BILLY ZANE-UARY heads out to sea... with the aquatic thriller, DEAD CALM, from 1989. For Those Who Came In Late, we're doing a month-long celebration of one of our best and BALDEST actors, Mr. Billy Zane. And this week, we're joined by another Zane-iac -- friend-of-the-show, Tommy Nuggetz. Give him a follow and show him some love on the socials. What happens when you're in the middle of the ocean and Billy Zane rows up to your boat? Well, young Nicole Kidman and Dr. Alan Grant from Jurassic Park are about to find out! We discuss Zane's star-making performance (of course!), debate whether or not Young Nicole Kidman is creepy (jury may still be out on that one), and find out from Mark what it was like to watch this movie on an airplane when he was just a young, impressionable lad (YIKES). We also get a late-breaking voicemail LIVE on-air like this is CNN or something. Wild stuff! Scrub ahead to 6:42 if you want to get right to the review, but we don't waste too much time this week. We were all ready and raring to sail BALDLY ahead into another Zane-tastic episode... Wanna be on the show? Call us and leave a voicemail at (707) 948-6707. It's May and that means it's Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month! We are jumping into a group of beloved films from the Asian diaspora. We are starting with the amazing "One Cut of the Dead". It's a low budget Japanese horror film about a low budget Japanese horror film, but just when you think you've seen all the layers, you hit the midpoint of the movie and you realize you've just been staring at a tree and you're in the middle of the forest. It's an incredible work of heart and staggering genius about finding the art and love in making movies of moderate mediocracy. It's a movie about movies, but not in that way. In this episode, Mike and Chris chat with acclaimed screenwriter and bestselling author Terry Hayes about his latest novel, THE YEAR OF THE LOCUST, a decade in the making. About Terry: Terry Hayes is an Australian screenwriter, producer, and novelist, born on October 8, 1951, in Sussex, England. Known for his versatile career, Hayes has made significant contributions to the film industry, having penned scripts for blockbuster movies like "Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior," "Dead Calm," and "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome." In addition to his success in filmmaking, Hayes is an accomplished novelist. His debut novel, "I Am Pilgrim," a gripping espionage thriller, received widespread acclaim for its intricate plot and compelling storytelling. Hayes continues to captivate audiences with his talent for weaving thrilling narratives across multiple creative mediums. Raves and Reviews for THE YEAR OF THE LOCUST: “Go in expecting the unexpected, and you'll walk away, jaw dragging on the floor, stunned and unable to stop thinking about this book for weeks . . . Shocking, far-fetched, but filled with bloody good fun, Terry Hayes comes out swinging yet again with The Year of the Locust, mixing storylines you might expect from Robert Ludlum and James Rollins, with a touch of Crichton and Fleming for added good measure.”– The Real Book Spy “THE YEAR OF THE LOCUST is the must read of the year for the true connoisseur of the classic espionage thriller. Terry Hayes' runaway bestseller I AM PILGRIM was an amazing tour de force; THE YEAR OF THE LOCUST reaches new heights in storytelling. Wonderfully literate, beautifully written, and tightly plotted. This one will stay with you a long time.” — Nelson DeMille, New York Times bestselling author of BLOOD LINES “An absolutely brilliant, tension-filled, tour de force. With a career that spans over four decades, Kidman has starred in almost 100 TV and film projects and picked up all of the most prestigious awards including, an Oscar, Bafta and six Golden Globes. She was born in Hawaii to Australian parents: her father was a biochemist and later a psychologist, and her mother was a nurse educator. Aged 3, she moved to Australia, and it was there, that she found her love of acting. She headed to Hollywood at 20 for a starring role opposite Sam Neill in the psychological thriller Dead Calm – and she quickly made her mark. She has since forged a very successful career – in an industry renowned for its fickleness. In this episode, she discusses her latest project – Expats – an Amazon Prime drama directed by The Farwell's Lulu Wang. It follows three American women living in Hong Kong whose lives are impacted by a horrific event – the disappearance of a young boy. Kidman plays Margaret, the mother of the missing child. In this episode, she sits down with Kelly-Anne Taylor to unpick the emotional impact the role had– and the importance of having more women behind the lens. Plus, she talks about inner resilience being a superpower and reveals how she deals with negative press. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (01/08/2024): 3:05pm- Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spent several days in an intensive care unit at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland following elective surgery—though the precise surgery has not been disclosed. Alarmingly, the White House—including President Joe Biden—was not informed of Secretary Austin's incapacitation for more than three days. Equally concerning, while Secretary Austin was in intensive care, Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks was on vacation in Puerto Rico. Will anyone be held accountable for this disastrous breakdown in communication? Secretary Austin released a statement on Saturday addressing the issue: “I am very glad to be on the mend and look forward to returning to the Pentagon soon. I also understand the media concerns about transparency and I recognize I could have done a better job ensuring the public was appropriately informed. I commit to doing better.”  3:30pm- While appearing on ABC's This Week with George Stephanopoulos, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said it should be up to the states to determine whether or not Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump appears on primary ballots. 3:35pm- While speaking with Symone Sanders on MSNBC, Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said states should take “very aggressive action” to keep Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump off their ballot. 