I’m happy to introduce you to Tammy Lally a Certified Money Coach, TED Speaker, and Author of Money Detox. She helps others master their finances by stopping the cycle of their money shame to rewrite their financial future. Tammy works with people to first conquer their emotions around money and then through a comprehensive financial plan. I found Tammy after watching her TedTalk (which I hope you will go and watch) and knew she was someone that I needed to introduce to my listeners. The connection that she is able to make between money and emotions, especially grief and loss is powerful and I also believe life-saving for so many. She shares the hard story of losing her brother and what a profound impact both his experience and also her experience of grief had on her. His death made her want to understand her beliefs and behaviors around money and life. She feels it pushed her toward finding a higher power and finding answers. She credits a lot of Grace, Faith, and a lot of Grit for getting her through. We talk about the realization that we both had at points in our own experiences when it became clear that no one else was going to come and save us. When we realized that we have to do the work and stop looking to be rescued. This isn’t the same as trying to do everything yourself and not asking for help (which is very important), but that you also need to show up for yourself. When the strength comes from within it’s so powerful. “The healing that you can do through the lens of money is extraordinary. It’s one of the biggest healings of our time because we give money so much power. There is so much personal and spiritual growth that can come out of it.” ~Tammy Lally Tammy shares openly and honestly about her own money story and the personal bankruptcy she experienced shortly after her brother died. She says that our money story is imprinted on us, like much else, in the first 10 years of our lives and it’s just repeated over and over again unless we break the loop. This imprint happens through the way our parents did or didn’t talk about it, the energy around money when it was talked about, the stories we hear from the media and the way people with or without money are spoken about, and so many other things. One of the best ways Tammy says to break this pattern for the future is to talk about money with your children. Bringing it into the light is the only way. I hope you will listen to this episode if you are newly grieving a loss. She and I both share our own experiences with money in the first few years after loss and Tammy gives such important advice if you are also in this part of the process. Ultimately, you need to ask for help and allow the help that is being offered to you. Find someone that you trust to talk about what is going on and then receive the help that comes your way. Letting people help you with the basics so that you can be well enough to move slowly from surviving to thriving is so important. Tammy’s work is literally saving lives. I’d love to know what you think. Please share it with your friends and family, and be sure to tag me if you share it on social media so that I can say thank you. It's time to stop stuffing your money and emotions underneath a mattress damn it. Brendan talks with the amazing Tammy Lally, author, Ted Talk speaker and certified money coach. The two spirituality rich souls talk about the three emotions that are keeping you broke, how you can CHANGE your story around money and why you should never ask to take out less than $20 from an ATM.
Tammy Lally -- a certified money coach, author of Money Detox and TED Speaker -- works with her clients on the one thing that prevents people from reaching financial freedom, and that is our relationship with money. Financial planning is not a mysterious thing that only certain people understand and get access to. It's actually straight forward (and there's a lot of resources out there to get informed), but where we go awry is in our relationship to money. How it makes us feel. How we think it makes us look. How we value ourselves against what we own. So, in order to feel empowered and get to financial freedom, the emotional part of the equation needs to be addressed first. Many of us were taught to never discuss money, religion, and politics at a dinner table, and for good reasons. But Tammy says that in order to break free from the money shame and/or whatever else you have going on in your relationship with money, you have to be willing to talk about it. Get uncomfortable. Get real. And only then, will you take ground. Tammy's journey to financial freedom is very personal. In 2007, things came crashing down. Tammy lost her brother Keith to suicide, shortly after he received a foreclosure notice, which was the last straw in a long battle of financial shame and suffering. Then, she lost her business overnight and was forced to eventually declare personal bankruptcy. In this episode, Tanya and Tammy get real and talk about what it took to crawl out of the toughest moment in Tammy's life and how she helps her clients do the same. You may have had an experience, a situation, a life event that caused you to change how you looked at the world or led to a new understanding of how something is wrong and needs to be changed. Your personal story can have a powerful impact on an audience. But, for it to spark a movement, to cause others to change, to cause systems to change, you need to expand your personal story into a universal message. This is especially true for TEDx talks and keynotes. I had posted in the Speaking Your Brand Facebook group about a month ago looking for some willing participants to do on-air coaching calls. (Not a member? Join for free.) My guest today, Dr. Nicole Rochester, sent me an email with her idea for a TEDx talk and I loved it. Nicole is a physician (pediatrician by training) who left clinical medicine a year ago to launch a health advocacy and consulting company. You’ll hear in this episode what prompted her to start her company and how that has led to her idea for a TEDx talk. It was a pleasure talking with Nicole and you’ll hear the process we went through to take her personal story and expand it into a universal message. We come up with a really clear spine for her talk - and a single word that serves as a powerful metaphor for the change she wants to see and how it can happen. About My Guest: Dr. Nicole T. Rochester is a board-certified pediatrician, Clinical Assistant Professor, and