Haar naam? Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes.

Sometimes I nerd out and assign the jersey number of one of my favorite (current or former) players from one of my favorite teams to the episode I'm posting about. So, for Episode No. 89, the default move would be to go Otis Taylor. I could also throw in Jason "Big Diesel" Dunn or Keith Cash, but -- since Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes came up in this episode's conversation, it's gotta be the Andre Rison episode. And what a trip this episode was. Figuratively and literally. My guest Dan Henk is a trip. And his story's especially a trip. And while he's a boyfriend and a business owner, an author and a podcast host, a cancer survivor and a widower, getting to Dan was no short trip, either.Yes, that's right. Detective Dumbass here thought it'd be a good idea to travel outside of my home region to interview a guest. I had two folks in L.A. and one in Chicago involved in talks, but the one that wound up working was none other than one of the owners of Abyss Fine Art & Tattoo Studio in Long Beach, NY. So, on two hours of sleep, I took a 7:00 a.m. flight to Queens, Ubered to Mr. Henk's joint, set up, interviewed him, broke down, Ubered back to JFK, and caught a 7:00 p.m. flight back to KC.And my back still hurts.Regardless...it was a fun adventure, and I'm grateful to Dan for sharing his time and his spot to let me roll in and talk life and music with him.In addition to talking about Dan's story, we also talked about a few of his favorite records. Those were these:Metallica's Ride the Lightning (1984)Atomizer (1985), Big BlackSlayer's Reign in Blood (1986)...For Victory (1994), Bolt ThrowerDeadguy's Fixation on a Co-Worker (1995)It was good times and aggressive oldies.Check out Dan's Web site, though. Give his podcast a gander. Peep his spot, toss him an Instagram follow, and shop his list of publications. Guy's a content machine. Thanks for viewing, listening, reading, and -- above all -- being you.Cheers.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio samples contained in this episode. Shamari DeVoe and Brandi Williams Step Behind The Rope. Checking in from the ATL, Shamari and Brandi are here to discuss it all. Are you guys loving this season of RHOA? We figured it was a great time to share our chat with this one season RHOA wonder and her bandmate as we watch on. Having met when they were just teenagers, Brandi and Shamari went on to form supergroup Blaque. Of course, no discussion of Blaque would be complete without a nod to the late Lisa "Left Eye Lopes" who helped discover and mentor Blaque. It is also the 20th anniversary of "Bring It On", which both Shamari and Brandi starred in alongside Gabrielle Union and Kirsten Dunst. We discuss what it was like to work alongside those two film veterans plus what Cheerleading Practice and those seemingly impossible stunts were really like. Of course we HAD to ask Shamari all about what being a real Housewife of Atlanta was like, the last time she spoke to Nene Leakes and the rest of the current cast, and how husband Ronnie DeVoe was doing. Put down those Peaches folks and take a listen to this fun filled episode with Shamari and Brandi. @shamaridevoe @thebrandid @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef BONUS & AD FREE EPISODES Available at - www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope BROUGHT TO YOU BY: RELIEFBAND - reliefband.com (20% Off Plus Free Shipping. TLC's Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes was known as “the crazy one.” She did, after all, burn down the mansion of her boyfriend, NFL player Andre Rison. But given the fact that it was done after one of many domestic assaults, Disgraceland sees Left Eye as a badass—and not “the crazy one.” This episode digs into what really happened that night, who Lisa Lopes really was as a person, and the details surrounding her own premature death. The title of TLC's 1994 album “CrazySexyCool” was appropriate as it defined the three members of the group individually and collectively. The group – made up of Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas – lays claim as arguably (still) the most successful girl group of all time. And this album is one major reason why. It's a fierce collection of strong, confident and even risky songs that, quite frankly, female artists weren't doing at the time. “Creep” and “Waterfalls” are still radio standards to this day; the latter of which addressed dark themes such as drug/gang warfare and the AIDS crisis. With more than 12 million albums sold, “CrazySexyCool” in many ways set the standard for female group success.

