A conversation about wellness, sustainability, and restoring your purpose in medicine. This episode is an invitation to reframe how we view our role in medicine. We emphasize long-term well-being over short-term fixes and prioritizing the human side of medicine. We share practical tools for rekindling your passion and calibrating your energy.  Dr. Linda Hawes Clever is the founding President of RENEW, a nonprofit dedicated to helping healthcare professionals, especially doctors, maintain and regain their enthusiasm, effectiveness, and sense of purpose. Dr. Hawes Clever has spent decades advocating for physician well-being.  In this conversation, she shares valuable insights on how we can renew, refresh, and recalibrate for greater sustainability in our work and lives. Dr. Hawes Clever earned her medical degrees from Stanford University and has held numerous distinguished positions, including Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCSF, Associate Dean at Stanford, and founding Chair of Occupational Health at California Pacific Medical Center. She is an active member of the National Academy of Medicine and has received multiple prestigious awards, including the American Medical Women's Association Elizabeth Blackwell Award, the Stanford Medal for extraordinary service to the university,  the ACP AlbertStengel Award for Service and Achievement, and the California Medical Association's Nye Award for her contributions to physician health and well-being.  When Dr Clever and I were trained I medicine, we were told we should focus our attention exclusively on patient care and stay out of politics and systems. We encourage you to broaden your perspective. Physician Wellness is art, science, and business. It is an opportunity. This mindset shift allows you to approach challenges with curiosity and openness, leading to new and creative solutions for sustaining well-being.  Conversation, connection, and renewal are essential. Friendship and human connection can be life-saving. This is why small group coaching, retreats, and ongoing communities of support are so critical for physician wellness and sustainability.  Memorable moments: Physician wellness is a value, not a problem. When we treat it as a value, we create opportunities instead of obstacles. Friendship is a life-saving relationship. We're not meant to navigate life's challenges alone. Wellness doesn't have to be complicated—it starts with connection, conversation, and curiosity. We tend to listen to respond, rather than listen to understand. Imagine the change if we simply paused and truly heard one another. Which balls are rubber and which are glass? Knowing the difference can prevent exhaustion and help us prioritize what truly matters. No mud, no lotus. Sometimes our most beautiful transformations come from the messiest moments. Patients want their doctors to be well. The best care comes from those who have the energy and capacity to give it. We are allowed to see ourselves with the same compassion we show our patients. Doctors are human too. Burnout isn't just an individual issue—it's a systemic one. But real change starts with small, human moments of connection and renewal. Curiosity is the source of discovery, adventure, and even joy. If you've lost your curiosity, it might be time to renew. Dr. Clever's work at RENEW focuses on bringing health to those who give health, helping medical professionals regain their passion and sense of purpose. She believes that by learning to listen, connect, and prioritize our well-being, we can create a more sustainable and fulfilling career in healthcare. It includes valuable insights for those feeling overwhelmed by the demands of juggling too many responsibilities. If you are juggling too many responsibilities, consider joining a community of support at Pause & Presence. Pause & Presence programs offer the perfect space for you to recharge, find camaraderie, and explore meaningful conversations that can transform both your practice and your life. She was Assistant Professor of Medicine at Columbia for many years before relocating to California where she continues to teach medical students and practice medicine part-time with a focus in geriatrics. Dr. Chin currently resides in California with her husband and their three children. Dr. Chin is here today to discuss her foundational position paper that AMWA and Korn Ferry Health published at the end of September, “Women in Medicine- Setting the Agenda for Change”. Listen in to hear about: - AMWA's work in increasing fertility awareness, advocacy and resources for physicians working through these challenges. - Being a leader at whatever stage you are at will help to increase females in leadership roles and help close the gender gap in leadership. - Finding your passion and plug in there. - The importance of building a better pipeline for women in medicine. - Remembering we are humans before heroes, mental healthcare is so important for physicians and often is overlooked. - These challenges identified in this report are something that we need everyone to help tackle, not just women. Small actions can lead to big change. We strongly encourage our listeners to read the paper and find ways that you can affect change in these areas. In this episode, Theresa talks about her unique path to medicine and the resets she has made as a clinician-educator.  Who knew that baton twirling would have the outcome it did!  She shares her strategy to determine the timing for those resets noting it is ok to sometimes need a change of scenery. Her outlook on options as a physician, particularly as a generalist, is a refreshing take.  We recorded this interview in mid-June 2022 prior to the Supreme Court decision but she was already highlighting the powerful need for advocacy in all aspects but particularly equity and women's reproductive health. She appeals "Let's not go backwards." Listen in to learn more about AMWA, the Power of Women book she just read, and the power of a community of physicians.  Pearls of Wisdom: 1. Finding a supportive community can lead to opportunities of "Why Not!" 2. Being a part of larger organization can help sort out the rough edges, give perspective, and be a source of support and strength in numbers. It can give you visibility on a larger scale and help you find your place in the world. 3. Consider a five-year check in to determine if you are getting the same amount of joy out of a role that you were before.  4. Doctors have options and remember there are so few of us around! 5. Know the importance of advocacy- even on the 1:1 level. Advocacy work helps you get a better understanding of how your community works.  6. Be Proactive.

“If we really focus on good care for each other, we are in a much better position to offer good care for the patients. ” - Dr. Natasha W. L Beauvais MD, MPH   What happens in a medical organization when the healthcare team learns how to care for each other, and how does that impact job satisfaction and patient care? How does it impact employee retention? Cohost Dr. Jen Barna talks with Dr. Natasha W. Lewry Beauvais MD, MPH about her practice and implementation of programs that do just that.  As a physician at Northern Virginia Family Practice Associates, a concierge medical practice, Dr. Beauvais shares how her practice has established their positive workplace culture by first recognizing what you can do to make those around you succeed. By asking what you may do to support your coworkers, Dr. Beauvais and Dr. Barna talk about the importance of maintaining high levels of trust throughout your team and how to perpetuate the want to care for your teammates and how that leads to better patient care. How does this approach lead to a shift in mindset so that you may find more joy practicing medicine with those around you?   Book mentioned in the podcast: What Got You Here Won't Get You Here by Marshall Goldsmith Natasha W. Lewry Beauvais, MD, MPH is a physician at Northern Virginia Family Practice Associates (NVFP), a family medicine practice that offers full-service concierge health care in the Northern Virginia area. With more than 16 years of professional experience, Dr. Beauvais understands the importance of providing care for the whole family through every stage of life and values the continuation of long-term patient care.    Dr. Beauvais specializes in serving teenagers, new mothers and those requiring end-of-life care services. A home-birth advocate who has personally experienced home birth herself, she cares for women throughout pregnancy, birth and beyond, helping them connect with their newborns and providing them with breastfeeding support.    In her experience, the early stage of the parent-child connection is a pivotal moment for children's continued growth and wellbeing, especially during the young adult period. In addition to providing resources for families, she encourages parents to keep up with their children's yearly check-ins to help develop a stronger doctor-patient relationship so kids can stay educated about their health and feel supported by their doctors as they grow.   Prior to joining NVFP, Dr. Beauvais served as a physician at Unity Health Care in Washington D.C. and co-founded the Women's Mentoring Program for the American Medical Women's Association. She has received the Joseph Collins Award for Excellence in Arts and Letters and the University of Connecticut Family Medicine Award.
