New US-based research suggests women are less likely to die when treated by female doctors. A study has followed people 65 and older, observing data on those who died within 30 days of seeing a doctor. 8.15 percent of women who died had been treated by female physicians, but that rose to 8.38 percent for women who'd been seen by a man. For male patients, their doctor's gender made no difference. US correspondent Dan Mitchinson says the numbers may seem like a tiny gap, but it could save 5,000 lives each year. "The study suggests that they are less likely to have experienced miscommunication and misunderstanding and bias."  LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sickle Cell is a hereditary blood disorder that causes the red blood cells to form in a sickled or banana shape instead of the normal round shape. This change in shape makes it difficult for the red blood cells to function properly, including carrying oxygen to cells. Sickle Cell presents in two ways: Sickle Cell Trait (SCT): genetic carrier of the disease, but usually does not exhibit symptomsSickle Cell Disease (SCD): experiences symptoms such as anemia, swelling in hands and feet, pain episodes, frequent infections, or vision problemsSCD and SCT impact African Americans at disproportionate rates. Sickle Cell affects 1 million to 3 million Americans and 8 to 10 percent of African Americans. This is because SCD and SCT are an evolutionary trait that people developed in response to help protect them from malaria. As such, this condition is common in large parts of Africa. Who built the twentieth century birth control movement? In Women's Medicine: Family Planning and British Female Doctors in Transnational Perspective, 1920-70 (Manchester University Press 2020), Dr. Caroline Rusterholz highlights British female doctors' key contribution to the production and circulation of scientific knowledge around contraception, family planning and sexual disorders between 1920-70. It argues that women doctors were pivotal in developing a holistic approach to family planning and transmitting this knowledge across borders, playing a more prominent role in shaping scientific and medical knowledge than previously acknowledged.  The book locates women doctors' involvement within the changing landscape of national and international reproductive politics. Illuminating women doctors' agency in the male-dominated field of medicine, this book reveals their practical engagement with birth control and later family planning clinics in Britain, their participation in the development of the international movement of birth control and family planning and their influence on French doctors. Drawing on a wide range of archived and published medical materials, Rusterholz sheds light on the strategies British female doctors used and the alliances they made to put forward their medical agenda and position themselves as experts and leaders in birth control and family planning research and practice. Nicole Bourbonnais is Associate Professor of International History and Politics and Co-Director of the Gender Centre at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland. Host Jeremy Quinby talks to Dr. Tammie Chang about the challenges facing women who are care providers and how creating better boundaries with time, energy and relationships free us to do better work while creating space for more things we enjoy.  Shortly after her child was born, and with increasing pressures from her work as a pediatric oncologist, she found herself overwhelmed with the demands on her time and energy and for a moment considered taking her own life as a way out.  This lead her to seek not only mental health support, but help from a health coach who helped her understand how essential it is to create better boundaries to enjoy all of the things she wanted to be part of her life.  Seeing the growing need for this coaching for women in health care professions, she has shifted her focus to helping others like herself who are struggling to find the balance in their lives and careers.  She has developed personal and group coaching programs as a well as Pink Coat, MD., to build a community to support for women in health fields.Links: https://www.tammiechangmd.comhttps://pinkcoatmd.comSupport the show (http://patreon.com/highwaytohealth)
