About Pink Coat, MDPink Coat, MD was created by two Ivy-League friends, Dr. Tammie Chang and Dr. Luisa Duran, who first met as Freshmen at Brown University nearly 25 years ago. Both first generation Americans and born into immigrant families, Drs. Tammie and Luisa are incredibly compassionate souls who felt called to serve others as physicians from a young age. They dedicated their lives to becoming the very best physicians only to discover they would suffer silently from physician burnout and isolation, and consider leaving medicine far too soon. Determined not to give up on their childhood dreams, they discovered a path toward empowerment and wellness through evidence-based resources like personal growth, leadership development, and most importantly, community. After learning that countless other women physicians were struggling in silence and leaving the medical profession, they created Pink Coat, MD to help women physicians thrive – and ensure the same for all future generations of young women in medicine. Thanks for tuning in! This episode was originally published in October 2021. Dr. Tammie Chang is aboard-certified physician in pediatric hematology/oncology practicing in Tacoma, Washington. She is the medical director of Provider Wellness for MultiCare Health System. She is the Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Pink Coat, MD, a platform to support and empower the personal and professional success of all women physicians. She has held numerous leadership positions including Director of the American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) ELEVATE Leadership Development Program for Attending Women Physicians, President of the Washington State Chapter of AMWA, Co-Founder of her local Women in Medicine (Cool Chicks In Medicine) group, and Co-Founder of the Women of Influence Network (WIN) @MultiCare for her healthcare system. In this episode we discuss her story of being in a dark place due to a confluence of practice situations and not wanting to ask for help. She likens this to what many are experiencing during the pandemic. We talk about what worked for her then and now and the impetus it gave her to create a safe space for other physicians to be honest and vulnerable and to know they are not alone.  She comes back to the basics to support herself. Also, you don't want to miss out on her book recommendations! (I have already ordered them!) Pearls of Wisdom for Well-Being: 1- Put Your Own Self-Care First so you can take care of others (Remember the O2 mask image) 2- Set Boundaries! "I learned the hard way what can happen when physicians—especially women physicians—lack personal boundaries. Before hitting my low point, I had no boundaries. I had been raised to give, give, give, and, when times became tough, to give more by working harder. In medical school and training, we were taught to not have boundaries, but rather to do everything in the service of our patients who should always come first. Now I realize that we physicians must put ourselves first. We are hurting ourselves—and doing a disservice to our patients, colleagues, and families—when we put everyone and everything else before our own needs. After all, we are our most precious resource and must use that resource in the best way possible." Tammie Chang is a pediatric hematology-oncology physician and co-founder, Pink Coat, MD. On her website our guest, Dr. Tammie Chang wrote: Women who become physicians are suffering from record alarming rates of burnout, emotional exhaustion, stressors, and even suicide. What we do not learn as students, trainees, or attending physicians — what is not imparted to us in our long and arduous education and training — is the understanding that in order to best serve as the healers and physicians we have the potential to become, we have to first be strong and healthy in our own body, mind, and spirit. “Do no harm” has to apply to ourselves first. "Far from signaling weakness, asking for and receiving help is not only a sign of strength, but a sign of courageous leadership. And so, I ask you to put on your own oxygen mask, and then to reach out and help your colleagues put on theirs, too. As physicians, the trauma we've experienced through our decades-long education and training, through our competitive medical culture, and through years of silence and self-sacrifice have created a common bond and an unspoken understanding. We must give ourselves the love and compassion that I know is deep within each of us, and we must help each other to do the same. Tammie Chang, MD joins us today to discuss Kind Intentional Boundaries. Boundaries are a relatively new concept that were essentially introduced to the public in the 1990's, so they're not something our parents (for example) grew up with. As women, we were socialized not to talk back or complain and to be caretakers and givers, so this makes the concept of boundaries extra difficult (and potentially feel negative). Burnout in women, especially physicians, is real, but boundaries can mean freedom. So, how do we set positive boundaries with kindness and intent?   Dr. Tammie Chang is a board-certified physician in pediatric hematology/oncology practicing in Tacoma, Washington at Mary Bridge Children's Hospital. She is the Medical Director of the MultiCare Provider Wellness Program and Founder and Director of her hospital's Pediatric Cancer Survivorship Program. She is the Co-Founder of Pink Coat, MD, a safe, supportive and loving community for women physicians that supports them in doing their best work and living their best lives, and the founder of her empowerment and leadership coaching practice, Tammie Chang, MD. She is also a certified empowerment and leadership coach for early career women physicians. Host Jeremy Quinby talks to Dr. Tammie Chang about the challenges facing women who are care providers and how creating better boundaries with time, energy and relationships free us to do better work while creating space for more things we enjoy.  Shortly after her child was born, and with increasing pressures from her work as a pediatric oncologist, she found herself overwhelmed with the demands on her time and energy and for a moment considered taking her own life as a way out.  This lead her to seek not only mental health support, but help from a health coach who helped her understand how essential it is to create better boundaries to enjoy all of the things she wanted to be part of her life.  Seeing the growing need for this coaching for women in health care professions, she has shifted her focus to helping others like herself who are struggling to find the balance in their lives and careers.  She has developed personal and group coaching programs as a well as Pink Coat, MD., to build a community to support for women in health fields.Links: https://www.tammiechangmd.comhttps://pinkcoatmd.comSupport the show (http://patreon.com/highwaytohealth)

Hello 2022 from Vibrant Lives Podcast!I am excited to kick off my year of podcast interviews with Dr Tammie Chang. Tammie is a physician in paediatric haematology and oncology, plus she is an empowerment and leadership coach for women physicians (doctors). In this episode Tammie will share with us advice on how to set boundaries to avoid burnout and enjoy working as a doctor. Although Tammie's focus is on women doctors, her advice can be applied to all busy people, especially women. Women typically face a multitude of competing pressures at work and at home, where they continue to shoulder a disproportionate share of household duties. Heaped on top of this is that women are socialised to care and give. This can make setting boundaries difficult for many women but as you'll learn from Tammie, it can be done and it's important that it is done.If you're a busy person who feels like there is never enough time to care for yourself, this episode is for you!TAMMIE CHANG, MDTammie Chang, MD website: https://www.tammiechangmd.comPink Coat, MD website: https://pinkcoatmd.com/about/Tammie's social media handle: @tammiechangmdTammie's book, "Boundaries for Women Physicians": https://www.amazon.com.au/Boundaries-Women-Physicians-Career-Medicine-ebook/dp/B09R7VY1QF/ref=nav_youraccount_switchacct?crid=32KL9WIFOGAAD&keywords=tammie+chang&qid=1643840709&sprefix=tammie+chang%2Caps%2C245&sr=8-1HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT THE PODCASTPlease tell your friends about the podcast and share it with them.Follow me on Instagram @vibrant_lives_podcastFollow my Facebook page: @vibrantlivespodcastIf you could rate and review the podcast on Apple Podcasts, that would be super helpful.Check out ways you can support the podcast on my website: https://vibrantlivespodcast.com/be-involved/
