Who stories, City of Death (1979) and Shada (1979, but in a nearby parallel universe). Peter Fans of weird time paradoxes will also enjoy the Sex in the City sequel TV series And Just Like That. Nathan Nathan picks the podcast Strong Songs, where enthusiastic and talented musician Kirk Hamilton analyses the music that he loves, in order to discover what it is that makes it great. Highly recommended. Frazer Like Nathan two weeks ago, Frazer recommends that you watch the wonderful new Star Trek series Strange New Worlds, which finished its second series earlier this year. Follow us Nathan is on ex-Twitter as @nathanbottomley, James is @ohjamessellwood,and Frazer is @FelixFrazer. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam. You can follow the podcast on X at @FTEpodcast. We're also on Facebook, Mastodon, and Bluesky, and you can check out our website at flightthroughentirety.com. Please consider rating or reviewing us on Apple Podcasts, or we'll turn up at your place in the middle of the night with a Fender Stratocaster to explain the paradox of entailment. And more Jodie into Terror was our flashcast on every episode of the Whittaker era, recorded just a couple of days after the broadcast of the episode. Bondfinger is our James Bond commentary podcast, which also covers some of our favourite spy-fi TV shows of the sixties and seventies. Maximum Power is a podcast about Blakes 7, a co-production with the Trap One Podcast. It's on hiatus right now, but it will be returning with our coverage of Series C some time next month, we think. And finally, there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. In our most recent episode, we watch a credible and highly-regarded episode of The Original Series with a monster in it that makes that hydra thing in Time-Flight look horrifyingly realistic.

Live from Pawnee: A Parks and Recreation Fan Rewatch Podcast

This week Mark and Allen break down the Episode where we get introduced to Lord Fancyface! Picking up immediately where the Season 5 finale left off, Diane informs Ron that she is pregnant. Overwhelmed with joy and love, Ron proposes to Diane. Both wanting as small and quick a wedding as possible, they head to the 4th floor of City Hall to get married immediately. They pick up Leslie and April on their way, and with them as witnesses, Ron and Diane are pronounced husband and wife. One month later, Leslie is STILL being attacked by the "Recall Knope" campaign. Leslie attempts to fight back, but so far nothing she does is creating awareness or making a difference. Trying to think outside the box, April recently nominated Leslie for an award from the International Coalition of Women in Government, and announces some much needed good news to the gang: Leslie was one of five winners, and the awards ceremony is being held in London!  One month later ... Leslie and April are in London for the awards ceremony, with Ben, Andy, and Ron also present. As Leslie prepares for the ceremony, she discovers her personal London pictures are being used by those from the "Recall Knope" campaign to insinuate she'd rather be in Europe than work through her problems in Pawnee. With the help of Ron, Leslie works past her initial instinct to fly back to Pawnee immediately. Meanwhile, Ben and Andy are in London to meet with a wealthy potential benefactor for the Sweetums Foundation. Ben and Andy meet with Lord Edgar Covington, a wealthy man from a distinguished family with lots of money and property. Ben attempts to discuss terms with Lord Covington, but it quickly becomes clear he is easily distracted and is interested in childish, trivial things ... much like Andy. In fact, Andy and Lord Covington get along very, VERY well, both having similar work ethics and mannerisms. When Ben finally gets the chance to put forward his proposal, Covington admits he has no idea what he is doing. He started the charity to do something good with his family's money but he has heard hundreds of charity pitches and isn't sure who to choose. Also meanwhile, we learn from Ron that Diane originally wanted this London trip to be their honeymoon, but when a huge wave of morning sickness took her out of the equation, she stayed home and insisted Ron go take pictures for her and try to enjoy himself. Ron grumpily agrees, but is not having a great time there. Despite this, he manages to support Leslie, and even tries to mentor her when she finds out Pawnee is still raking her over the coals at home. Leslie also gives Ron what she considers a "proper" wedding gift ... an itinerary taking him to a mystery location that she swears he'll be glad he went to. Back in Pawnee, Tom is peeved at Tommy's Closet being established across the street from Rent-A-Swag, and asks Donna to help him find out information on the unknown owner. Finding only an address, Tom drives there to find Ann and Chris entering the building - what the what? Tom races in after them and finds the pair in a room in the middle of a sonogram. At this point, Tom realizes two very important things: [a] Ann is pregnant, and [b] the person trying to ruin his business is their doctor, Dr. Saperstein ... the father of both Jean-Ralphio and Mona-Lisa. Dr. Saperstein tells Tom he is only doing it to get back at him for ruining his children's lives. Even after hearing this, Tom doesn't really get Dr. Saperstein's reasoning for going after him. Finally, Ann and Chris are together, and doing great - their relationship is better than it ever has been. As things progress, we (and Tom) end up learning one more very interesting fact ... Ann is pregnant! They're trying to keep this just their secret for now, but they're getting a little antsy to let everyone know ... As always, we tackle the tough questions, such as ... Will Leslie's speech go off without a hitch, or could she encounter some turbulence? Can Andy convince Lord Covington to choose Ben's proposal? Does Ron take pictures of London like Diane asked him to? What is the REAL reason Dr. Saperstein is going so hard after Tom? Will Ann and Chris decide to start telling people? Can Leslie's award change how the citizens of Pawnee see her, or will they continue to be "pee-pee-heads"? Is there anything Andy can otherwise do to help clinch the deal with Lord Fancyface? Is Ron able to talk Leslie down out of the crazy tree? Can Jean-Ralphio and Mona-Lisa help to diffuse the situation between Tom and their father?
