Raised in a musical family, Dan studied a Bachelor of Music at the prestigious Queensland Conservatorium in Brisbane, before relocating to Melbourne. He then attained a Masters of Marketing to further his understanding of the financial and business aspects of the music industry. Dan currently resides in Los Angeles, USA. He has toured extensively in Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Europe as well as in the USA, Asia, and Canada, and has worked with artists from all over the world. He prides himself on his impeccable audio skills, logistics and organisational vision and excellent people and time management skills. Dan regularly works, and is comfortable in every venue, from small bars to major outdoor festivals and prestigious theatres. This has included Reading and Leeds Festivals (UK), Pukkelpop Festival (BEL), Summer Breeze (GER), Deichbrand Festival (GER), and Splendour in The Grass, Falls Festival, Laneway Festival and Download Festival in Australia. He has worked with bands including Taking Back Sunday, Deafheaven, Russian Circles, Rolo Tomassi, and Nothing as well as major Australian acts including Hockey Dad, Dune Rats, DZ Deathrays, The Smith Street Band, Ruby Fields and Clowns. These days the East Bay's waterfront is lined with parks, restored wetlands, marinas, and beaches, but for most of the twentieth century this shoreline was a dirty, dangerous wasteland. Factories stretching from Emeryville to Richmond treated the San Francisco Bay as a garbage bin. The habit of using the Bay as a dump was so common in Berkeley that the city legitimized the practice by creating a massive landfill on its western border in 1923. Beneath the idyllic grassy hills of Cesar Chavez Park and the bird-filled marshes of McLaughlin Eastshore State Seashore lay hidden mountains of trash. The transformation of this area from a leaky dump into a beautiful site for recreation and nature, a controversial process that unfolded over several decades, has been well-documented. Less has been said about the day-to-day activities of the landfill before its closure in 1983. Although the dump was a loud, smelly, wind-blasted environmental hazard, some of the people who worked there still carry fond memories of the place, and several significant Berkeley institutions emerged from friendships that were nurtured in that toxic soil. This episode explores the interconnected stories of folks who remember “the pit” long before it was turned into a park. First, you'll hear from Margie Ellis and her daughter Ruby Quintana, whose family were the unofficial managers of the landfill from the mid-1960s until the early 1980s. Then Martin Borque, executive director of The Ecology Center, and Dan Knapp, co-founder of Urban Ore, will discuss the dump's connection to Berkeley's pioneering recycling movement, as well as a consequential battle over a proposed incinerator. Finally, Katherine Davis and Steve Smith of the recently closed Ohmega Salvage, will explain how lessons learned at the dump informed a lifelong dedication to combatting the wastefulness of contemporary culture. We Talk with Graphic artist and photographer Stephen Jensen (Part 2) Stephen D. Jensen is known mostly for his work in the music and entertainment industries on album covers, packaging, guitar design, and artist photos. Stephen received his BA in graphic design at Columbia College of Chicago focusing mainly on graphic design, photography, and typography. Stephen's style comes from a combination of unique photography, photo direction, and photo manipulation, and a strong sense of color, design, and typography. He also possesses a strong background in marketing and branding having helped with the visual identity of some of the biggest brands in the business. Stephen is known for his outside thinking often coming up with ideas and concepts that are not always the most obvious solution while also managing to be the perfect fit. He is very confident when taking on full projects, working from original concepts, sketches, photography, design layouts, through final presentation and production. But Stephen also shines as part of a strong creative team and works well with other designers and photographers that challenge his skills.
