Well hello pod fans, here's another beautiful chat about the greatest thing in all our lives, music. This time we have a true DJ legend, the incredible DJ Food is in the house. DJ Food aka Strictly Kev has been making breaks beats and visual treats for over 30 years now. His work with Ninja Tunes in the 90s brought so much joy and helped establish the label as one of the UK's most important imprints. Kev was Trip-Hop before it had the name, he was a pioneer of audio visual effects, supported the Beastie Boys at Brixton Academy and remixed Matt Johnson's The The with the kind of deft touch that few could match. Not only that he was genuinely one of the nicest people we have had on the show and even came over a night out! I think you are going to love this interview. Before all that though we are going to discuss bawdy women with Judith Owen, Judith is an incredible blues singer who has a new LP out celebrating the pioneering women of the the blues who laid the foundation for the likes of Megan Thee Stallion and Lil Kim long before women could even vote! At the top of the show Deb and Eamon discuss the their T-Shirt game and ask why men are so annoying. That's What Goes Around this week and we hope you love it!BIG thanks to @Marke23 for hooking us up. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
On stage and on her album Come On & Get It, Judith Owen has stepped out from behind the piano to sing sexually charged jazz and blues songs performed by women during the repressed 1940s and 1950s. Among them: Mary Lou Williams' “Satchel Mouth Baby,” Dinah Washington's “Big Long Slidin' Thing” and Nellie Lutcher's “Fine Brown Frame.” This Welsh-born, London-raised artist says this project has given her permission to be her unapologetic self, even as she has written her share of heartbreaking songs and accompanied guitarist-songwriter Richard Thompson on several projects. Owen is an energetic, empowered storyteller as she recalls meeting husband Harry Shearer while he was dressed up as Spinal Tap bassist Derek Smalls, describes their life in New Orleans and asserts that “sexiness is confidence.” (Photo by Rick Guest.)
Feeling sexy and empowered.. it doesn't come naturally to everyone but this week's guest is oozing it from her very being. Judith Owen is a Welsh-American singer/Songwriter, has 1million album streams under her belt, toured the world & released 13 albums to date. And her latest album is celebrating the unapologetic females of yesteryear. So, what can we learn from the vixens who dominated from the 40s, 50s and 60s? Judith and Miri discuss how to be your true authentic selves and how that can lead to your own empowerment. Plus, Miri wonders what questions we need to ask to see if our relationships are up to the test and also those moments when our little ones might have interrupted some sexy fun time with your partner! Make sure you follow an subscribe so you never miss an episode, and of course, give us a cheeky five-star rating. Free tickets to see Judith at the Jazz Cafe London on Monday 24th of July. www.judithowen.nethttps://www.instagram.com/judithowenmusichttps://twitter.com/judithowenJudith Owen, a performer whose stylistic range spans rock, pop, classical, jazz, blues, and musical theatre, Owen is also a comedic actress and master storyteller. Born into an overtly musical Welsh family, Judith Owen grew up in London surrounded by classical music, ballet, theatre, and the fine arts. Owen was also exposed to many jazz icons and Broadway musicals that her parents loved (the mixture would become her signature sound). Owen quickly began performing at a variety of different venues around London. Her unique hybrid of classical/ jazz-influenced styled sound soon affirmed a regular slot at Ronnie Scotts. The latest iteration of Owen began with the arrival of her 13th album, Come On & Get It. The project is rooted in her childhood fascination with the jazz music of some of the ballsiest women of the Jazz and Blues world, including unsung trailblazers - Nellie Lutcher and Julia Lee - whom she discovered hidden on the shelves of her father's record collection. Captivated and enchanted by these "unapologetic" chanteuses of the 40's/50's (along with Pearl Bailey, Dinah Washington, Blossom Dearie, Peggy Lee, Julie London), Owen made it her mission to dig deep and find out more from both a musical and historical