In this episode, Ryan Barnett returns to discuss his latest projects with host Andrew Hunter Scholey. They include his recent series "Story Girl" about beloved author Lucy Maud Montgomery, and his upcoming series about another beloved Canadian, John Candy. They then move into discussing a film that Ryan suggested, the Quebec "Maple Syrup Porno" film, "Valérie" (1969). What is that genre of film anyways? Why does this film exist? Is this film any good? And is this film actually one of the most important Canadian films ever made? The answer to that last question is yes. For answers to the other questions, you'll just have to listen.
U.S. President Donald Trump has promised 100 per cent tariffs on movies produced outside the United States — but no one is quite sure what that means. We look at what's driving film and television productions out of the U.S., and what tariffs would mean for workers here in Canada.
Who could talk for over an hour and a half about the Daniel Radcliffe/Adam Driver-starring romcom? James Thornton and Andrew Hunter Scholey can of course.... Take the romantic plunge as they discuss the careers of the film's young cast, some random hot takes about relationships and dating and ultimately.... Why did no one see this (mostly) charming take on the old genre.

This week we review Pascal Plante's Red Rooms, an under-the-radar indie that's taken the horrorsphere by storm. A serial killer thriller that finds power in its restraint and shocking prescience, Red Rooms is an evil — yet vital — film to understand the stranglehold of postmodern, screen-abetted detachment. We discuss our culture of macabre obsessions, parasocial madness, and growing numbness, as well as Juliette Gariépy's incredible performance at the center of this film.
In this episode, Colin Everett is back to discuss "Whale Music" (1994). They tackle not just the film, but also the novel it is based on, the author of the novel and the screenwriter of the film Paul Quarrington, and the band that provided the film's score: The Rheostatics. Where do they land on this ambitious film?
Canadian films are still making their way to the big screen with fascinating themes. FITTING IN grapples with societal notions regarding the relationship between body and womanhood. HEY, VIKTOR! tackles a quest for fame and fortune morphed into a journey of self-discovery. THE KING TIDE reflects on community, fundamentalism, and rejection of a larger world. Heavy metal, violence, gambling addiction, and a never-ending pile of dishes serve as the background in THE DISHWASHER to give us a bumpy ride to redemption. Join us in a conversation with Maureen Grant, CCE, Isabelle Malenfant, CCE, Justin Oakey, and Sarah Taylor, CCE the editors of these films who will share their experiences shaping these stories. This panel was moderated by director Chandler Levack.
In this dense episode tackling this NFB Canadian classic, James Thornton and Andrew Hunter Scholey cover (checks notes).... The historical log drivers and their importance in Canada's development as a country; the song's composer Wade Hemsworth and his influence on Canadian music; the 60's Montreal folk scene; Quebec separatism and the 1980 referendum; the film's animator and director John Weldon and his prolific career; the Canada Vignettes and their role in the NFB but also Canadian identity; and finally (*breathe...*) what do they finally have to say about the film itself?
2024-09-11 | Outrage has erupted over a film created by Russian Director and propagandist Anastasia Trofimova, called ‘Russians at War'. Calls for its screening to be pulled from the Toronto International Film Festival have intensified; surely festival organizers should have reacted when the film was showcased at the Venice International Film Festival, despite the public uproar it caused. ---------- Breaking news, as this episode was being recorded, the Canadian broadcaster TVO made a statement that it had withdrawn support from the documentary "Russians at War" following protests from the Ukrainian community, and in fact far more widely than that. But this controversy pales beside news that the film was part-financed by the Canadian government to the tune of $312,000 US dollars. This despite the fact Canada is an ally of Ukraine in its existential fight against the Russian army. A rabble army of murderers, looters and rapists that the Canadian-Russian filmmaker Anastasia Trofimova seeks to absolve and whitewash of their documented war crimes. This is the accusation, but does it stand up to scrutiny? This video examines the controversy and the film itself to understand if the propaganda motive outweighs any artistic merits. If a malign actor, or an openly aggressive revanchist state like Russia, invests money in an information project, with the aim of manipulating the media space and public discourse, to alter both perceptions and policies in that country to favour its own strategic interests, then that is paid for speech, not free speech. And if the parties creating and disseminating those media products don't declare their financial interests, that is disclosure in transparent fashion of who