What people are saying: "A Natural History of Empty Lots" is the best and most interesting book I've ever read about the spaces we often overlook. Christopher Brown comes to these places with a deep curiosity and understanding of both human and nonhuman history. An instant classic.” Jeff VanderMeer, New York Times bestselling author."Instantly hypnotic, A Natural History of Empty Lots invites you to see the ‘waste' spaces of the Anthropocene for what they are: a resource that contains more than itself. Christopher Brown is a complete and literate denizen of these zones. His calm, clever writing shows a real care for the natural world, and a real feel for the deep worth of the brownfield liminal.” M. John Harrison, Goldsmiths Prize-winning author of Wish I Was Here and Climbers. https://christopherbrown.com/http://www.yourlotandparcel.org

Phillips has a long-standing relationship with Madonna, with collaborations including photo shoots, music videos and designing tour costumes for six world tours over the past two decades. She has been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Costume Design three times, for James Mangold's Walk the Line (2005), Madonna's directorial debut, W.E. (2011), and for Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019). Phillips has also received a two BAFTA Award nominations for Tom Ford's A Single Man (2009) and Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Her film career also includes Tom Ford's Nocturnal Animals (2016), Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014) and Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017), James Mangold's Girl, Interrupted (1999) and 3:10 to Yuma (2007), John Cameron Mitchell's Hedwig And the Angry Inch (2001), Mark Romanek's One Hour Photo(2002), and Milos Forman's The People Vs. Larry Flynt (1996). In between film and music projects, Phillips works as a freelance fashion editor and stylist, collaborating with photographers for publications such as Italian Vogue, V Magazine, Harper's Bazaar, German & Spanish Vogueand W Magazine. She continuously challenges herself by taking on projects that explore new expressions of her creativity. In 2018, she made her New York City Metropolitan opera debut, designing Nico Muhly's opera, Marnie. Miuccia Prada selected Phillips for her Iconoclasts project; to curate installations for the brands flagship stores in London and Beijing which included a short fashion film for the brand, which Phillips wrote and directed, called Passages. Her friend Alessandro Michele, Creative Director of GUCCI commissioned her to create content for a special issue of A Magazine he guest edited and to style a brand film directed by Gia Coppola. She has also collaborated on special projects with Van Cleef and Arpels, Cartier, Valentino and Swarovski. Phillips was an inaugural member of the TIMES UP coalition and was asked by Reese Witherspoon to design its logo. Lawrence Sher, ASC,is an American cinematographer and film director, best known for comedy films such as Garden State, The Dictator, and The Hangover series, frequently collaborating with directors Todd Phillips and Zach Braff.[ He made his directorial debut with Father Figures, which began a wide theatrical release on December 22, 2017, by Warner Bros. Pictures. He was nominated for an Academy Award and BAFTA Award for Best Cinematography for the 2019 film Joker, directed by Phillips. As cinematographer of the 2009 film The Hangover, Sher described how a scene early in the movie shows the main characters on the roof of their hotel overlooking a stereotypical shot of the Las Vegas Strip; Sher indicated that he had tried to evoke the behind-the-scenes Vegas—after the characters wake up the following morning—by shooting a scene behind the hotels where the real action takes place. Actor Bradley Cooper credited Sher's visual style with enhancing the film's comedy, noting how Sher has "a great eye, a lot of energy and he just knows what's funny" and that "Some guys just can't shoot comedies, but Larry knows exactly what he's doing." With the success of Zach Braff's Kickstarter, Sher worked on Braff's 2014 feature, Wish I Was Here. In January 2020, Sher was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his work on the movie Joker, but lost to Roger Deakins for 1917.