perspective. The album was recorded at Esplanade Studios in New Orleans - the city Owen now calls home - with a stellar cast of musicians, including Jason Marsalis, Donald Harrison, Charlie Gabriel, Nicholas Payton, David Torkanowsky, Kevin Louis, Evan Christopher, Ricardo Pascal and many more. The result is the most joyful, uplifting, and empowering project. With the London Times calling it ‘one of the most joyous releases of the year', and having garnered support from flagship Jazz radio stations Jazz FM in the UK, TSF in France, and plays across NPR stations in the US, the album has already reached over a million streams on Spotify. Owen kicked off 2023 performing to thrilled audiences in Europe with sold out shows in both Paris and Milan. Accompanied by her All Star New Orleans band ‘the Gentlemen Callers', Owen's live shows are an ‘exercise in confidence' as she “lights up the room with her red hair and her charisma.” “In a snap of her fingers, she takes her .. audience with her, and dictates the tempo to her musicians with a naturalness that is almost divine.” [Toute la Culture] Owen will be on the road for much of 2023 starting with shows in New Orleans this May, before taking a 5 night residency at The McKittrick in New York. She returns to Europe this summer for a series of festival dates and a headline show promoted by Jazz FM at London's Jazz Cafe, before touring across the US in the fall. Judith Owen is co-creator and co-host of the annual “Christmas Without Tears” charity variety show, alongside husband Harry Shearer, that has featured guests including Steven Merchant, Tim Minchin, Catherine O'Hara, and many others. Singer, songwriter, and musical chanteuse Judith Owen has found her joy once again, this time with a new album of jazz standards, "Come And Get It." Judith joins host Robin Milling to chat about making her home in New Orleans to escape the last few years, where she celebrated her creativity and assembled her band of Gentleman Callers for this bold and brash collection. As is her unique quality, Judith owns her sensuality at any age, swinging and cooing selections of her "unsung heroines and role models" such as the title song "Come And Get It Honey," King Size Papa" and "Satchel Mouth Baby," to name a few. To showcase her new CD, Judith will be performing May 10-14 at the McKittrick Hotel (530 West 27th Street, NYC), home of "Sleep No More," in a not-to-be-missed residency in the Manderley Bar. Tickets can be purchased www.mckittrickhotel.com.

It's a new week, with the same ugly shit rearing its head. That people around the world don't know the difference between a Zionist and a Jew is sad, but unfortunately also prevalent in our world where televised lies are presented as "news" and education is not a priority. The reports of attacks on Jews around the nation are surging and it's terrifying. This on top of the recent escalation of violence against Asian Americans. And the targeting of Black and Brown people, especially by police, seems to also be on the rise. Turn away From hate, before it's too late is a line from a song I love ("Fork in the Road" by Judith Owen) and it sums up the main topic on today's show. I'll speak with Norman Finkelstein, author of 10 books, mostly in the field of Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the politics of the Holocaust. His most recent book is "Gaza: An inquest into its martyrdom". The song played at the end might be the most important part of this show. I took the line for the title of this post from it. It's called "Fork in the Road" by Judith Owen https://youtu.be/USWz-ytGErI

We end the week with a busy show that embraces the whole holiday experience! We'll begin with a visit from Harry Shearer and Judith Owen. You know Harry from everything from The Simpsons to Spinal Tap. And you should know his wife, Judith Owen, an amazing singer, songwriter and natural comedian. For years, they've done a mini-tour each holiday season with their show, "Christmas Without Tears". This year, thanks to Covid, it's a virtual extravaganza, available to stream all weekend long. They'll share the details (but you can get it at nugs.tv beginning at 5ET tonight). Then, we'll move on to the holiday dinner table conversation. Who better to talk politics with than author/professor/historian Harvey J. Kaye? And you don't even have to deal with your idiotic uncle!

