A.e.r.o., Borrtex, Auditive Escape, Gabríel Ólafs, Deuter, Javier Paxariño, Russel Walder, Secret of Elements, The Silent Jazz Ensemble, Sven Laux & Fione, the beka, Ladd Allen Doane, Penguin Cafe. Most (if not all) previous Ambientblog mixes always had some dark moments in them, they are never 'just' relaxing. You can only feel release if you also felt tension. This time, I wanted to avoid the darkness and create a 'lighter mood mix'. Not of the 'Ibiza Chillout Lounge' kind, but one that can be played in the background and is still exciting enough to listen to. I hope I succeeded, but of course, you're the one to decide about that! With two hours, Cloudwatching is longer than usual. Only a few tracks are included in their full length, but most are heavily edited or even just short fragments. Also, they are often overlayed, so you'll hear the music in a different context. The extensive playlist below may help you track down the original in their full-length versions. I really hope you'll enjoy watching these -imaginary- clouds! For our eighth edition of the Equilibrisme Podcast Series, we proudly present Dr.Nojoke, with a rare vinyl set. Frank Bogdanowitz alias Dr. Nojoke is a producer and performer – his live sets continually bring new and unique sounds to the table, a combination of field-recordings, self-made sounds, and highly conceptual production that redefine the way we understand electronic music. A Berlin native and leader in directional minimal techno (or “clikno” as he describes it), Dr. Nojoke is a master of rethinking ordinary musicality and procuring new uses for the everyday. “Emma Robertson” CLIKNO Since 2005 Dr.Nojoke has been working on technoid sound-sculptures based on self-made field-recordings. He defines a deep, minimal, complex and groovy music, he calls Clikno. Always with an experimental approach in production Dr.Nojoke transforms acoustic sounds into highly technological music – reflecting the real world in an electronic sound. Dr.Nojoke has been releasing on a multitude of labels such as Pheek's imprint Archipel, Klangscheiben, Sleep is Commerical, Pluie/Noir, Destroy All Monsters, Goldmin Music, Minim.all, Autist, Resopal… In 2016 he founded his own music label CLIKNO, which started to put out vinyl editions in 2018. He did remixes for acts like Rosenstolz, Dinamoe (Rico Püstel), Pheek, David Last and D.Diggler as well as for the English Electro-poetress Caro Snatch, M_Ferri (alias Superlover), Sven Laux, Andrew Duke, Sebastian Albrecht, Andrés Marcos and got remixed by Cleymoore, Berk Offset, Marlene Magnoli, Alicia Hush, the Marx Trukker … In 2018 Dr.Nojoke launched CLIKNO as a vinyl-label for his own music productions. This beautiful mix was specially created for our record release party at Transit last December and re-imagined at home. We hope you enjoy! Thanks Dr.Nojoke , we love it! links: www.drnojoke.de http://www.clikno.com/

As I said in the previous post, there was so much good music this year, every year really, that I couldn't fit it all into one mix. So here is volume 2. This one focuses on modern classical/electro-acoustic music. The first track in the mix is from William Ryan Fritch's massive album - Deceptive Cadence - Music For Film Vol I & II, easily the best release of the year. It was just one of several albums put out by Lost Tribe Sound that are all phenomenal. Anybody who likes beautiful packaging should check out their stuff. 2019 saw some gorgeous sets from LTS. https://losttribesound.bandcamp.com/ Some of my other favorite releases of 2019 came from Whitelabrecs. They had a monster year putting out a ton of excellent albums. They started the year strong with Grønland by Glåsbird and Vihne by Jens Pauly and kept going all the way to Timecuts by Luis Miehlich and Lowlands by Jack Hyde. https://whitelabrecs.bandcamp.com/music Here's to more good music and more mixes in 2020, that is if the presidential campaign doesn't make me drive off a cliff. It's an impossible task to narrow down the multitude of ambient recordings released every year into a definitive "Best of" list. There's so much music out there that I'll never hear it all and what I do hear is hard to give the proper attention to. So many factors can influence a record making the list - where did a first hear it, what mood was I in, what other music did I listen to around it, did I use it in a mix, etc. Suffice it to say, this list is not definitive and is highly subjective. I will end up making two mixes from this list - this first one is more straight