On episode 247 of the AwardsWatch podcast, AwardsWatch Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade and Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello take a look at the newest announcements from the Toronto International Film Festival and New York Film Festival, changes to the Gotham Awards and the kickoff of International Feature Film Oscar submissions. Beginning with the TIFF announcements of new Gala and Special Presentations, we look into the heavy Venice to TIFF crossover with titles like Babygirl, Queer and The Brutalist (all skipping Telluride) as well as the 'Canadian Premiere' of Jason Reitman's Saturday Night, detailing the 90 minutes leading up to the first ever episode of NBC's Saturday Night Live's debut in 1975. Toronto will also get the world premiere of On Swift Horses, with Jacob Elordi, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Diego Calva, which appears to be its sole major fest showing. We then venture into today's NYFF Spotlight additions, including A Real Pain, Emilia Pérez and Maria. We talk about studio strategies and the paths festivals can create for determining awards contenders and how flying a bit under the radar, like Netflix is doing this year, becomes a vehicle for audience discovery. Next we move to the 2024 Gotham Awards, which announced this week the introduction of two new categories (Best Director and the return of Breakthrough Performer) as well as the rules that come with each of them. Finally, the submissions for the International Feature Film Oscar have started to roll in with Ireland's Kneecap, Austria's The Devil's Bath and Latvia's animated film Flow as the first out of the gate. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 45m. We will be back next week on this show for our Telluride Film Festival preview and predictions and on the main show to talk about Alien: Romulus, the state of blockbusters and more. And keep your eyes out for the Thursday drops of Director Watch episodes, which kicks off its Terence Malick series this week. Till then, let's get into it. In their discussion of the 1973 film BADLANDS, Christopher and Eric wrestle with their own belief in artistic freedom while confronting a dramatized version of real life crimes that essentially rewrites history in its pursuit of artistic license. The directorial debut of American cinema icon Terence Malick changes the names to protect not just the innocent, but the guilty as well. While the movie claims to be inspired by the real life killing spree of Charles Starkweather and Carol Fugate (the reason we chose it for the pairing), their well-documented acts of sadism, torture and mutilation are excised, offering up a romanticized vision of two lonely outcasts whose crimes were mostly born out of misunderstandings and self-defense. Do filmmakers have more of a responsibility to the real life source material than was shown here? How reigned in should an artist feel by the facts of their source of inspiration? Christopher and Eric are only sure of one thing. Their final installment of Midwest Mayhem is one of their most provocative episodes yet.

Midwest Mayhem departs the big and dirty city and heads to the bleak countryside for its second true crime pairing, the disturbing story of Charles Starkweather and Carol Fugate, two young killers whose gruesome crimes shocked a nation and inspired numerous film versions in the years that followed. In THE REAL 'NATURAL BORN KILLER', CHARLES STARKWEATHER (BORN TO KILL), available to stream on the Our Life You Tube Channel, we're given a by the numbers retelling of a horrifying killing spree that crossed the great plains of the Midwest. But Eric hears a story the producers aren't telling, the tale of a young woman who used as her weapon of choice, not just a gun, but a man desperate for her love and approval to exact her adolescent fantasies of revenge. We will complete our true crime pairing on our next episode when your hosts serve up a 1970's art house director's dramatic interpretation of these very crimes — Terence Malick's BADLANDS.

In the book, Thomas looks at four different artists—Czeslaw Milosz, Terence Malick, Marilynne Robinson, and Annie Dillard—as a way of exploring the doctrine of creation. Thomas practices patient, careful engagements with these artists, asking all along the way how their “lyric thinking” might enrich theological reflection. It's a fascinating book and I think you'll really enjoy our conversation. Thomas Gardner is Alumni Distinguished Professor Emeritus of English at Virginia Tech.

The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

As one of the most acclaimed and influential producers of the modern era, Daniel Lanois helmed iconic albums for everyone from Bob Dylan and Neil Young to U2 and Peter Gabriel. As a prolific and critically acclaimed songwriter, he's composed scores for Oscar-winning films and blockbuster video games in addition to releasing more than a dozen genre-bending solo records. Rolling Stone declared that his “unmistakable fingerprints are all over an entire wing of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame”. Daniel's own personal point of view informed and influenced a generation of music that still continues to resonate deeply today. Lanois is a searcher. He's perpetually on the hunt for something else - trying to squeeze out another drop from the atmosphere. Which is how, this week, as he turns 71 years old, Daniel Lanois is releasing Player, Piano, his first project of instrumental piano music. The compositions are concise but highly textured - it's a series of exotic instrumental performances and was recorded at Lanois' studio in Toronto - a former Buddhist temple- with the help of his co-producer Dangerous Wayne Lorenz.  Daniel and I spoke recently about his early development in Canada and how it influenced his work, his ongoing creative relationship with Brian Eno, why he likes to travel for work, his attraction to melancholy, projects with U2, Peter Gabriel, Brian Blade, Brian Eno, Rick James (yes, Rick James), Neil Young, Terence Malick, when to use the word “we”, the importance of silence, reconnecting with innocence, his production technique of turning “garnishing into a devotion” and why “contemporary work has more to do with vision” than with technology. www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.wbgo.org/studios

