Laine Loxlea-Danann is the epitome of a Renaissance Woman – not only is she a Singer, Musician, Writer, Producer and Talent Manager – she even makes her wine out at her Cleveland Artists' Retreat. I first met Laine back in 2015 at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music when we were both studying Vocal Pedagogy. And not sure whether it was the Universe or the Instagram algorithm (I'm grateful either way!) – she came back into my orbit at the end of last year via Instagram stories. I was captivated by her and her story! She was living her version of Eat Pray Love as she went on a European Tour starting in Germany to watch a theatre company perform her self-penned musical theatre show – Critical Last Chance Years. The one-woman musical is based on Laine's experience of navigating societal pressure to find a partner in her 30s. The musical examines the social pressures of being single in a culture where couple relationships define the norm and where you're told at an incredible volume that if you try hard enough, wishes can come true. We spoke extensively about this and how a few years ago, while performing Laine discovered that she was not hearing sound the same way she used to. After multiple trips to health professionals, she finally got the diagnosis that she had Semicircular Canal Dehiscence - a rare opening between the uppermost semicircular canal in the upper part of the inner ear and the brain. The condition causes problems with hearing and balance. Laine talks about how this prompted her to pursue her many other talents and skills, including talent management. She now runs a boutique agency nurturing and booking work for actors from all walks of life, age groups and acting experience. Laine said helping other artists on their creative journey is something she has always naturally done and enjoyed but gave her an enormous sense of purpose after her diagnosis. Resilient, resourceful and downright inspirational – Laine is making her way back to performing again – and will start by being the accompanist (she's a killer piano player) in Critical Last Chance Years when it is performed again here in Australia. The German Theatre company will be coming over to direct it next year! Please enjoy this episode – and as always, let me know what resonates for you!? If you are comfortable with sharing with me, have you had a condition that has made it difficult for you to sing? Would love to hear from you. Leave me a comment! Love Mel ❤️
Today on Streets of Your Town we're revisiting Vidya Makan, who you may remember meeting on this podcast in December 2022 when we featured her as one of the talented performers in the smash hit touring musical Six. The show broke all attendance records at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre during its 2022 season. But this Somerville House and Queensland Conservatorium graduate has not left her run there, and has now debuted her own musical written in collaboration with Sonya Suares, at Sydney's Hayes Theatre, again to rave reviews. The Sydney Morning Herald described Vidya as “a gifted storyteller”, and her show The Lucky Country as “remarkable” - where “national myth-making gets a well overdue shake-up”. We go backstage at the Hayes Theatre on Streets of Your Town to speak to Vidya after yet another standing ovation for The Lucky Country, and find out how this acclaimed Brisbane actor, singer and composer/lyricist came to realise a dream that she could be seen for who she truly is on stage. This week on A Voice and Beyond we continue delving into the world of Popular Music education in academia, as we release part two of our two-part interview with our guest, Caleb James who is a Senior Lecturer in the Bachelor of Music at Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University and is the Course Convenor of the Popular Music Program. In Part 1, Caleb shared his career pathway from a highly successful career in the music industry as an award-winning touring performer, international songwriter and music producer, working at a high level with Record Labels, and Distribution Labels, and how he transitioned into an academic career in a supervisory role. In this episode, Caleb discusses how he has developed and continues updating the course content for the popular music program, which is growing in demand every year.Although QCGU has adopted such an innovative popular music program, Caleb understands that not all academic institutions are so receptive or progressive when it comes to change. Caleb describes some of the roadblocks that teachers, educators and the institutions themselves may encounter while trying to update and create new curricula. He tells us quite candidly that when developing new academic music programs, it requires a commitment to controlled chaos. He believes that students who do arts' degrees don't want to go down traditional learning pathways and it takes steady calculated risks to create an environment where students are excited to be there to learn.Remember this is Part 2 of a two-part interview with Caleb James and Part 1 of this interview, is episode number 102. On this episode we are joined by Ariana Schneider to talk about writing and recording a musical in Australia. Ariana Schneider has been involved in Music