forward ambient and the next one will have a more modern classical/electro-acoustic tone. I split it into two mixes so that I didn't end up with a 4-hour mix. Ain't nobody got time for that! So here it is, my personal favs of 2019, in alphabetical order: BEST AMBIENT MUSIC OF 2019: 1. A Winged Victory for the Sullen - The Undivided Five [ninja tune] 2. Ann Annie - wander into 3. Anne Muller - Heliopause [erased tapes] 4. anthéne - asymmetry [whitelabrecs] 5. POOLcast 046 – Sven Laux After having presented mostly new faces in the last issues, it's time again to use POOLcast as a platform for our local community of musicians. We love to accompany the development of artists and their visions. That's why we've invited Sven Laux again for the September issue of POOLcast. He has undergone a remarkable transformation in his work in recent years. As an artist you are, like every human being, subject to constant change, this concerns your own work, your sense of self, your own personality and your social environment. If we look at the artist's pieces anachronistically and detached from the person itself, we could accuse the artists of indecision, but if we are able to place the works in the right temporal context, completely new perspectives open up for the viewer. Sven, who was about to set up his own label Seasides on Postcards when he last appeared on POOLcast, now has three wonderful CD releases in his catalogue and the fourth one is about to happen. Sven Laux is continuously working on his vision of the fusion of melodic ambient, emotional drones, fragmented acoustics and modern classical music. The mixtape that Sven made available to us was created a little more than two years ago and shows impressively that apparent indecisiveness often turns out to be exactly the opposite. At that time Sven was still well known from his Minimal Techno releases on relevant labels like 31337, UNOIKI and Sleep is Commercial, but already in this recording his future change seems to manifest itself in a magical way. Melodic fragments, emotional soundscapes, granular textures and a clear vision, which at that time might have been called indecision, but today is quite the contrary. Art is more than pure work. https://poolcast.bandcamp.com/track/poolcast-046-sven-laux https://soundcloud.com/thepoolberlin/poolcast-046-sven-laux https://www.mixcloud.com/ThePoolcasts/poolcast-046-sven-laux/ // Sven Laux https://soundcloud.com/sven-laux https://svenlaux.bandcamp.com/ https://www.facebook.com/svenlaux Seasides on Postcards https://soundcloud.com/seasides-on-postcards https://seasidesonpostcards.bandcamp.com/ https://www.facebook.com/seasidesonpostcards/ // The POOL Berlin https://facebook.com/thepoolberlin/ https://soundcloud.com/thepoolberlin/ https://poolcast.bandcamp.com/ https://mixcloud.com/ThePoolcasts/ https://pooltracks.bandcamp.com/ https://open.spotify.com/show/5YxJHKoPPflbj9NKleINUz https://podcasts.apple.com/de/podcast/poolcast/id1462173000 https://overcast.fm/itunes1462173000/poolcast https://pca.st/tC92 https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/the-pool-berlin/poolcast https://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cDovL2ZlZWRzLnNvdW5kY2xvdWQuY29tL3VzZXJzL3NvdW5kY2xvdWQ6dXNlcnM6MjA0NjQxNzEwL3NvdW5kcy5yc3M
The mix title, Radical Candor, comes from the (management) philosophy that argues that feedback (on behaviour) is most effective if it is 'challenging' but at the same time shows that you 'care'. I felt there was a resemblance: the mix is 'caring' at times but can also be quite 'challenging' to the listener. At least, that was my intention. Now you decide. --- originally published on Ambientblog --- A word of warning first. This is not an ambient mix intended to relax or create a calm atmosphere. Also, it is not a showcase with full album tracks. It is a 'create-your-own-movie' soundtrack with some rather intense climaxes. And 42 track fragments in less than one hour - almost none of those in full length: all tracks are cut-up, fragmented, edited, layered and re-assembled (but never altered sonically) - like creating a collage from torn pictures. This also means that none of the parts represents the artists' original intention (I hope they still can appreciate what I do here). For further exploration, the release details of the fragments are provided so you can check out the original full versions and support the artist wherever possible. The end of a year is a popular moment to release a (label) compilation. Sometimes to look back, sometimes to look