It's a place where reality itself unravels, created through the writings of horror novelist Sutter Cane, whose stories have the power to alter reality and drive readers insane. A chill runs down your spine. Your blood runs cold. You feel something behind you, watching. You slowly turn your head and see….A BIG PLASTIC PUMPKIN! That can only mean that our fated Halloween Spooktacular has officially begun! We have six horror movie favorites coming your way, starting with John Carpenter's mind-bending In the Mouth of Madness. The film follows John Trent, an insurance claims investigator, on an assignment to find the final manuscript of Sutter Cane. Cane is a prolific horror author whose works are rumored to drive people to madness. Trent's search leads him to the town of Hobb's End, which has seemingly popped up out of nowhere to match the setting of Cane's books. All sorts of supernatural horrors spread out from the church wherein Sutter Cane does his writing. Is there a logical explanation for all of this? Or is reality truly becoming stranger than fiction? It's another JOHN CARPENTUESDAY for HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST and we've been catching up with some Carpenter picks we've been long overdue to check out. John Carpenter made high end flicks for over a decade but the 90s are certainly his most divisive period. The guy has made, at least, ten good movies. More than many. Movies like Memoirs of an Invisible Man, Ghosts of Mars or The Ward doesn't get the lip service of The Thing or Halloween for obvious reasons but of all the 90s Carpenter fare, today's discussion from 1994 definitely stands out from that period even if it is far from perfect. It's no small feat to adapt the disturbing psychological nature of an HP Lovecraft story but “IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS” is John Carpenter giving it a shot. Sam Neill plays John Trent, a freelance insurance legend who must find a successful horror author that has gone missing whose books seem to be making the people who read them rather affected. From bleeding from the eyes affected to outright axe murder. John is skeptical. How could you not be when everyone is telling you that you're a character in a fictional town that only exists in a fictional story? He'll get to the bottom of this Sutter Cane business or he'll lose his goddamn mind. The title, as well as the first ten minutes of the movie, will fill you in on what happens. Sutter Cane seemed too chill. You know the actual HP Lovecraft was a wide-eyed batshit mess. Do you read Sutter Cane? Join us as we discuss elderly tentacle ladies, hard-boiled insurance investigators and big black crayons in this week's episode on In the Mouth of Madness from 1994.
It's Kelly's birthday and you want to know how we're celebrating? With haunting visions of sexy ladies, with so many spirals, with letting them badly describe some foundational J-horror! Also, a train. ALSO! Time to cash in some long promised chips (that got away from me) and discuss In the Mouth of Madness! It's 90s John Carpenter, so you know it's cynical, rockin', and also maybe not the best movie to watch for the first time while taking notes - sorry, Rose! Try not to get edited out with us as we discuss Sutter Cane, creature chases, books that are movies that are books, and how chips and drivers should interface. (Nearly posted this with the title info of my Star Trek podcast, doing great!)

On this episode, I'm having a spoiler free horror TED talk about In The Mouth of Madness. As part of his Apocalypse trilogy, we get to follow John Trent and insurance investigator looking for reclusive Horror writer Sutter Cane. Lots of Lovecraftian themes and what does one do when fictional words transform our reality into a nightmarish landscape. The artist on my podcast playlist is John Carpenter. Carp-winter continues with the final chapter in John Carpenter's Apocalpyse Trilogy: IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS from 1994! We're sorry about the balls! Reality is on trial as we explore the obvious and not-so-obvious meta layers of Carpenter's Lovecraftian universe, aided and abetted by Sam Neill's villainous energy (complimentary) and Carpenter's propensity for Wet Evil. We're getting super deep into how the heavy lifting of the narrative's unreality is accomplished through Carpenter's critical reputation, the way Sutter Cane writes, the casting, music, location shooting, budget cuts, and of course, Reaganomics. We're also taking time to talk about our feelings on pre, current, and post-apocalyptic storytelling as we wrap up discussions on the Apocalypse Trilogy on the whole.