A packed episode with new Christmas music from Phoebe Bridgers, Nick Lowe with Los Straitjackets, and guitarist Patrick Droney, who covers Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You" as part of this season's Spotify Singles. This week I have two interviews. First, I talk to singer Judith Owen and comic actor and satirist Harry Shearer, who have hosted "Christmas Without Tears"--a holiday Christmas party on stage--yearly since 2005. They talk about the event, Christmas music, and their plans to stream "A Very Virtual Christmas Without Tears" on Friday, December 11. Normally, they would have musical guests from the cities they perform in; this year, they'll have performances from Richard Thompson, Jon Cleary, Steve Lukather with Ringo Starr, Julia Fordham, Topsy Chapman and Solid Harmony, The Stanton Moore Trio, burlesque artist Trixie Minx, Chris Difford of Squeeze, actor John Goodman, Donald Fagen, and many more. I interviewed Owen and Shearer about Christmas music for MySpiltMilk.com in 2012, and recently I talked to Shearer about his new album, The Many Moods of Donald Trump. After that, I talk to actress Amy Carlson (FBI: Most Wanted, Blue Bloods, The Society) and guitarist Seth Jabour (Les Savy Fav, 8G Band) to discuss Office Romance, their project with Syd Butler, also of Les Savy Fav and the 8G Band. So far, they have got together to record two Christmas records, the most recent of which, Holidays of Love, was released this fall. We talk about Amy's love of the classic Christmas compilations--the kind I talked about with Joe Adragna of The Junior League last year--and how Jabour and Butler's job making music for The Late Show with Seth Meyers helped them write music for the album. For the occasion, Carlson put together a Spotify playlist of songs that inspired her or that we talked about in our conversation. If you like this week’s show, subscribe or follow 12 Songs at Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher, Spotify, and now, Pandora.
Host Larry Groce and the Mountain Stage team culled together this episode of songs by some of music's greatest songwriters, performed by various artists over the years on Mountain Stage. We touch on the songs of Bob Dylan, with performances by The Band, Chris Smither, Jimmy LaFave and The Derek Trucks Band.Songs of Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter are done by Joan Osborne, Catherine Russell and Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams.Brandi Carlile does Leonard Cohen and Mary Black covers Joni Mitchell. You'll hear a touching Bruce Springsteen deep-cut interpreted by David Lindley, who also does Warren Zevon's ''Vast Indifference of Heaven.''And we couldn't have an episode like this without some songs of the Beatles, done by the likes of John Pizzarelli, Judith Owen, Curtis Stigers and The Mutual Admiration Society.
Now that's what I call early afternoon delight. Crazy fun with Harry Shearer, who was just as lovely as he is funneeeee! The Emmy-winning actor for his work on The Simpsons was laid back, tuned in, and willing to follow me everywhere. From his young early show biz days working with Jack Benny to Abbott and Costello, and Richard Burton, what? We talked the Credibility Gap, where he teamed with David Lander and Michael McKean. A lot fruit's been borne from that framily tree. Laverne & Shirley, Fernwood & America 2-Night, Fred Willard, Martin Mull, Norman Lear, SNL, two times, not so much like, either time, Spinal Tap, the most fun ever, well maybe along with the Mighty Wind. Working with Fred and Catherine O'Hara, Albert Brooks, Lorne Michaels, who told him he was his first "Jewish" boy cast hire, For Your Consideration, to The Simpsons, where he'e been for 32 years and 23 or os so characters later, garnering an Emmy-award. We crammed a lotta great in, before Harry's off to do a Porch Concert in New Orleans this afternoon at 3:30 PT, with his beloved fastastically talented wife, Judith Owen, and hot stuff percussionist, Pedro Segundo. https://www.facebook.com/officialjudithowen/ About to drop on October 30th, The Many Moods of Donald Trump (insert laugh here), is Harry's latest passion project. An album crammed with the funny and spectacular musis, and musicans. It swings. He's been dropping some advance videos, you can gain access to all here: https://harryshearer.com/ Here's hoping he'll come back for more chat, impressions, and maybe a song or two. Damn, I'm in a great mood. Some things, and people, are worth waiting for. I'll be watching this again. How do I love Lee, let me count the ways… Leland Sklar, one of the most storied and successful musicians to ever grace a stage or session, was back in the virtual living room and kicked COVID ass. Passionate, intelligent conversation on the travesty that is the idiot in the chief, censorship, getting creative, his soon to drop coffee table book, named here publicly for the first time, playing alone in the