ahead.... and sometimes just because it's compilation time. Here's an (incomplete!) overview of some recent compilations presenting hours (and more hours) of listening pleasure. VARIOUS ARTISTS - ILLUMINATIONS II Dronarivm kicks off with this New Year Charity Compilation. No less than 30 track and almost three hours of music, priced ridiculously low to begin with... but of course you will want to pay more because of the amount of music, ánd because the profits go to 4Paws for Ability, an organisation that 'enriches the lives of children with disabilities by training and placing quality, task-trained service dogs.' (You can also donate directly of course, but why would you when you're offered a batch of quality music in the process?) The thirty artists presented here show why Dronarivm has become one of the most important labels in the ambient/experimental electronic genre. It's an impressive array of which I will only mention a few names: Aaron Martin, Bruno Sanfilippo, Loscil, Jacaszek, Machinefabriek, Endless Melancholy, Legiac, Offthesky, Olan Mill, Sven Laux, Anne Chris Bakker, Antonymes, Giulio Aldinucci, Pleq, Hakobune, Pausal Chihei Hatakeyama. And that are just 17/30. Even more impressive is the fact that all these tracks are exclusive - they have not appeared on earlier releases before. So this is what we call a 'no-brainer'! If you missed the first (2017) edition of Illuminations with another 28 tracks, you can still download it. It is a Name-Your Price release, but I strongly suggest to double your donation for Illuminations II. Simply because. Illuminations II (The New Year 2018 charity compilation) by Various Artists VARIOUS ARTISTS - FROM HERE TO TRANQUILITY, VOL. 8: THE DARKENED PATH On a somewhat darker note, we find #8 in the From Here To Tranquility series on Silent Records, curated and founded by Kim Cascone. Not specifically an end-of-year release, by the way, but edition 8 in the From Here To Tranquility series. This edition 'addresses the pervasive darkness we find in the world today', and does so with 80 minutes of contemplative soundscapes with a retro-touch by Scott Gibbons, Kris Force, Chris Meloche, Dead Voices on Air, Michal Seta, Pragma, David Metcalfe, Legion Of Green Men, Aume, Meterpool, Mike Rooke and David Lee Myers. Not the most familiar names perhaps, and the music can be quite different in nature (a quiet atmospheric field recording track by Chris Meloche can easily be followed by a rather aggressive noise track from Dead Voices on Air), but you can simply count on Kim Cascone's experience in selecting quality sounds. From Here to Tranquility - Volume 8 (the darkened path) by Various Artists VARIOUS ARTISTS - STEEL - DRAGON'S EYE TWELFTH ANNIVERSARY Not exactly a year-in-retrospect compilation, but an album to celebrate the twelve years of existence since Yann Novak relaunched his father's record label Dragon's Eye Recordings. The 'steel' in the title is 'named after the traditional eleventh anniversary gift (due to miscalculation and a love for the cover art by Jake Muir)'. A 'variety of styles, processes, practices, techniques, and most importantly points of view' is presented in this Name-Your-Price download featuring unreleased tracks by artists that recently released work on the label. Such as: Steve Pacheco, Tobias Hellkvist, Robert Crouch, Yann Novak, Jake Muir, Fabio Perletta, Geneva Skeen, Mark Kate and wndfrm. 78 Minutes of sheer minimalist joy. Steel: Dragon's Eye Twelfth Anniversary by Various Artists VARIOUS ARTISTS - RUSTED TONE SAMPLER I Rusted Tone Recordings does not look back to 2017 because it did not exist in 2017. It is a new independent label, curated by James Armstrong, 'specialising in ambient, drone and experimental music'. Judged by this introduction sampler the label will definitely be worth keeping an eye on: it introduces artists that will be releasing albums on Rusted Tone in the coming year. Think: Darren Harper, James Osland, Wil Bolton, Green Kingdom, Spheruleus - along less familiar names like Gallery Six & Oblivia, Net, Kepier Widow, Saltings and Kevin Buchland. Suffices to say this introduction succeeds in raising interest for the label! This, too, is a Name-Your-Price download if you want. But please keep in mind that proceeds 'will go towards supporting physical releases and sustaining Rusted Tone Recordings.' Rusted Tone Recordings: Sampler Vol. 1 by Various Artists VARIOUS ARTISTS - GRENZWELLEN I A somewhat different beast (and with that I mean considerably less ambient) is this massive