3:40pm- #1 Global Best-Selling Author Terry Hayes joins The Rich Zeoli Show to announce he'll be participating in a 1210 WPHT Speaker Series event on February 7th at Rosemont College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. Hayes is the author of the new book, “The Year of the Locust”—and has won numerous awards for his work as an author and film producer. The National Park Service is currently seeking commentary on its decision to redesign Welcome Park—including the removal of Penn's statue. You can leave your comments here: https://parkplanning.nps.gov 4:30pm- Rich refuses to watch movies with subtitles, Matt believes “The Holdovers” starring Paul Giamatti was the best picture of 2023, and is Microsoft's Clippy male or female?   5:05pm- In a new editorial for Reason, Greg Lukianoff and Rikki Schlott argue that universities are now using diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) statements to “enforce group think” on campuses. They write: “Yoel Inbar must not be allowed to teach psychology at UCLA—or so a student petition informed the California university's administration this past July. Inbar is an eminent, influential, and highly cited researcher with a Ph.D. in social psychology from Cornell University. There is no question that he is qualified. Anyone worth their salt doing work on political polarization knows Inbar's name. Inbar also jumped through all the hoops UCLA put up for the job, including submitting a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) statement, which is currently all the rage in colleges and universities. He even shares the politics of the majority of the psychology department. But on his podcast, Inbar had expressed relatively mild concerns over the ideological pressures that DEI statements impose and wondered aloud whether they do harm to diversity of thought. As a result of this petition—signed by only 66 students—UCLA did not hire Inbar. And he's not the only academic this has happened to. Far from it.” You can read the full editorial here: https://reason.com/2024/01/06/the-conformity-gauntlet/ 5:20pm- A brief debate on deontological ethics. Would Immanuel Kant agree that it is ok to lie if a woman asks you, “does this dress make me look fat?” 5:25pm- On Monday, former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease Dr. Anthony Fauci testified before the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic. PLUS, Howard Stern tells his audience that he finally contracted Covid. Now that he has immunity, will he continue to avoid society? 5:40pm- While appearing on State of the Union with Jake Tapper, Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC) said “I'm not worried, I'm very concerned” about President Joe Biden having underwhelming support from Black voters ahead of the 2024 presidential election. 5:50pm- Tyler Pager of The Washington Post writes: “Former president Barack Obama has raised questions about the structure of President Biden's reelection campaign, discussing the matter directly with Biden and telling the president's aides and allies the campaign needs to be empowered to make decisions without clearing them with the White House, according to three people familiar with the conversations.” You can read the full article here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/01/06/obama-biden-meeting-campaign-2024/ 5:55pm- Is Transylvania a real place? 6:05pm- Dr. Victoria Coates— Former Deputy National Security Advisor & the Vice President of the Davis Institute for National Security and Foreign Policy at The Heritage Foundation—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss The National Park Service's bizarre decision to remove William Penn's statue from Welcome Park in Philadelphia, PA as part of an effort to better promote “inclusivity.” Dr. Coates is the author of “David's Sling: A History of Democracy in Ten Works of Art.” You can find her book here: https://www.amazon.com/Davids-Sling-History-Democracy-Works/dp/1594037213 6:30pm- #1 Global Best-Selling Author Terry Hayes joins The Rich Zeoli Show to announce he'll be participating in a 1210 WPHT Speaker Series event on February 7th at Rosemont College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. Support our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thepinksmoke Hosts Christopher Funderburg & John Cribbs are joined by filmmaker & pulp paperback aficionado Steven Sheil to discuss semi-legendary, semi-forgotten crime fiction author Charles K. Williams. The group looks at a pair of nautical thrillers, Aground & its sequel Dead Calm (most famously adapted into the Billy Zane/Sam Neil classic (& also unsuccessfully adapted in yet another Orson Welles production debacle.)) Following the story of a no-nonsense charter boat captain & the charming, irrepressible widow he falls for, the aesthetic/philosophical difference between the books represents the shift happening in pulp crime in fiction of the era: the move from classic hardboiled, masculine stories to psychological thrillers concerned with the inner lives of criminals. It's a fantastic conversation about one of the most successful crime writers of his era, an author undeserving of his slow fade into obscurity. Austin Leonard Jones is a singing storyteller, spinning narratives based in fact and fiction with a penchant for writing country-flavored tunes that feel familiar from the get-go.  Born and raised in Texas, he currently calls Ojai, CA his home.  In the past year he's released four albums on cassette tape: a live record, a collection of new songs called “Dead Calm,” and a ten-year retrospective in two volumes, called “The Wonder Years of Austin Leonard Jones” on Perpetual Doom records.  He's the guy who helped to facilitate my season one interview with Bobby Frank Brown, one of the most popular episodes I've put out to date, and since then I've discovered Austin's albums and I literally cannot stop listening and singing along.  I rank him along side my favorite American songwriters, right up there with Kris Kristofferson and David Berman.  You might have heard his live performance and interview from the Scherler Sundays 2022 concert series, if not, you might wanna check that out after this is over to get a double dose of goodies from this guy.  Today we're talking tour stories, wholesome activities in Mexico, veggie burgers, the Beach Boys, being a strict band leader, and riding around in the pickup with his best friend Shenandoah. The illustration for this episode is by Lani Morrison.Low Profile is supported by you at patreon.com/lowprofileFind all episodes archived at lowprofilepodcast.comThanks to Olympia WA in-kind supporters Schwartz's Deli, San Francisco Street Bakery, Old School Pizzeria, Rainy Day Records and Scherler Easy Premium Shitty American Lager from Three Magnets Brewing Company.