Zach fell in love with the arts at an early age, booking one of his first on-screen roles in Woody Allen's MANHATTAN MURDER MYSTERY and later cutting his teeth in production while PA'ing on music videos in the late 90s. He shares how the stars aligned to cast his first choices in every role on GARDEN STATE and what the impetus was to write the script in the first place. We later learn how Zach storyboards his films in prep and how he's improved his ability to delegate during production by empowering his crew to solve creative problems. Zach also reflects on his experience crowdfunding WISH I WAS HERE and the challenges of servicing 50,000 backers while actually making the film. Wish I Was Here—the new book by today's guest M. John Harrison—is a work which resists description. Monique Roffey goes for “a deep dive into the back-and-forth, up-down sideways mind of a true genius”, Helen Macdonald plumps for “an archaeology of fragments that shivers with wholeness” while Jonathan Coe turns interrogative, asking “Is it a memoir? Is it a handbook for writers?” However the book may best be described—if the book may best be described—the fact that it appeals to writers as diverse as Coe, Roffey and Macdonald—not to mention William Gibson, who described Wish I Was Here as “hilarious and haunting”—shows not just the range of minds that M. John Harrison appeals to, but also the pervasive, if ineffable, nature of his concerns.Buy Wish I Was Here here: https://www.shakespeareandcompany.com/product/5998501/harrison-m-john-wish-i-was-hereM. Zach Braff: Hollywood actor and director on his latest exploration of grief, loss and recovery, A Good Person

Scrubs and Garden State star Zach Braff returns with a new film, having recently written, directed and produced A Good Person. This dramatic journey of healing and self-forgiveness stars Morgan Freeman, Molly Shannon, and Florence Pugh, who leads the film as Allison- an aspiring musician on the road to recovery after a deadly accident. Florence Pugh's acting career is on a hot streak, having wowed audiences with her impressive performances in Little Women, Black Widow, The Wonder and Don't Worry Darling. Zach Braff is among her many fans, describing her to ZB's Francesca Rudkin as “One of the most extraordinary young actors we have on the planet today.” “I think it just goes back to that old-school Hollywood star. With a star, there's light emanating from a person's center. It isn't just that Florence is beautiful, it isn't just that she's an extraordinary actress, it's that she has this star quality that we see in certain people on the silver screen.” Zach Braff crafted A Good Person with Florence Pugh in mind from the beginning. The pair were dating throughout the Covid-19 lockdown period and a mutual friend dying from the virus inspired Zach Braff to write about loss and grief and pain and recovery. “I wrote this for her. She liked it- thank goodness- and then she actually wrote the songs herself that the character sings in the movie. It was a collaborative process from the get-go. And then Morgan Freeman came aboard and then it all got very real.” A Good Person also stars Morgan Freeman. Zach Braff and Morgan Freeman have history together, having worked together on the 2017 heist comedy Going in Style, also directed by Braff. Despite this, Zach Braff told Francesca Rudkin that directing the Hollywood legend was “intimidating.” “I still had to give myself pep talks in the mirror each morning to not be intimidated by him. But he and I have a really nice banter and he trusts me. Even though he is a stoic man and can be intimidating because he's such a living legend, he really let me push him.” Zach Braff has clearly established himself as a skilled director from the early stages of his career. He directed several episodes of Scrubs, Garden State, Wish I Was Here and even racked up award nominations for directing the Apple TV+ hit Ted Lasso. Zach Braff explained to Francesca how his experience in front of the camera inspired him behind the scenes. “I think, stereotypically, actors like actors-turned-directors, because they know what it's like to receive bad direction, they know what doesn't work, they know what's confusing. They know no one wants to be told- it's this, or you're wrong. Because that's not a way to create art together.” A Good Person is another example of Zach Braff using his life experience to influence on-screen projects, as the film was inspired by his own feelings of loss and recovering after tragedies. Despite these themes, Braff makes sure to offset the subject matter with intermittent humour. “I think you need to have humor as a release. And in my own life, that's how I felt. I felt that when we were going through stuff in my own personal life, we felt so happy when we would make a joke and there would be a humorous release. It was like letting steam out of an engine.” What's next for Zach Braff's creative pursuits? Despite having shifted his focus to directing and writing, Zach Braff has made it clear to Francesca