What's the point of all the trend reports? What's the point of trends? And how do you use trends anyway? Matt Klein is Director of Strategy at sparks & honey but he's also into cultural theory and cyber psychology. Recently, he rounded up nineteen trends from over thirty trend reports and I gave him nineteen minutes to discuss them while reminiscing about the incredible Japanese obstacle course television show Takeshi's Castle.    We discuss the truth wars, reworking work, mindfulness, soft activism, the tranquil web, and why–like many brand essences–trend names sound like perfume ads from Paris. We discuss under which circumstances retracting decades-old articles is worth the time. We also chat about why LinkenIn is underrated (yes, really) and special journal issues are overrated. A more specific list of topics and links: We play a game of "overated/underated", in which Dan has a list of stuff that he asks James whether these things are overrated or underated (or appropiated rated) Why LinkedIn is underated Graphical abstracts are underrated Online conferences are underrated Authors should have the chance to wildly speculate (as long as it's marked as wild speculation) Sourdough bread is so gorgeous that even hipsters can't ruin it Special journal themes are overrated Should we bother putting the energy into retracting old studies? Opposite Attractions: A Theme Park Design Show

This week, we discuss some of the insanity at this year's IAAPA conference in Orlando before setting about giving our very own Epic Universe it's own dangerous transportation systems. First up, Jim creates an in-park monorail-ish contraption that just so happens to routinely derail around the load/unload stations, leading to some harrowing balancing acts as guests try (and possibly fail) to make it to their next destination without falling to the sidewalks below. Meanwhile, outside the park, Scottye has instituted a guest proving ground to show that you have the fortitude to spend the day in a theme park that will most definitely cause bodily harm and/or death. Presumably you do not need a ticket to get to the turnstiles themselves, but you might need good insurance. Next week it's our season finale! Stay tuned!