One of the highest selling pop girl groups of all time, TLC, has influenced multiple genres of music that will be felt for generations to come. Tionne “T-Boz'' Watkins, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas defined girl power and individuality in the 90s. Their third album “Fan Mail'' was an instant smash that led to awards and headlining tours. However, the three women experienced ups and downs during their success from creative differences to health issues. The group eventually conquered these challenges and came together for one final album. Unfortunately, before they finished recording, Lisa passed away unexpectedly. In 2002, TLC made their first appearance without Lisa at the MTV Music Awards and the next year, performed a final time to 60 thousand fans to honor the life of Lisa Lopes. The duo then took a hiatus until 2017 when they crowdfunded their 5th self-titled album, “TLC.” Despite their bumps in the road, TLC managed to reign as the queens of pop, and their influence continues to set trends and open doors for female groups today. T'Melle was discovered by the late Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes of TLC. Lopes added her to one of her girl groups, Egypt. The other group members were Joy "Zada" Lonon, Katrina "Akila" Gibson, and Sophia "Isis" Gibson. T'Melle was previously named T'Nef. Lopes mentored and managed the group. On April 25, 2002, a car crash in La Ceiba, Honduras killed Lopes and injured other friends and family members, including T'Melle. T'Melle was among the seriously injured passengers, and unable to walk on her own. T'Melle left the group, began using a wheelchair, and underwent numerous surgeries to her left leg and hip. Although she was a teenager, she convinced her parents to support her move to Atlanta, Georgia, so she could continue her career path. Through diligent hard work and focus, T'Melle was introduced to Walter Sutton, CEO of Infra-Red Entertainment, an Atlanta-based entertainment company. While in Atlanta, T'Melle perfected every aspect of her craft and captured the attention of R&B notable Usher Raymond. Soon after, she traveled with Usher on a European tour as his only female background singer. Grammy Award-winning producer, Tricky Stewart, who was also captivated by her vocals and stage performance style, took her under his wing, which aided in her advancement as an artist. T'Melle's most recent album, "The Interview", was released in 2013. It was led by the single Go To War, which was released in April 2011.[3] "Pill" was released on Rapper Future's Mixtape "Welcome 2 Mollyworld" in late August.[4] In October 2015 she released her uptempo Single "Drop it down"!
BAD BITCHES OF HISTORY #4: AMY WINEHOUSE & LISA ‘LEFT EYE' LOPES | The Hot Girls return with lesson four of iconic women of history: musical diva edition! Ash (@ashleighxorose) starts us off with the tale of Amy Winehouse, a woman known for big hair and some troubled dependencies. Despite the off-the-rails depiction, you will get to know a girl who, with immense talent and charm, just wanted to be loved and sufferer as she felt as if she was from another era .Next, Indi (@fueledbyindi) takes the wheel and breaks down the ‘crazy' reputation of Lisa ‘Left Eye' Lopes When you dive deeper, you find a woman, taught young about toxic love and to self-medicate with alcohol. All she wanted was to be respected but was led to run away from it all to prove a point of what the music industry is known for: sucking the artist dry. Both tales have tragic endings, but it's their legacy and soul on bestselling albums where we can learn the most. In this episode, I'm chatting with super talented Singer/Songwriter, 1/3 of the Iconic group Blaque, Marriage Ambassador Shamari DeVoe who is a timeless beauty!! She talked about her experience on BET Presents: The Encore, her love/passion for music, the impact that Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes made on her life, and SO MUCH MORE!! This was a blast and lots of laughs! She is so cool!!
Growing up, the first time I heard the name “Lisa Left-Eye Lopes" was when she stepped onto the top of the pops stage alongside Sporty Spice to perform the single ‘Never Be The Same Again'. I bought Mel C's album off the back of that and as a literal child found that song dope. I came to know her later as the MC in TLC but never really realised just quite how successful and dominant TLC were as a group in the 90s. While this episode will centre around Left Eye, I'll obviously talk about the group's journey because that was so much a part of her. Fittingly, this episode is going live in a particular season known as GEMINI SEASON and I was thinking when I first started watching Lisa in interviews that something in her reminded me of myself and then saw her be described as a true gemini and thought ahhh that's what it is. We both crazy. But more than crazy, she was a brilliant brilliant MC. So slick and smooth and despite having her life cut short, aged just 30, she delivered so much in the time that she was around. So this is a lesson in finding your space, by Lisa Lopes.Lex Handles:@lexonthedecks See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