pandemic, daily commitment to his YouTube channel to provide meaningful content and music, currently, socially distancing and masking to record with The Immediate Family: Russ Kunkel, Danny Kortchmar, Waddy Wachtel, and Steve Postel; as well as with Judith Owen with Pedro Segundo. We went back to his early days, an award-winning child protege on piano, who became a bassist when his school orchestra needed one. Some things are just meant to be... James Taylor changed his life, The Section a huge part of his life, Carole King, Billy Cobham, Phil Collins, Jackson Browne, The Wrecking Crew, the upcoming Denny Tedesco doc, an upcoming album and EP, merching, his fine art, we were all over his highly productive, successful, life. What fun, even if it t'weren't the time of corona. I adore this brilliant, fine human. Grateful as hell he graced our interweb. Pedro Segundo, just what the corona doctor ordered. Killer percussionist, drummer, beautiful soul, Pedro treated us to magnificent sounds, gentle humility, and a heartfelt message about human connection through music. From classical to jazz, Pedro studied, honoring his gifted craft with the passion and unique vision he presents through it. Ever since seeing Pedro at NAMM, I’ve been obsessed. I couldn’t take my eyes or ears off him. Pedro is the embodiment of dynamism. Equally, at home behind 18th-century-style kettle drums and a five-piece drum kit, Pedro makes every object he touches a channel for his incredible musical energy. Pedro’s been the house drummer for Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club for the past 10 yrs. He’s toured Europe, North America, and the Far East with Dennis Rollins Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields, as guest timpanist with Sir Neville Marriner, Murray Perahia, and Joshua Bell and more recently with his own Solo Segundo, Dennis Rollins’ Velocity Trio, Judith Owen, and his Hammond Organ and Drums duo with Ross Stanley. We talked Judith, Harry Shearer, Lee Sklar, Marcus Eaton, his early days in his native Portugal with his talented pianist/vocalist, sister, their supportive parents, studying there, and then in London. Making his way to America, falling in love, and manifesting his childhood dream. Pedro's music can be found here: https://spoti.fi/3aIsrwc & http://www.pedrosegundo.com/ Grateful for a soulfilling hour of gentle gifts. This GC 's & Pedro's closing tune are dedicated to Flo Lawrence, another beautiful soul who left us this day. If there were a Mount Rushmore for bass players, the magnificently bearded face of Leland Sklar would certainly be carved into it. Sklar’s bass lines have framed the sounds of classic singer-songwriters like James Taylor and Jackson Browne, underscored the vocals of Linda Ronstadt and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and built the musical firmament for everyone from Dolly Parton to Diana Ross. Estimating that he has played on over 2,000 sessions, he continues to tour the world with Phil Collins and Judith Owen. Meet the man behind the bass in this career encompassing conversation.
Singer/songwriter Judith Owen joins host Robin Milling the day following her album showcase, “Somebody's Child” at the Iridium in New York. This Welsh-born entertainer is a beautiful songstress who weaves personal life lessons and stories throughout each song with a dab of her cheeky sense of humor thrown in for good measure which propel you not only to fall in love with her music, but with her as well. “I told you I was a bottomless pit of need,” she jokes speaking about wanting the feedback from the audience. Born into a musical family – her father was an opera singer at Covent Garden – where hanging out with Pavarotti backstage seemed common place. She became “obsessed with the piano and singing from an early age;” wanting to experience the same joy her father did when he sang. Unfortunately she inherited melancholy from her mother who suffered from depression. Judith reveals, “Dad's the reason why I can sing and my mother's the reason why I sing and that's absolutely the truth.” After 10 albums Owen tells Robin she has finally reached a stage in her career where people are appreciating her authenticity and how she has reached a point in her life where she can say, “I've been getting well, I've been getting me sorted. I have never felt more comfortable in my own skin.” Never one for a false note musically or in conversation Judith talks about her journey in turning her life around with the help of her music, her mench of a husband This Is Spinal Tap writer/star Harry Shearer, and the unconditional love from her yellow lab, Doris Day. But that's another story! Judith is currently on tour with Bryan Ferry. For more information on Judith Owen visit http://www.judithowen.net/
Pianist-singer-songwriter Judith Owen, sat down with Border Crossings host Larry London to talk and perform songs from her 11th studio album, "Somebody's Child."