Rudkin he doesn't want to give up on acting either. “I'm pursuing acting and I continue to pursue acting. But I certainly love directing a lot, I get a lot of joy out of it. It's extraordinarily stressful though, so I think for my own mental health, I can't do it that often.” A Good Person is coming to cinemas in New Zealand on May 18th. Wish I Was Here was supposed to be a heartwarming tale of a struggling Los Angeles family but ends up being a R rated family film; if that is even possible? Zach Braff is the writer and director and even actor of this film and believe it or not this film was funded by a kickstarter (crowdfunding project). A 35-year-old father (Aidan) of two played by Zach Braff is struggling to be an actor in L.A. while his wife, Sarah works a tedious data job. Aidan relies on his father in-laws monetary assistance so that the kids Tucker and Grace can attend an Orthodox Jewish day school. Money is tight, and life becomes hard as Gabe (father-in-law) reveals he has cancer and the kids are then forced to be home-schooled. Through teaching them about life his way, Aidan gradually discovers some of the parts of himself he couldn't find. Welcome back. We hope you're staying healthy. This week the Nerds invited Dev-i-Boy on again. He'll be joining us for the next while.First up is a discussion about Indiana Jones 5. Can Indy swing himself back into relevance for a new generation? Not if COVID-19 has anything to say about it. Indiana Jones 5 has been pushed back again due to the pandemic. The Nerds are hoping Actual Cannibal Shia LaBeouf doesn't make another appearance as Indy's son, but we'd be ok with him appearing as a cannibal tribesman. This of course leads into a discussion on Disney's other properties, including the notorious Pirates of the Caribbean and Jungle Cruise. This looks like a rough year for Disney.Dev-i-Boy has heard that Russians are behind everyone's favourite YouTube channel, Five Minute Crafts. In a story reminiscent of bad Cold War fiction, Russian propaganda is slipped into innocuous seeming YouTube videos. Now we just need a team of teenagers to sneak into the secret Russian video studio lab and uncover their plot.Activision has pulled off a major win in court against the maker of the Humvee. Modern warfare needs modern weapons, and the US courts have ruled in favour of realism over licensing fees. Finally, DJ and Dev-i-Boy can't handle the knowledge. An Australian lizard joins the tiny group of reptiles that both lay eggs and give live birth. This revelation is too much for them to handle though, so we move on to the games of the week.Professor and DJ play Generation Zero, a game about Swedish battle mechs and robot dogs that want to kill you. It's buggy, but generally a good experience. Dev-i played LoZ: Wind Waker again but breaks into a new dimension in VR Chat. Of course, he picked an anime girl avatar. Many of his works are found in the Vatican Palace, where the frescoed Raphael Rooms were the central, and the largest, work of his career. The best known work is The School of Athens in the Vatican Stanza della Segnatura. After his early years in Rome, much of his work was executed by his workshop from his drawings, with considerable loss of quality. He was extremely influential in his lifetime, though outside Rome his work was mostly known from his collaborative printmaking. His career falls naturally into three phases and three styles, first described by Giorgio Vasari: his early years in Umbria, then a period of about four years (1504–1508) absorbing the artistic traditions of Florence, followed by his last hectic and triumphant twelve years in Rome, working for two Popes and their close associates. He died from fever at the age of 37 in Rome, Papal States.6 April 1944 - Rose O'Neill - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rose_O%27NeillRose Cecil O'Neill, American cartoonist, illustrator, artist, and writer. She built a successful career as a magazine and book illustrator and, at a young age, became the best-known and highest- paid female commercial illustrator in the United States. O' Neill earned a fortune and international fame by creating the Kewpie, the most widely known cartoon character until Mickey Mouse. Her Kewpie cartoons, which made their debut in a 1909 issue of Ladies' Home Journal, were later manufactured as bisque dolls in 1912 by J. D. Kestner, a German toy company, followed by composition material and celluloid versions. The dolls were wildly popular in the early twentieth century and are considered to be one of the first mass-marketed toys in the United States. Their name, "Kewpie", derives from Cupid, the Roman god of love. According to O'Neill, she became obsessed with the idea of the cherubic characters, to the point that she had dreams about them: "I thought about the Kewpies so much that I had a dream about them where they were all doing acrobatic pranks on the coverlet of my bed. One sat in my hand." She described them as "a sort of little round fairy whose one idea is to teach people to be merry and kind at the same time". O'Neill also wrote several novels and books of poetry, and was active in the women's suffrage movement. She was for a time the highest-paid female illustrator in the world upon the success of the Kewpie dolls. She died from heart failure at the age of 69 in Springfield, Missouri. 