is funding the project, so we can better understand their motives and objectives, then really, this is not free speech, but an informational weapon, an assault on public discourse. ---------- Sources and recommended reading: https://kyivindependent.com/opinion-russian-soldiers-in-ukraine-are-ordinary-guys-who-commit-horrific-war-crimes/ https://kyivindependent.com/outrage-erupts-over-canadian-tax-dollars-funding-russians-at-war-documentary/ ---------- SUPPORT THE CHANNEL: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain https://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain ---------- TRUSTED CHARITIES ON THE GROUND: Save Ukraine https://www.saveukraineua.org/ Superhumans - Hospital for war traumas https://superhumans.com/en/ UNBROKEN - Treatment. (Source: Sardonicast 150 [timestamp: 00:16:09])There's a perpetual unease and oppression to Cube that meshes well with its pacing. One angle about Cube's story is that of how there are unwitting participants in systematic issues. The characters are all named in reference to prison, although not all the characters are named after prison's, as Kathryn learned down the grapevine.Melvin, "[Cube] at some point is a math movie."Melvin talks about his current fascination with numbers as a definitive thing a world of excessive subjectivities.Because the setting and scenario of the cube is so static, the film allows for complex, dynamic character interactions.Thoughts on the ending, and the cube as a metaphor for life.Recommendations:Authority by Jeff VanderMeer (2014) (Book)Saw (2004) (Movie)MAILBAG: Send questions with your first name and we'll answer them in future episodes! Returning to NoN is Ryan Barnett, the host of the podcast "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood North". Ryan has also written a graphic novel about silent film star Buster Keaton. One of Keaton's final films was a project with the Canadian National Film Board called, "The Railrodder" (1965), so Ryan was the perfect guest to have on to discuss. In this episode, host of NoN Andrew Hunter Scholey and Ryan Barnett discuss his graphic novel with artist Matthew Tavares, "Buster: A Life in Pictures". What got him into silent film and Buster in the first place? His research and ultimately interviewing the director of the film Gerald Potterton. All in all a great chat about not just Canadian cinema, but also the golden age of Hollywood and one of its biggest stars.
So, NoN host Andrew Hunter Scholey decided to watch that new Toronto-based "Law & Order" show that just came out. When he came across the episode that was "ripped from the headlines" about the Canadian bread price-fixing scandal "Minnow and the Shark", something struck a nerve and decided he wanted to talk about it. NoN regular Colin Everett answered the call, and they discuss copaganda shows, the staggering amount of "Law & Order" episodes that have been produced what sets this Canadian version apart. And of course, the current cost of living, corporate greed, and how this show decides to portray it.
While the latest NoN wraps production, our friends at Knockabout Media have been producing a great show called "How I Wrote This". In this show, host Pamela Hensly interviews various authors of various media about what shapes their art. In their latest episode, Wiebke von Carolsfeld is interviewed. Check it out, and a new NoN is on it's way!

A thespian at heart, Rango (a stage name) assimilates to the classic western characters found in this small town, and quickly becomes the hero they need, and finds the purpose in his own life. The gang sells their daughter off to LAZAR WOLF this week, as they review an all-time classic musical about life at the turn of the century in remote Russia, Fiddler on The Roof (1971). Based on the smash hit Broadway musical of the same name, the Norman Jewison directed film tells the story of Tevye, the Jewish milk man, and father of 5 daughters. Tevye must wrestle with tradition and the happiness of his family, while dealing with the sad reality of the spreading anti-Semitic sentiment of the local Authoritarian government. Even if you haven't seen this movie, you undoubtedly know some of the catchy songs: If I were a Rich Man, Matchmaker Matchmaker, Tradition, L'chaim (to life), Sunrise Sunset, Do You Love Me... I can go on. Watch it if you haven't, don't let the runtime scare you... then listen along. http://www.MCFCpodcast.comhttp://www.facebook.com/MCFCpodcasthttp://www.twitter.com/podcastMCFChttp://www.tiktok.com/middleclassfilmclasshttp://www.instagram.com/middleclassfilmclass Email: MCFCpodcast@gmail.comLeave us a voicemail at (209) 730-6010Merch store - https://middle-class-film-class.creator-spring.com/ Join the Patreon:www.patreon.con/middleclassfilmclass Patrons:JavierListener Stephen: The Maple Syrup DonJoel ShinnemanLinda McCalisterHeather Sachs https://twitter.com/DorkOfAllDorksRyan CorbinJason forcefivepodcast.comBrendan BealChris GeigerDylanMitch Burns linktr.ee/MitchburnsRobert Stewart SWOProductions.comJason linktr.ee/scenethatreviewsAndrew Martin https://andrewwatchesmovies.libsyn.com/Joseph Navarro Pete Abeyta and Tyler Noe