compilation supporting the German radio show Grenzwellen, hosted by Ecki Stieg and broadcasted on Radio Hannover. Grenzwellen started in 1987 so it exists for more than thirty years now! It can be heard every wednesday for three hours starting at 9 pm CET via the Radio Hannover livestream. But even if you can't listen to their show this compilation is a great introduction to the music that can be heard on this show. Almost 4 hours of all kinds of experimental/electronic music in a mix of well- and lesser-known artist. I won't mention them all, but here are just a few of the names that I recognise: Giulio Aldinucci, Gabi Delgado, Ulrich Schnauss, CEEYS, Marsen Jules Trio (with a 15 minute string version of Étoiles de la Nuit), Bersarin Quartett, Bartosz Dziadosz, Hecq, Arovane,Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Sven Laux, Sankt Otten, Markus Guentner, Richard Chartier, Hotel Neon. 31 Tracks, and most of them previously unreleased. Grenzwellen host and compilation curator Ecki Stieg advises to play the compilation in its entirety: "please listen in the order given. Don't use the random button!." Grenzwellen Eins by Grenzwellen VARIOUS ARTISTS - MUSIC FOR ELEVATORS And, while on the subject of massive compilation projects this one cannot stay unmentioned. Only recently I became aware of a series of (free download) releases by the Mahorka netlabel called "Music for Elevators." A nice reference to many ambient "Music for ..." releases, as well as to 'Elevator Music' - which is usually referring to anonymous 'Muzak'. The first edition of this series was released way back in 2002, followed by Vol. 2 in 2005, Vol. 3 in 2007, Vol. 4 in 2012. The three-part set Vol. 5, which is said to conclude the series, was released in 2017 (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3). You can still find the complete set online: the first four editions can be found on Archive.org (free downloads), the three-part Vol. 5 on Bandcamp (Name-Your-Price). So that is quite an impressive batch of unknown music to discover. Unknown - because in the tradition of netlabels, Mahorka presents the work of artists that are largely unknown - with the occasional exception depending on how 'deep' you are into the scene. "You are on board for a pushing all kinds of boundaries trip through what ambient music can be and what can be ambient music." 'Ambient' is not a very strict definition here, probably 'experimental electronic' would have been a more appropriate label. There are quite a few tracks that would probably scare the hell out of any ordinary citizen who got stuck in an elevator. But in a collection like this, everyone will find a lot of sounds to his/her liking! Music For Elevators Vol.5 (Part 1) by Various Artists

POOLcast 017 - Sven Laux We are in the middle of our second season and the year of 2017 is starting to transform. The days are getting longer and the shadows shorter. Grey becomes blue, brown turns into green and stiff becomes vivid, a change that cycles every year. But there are also transformations that aren’t frequently and obvious: The alterations, which happen in life - uncontrollable without a definable start or end. Sven Laux is going through one of these transformations. In his early years he was known for his minimal techno. His remarkable way of microsampling, his use of textures of glitches and cuts paired with rolling grooves became a trademark for him. With time passing by he increasingly made use of synth sounds, pads, chords and atmospheres. Then he reduced the beats, the first downtempo track was released. Sven played more and more with keys and synths. The first ambient and drone tracks appeared in his discography. He studied the structure of orchestral compositions and became obsessed with soundtracks. This led to the first sound work for trailers and even award winning films like Courage. It’s about time to take a closer look at his ongoing change. A year ago we invited Sven for an episode of POOLcast. And even in this past year you can clearly hear how his music changed. Back then there were drones and scapes, ambient music with clusters of experimental textures. Nowadays the transformation into a composer of soundtracks is nearly finished. The second POOLcast episode of Sven is full of soundscapes, pianos and strings, beautifully arranged. You are invited to witness this audible transformation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sven Laux http://svenlaux.com/ https://soundcloud.com/sven-laux https://www.facebook.com/svenlauxofficial/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The POOL Berlin - POOLcast http://thepoolberlin.de https://facebook.com/poolcastberlin/ https://poolcast.bandcamp.com/ https://soundcloud.com/thepoolberlin/ https://mixcloud.com/ThePoolcasts/