and Theatre for many, many years. She ran a very successful singing and drama studio from which students were accepted into the prestigious institutions of The Sydney Con, NIDA, WAPA, Victoria College of the Arts and Queensland Conservatorium. Ariana also taught music and drama in many of the schools in her area as well as writing a mini play and a musical for the students to perform. She is currently in the final stages of completing the recording process of a musical she wrote called "CRYSTAL DREAMING". Ariana wrote the script, lyrics and music to its 22 songs and worked with a producer/arranger from a professional recording studio - Turn Around Music (Peter Stevenson) who created fabulous orchestration. The musical was first performed in 2016 with a fully staged production in Ariana's home town of Taree, in which 32 performers including 14 children took part. The whole town supported the project and they played to 3 full houses. A film was made of the production. Never having been fully satisfied with the script, Ariana used the lockdown time to take a course in Play Writing with the TheaterMakers Studio in New York and also received dramaturgical support from Eric Webb. We open with stories about Ben performing music as Orlando Furious and doing shows with the underground theater scene in Melbourne. Asia shares bittersweet memories of singing for their church as a child. We talk about the community at Big Fork Theater that got them started on their improv journey. Asia and Ben tell me about their current creative passion, their improv duo. They recently had a show (like a real show with people in attendance and everything) called “Ben & Asia Have A Relationship” in which they performed their improvised show totally naked. Unsurprisingly the show is about vulnerability, so the birthday suits and the musical accompaniment serve to ease the audience into the experience. Wow. These two are pretty amazing. Tune in! Support Asia Beck & Ben Snaith by keeping an eye out for new projects on the Alt City productions page on the Orlando Furious website. Hopefully soon, Brisbane will go back down on their covid numbers and they can perform in theaters again! Yes But Why Podcast is a proud member of the HC Universal Network family of podcasts. Today, we continue the conversation with the first ever female AFL Grand Final Umpire. Chelsea Roffey recounts the goosebump-worthy moment in 2012 when thousands of fans at Melbourne Cricket Ground cheered her on for her presence on the field as the historical female first in sport. She may always have been sporty yet she started out as an aspiring musician with a scholarship at the Queensland Conservatorium and transitioned into journalism due to her love of language and communication. As a Churchill Fellow exploring “social change that enables girls to be authors of their own lives”, she’s gone on to be a Gender & Diversity Facilitator, a journalist, a speaker and an author. It’s her experiences as female in a non-traditional domain however that revealed the untapped potential for driving performance through diversity.Creating an online program to help businesses climb out of Covid-19 on “How to Attract and Retain Greater Diversity”, she seems to constantly be creating new and different ways to contribute to society. The Goods on Chelsea:Gender and diversity facilitator | Churchill Fellow | First female AFL Grand Final umpireBorn in South Australia, raised in Queensland and cultured in Melbourne, an innate interest in uncharted territory lured me to the intrepid world of goal umpiring at age 17. In my youth, moustached middle-aged men in overcoats were as much a fixture of Australian football as meat pies and yelling "Ball!" for holding decisions. No moustache ... no problem! Jumping head-first into waving the flags for gender equality, it became evident that playing to my strengths would enable me to thrive. Lived experience has since proved the nature of diversity of thinking to drive both individual and collective performance. In 2012 I became the first woman to umpire an AFL Grand Final. But the true breakthrough was becoming the first umpire in history to be cheered (yes, cheered!) by the crowd ahead of that epic battle between Sydney and Hawthorn. Before my weekend hobby became a profession, I was an aspiring musician, having received an academic scholarship to study a Bachelor of Music at the Queensland Conservatorium. Following a stint studying biomedical science, I switched to journalism, combining a love of language and communication with the adrenaline-charged life of AFL football.I have explored themes of culture, equality and performance in a range of forums; including as an invited guest of the APEC Women's Leadership Forum in Beijing, the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in New York, and during a Winston Churchill Fellowship, visiting the US, Canada, UK, Sweden and India.Pioneering the role of women in a non-traditional domain, my experiences have alerted me to the untapped potential in driving performance through diversity.Contact Chelsea: LinkedIn: @chelsearoffey Website: www.chelsearoffey.com.au Diversity Program: www.firstinfield.com.auGo to http://www.bit.ly/InTheGamePodcast to become part of this growing community of DREAMERS!