6 April 2003 - Anita Borg - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anita_Borg American computer scientist. She founded the Institute for Women and Technology and the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing. In 1997, Borg founded the Institute for Women and Technology (now the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology). Two important goals behind the founding of the organization were to increase the representation of women in technical fields and to enable the creation of more technology by women. The Institute was created to be an experimental R&D organization focusing on increasing the impact of women on technology and increasing the impact of technology on the world's women. It ran a variety of programs to increase the role of technology, build the pipeline of technical women, and ensure that women's voices affected technological developments. Borg passionately believed in working for greater representation of technical women. Her goal was to have 50% representation for women in computing by 2020. She strove for technical fields to be places where women would be equally represented at all levels of the pipeline, and where women could impact, and benefit from, technology. She died from a brain tumour at the age of 54 in Sonoma, California. Famous Birthdays6 April 1958 - Graeme Base - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graeme_BaseAuthor and artist of picture books. Events of Interest 6 April 1896 – In Athens, the opening of the first modern Olympic Games is celebrated, 1,500 years after the original games are banned by Roman emperor Theodosius I. - https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/first-modern-olympic-gamesOn April 6, 1896, the Olympic Games, a long-lost tradition of ancient Greece, are reborn in Athens 1,500 years after being banned by Roman Emperor Theodosius I. At the opening of the Athens Games, King Georgios I of Greece and a crowd of 60,000 spectators welcomed athletes from 13 nations to the international competition. In Athens, 280 participants from 13 nations competed in 43 events, covering track-and-field, swimming, gymnastics, cycling, wrestling, weightlifting, fencing, shooting, and tennis. All the competitors were men, and a few of the entrants were tourists who stumbled upon the Games and could sign up. The track-and-field events were held at the Panathenaic Stadium, which was originally built in 330 B.C. and restored for the 1896 Games. Americans won nine out of 12 of these events. The 1896 Olympics also featured the first marathon competition, which followed the 25-mile route run by a Greek soldier who brought news of a victory over the Persians from Marathon to Athens in 490 B.C. In 1924, the marathon was standardized at 26 miles and 385 yards. Appropriately, a Greek, Spyridon Louis, won the first marathon at the 1896 Athens Games.6 April 1909 - Robert Peary and Matthew Henson become the first people to reach the North Pole; Peary's claim has been disputed because of failings in his navigational ability. - https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/pearys-expedition-reaches-north-poleOn April 6, 1909, American explorer Robert Peary accomplishes a long elusive dream, when he, assistant Matthew Henson and four Eskimos reach what they determine to be the North Pole. Decades after Peary’s death, however, navigational errors in his travel log surfaced, placing the expedition in all probability a few miles short of its goal. In 1908, the pair travelled to Ellesmere Island by ship and in 1909 raced across hundreds of miles of ice to reach what they calculated as latitude 90 degrees north on April 6, 1909. Although their achievement was widely acclaimed, Dr. Frederick A. Cook challenged their distinction of being the first to reach the North Pole. A former associate of Peary, Cook claimed he had already reached the pole by dogsled the previous year. A major controversy followed, and in 1911 the U.S. Congress formally recognized Peary’s claim. In recent years, further studies of the conflicting claims suggest that neither expedition reached the exact North Pole, but that Peary and Henson came far closer, falling perhaps 30 miles short. On May 3, 1952, U.S. Lieutenant Colonel Joseph O. Fletcher of Oklahoma stepped out of a plane and walked to the precise location of the North Pole, the first person to undisputedly do so.6 April 1917 - Americans declares war on Germany - https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/america-enters-world-war-iTwo days after the U.S. Senate voted 82 to 6 to declare war against Germany, the U.S. House of Representatives endorses the declaration by a vote of 373 to 50, and America formally enters World