Is this the best film John Carpenter made in the '90s? How much influence did H.P Lovecraft have on this film? Is New Hampshire the new Maine? Do you read Sutter Cane? To help answer these questions and more, Jason welcomes his friend and With Strange Aeons host Bear as they tell you WHY In the Mouth of Madness is a hella rad movie from the '90s.
"Do you read Sutter Cane?" The second movie we discuss in our appreciation of Sam Neill is John Carpenter's fantastic horror film In the Mouth of Madness.
This week, the boys (minus Dan) discuss the finer points of mob mentality and Cheer goes back to school. John Carpenter's "In the Mouth of Madness," released in 1994, is a psychological horror film that delves into the blurred lines between reality and insanity. The movie follows insurance investigator John Trent, played by Sam Neill, as he is hired to find a missing horror author named Sutter Cane. Trent's search leads him to a small town called Hobb's End, the fictional setting of Cane's novels, and as he delves deeper into the mystery, the boundaries between Cane's fiction and the real world become increasingly distorted. Carpenter employs a Lovecraftian theme, blending cosmic horror with psychological terror, creating an unsettling atmosphere where the fabric of reality unravels. The film is a metafictional journey that questions the nature of reality, the power of storytelling, and the thin line between creativity and madness. "In the Mouth of Madness" is lauded for its mind-bending narrative and Carpenter's expert direction, which combines practical effects and surreal visuals to craft an immersive horror experience. As the film progresses, it challenges traditional horror tropes, playing with the audience's perceptions and expectations. Sam Neill delivers a compelling performance as a man caught in a nightmarish descent into a reality that becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish from the fantastical worlds created by Sutter Cane. With its innovative approach to storytelling and its exploration of existential horror, "In the Mouth of Madness" remains a cult favourite among horror enthusiasts, showcasing Carpenter's ability to create atmospheres of intense psychological unease. In The Mouth Of Madness (1994) tells the story of John Trent, sent to investigate the disappearance of horror novelist Sutter Cane, and recover the manuscript for his latest novel. As an epidemic of violent behaviour spreads across the land, Trent tracks Cane to Hobb's End, a town previously thought to exist only in Cane's novels. There, Trent will discover unimaginable horrors that have the potential to rewrite reality in terrible ways. Cosmic Horror season kicks off with a Carpenter love letter to HP Lovecraft. Expect tension and tentacles, madness and monsters, plus an extended discussion of whether or not it's ok to only give an axe murderer a bucket to use as a toilet. All of which leads to one question: How would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: Every species can sense its own extinction. Next time, Cosmic Horror season continues with The Color Out Of Space (2019).

We begin in an asylum for the criminally insane. A man in a straitjacket is hauled into the facility and thrown into a padded cell. Visited by a psychiatrist, the man begins telling his story, while acknowledging that something awful is happening in the outside world. We flash back: renowned horror writer Sutter Cane has disappeared. Seeking to locate Cane, and collect his new novel, In the Mouth of Madness, the head of Arcane publishing, Jackson Harglow, hires crack Insurance investigator John Trent – a man with a nose for frauds and whose skepticism seemingly knows no bounds. Trent has already run into a spot of trouble – after reading a couple chapters of Cane's latest, Cane's agent becomes an axe-wielding maniac, crashing through the window of a local café where Trent is dining. The why, for now, is left unexplained, but as we learn, Cane's novels have a strange, disorienting effect on its ‘less stable' readers. Trent and Cane's editor, Linda Styles, head to Hobb's End, New Hampshire, where they believe Cane is living. Trent and Styles discover a place that seems almost too quaint to be real, and almost immediately, a terrible secret that upends Trent's life as he knows it, and has major repercussions for Sutter Cane fans worldwide. In this episode, we discuss two of our favorite movies: I, Madman (literally the second horror movie Kelly saw and one she watched repeatedly growing up) and In the Mouth of Madness (one we both love but which Josh has watched weekly for literal years). Dem Boys discuss the John Carpenter movie "In the Mouth of Madness." They also take some of their favorite second-string Sutter Cane novels out of storage.
