A chill runs down your spine. Your blood runs cold. You feel something behind you, watching. You slowly turn your head and see….A BIG PLASTIC PUMPKIN! That can only mean that our fated Halloween Spooktacular has officially begun! We have six horror movie favorites coming your way, starting with John Carpenter's mind-bending In the Mouth of Madness. The film follows John Trent, an insurance claims investigator, on an assignment to find the final manuscript of Sutter Cane. Cane is a prolific horror author whose works are rumored to drive people to madness. Trent's search leads him to the town of Hobb's End, which has seemingly popped up out of nowhere to match the setting of Cane's books. All sorts of supernatural horrors spread out from the church wherein Sutter Cane does his writing. Is there a logical explanation for all of this? Or is reality truly becoming stranger than fiction? It's another JOHN CARPENTUESDAY for HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST and we've been catching up with some Carpenter picks we've been long overdue to check out. John Carpenter made high end flicks for over a decade but the 90s are certainly his most divisive period. The guy has made, at least, ten good movies. More than many. Movies like Memoirs of an Invisible Man, Ghosts of Mars or The Ward doesn't get the lip service of The Thing or Halloween for obvious reasons but of all the 90s Carpenter fare, today's discussion from 1994 definitely stands out from that period even if it is far from perfect. It's no small feat to adapt the disturbing psychological nature of an HP Lovecraft story but “IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS” is John Carpenter giving it a shot. Sam Neill plays John Trent, a freelance insurance legend who must find a successful horror author that has gone missing whose books seem to be making the people who read them rather affected. From bleeding from the eyes affected to outright axe murder. John is skeptical. How could you not be when everyone is telling you that you're a character in a fictional town that only exists in a fictional story? He'll get to the bottom of this Sutter Cane business or he'll lose his goddamn mind. The title, as well as the first ten minutes of the movie, will fill you in on what happens. Sutter Cane seemed too chill. You know the actual HP Lovecraft was a wide-eyed batshit mess. In THE BLESSING by Gary Smalley and John Trent they give the 5 components of the blessing that children need from their fathers. They are: 1. Meaningful Touch “Touch is central to human social life. It is the most developed sensory modality at birth, and it contributes to cognitive, brain, and socioemotional development throughout infancy and childhood.” Field, 2001; Hertenstein. Human touch reduces the stress hormone cortisol. In other words, it imparts peace. 2. A Spoken Word “Research shows that how and how much a parent talks and interacts with their child has a big impact on the child’s success in school and life. Children aren’t born smart; they’re made smart by their parents talking and interacting with them.” This does not just apply to early childhood; it applies throughout our lives. 3. Attaching “high value” to the Child How do we attach high value to a person? • Be a good listener. Give them your full attention. • Offer perspectives that address their present issues • Be kind and generous with your time and attention • Recognize their best qualities and affirm them and draw them out • Affirm their character and their talents 4 Picturing a Specific Future for the Child This can either focus on some talent or aptitude that the father sees in the child, or it may be an actual job or calling. Care must be taken here because not every dream a father has for his child is God’s choice. This is where prayer and hearing God’s voice is essential. 5 Making an active commitment to fulfilling the Dream Some of you might be saying this just sounds like child psychology. Does this have anything to do with God and the Bible? “As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” Mat. 3:16-17 If Jesus needed this blessing (which He did) how much more do you need it? Here is the great news, we can release the Father’s Blessing not only to our natural children, but to our spiritual children as well. Not only that but we can also release the Father’s blessing to our brothers and sisters in Jesus!