Lovable Losers is this weeks theme.  "Better Off Dead" (1985) is a favorite of Adam's childhood, but a very disappointed Matt gave one of his worst reviews. Adam Sandler does his Adam Sandler thing in P.T. Anderson's odd romantic comedy, "Punch Drunk Love" (2002), but with a better script and director. While both M&A liked it, they questioned the romance. Next, First time directors with Terence Malick's "Badlands" (1973) and Christopher Nolan's "Following" (1998).Thanks for listening!Did we get something wrong? Climb aboard for a one-way trip down the river of striking images, dream-like sequences, and too many meaningful looks. LAURA DUNN is a filmmaker based in Austin Texas who directed a documentary called THE UNFORESEEN, as well as a more recent documentary which is the focus of our conversation: LOOK & SEE: A PORTRAIT OF WENDELL BERRY. The film is available on Netflix and I can't recommend it enough. Laura and Wendell have a similar approach to their work, in that they are not putting themselves out there as a personality to shine brighter than the content of the work itself. Look & See isn't merely a biopic with a message, but it's capturing the essence of a person, in this case a giant of the written word, someone who is as illusive as he is influential. You will hear me try (and fail) to persuade Laura to get her two executive producers - Terence Malick and Robert Redford - to come on the show. You will also hear street noise, chirping birds, and a chatty toddler in the background (Laura conducted this phone conversation while walking her 2 year old to sleep). You will also hear the conviction of an artist who is using her chosen medium - film - to ask essential questions about the nature of life as we experience it, and all the contradictions and vulnerability that comes from such an inquisition. Laura certainly embodies a notable quote by Berry that goes: "when we are making our art, we are also making our lives. and I'm sure the reverse is equally true". Terence Malick made his mark with his debut film Badlands. It has the appearance of a Bonnie and Clyde-esque story where two young lovers go on the run while leaving violence in their wake. However, Malick chooses not to focus on the violence, but on the quiet characterization of these young souls and as they wander through America establishing their own sense of self-reliance and responsibility.    Terrence Malick's Five 1) Badlands 2) Days of Heaven 3) The Thin Red Line 4) The New World 5) The Tree of Life   –Leave us your thoughts on this movie at TheArtImmortal.com –Subscribe to Eric’s video game YouTube channel, Constant Diversion –Listen to Austin’s other podcast, The Immortals.   Twitter iTunes YouTube   Join us next Friday for their review of Days of Heaven.  Artwork by Ray Martindale Theme Song by Adam Lord

Writer and broadcaster Jonathan Meades's fascination with architecture began on a school trip to Marsh Court in Stockbridge, Hampshire - designed by that great architect of English Country Houses Edwin Lutyens. Subsequently, in a broadcasting career which spans 40 years, he has written and performed in more than 50 television shows on a wide range of topographical subjects: from shacks to garden cities, to buildings associated with vertigo; from beer and pigs, to the architecture of Hitler and Stalin. He was also a food critic for 15 years, winning the coveted Glenfiddich Award in 1999, and has written three novels and a memoir: "Encyclopedia of Myself". His latest television series, "Bunkers, Brutalism and Bloody-mindedness", was screened on BBC 4 in February. He now lives in the iconic Corbusier building, Cité Radieuse in Marseille - and his musical choices reflect his adopted country's love of chanson: French singer / songwriter Barbara's "Ma Plus Belle Histoire d'Amour" features, as does Jacques Brel's Mijn Vlakke Land. Film was not only Jonathan Meades's chosen career; his love of cinema also provided him with a rich musical education. Among his musical choices are Hans Werner Henze's soundtrack to the Alain Resnais film Muriel, and The Aquarium, from Saint-Saëns's Carnival of the Animals, which Terence Malick used in his ground breaking film Days of Heaven.