Tim and Tay dig into their first horror movie of October with John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness, discussing what it means to watch horror, the movie's classic literature and real-world psychological inspirations, and more. In the Mouth of Madness tells the story of John Trent, an insurance investigator tasked with tracking down best-selling horror novelist Sutter Cane. When the investigation leads both Trent and Cane's editor Linda Styles to a presumed fictional town full of strange phenomena, the two begin to question their grip on reality. In the Mouth of Madness was directed by John Carpenter, written by Michael de Luca, and stars Sam Neil, Julie Carmen, and Jurgen Prochnow, and was released on Dec. 10, 1994. In the Mouth of Madness is available as a digital rental. Scene (31:00 - 35:47)Styles and Trent drive through the night to find the fabled town of Hobbs End. While Trent sleeps, Styles encounters a young boy riding down the highway on his bike. Moments later she sees another similar figure, although much older, on a bike going the opposite way. The boy appears for a third time and is struck by the car. Trent and Styles stop to check the body and the boy cries: “I can't get out”. He then mysteriously gets up and rides away. Styles continues driving, experiencing some supernatural phenomena before crossing a covered bridge that leads them right into Hobbs End.Links10:40 - Black Check episode on Halloween12:50 - John Carpenter's financial approach to remakes22:30 - HP Lovecraft23:20 - The King in Yellow24:00 - Media horror in True Detective26:30 - GDT's At the Mountains of Madness28:30 - Lovecraft's racism30:00 - Filming locations in Canada31:30 - Giger's alien designs34:50 - "groupthink"1:06:20 - Sorcerer essayRecommendationsTim: The Empty Man (Prior, 2020). With his creepy new film Nightbooks freshly landed on Netflix, director David Yarovesky (The Hive, Brightburn) is here to discuss John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness, the 1994 mind-bender starring Sam Neill as an insurance investigator on the trail of a vanished author whose books may be driving readers insane. Your genial host Norm Wilner does not read Sutter Cane, because it's safer for everyone that way.

Welcome ghouls and goblins to this spooktacular episode of the ghoulishly good...alright, I can't do this anymore, but it's Halloween, so we wanted to do something appropriate and thus, we're reviewing the third and final installment in John Carpenter's Apocalypse Trilogy, In the Mouth of Madness! The film may be the least financially successful of Carpenter's career - and, perhaps, a harbinger of his career decline - but the cult classic is hands down the best film that we've ever covered when it comes to depicting fatalism and existential dread. After all, how terrifying is it to realize that the film we're watching is the film that John Trent was watching, which means that it's the direct adaptation of Sutter Cane's book, which means that Sutter Cane intended for us to watch it. Happy Halloween, all! Wear a mask and wear a mask over that mask!

This week, Travis is joined by Christina and Keith to talk about John Carpenter's 1995 Lovecraftian inspired, reality bending film, In the Mouth of Madness. The question is, do you read Sutter Cane? Thanks go out to Audie Norman (@OddlyNormalOne) for the album art. Outro music "In Pursuit" provided by Purple-Planet.net
We watch some Sutter Cane.
“Do you read Sutter Cane?” It's the question on everyone's lips. Well, everyone except John Trent (Sam Neill), an insurance investigator out to find the truth. Always has the upper hand on any situation, including the disappearance of mmega-successfulhorror author Sutter Cane (Jürgen Prochnow). Of course, the world of Cane has so much more to […]
Do you read Sutter Cane? This month the John's are joined by Vik Weet, screenwriter and co-host of the Darkest Hour Podcast to watch John Carpenter's In The Mouth of Madness. In this whopper of an episode we tackle such easy subjects as the very fabric of human reality, the meaning of our own existence and the use of "stygian" in a well written sentence. Will we come out the other end well rounded, sane individuals or will the longest Hold Up episode we've ever recorded usher in a new age of insanity and doom the world to an apocalypse? Listen and find out... if you dare!