Born in Neubrandenburg, Germany, Laux started writing electronic music in 1998 after discovering a talent for meticulously sampling and looping audio. Now residing in Berlin, Sven Laux has done anything but conform. His unique take on music making has him sharing the company of artisans like Pheek, Ezekiel Honig and Marc Neyen. Laux has become notorious for manipulating foundsounds and employing layers of field recordings in his work. In a discography that stretches back to 2006, there remains a prevalent underlying passion for the obscure. Get Physical is proud to present the latest instalment in their long running and influential Body Language DJ mix series. Previous volumes have featured musical luminaries such as Dixon, Matthew Dear and Modeselektor and now joining their ranks is the much lauded production talent that is Tim Green with a mix that includes 17 stunning tracks, some exclusives from Green himself and some special edits. By now Green is well established within the house and techno elite and has proved himself as a truly talent producer with real eclecticism. He has been responsible for massive club anthems on labels like Cocoon alongside moving and introspective works on My Favorite Robot Records and for his first commercially available mix he brings this all emcompassing outlook to bear, laying out an absorbing, complete and coherent vision of contemporary dance music. The mix itself is seamlessly constructed drawing on Green’s time headlining at leading global clubs such as fabric, Space ibize, Womb & Watergate. Over the course of 72 minutes Green builds in masterful layers, carefully notching up through the gears with smooth mixes and perfect sequencing. It all starts with the delicate deep house of Sven Laux, before exploring chilly and autumnal tech that is full of brooding menace from the likes of Landslide and Fiakun Team. Lush pianos and patient chords add a musical feel to the compelling grooves, and vocals, too, help colour things and add a real sense of personality and charm. Tracks from Max Cooper, S.K.A.M. and Dan Berkson & James What all prove Green knows where to look for electronic nuance and make for a slick and engaging mid section that is as fluid and free flowing as you will find. The latter half of the mix gets increasingly unhinged and tough, with crisp tech and churning technoid grooves making you get sweaty before trippy and brilliantly weird stuff from Green himself as well as a classic James Holden joint close things down in meaningful style. This is an expertly curated and mixed selection of fresh electronic sounds from across the electronic spectrum, all stitched into one essential sonic journey.

Avenue Red podcast 007 is an all-vinly mix of deep dubby techno from Gavin Marks who runs the Chicago-based MOSHItaka label, which has just had it's first vinyl release in 2013 with the sublimely accomplished Road To River EP from Moscow dub techno artist Doyeq. MOSHItaka is also a well established podcast with the MOSHImix series, which has featured the talents of well-respected names in the dub techno/deep techno scene including Martin Schulte, Anton Kubikov, Alessandro Crimi (who did our previous episode) and Sven Laux to name a few. A series that has got our attention for sure! We were very pleased that amongst this fresh selection Gavin included some very special older tracks too, with Bvdub's blissfully ambient "Wish I Was Here" from 2008 flowing into "Floatation Verb" by Sven Weisemann, which was originally released on Smallfish in 2008 also. You can never go wrong with the inclusion of a Rhythm & Sound track either - timeless, just the way we like it! @gavin_marks @moshitaka ===== 01 Unknown Artist - Toolwaxx 01 (B1) // Toolwaxx (2013) 02 Tomas Rubeck - Plec // Kina Music (2013) 03 Neurotron - Neurotron 005 (A1) // Neurotron (2013) 04 Recondite - Waldluft // Trolldans (2013) 05 Anton Kubikov - Chords // Pro-Tez (2013) 06 Leif - NDE // Sudden Drop (2013) 07 Bvdub - Wish I Was Here // Millions Of Moments (2008) 08 Sven Weisemann - Floatation Verb // Mojuba (2013) 09 Van Bonn - Baumgartner // Telrae (2013) 10 Rhythm & Sound - Never Tell You (w/ Tikiman) // Burial Mix (1996) 11 Ion Ludwig - Ten Canoes // Eklo (2013) 12 Francis Harris - Picture Us // Scissor And Thread (2012)