To watch the video version of this episode, click here. Vidya Makan is a composer, singer, actor, and musician based in Melbourne, Australia, and most recently starred as Dot/Marie in Sunday in the Park with George. Vidya’s other credits include: Lady Capulet in Romeo And Juliet, Green Day’s American Idiot, Merrily We Roll Along and Little Inez in Hairspray. As a composer, Vidya is currently working on My Home Too, a song cycle about Australia and home, while her debut full length musical Woman, inspired by the lives of bohemian artists Gerda Wegener and Lili Elbe is also in development. She is currently part of the original Australian cast of SIX the Musical as Catherine Parr. Vidya’s parents grew up in apartheid South Africa, later moving to Australia in the 1990’s to get away and start their family. She remembers going to the theater frequently with her family as a child, and when talking about her parents, calls her mom an “absolute arts nerd”, while her dad has a “beautiful” singing voice. Vidya started playing the piano when she was 3, and began singing in choirs when she was 5 years old - but was also a self-declared “tom-boy”. Her first dream was to play soccer for Australia, and at 15 years old Vidya received a scholarship to train at the Manchester United Soccer School in England for a week. While in England, she and her father attended a performance of Wicked, and Vidya recalls, “There was something about that show that just got under my skin.” They returned home to Australia, she auditioned for the school musical for the first time - The Wiz - and landed the role of Dorothy. And that was it! From there it was ‘goodbye soccer, hello theater’. Vidya went on to study musical theatre at The Queensland Conservatorium’s Griffith University. During our conversation, Vidya talks with us about the journey of finding her place in the performing arts industry in Australia. As a woman of color she “hasn’t had the cookie-cutter career because she isn’t the cookie-cutter performer” - as successful musical theater shows that transfer from America to Australia aren't necessarily crafted to showcase more ethnically diverse performers. She shares that a large part of her journey has been about finding those companies (usually with younger people at the helm) where she can be seen just as a woman, outside of type or ethnicity or race. And so it seems SIX the Musical is very naturally the next step in this journey, as casting was “not about anything else other than getting the right person for the role”, boasting diverse casts across all its productions. In this episode, we talk about: How the postponement of the Australian production of SIX affected her The outpouring of love and support they have received from the SIX fan base The importance of being a role model now that she’s in the spotlight How English actress Jameela Jamil’s social media activism against female body shaming has changed her life Taking the sexualization of women in pop culture/music and turning it on its head in SIX The differences in the performing arts industry in Australia versus America What she calls a “Muggle Job” Composing her own music, and working on creating an original musical of her own Connect with Vidya: IG: @vidyamakan Web: vidyamakan.com Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. Live recording of the premier performed in Brisbane (AUS) on July 29th, 2016. This piece was composed during my artistic residency at the Queensland Conservatorium in Brisbane, Australia in summer 2016. Ever morning, I woke up by the birds singing frenetically in front of my window. Sounds that I never had heard before although we know the same species (namely the magpie) also in Austria; but here they are sounding quite different. Exploring Brisbane and its surrounding with a bike brought me in closer contact to the botanic environment of the city, namely around the Brisbane river to which I was listening through so-called hydrophones. All these sounds and the pulsating flow of energy that I sensed everywhere inspired me to compose this piece which can be regarded as a personal garland to this wonderful city. Brisky Breath was performed on my realtime composition environment m@ze°2, an interactive software written in Max that allows the spontaneous creation and transformation of sound in space.