This week, the boys (minus Dan) discuss the finer points of mob mentality and Cheer goes back to school. John Carpenter's "In the Mouth of Madness," released in 1994, is a psychological horror film that delves into the blurred lines between reality and insanity. The movie follows insurance investigator John Trent, played by Sam Neill, as he is hired to find a missing horror author named Sutter Cane. Trent's search leads him to a small town called Hobb's End, the fictional setting of Cane's novels, and as he delves deeper into the mystery, the boundaries between Cane's fiction and the real world become increasingly distorted. Carpenter employs a Lovecraftian theme, blending cosmic horror with psychological terror, creating an unsettling atmosphere where the fabric of reality unravels. The film is a metafictional journey that questions the nature of reality, the power of storytelling, and the thin line between creativity and madness. "In the Mouth of Madness" is lauded for its mind-bending narrative and Carpenter's expert direction, which combines practical effects and surreal visuals to craft an immersive horror experience. As the film progresses, it challenges traditional horror tropes, playing with the audience's perceptions and expectations. Sam Neill delivers a compelling performance as a man caught in a nightmarish descent into a reality that becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish from the fantastical worlds created by Sutter Cane. With its innovative approach to storytelling and its exploration of existential horror, "In the Mouth of Madness" remains a cult favourite among horror enthusiasts, showcasing Carpenter's ability to create atmospheres of intense psychological unease. Would you give your son a blessing? It may sound like a strange concept, but it's seen throughout the Bible between fathers and sons. Dr. John Trent and Dr. Gary Smalley wrote about this in their book, The Blessing. They say that most blessings in the Bible include five things, quote, “meaningful and appropriate touch, a spoken message, attaching high value, picturing a special future, and an active commitment.”Try it yourself. Before your son goes to bed, give him a hug. Tell him about his worth, his future, and your role in all of it. It may feel awkward at first, but ask God to give you the right words. I promise, even if your son doesn't seem to respond, it will mean the world to him. For more ideas on raising boys to be godly men, visit Trail Life USA or RaisingGodlyBoys.com.

It's episode 273...and I'm not insane, you hear me! I'M NOT INSANE! In The Mouth Of Madness (1994) tells the story of John Trent, sent to investigate the disappearance of horror novelist Sutter Cane, and recover the manuscript for his latest novel. As an epidemic of violent behaviour spreads across the land, Trent tracks Cane to Hobb's End, a town previously thought to exist only in Cane's novels. There, Trent will discover unimaginable horrors that have the potential to rewrite reality in terrible ways. Cosmic Horror season kicks off with a Carpenter love letter to HP Lovecraft. Expect tension and tentacles, madness and monsters, plus an extended discussion of whether or not it's ok to only give an axe murderer a bucket to use as a toilet. All of which leads to one question: How would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: Every species can sense its own extinction. Next time, Cosmic Horror season continues with The Color Out Of Space (2019).
Prodigal You may have read a myriad of books about raising godly kids and you are truly following the principles, but one of your own kids walks away from God. You could be a Sunday school teacher who taught other parents how to bring up godly kids and yet your child still leaves the fold. Or you are actually the author of a preeminent parenting book and still one of your kids abandons the Lord. As a parent, if you've been disillusioned by doing things right this program is for you. Last time Kari Trent-Stageberg said, “Even though there was not a day that I didn't hear or know that my parents were crazy about me, and that there was a God who was crazy about me - for me what it really was, was that God just felt incredibly abstract and I wasn't able at the time to figure out the relationship piece. It made me think, "why would I follow this if it doesn't actually impact my life?” Today we will continue our conversation. Discussing Endurance with Dr. John Trent & Kari Trent Stageberg Dr. John Trent is the Founder and President of the organization Strong Families. He is also the author of the book “The Blessing.” His daughter Kari Trent Stageberg works alongside her dad as CEO of Strong Families and together they help build stronger marriages, coach parents to be better parents, and move everyone toward a closer relationship with God. Episode Highlights: How long does Kari say that she lived in rebellion? What does John Trent say to parents of children who walked away from God 20+ years ago and show no signs of returning? Where did John go in the Bible to find encouragement while his daughter was walking away from God? What does Hebrews 13:5 say? What does Kari say we don't get to choose? Image from Canva

We begin in an asylum for the criminally insane. A man in a straitjacket is hauled into the facility and thrown into a padded cell. Visited by a psychiatrist, the man begins telling his story, while acknowledging that something awful is happening in the outside world. We flash back: renowned horror writer Sutter Cane has disappeared. Seeking to locate Cane, and collect his new novel, In the Mouth of Madness, the head of Arcane publishing, Jackson Harglow, hires crack Insurance investigator John Trent – a man with a nose for frauds and whose skepticism seemingly knows no bounds. Trent has already run into a spot of trouble – after reading a couple chapters of Cane's latest, Cane's agent becomes an axe-wielding maniac, crashing through the window of a local café where Trent is dining. The why, for now, is left unexplained, but as we learn, Cane's novels have a strange, disorienting effect on its ‘less stable' readers. Trent and Cane's editor, Linda Styles, head to Hobb's End, New Hampshire, where they believe Cane is living. Trent and Styles discover a place that seems almost too quaint to be real, and almost immediately, a terrible secret that upends Trent's life as he knows it, and has major repercussions for Sutter Cane fans worldwide.
