Send us a textCould you survive being stranded on a lifeboat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean with a Bengal tiger? This week, we tackle the extraordinary survival tale portrayed in Life of Pi, diving deep into the psychological elements that make this story both captivating and profoundly insightful. The conversation kicks off with a fascinating discussion about Pi's father's brutal but necessary lesson about respecting wild animals – a moment that undoubtedly saved Pi's life later. We examine the terrifying shipwreck scene, questioning whether anyone could truly survive such catastrophic conditions and the psychological impact of witnessing a massive vessel sink into nothingness. Our hosts debate one of the central themes from the film: "Survival is about adaptation, not dominance." While TJ argues that Pi did establish dominance over Richard Parker at key moments, Alex and Eric consider whether their mutual adaptation was what truly allowed both man and beast to survive. This leads to rich insights about how flexibility and resourcefulness often trump brute force in survival scenarios. The discussion takes a particularly compelling turn when exploring isolation and psychological endurance. Pi explicitly states that it was his relationship with Richard Parker – the need to care for the tiger and the companionship this responsibility provided – that kept him alive. This raises the provocative question: in extreme survival situations, could loneliness be as deadly as hunger? We wrap up by examining the dual narratives presented at the end of Pi's story and what they suggest about truth, perception, and the stories we construct to process trauma. Whether you believe the version with animals or the darker human alternative, this conversation will challenge your thinking about what it truly takes to survive against impossible odds.Join us for this thought-provoking episode that blends survival tactics with philosophical reflection. And remember – in survival, sometimes your greatest asset isn't what you have, but how you think.

Send Kevin a Text MessageIn this episode of Don't Kill the Messenger, host Kevin Goetz interviews Tony Sella, the legendary marketing executive behind some of Hollywood's most iconic movie campaigns. During his decades at 20th Century Fox, Sella was the creative force behind unforgettable posters, trailers, taglines, and promotions for films including Avatar, X-Men, Independence Day, Bohemian Rhapsody, and nearly 1,000 others. He shares insights into his creative process, memorable marketing moments, and the philosophy that guided his extraordinary career.Research as the Foundation for Creative Solutions (01:55) Sella emphasizes that research is only as valuable as the questions asked, highlighting how audience feedback helped solve marketing challenges for films like The Happening and Life of Pi. He and Goetz discuss their long collaboration using qualitative research to refine marketing approaches for hundreds of successful campaigns.Finding the "Essential Idea" in Marketing (03:56) Sella explains his unique ability to identify a film's core marketing hook, as demonstrated with the Devil Wears Prada campaign featuring the iconic Prada shoe as a trident.Balancing Trailer Impact with Movie Quality (11:35) Sella reveals a crucial marketing principle about the relationship between trailers and the films they promote, using examples from both Avatar and The Simpsons Movie. For good movies, the trailer must be exceptional, while for truly great films, the trailer must match the emotional impact of the film itself.Groundbreaking Campaigns: Independence Day (15:49) Describing the legendary Super Bowl spot featuring the White House explosion, Sella explains how they created a cultural phenomenon with the tagline "Enjoy the Super Bowl. It may be your last."From Disney to Fox: Career Evolution (21:12) Sella recalls getting his "PhD" at Disney, working on hits like Good Morning Vietnam before moving to Fox, where he helped transform films like Taken through innovative marketing approaches and identifying powerful campaign hooks. The Three Pillars of Creative Success (43:55) Reflecting on campaigns for Walk the Line and Bohemian Rhapsody, Sella shares his philosophy that the most important elements in creative work are passion, talent, and taste—innate qualities that cannot be acquired.During this lively discussion, Sella showcases the creative intuition that made him a marketing legend while acknowledging the collaborative nature of his success. His story offers helpful insights for anyone interested in film marketing, promotion, or the art of connecting with audiences. If you enjoyed this episode, please leave us a review or connect on social media. Editor - Jennifer Lame ACE, Additional Editor - Mike Fay, 1st Assistant Editor - Nick Ellsberg and 1st Assistant Film Editor - Tom Foligno The OPPENHEIMER editing team of Jennifer Lame ACE, Mike Fay, Nick Ellsberg and Tom Foligno applied their collective storytelling talents to film technology both old and new. While Jennifer and Mike worked to shape and refine Christopher Nolan's story into an instant classic, Nick and Tom were tasked with mastering a hybrid film and digital workflow to make the most of Nolan's brilliant 70MM IMAX footage. Based on the 2005 biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, the film chronicles the life of American theoretical physicist and polymath J. Robert Oppenheimer. The story predominantly focuses on Oppenheimer's early studies, his direction of the Manhattan Project during World War II, and his eventual fall from grace due to his 1954 security hearing; juxtaposed with this are events surrounding Oppenheimer's relationship with Lewis Strauss, a senior member of the United States Atomic Energy Commission who sees Oppenheimer as a rival. It stars Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer and Robert Downey Jr. as Strauss, with the remaining ensemble supporting cast including Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek and Kenneth Branagh. JENNIFER LAME, ACE While Jen claims that her "wheelhouse" in editorial is films that feature people talking in rooms, as her work on MANCHESTER BY THE SEA (2016) and MARRIAGE STORY (2019) both prove, you wouldn't know it by her standout work in bigger features like Christopher Nolan's TENET (2020) and BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER (2022). MIKE FAY As Jen Lame was wrapping up things on WAKANDA FOREVER, she entrusted the early assembly duties on OPPENHEIMER to Mike Fay. Prior to OPPENHEIMER, Mike had been sharpening his skills as an assistant