What an incredible honor it was to sit down and talk to the entire cast of Hulu's hit show “How I Met Your Father”! We had so much fun being on the set (in Sophie and Valentina's living room!!!) and seeing up close how magical and special this cast is. Check out my super fun interviews with Hilary Duff, Chris Lowell, Suraj Sharma, Tom Ainsley, Tien Tran and Francia Raisa and be sure to catch a new episode of #HIMYF today on Hulu!
Sidey's nautically themed show begins with a look at the Top 5 Boats and there's so many to choose from we don't even mention Terry Nutkins on steroids lookalike Hulk Hogan's 'sub' standard tv show THUNDER IN PARADISE (see what I did there because submarines are also boats). Ang Lee's 2012 adaptation of Yann Martel's LIFE OF PI is FIGHT CLUB with a tiger though it's definitely a movie about something else too; a parable about spirituality and religion, an exploration of man's survival instinct or perhaps a meditation about the nature of storytelling. To go along with those lofty themes it's also astonishingly beautiful, joyously cinematic, with a stirring soundtrack and features a marvellous debut performance from Suraj Sharma, who carries the bulk of the movie alongside a menagerie of CGI animal performers. Many shows birthed into life by Ragdoll Productions including TELETUBBIES, IN THE NIGHT GARDEN and TWIRLYWOOS have graced this podcast though none of those have a higher horror quotient than long-running children's tv series ROSIE AND JIM which is either about the souls of a couple who were somehow accidentally eternally bound - presumably voodoo ritual CHILD'S PLAY style - to a puppet prison or the story of a man's slow descent into madness as he becomes convinced he is being stalked by two sentient ragdolls who live on his barge. In this episode experienced seaman Tootle meets with a local artist whose attempts to document the exact events occurring aboard the haunted houseboat end with his disappearance and yet another body dredged from a canal. We love to hear from our listeners! Ang Lee's visual epic took home four Oscar Statues in 2013, including one for Best Director. The story of Pi's harrowing journey at sea was brilliantly translated from page to screen giving us some of the most beautiful visual effects and Irrfan Khan stoic performance kept what could be a laughable story of a young man lost at sea with a Bengal tiger beautifully grounded. We also couldn't help but notice Suraj Sharma's name missing from the Best Actor category. What did you think about Life of Pi? With the upcoming Netflix film Wedding Season coming out this summer, a romantic comedy that highlights the Indian fascination for arranged marriages starring Pallavi Sharda and Suraj Sharma, I thought we should play our interview with Pallavi from last year. This interview was the first one I did live after the pandemic. We sat in our friends apartment on the LES, had a few liquid companions, and had a blast....It's our first live interview almost 2 years!! I sit down with my friend, Pallavi Sharda, in our friends apartment in NYC and chat about it all. Pallavi knows what chasing your dreams is all about. Growing up in Melbourne, Australia, she knew from a very young age she wanted to become a Bollywood actress. We talk about making the decision to move to India to fulfill her dreams of working in Bollywood, her biggest takeaways from her time there and what she learned about herself, what she would tell other young women who want to make their mark on the world's largest film industry, and her relationship to Bollywood now. She discusses why there is still a lack of diversity and representation for South Asian women in the film industry, how being an Indian-Australian forced her to redefine herself time and time again, and the reason coming back home to Melbourne helped reclaim her voice and identity. An honors graduate from the University of Melbourne Law, Arts and Languages schools, Pallavi is an advocate for India-Australia relations and the strengthening of intercultural links between the two countries. She was named on the list of forty most influential Asian-Australians at the inaugural Asian-Australian Leadership Summit. Her film credits include Oscar nominated film Lion (2016), Bollywood films Begum Jaan (2017) and My Name Is Khan, Dus Tola, and Besharam. (2015), and comedy Australian film Save Your Legs! (2012). She has worked in Hindi films like My Name Is Khan, Dus Tola, and Besharam. This year, she starred in Tom Jerry and The One, now streaming on Netflix. She also has two feature films coming out in 2022- Black Site and Wedding Season.

"Life of Pi" is the life of humankind. The mathematical constant represents men's attempt to understand the world through logic and reason, but the number itself is irrational and infinite – an apt symbol of human spirituality. About a decade ago, French Canadian writer Yann Martel impressed the world with this remarkable insight, yet it was only 10 years later that his powerful text has been translated into a spectacular format by an equally sensitive, spiritual and talented film director none other than Ang Lee. "Life of Pi" is a fantasy adventure story. Indian boy Pi Patel worships three religions, Hinduism, Christianity and Islam, although his contemporary-minded father would rather he believe in science. On a freighter across the Pacific Ocean to Canada, Pi loses his family and the entire crew in a storm and is the only human survivor on a lifeboat along with an injured zebra, a mother orangutan, a spotted hyena and a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. Before long, the number of survivors is reduced to only Pi and Richard Parker. The boy and the tiger drift on the vastness of the Pacific for 227 days before reaching the point of rescue. According to Pi, it is his fear of the beast that has kept him alive. However, it isn't until almost the end the movie when the story takes a sharp turn and another version of the plot is served, perhaps a more authentic account of such an incredible survival tale. The new narrative removes, or shall we say explains, all the fantastic images of the last 60 minutes and produces a darker interpretation of humanity. The gloomy realization lasts only briefly before it is shoved under the carpet of Ang Lee's positive worldview. The boy embarked on his journey with an open mind for spiritual enlightenment, but while sailing on the vast and precarious ocean of life's uncertainties, he was forced to coexist with an animal. Yet in the end, he is able to tame the beast and find salvation, both physically and spiritually. Despite the constant reference to religion, "'Life of Pi" tells one rather simple story. It is exactly such simplicity that poses a challenge for moviemakers hoping to adapt it. Well, of course, there is also the difficulty of keeping a tiger and an actor safely in the coziness of a lifeboat. That's why it took Fox 10 years to find the right person, while in the meantime wait for CGI technology to mature. Taiwan-born director Ang Lee, with his patience and interest in human spirituality, unfettered imagination and quick mastery of 3-D filming techniques, proved to be the perfect candidate. Special attention must be given to lead actor Suraj Sharma who was able to release the full charge of his emotions into a vacuum, and to cinematographer Claudio Miranda who transformed the imaginations of Yann Martel and Ang Lee into a dazzling spectacle. "Life of Pi" is a perfect combination of commercial ambition and spiritual aspiration. On a scale from one to ten, I think it deserves an 8. 电影是一种生活状态 by EZFM来明 on China Drive, CRI EZFM Also on 荔枝FM:没节操有情操英语影评 微信公众号:China Drive双语中国秀
We continue our Oscar's 2013 conquest with the next in our list of Best Picture Nominees. Adapted from Yann Martel's best-selling novel of the same name, LIFE OF PI is the story of Pi Patel, recounting his experience of being shipwrecked (along with a 500lb Bengal Tiger named "Richard Parker") as a teen traveling to Canada with his family. The film is an unmatched 3D spectacle, directed by Ang Lee, and starring Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Tabu, Adil Hussain, and Rafe Spall. Oh, and Gerard Depardieu even gets a little screen time in there. So get your 3D glasses on, and start rationing your food and drinking water. Let's commit some MASS MOVIECIDE!