'Shape of You' by Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, Tameka “Tiny” Harris, Kandi, Kevin “She'kspere” Briggs, Ed Sheeran & Johnny McDaid . After that last podcast I needed a simple silly dimpled lovely loving love song to put a little love in my heart and a little more love in the world. Science has concluded that there is just too little of it. I can show you studies, but why study love when we can dance about architecture and load up cowboy bar jukeboxes with Kendrick Lamarr instead? Hey, babe, take a walk on the Weird Side with me. FUCK I NEED SLEEP.
Left Eye was a force to be reckoned with, and 1/3 of one of the best-selling female groups of all time, TLC. Johnny and Nat discuss the famous mansion burning that occurred in 1994 during the volatile relationship between Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes and Andre Rison. Then they talk about how if they were different people living in a different place with different skills and dreams and living in a different time there's no telling what they could have accomplished. And of course they dive into how likely they would be to remain married if they came home and their wives had burned their houses down because they were pissed.
As one fifth of the most successful girl group of all time, Mel C spent her early twenties inseparably tied to her athletic alter ego. Her status as Sporty Spice was so entrenched in her public persona that when the Spice Girls took a hiatus in 1999, Mel C did what any trapped queer person would do; she cut her hair, dyed it blonde, changed her name and reached out to Madonna.Northern Star by Melanie C was the outcome. The debut tells tales of aggrieved emancipation, potential secret sapphism and the ongoing plight of the homeless through the combined sonic mediums of grunge, R&B, musical theatre, dance music and more. Though perhaps not a wholly cohesive offering, Northern Star granted us access to previously unseen shades of the singer and gave us the best solo single of any Spice Girl ever, thanks in large part to Hex Hector. From Wembley Stadium to the West End; Manchester Academy 3 to Mighty Hoopla, join Andy and Drew as they take a whimsical glance back over Melanie's twenty year solo career. Shamari DeVoe and Brandi Williams Step Behind The Rope. Checking in from the ATL, Shamari and Brandi are here to discuss it all. Having met when they were just teenagers, Brandi and Shamari went on to form supergroup Blaque. Of course, no discussion of Blaque would be complete without a nod to the late Lisa "Left Eye Lopes" who helped discover and mentor Blaque. No discussion would also be complete without a nod to the group's 20th anniversary which just passed. Congrats Ladies! We have one of the most exciting, informative and legendary guest interviews in the show's history - Erick Sermon! The Green-Eyed Bandit is an open book and doesn't hesitate to "go there" on many topics you'll want to hear about. We talk about the early years of meeting PMD and landing their first record deal for $1500. We talk about how Russell brought them to Def Jam and then how Clive Davis forked over a cool 4 million to sign Erick after Music had dropped. We talk about touring with Run-DMC. We talk Craig Mack, Biggie, 50 Cent, Lyor Cohen, Ludacris, Nas and of course, Redman. We touch on the PMD beef and the possibility of a reunion. Erick says his best years of his life was when they broke-up and he went solo. We find out that Erick and Ice Cube were best friends and that E helped him prepare for going solo as well. We find out that Dr. Dre had originally turned down the opportunity to remix "The Platform" by Dilated Peoples, so E stepped in and cashed out after making the beat in just 30 minutes. We also learn many great (GOAT) producers turned down to work with Shaq, but Erick was game. We talk about Erick's rim shop and what it meant to Atlanta and specifically, the hip-hop scene. And yes, Keith Murray kicked David Banner out of the shop once too! Erick doesn't hold back about anything. Whether he was messing around with Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes or Wendy Williams, he goes there. We learn Eric B. is still the guy to get things done and was responsible for getting Marvin Gaye's family to clear the sample. We talk Def Squad and learn Erick isn't a big fan of their cover of Rapper's Delight. We find out how Red & Meth also derailed the Def Squad. And we finally find out why we aren't hearing more of Erick and Redman. This description sounds like we're giving it all away, but we haven't even scratched the surface. You don't want to miss this interview!

TLC’s Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes was known as “the crazy one”. She did, after all, burn down her NFL playing boyfriend, Andre Rison’s mansion. But given the fact that it was done after what was then one of many domestic assaults, Disgraceland chooses to view Left Eye as a bad ass… and not "the crazy one". This episode digs into what really happened that night, who Lisa Lopes really was as a person and the details surrounding her own premature death. face – andThe unchanging voice – of singer/songwriter Cassandra Lucas is back on the music scene in 2017, gifting listeners with three new hit singles, paving the way for her solo debut CD. Known as one-half of platinum selling R&B duo Changing Faces, she has returned to claim her rightful position as one of today's top music talents.Outside of Changing Faces, Lucas demonstrated her songwriting skills, by co-writing and doing background vocals/vocal arrangements for Donnell Jones on “Special Girl” and “Apple Pie,” for Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, on “Friends,” and for Jodi Watley on “Off The Hook,” which went #1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Chart. And now, Lucas is prepared for her resurgence, this time as a solo artist. She has three outstanding singles that are launching her back onto radio and other venues where her fans, both old and new, can enjoy them. One song is “Music & A Beat,” an infectious uptempo party anthem, another is the bouncy “I Love You,” a midtempo inspirational single (much needed for these days and times) and the third is “Give Love A Chance,” a world beat tune that Cassandra wrote long ago, but has a potent, relevant message for what's going on in the world in 2017. The proceeds from the sales of the third song are earmarked to go toward charitable relief efforts. All of her new songs beautifully feature Cassandra's smooth, golden vocal tones and demonstrate her acumen at crafting hits.

On this segment of Brunch In The Basement with JaVonne, we take time to talk about and listen to some of the music of our legendary singers who have passed away. Some left us way too soon, Like Aaliyah, Minnie Riperton, Phyllis Hyman, Biggie, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Gerald Levert, Heavy D, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, and Tupac. What might they be giving us and feeding us today had they lived longer. And then those voices that I grew up on, Billie Holiday, Barry White, Rick James, Teddy Pendergrass, McFadden and Whitehead, not to mention our recently fallen angels like Natalie Cole and Maurice White. This show will pay honor to as many as we can discuss in two hours. Please join us for this tribute and Brunch in the Basement with JaVonne.