War I. Apart from an Anglophile element urging early support for the British and an anti-Tsarist element sympathising with Germany's war against Russia, US public opinion reflected that of the president: the sentiment for neutrality was particularly strong among Irish Americans, German Americans, and Scandinavian Americans, as well as among church leaders and among women in general. On the other hand, even before World War I had broken out, American opinion had been overall more negative toward Germany than toward any other country in Europe. Over time, especially after reports of atrocities in Belgium in 1914 and following the sinking of the passenger liner RMS Lusitania in 1915, American citizens increasingly came to see Germany as the aggressor in Europe. While the country was at peace, American banks made huge loans to Britain and France, which were used mainly to buy munitions, raw materials, and food from across the Atlantic. Wilson made minimal preparations for a land war but he did authorise a major ship-building program for the United States Navy. The president was narrowly re-elected in 1916 on an anti-war ticket.6 April 1974 - The Swedish pop band ABBA wins the Eurovision Song Contest with the song "Waterloo", launching their international career. - https://www.mylifetime.com/she-did-that/april-6-1974-abba-won-the-eurovision-song-contest-for-waterloo-launching-their-international-careerSongwriters and musicians Ulvaeus and Andersson first met in 1966. However, it was in 1969 when the seeds of the soon-to-be Swedish supergroup were planted when Björn met his fiancée, Fältskog, and Benny met his fiancée, Lyngstad. Ulvaeus and Andersson knew how to write contagious pop hits. However, Fältskog and Lyngstad’s beautiful harmonies were integral to the global chart-topping ABBA sound. After “Waterloo” won the 19th edition of the Eurovision song competition, the winning tune reached the No. 1 spot on the UK chart and became a top ten hit in the US on the Billboard Hot 100. “Waterloo” sold six million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling singles of all time.Follow us on Facebook - Page - https://www.facebook.com/NerdsAmalgamated/ - Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/440485136816406/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/NAmalgamated Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/6Nux69rftdBeeEXwD8GXrS iTunes - https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/top-shelf-nerds/id1347661094 RSS - http://www.thatsnotcanonproductions.com/topshelfnerdspodcast?format=rssInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/nerds_amalgamated/General Enquiries Email - Nerds.Amalgamated@gmail.comRate & Review us on Podchaser - https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/nerds-amalgamated-623195

Mike Tyson is back and badder than ever, at least at pronunciation, in the animated Mike Tyson Mysteries. Bawston gets a new sitcom in The McCarthys, depicting the life and times of a sports-mad family with one gay guy and no teddy. Zach Braff continues to struggle to shake JD in Wish I Was Here, where a single raised eyebrow can trigger a laugh, or not. We kinda forgot Halloween so it behoves us to make it up with Babadook, an Australian chiller about a mum, a son, and a book that won't go away. Shona thought she had the boys whipped into shape but is left shocked and appalled at Mike's heretofore unknown tractor fetish.

Avenue Red podcast 007 is an all-vinly mix of deep dubby techno from Gavin Marks who runs the Chicago-based MOSHItaka label, which has just had it's first vinyl release in 2013 with the sublimely accomplished Road To River EP from Moscow dub techno artist Doyeq. MOSHItaka is also a well established podcast with the MOSHImix series, which has featured the talents of well-respected names in the dub techno/deep techno scene including Martin Schulte, Anton Kubikov, Alessandro Crimi (who did our previous episode) and Sven Laux to name a few. A series that has got our attention for sure! We were very pleased that amongst this fresh selection Gavin included some very special older tracks too, with Bvdub's blissfully ambient "Wish I Was Here" from 2008 flowing into "Floatation Verb" by Sven Weisemann, which was originally released on Smallfish in 2008 also. You can never go wrong with the inclusion of a Rhythm & Sound track either - timeless, just the way we like it! @gavin_marks @moshitaka ===== 01 Unknown Artist - Toolwaxx 01 (B1) // Toolwaxx (2013) 02 Tomas Rubeck - Plec // Kina Music (2013) 03 Neurotron - Neurotron 005 (A1) // Neurotron (2013) 04 Recondite - Waldluft // Trolldans (2013) 05 Anton Kubikov - Chords // Pro-Tez (2013) 06 Leif - NDE // Sudden Drop (2013) 07 Bvdub - Wish I Was Here // Millions Of Moments (2008) 08 Sven Weisemann - Floatation Verb // Mojuba (2013) 09 Van Bonn - Baumgartner // Telrae (2013) 10 Rhythm & Sound - Never Tell You (w/ Tikiman) // Burial Mix (1996) 11 Ion Ludwig - Ten Canoes // Eklo (2013) 12 Francis Harris - Picture Us // Scissor And Thread (2012)