editor on LIFE OF PI (2012) and GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE (2021) and as a VFX Editor on JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 - PARABELLUM (2019) and BULLET TRAIN (2022). NICK ELLSBERG Nick and Mike Fay had more than a passing familiarity prior to OPPENHEIMER. Like Mike, Nick worked on BULLET TRAIN (2022), GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE (2021), and JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 - PARABELLUM as an assistant editor. TOM FOLIGNO A veteran of the Marty Scorsese film school, having worked as an assistant on CASINO (1995), BRINGING OUT THE DEAD (1999), GANGS OF NEW YORK (2002) and THE AVIATOR (2004), Tom was able to return to his film editing roots and dust off his splicer for his role in the film cutting room on OPPENHEIMER. Happy Pi Day! To celebrate, we're examining the metaphorical masterpiece, Life of Pi. With so many possible interpretations, we've decided to crack open the theory you've all been waiting for: the Tiger was really Spider-Man's dad. That's right! Richard Parker was THAT Richard Parker! Join us as we learn how Peter Parker's dad, a young and tenacious geneticist, committed atrocious experiments on a family in India, spliced his own DNA with that of a Bengal Tiger, helped a young castaway named Pi to survive being lost at sea, and then went on to start a genetics lab with Pi and turn his own son into a human-spider hybrid in The Amazing Spider-Man! Welcome to the Juras-Sick Park-Cast podcast, the Jurassic Park podcast about Michael Crichton's 1990 novel Jurassic Park, and also not about that, too. Find the episode webpage at: Episode 45 - The Park. In this episode, my terrific guest Robbie Dorman returns to the show to chat with me about: living all over the place, the Edmonton Oilers, how cold is it!?, Underneath, Killer Hockey Mascot, Gritty, Cocaine Bear, Burial, Fallout, ReGrowth, Akira, developing characters, The Simpsons, The Simopsons Show Podcast, Jurassic Park references in The Simpsons, lamenting over Lex in the second half of the novel, adapating Jurassic Park from novel into film, John Hammond, and much more! Plus dinosaur news about: A New Titanosauriform Sauropod with An Unusual Tail from theLower Cretaceous of Northeastern China (Ruxinia zhui) Decoupling the skull and skeleton in a Cretaceous bird with unique appendicular morphologies (Cratonavis zhangi) Featuring the music of Snale https://snalerock.bandcamp.com/releases Intro: T-Shirts. Outro: Death of a Dream. The Text: This week's text is The Park, spanning from pages 244 – 251. Synopsis: Muldoon leads the cleanup crew in the park to repair the fences, meanwhile Harding and Hammond are out wrangling the dinosaurs which have escaped and returning them to their paddocks. They all return to Control where Muldoon argues with Hammond about not having any weapons strong enough to tackle the Big Rex. As their argument spills into the hallway, John Arnold explains to Donald Gennaro all the reasons why he believes Ian Malcolm and his chaos theory are wrong, and therefore, Jurassic Park is perfectly safe. Discussions surround: Timeline, Believe Me! I Know!, Contrivances of Plot, Chaos Theory, Hubris, and Island Layout. Corrections: I said that in the Life Of Pi, the special effects company was bankrupted because of the time and money spent creating the lion, when of course, in reality they went bankrupt because they were rendering the special effects for a tiger. My mistake! Side effects: May cause your nostrils to stick together, and shuttle-bus operators to wait until your car starts before they leave. Two different objects shot down (when we recorded this) and we discuss a bunch of random crap. The good news is we have 4 great books to recommend!
Sidey's nautically themed show begins with a look at the Top 5 Boats and there's so many to choose from we don't even mention Terry Nutkins on steroids lookalike Hulk Hogan's 'sub' standard tv show THUNDER IN PARADISE (see what I did there because submarines are also boats). Ang Lee's 2012 adaptation of Yann Martel's LIFE OF PI is FIGHT CLUB with a tiger though it's definitely a movie about something else too; a parable about spirituality and religion, an exploration of man's survival instinct or perhaps a meditation about the nature of storytelling. To go along with those lofty themes it's also astonishingly beautiful, joyously cinematic, with a stirring soundtrack and features a marvellous debut performance from Suraj Sharma, who carries the bulk of the movie alongside a menagerie of CGI animal performers. Many shows birthed into life by Ragdoll Productions including TELETUBBIES, IN THE NIGHT GARDEN and TWIRLYWOOS have graced this podcast though none of those have a higher horror quotient than long-running children's tv series ROSIE AND JIM which is either about the souls of a couple who were somehow accidentally eternally bound - presumably voodoo ritual CHILD'S PLAY style - to a puppet prison or the story of a man's slow descent into madness as he becomes convinced he is being stalked by two sentient ragdolls who live on his barge. In this episode experienced seaman Tootle meets with a local artist whose attempts to document the exact events occurring aboard the haunted houseboat end with his disappearance and yet another body dredged from a canal. We love to hear from our listeners! THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Our 2012 retrospective is coming to an end this month. Our second to last throwback podcast review is Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln," starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, David Strathairn, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, James Spader, Hal Holbrook & Tommy Lee Jones. Written by Tony Kushner, the film was a perfect merger of writer, actor, and director coming together to present an iconic figure in American history but finding ways to humanize him and showcase the most important period of his life rather than telling us a traditional biopic. The film received 12 Oscar nominations and won 2, including a third historic Best Actor win for Daniel Day-Lewis. How does the film hold up a decade later? Tune in as we discuss the screenplay, acting by the enormous ensemble, Spielberg's craftsmanship, and more. Joining me for this review, I have Nicole Ackman, Josh Parham, Sara Clements, Dan Bayer & Danilo Castro. You can also check out all of our previous 2012 retrospective reviews for "Zero Dark Thirty," "Skyfall," "Amour," "Beasts Of The Southern Wild," "Django Unchained," "Silver Linings Playbook" & "Life Of Pi" if you have not done so already.