the CEO of Your GPS Doc, LLC, an innovative company that helps aging individuals, those with chronic illnesses, and their family caregivers navigate the healthcare system through education, empowerment, advocacy, speaking, and consulting. While helping to care for her late father, who had multiple chronic illnesses including dementia, Dr. Rochester witnessed the disjointed healthcare system from the other side of the stethoscope and gained invaluable insight into the plight of patients and their caregivers. On many occasions, it was only because of her medical expertise that her father received the care he needed and deserved. She realizes that most patients and families do not have access to this “inside knowledge” and has made it her personal mission to make this information widely available. Two years ago, right before the November 2016 U.S. presidential election, I gave a talk at a small, local TEDxWomen chapter. Until now, I’ve never shared it publicly (beyond the audience that was there). Why? There are several reasons, which you’ll hear about in this episode. It was the most challenging speaking experience I’ve ever had. Not because of the format or the short length (8 minutes), but because of the topic I chose to talk about and the pressure I put on myself. The talk was called “It’s About Time We Really Talk About Women and Power” (the theme of the event was “It’s About Time”). As a society, why are we so ambivalent and uncomfortable about women in power? My TEDx talk examined our deep-rooted fears about women striving for powerful positions, our myths through the ages about powerful women, and how this came to a head in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. In this episode: You’ll hear me give the talk (as I originally wrote it - I was tempted to update it with what’s gone on during the past 2 years, but decided to keep it as is) You’ll learn how I wrote the talk as I deconstruct the structure, pacing, specific elements, and the opening and closing You’ll hear why it was the most challenging talk I’ve given, what I learned, and how you can apply these lessons to your own speaking journey I’d love to hear your thoughts: Have you had a challenging speaking experience? What is your biggest fear? How have you overcome it? How does a visibility strategy actually work? What does it look like to grow your business and your personal brand through speaking? What are the steps you can take? This episode is truly a case study in what happens when you show up consistently and put yourself out there with courage and conviction. Over the course of the past couple of years, my guest and client Tammy Lally went from speaking for free at local groups and the library to sharing her message on a TEDx stage to the national TED organization posting her talk on the TED.com home page (which is huge - it has over a million views now!) to writing a book that she recently published. The results? Knowing that her message is reaching more people, an influx of clients, and new opportunities for collaboration and bigger, paid speaking engagements. If you know people can benefit from your message and content but you’re feeling uncertain as to what to do next, tap into your local community for both visibility and support. Tammy and I talk about how she did that and you’ll get ideas you can use too. Do you need help figuring out your visibility steps to achieve your speaking and business goals? Sign up for a strategy session. If you want to give a TEDx talk and need help putting together the idea to apply to speak or if you’ve already been selected and need to create the talk itself, my team is here for you. We help you find your one core idea that’s an idea worth spreading and then we work with you to create the talk, word by word, line by line. It’s an intense process but incredibly rewarding, as you’ll hear Tammy talk about in this episode. Email me at carol@speakingyourbrand.com to learn more. Right now, I’m coaching several of the speakers for the TEDxOrlando event that’s at the end of October 2018. We’re busily editing and finalizing the scripts (8 minutes is not a lot of time so we really have to stay on the core idea). It’s a lot of fun for me, not so sure for the speakers right now, but I know they’ll have fun once they’re done. :-) About My Guest: Tammy Lally is a Certified Money Coach, TED speaker, and author of “Money Detox.” She helps others master their finances by first conquering their emotions around money, then by creating a comprehensive financial plan. If you’ve been wanting to do a TEDx talk, this episode is perfect for you. My guest Tamsen Webster and I talk about everything TEDx, including what are the 3 key elements that make a great TEDx talk and how to know if you have a TED-worthy idea (“an idea worth spreading”). Tamsen was the Executive Producer of one of the oldest and one of the largest locally organized TED talk events in the world, so she shares how she found speakers and what she looked for in TEDx applications (this may surprise you!). You definitely don’t have to be a professional speaker to be selected for TEDx, but you do need to have authority and passion. About My Guest: Tamsen Webster is an acclaimed keynote speaker, “idea whisperer,” and message strategist. She combined 20 years in marketing, 13 years as a Weight Watchers leader, and four years as Executive Producer of one of the oldest and one of the largest locally organized TED talk events in the world into a simple structure for understanding, talking about, and creating lasting change. As a result, she is an in-demand consultant on finding the ideas that move people to action. The Speaking Your Brand podcast is hosted by Carol Cox. Highlights: The 3 key elements of a great TEDx talk Examples of universalizing your personal story How to know if you have a TED-worthy idea What TEDx organizers look for in applications How some TEDx organizers find speakers Why you should not do a TEDx talk as a business booster or marketing effort How to rehearse and the pros and cons of memorizing your talk Links: Show notes at https://www.speakingyourbrand.com/56 Visit Tamsen’s website at http://tamsenwebster.com/ Tammy Lally on What It Takes to Do a TEDx Talk - Episode 24 Join the free Speaking Your Brand community at https://www.speakingyourbrand.com/join/ or text the word SPEAKING to 444-999. What does it take to get known? How can you become the “go to” person for what you do? You know you need to be more visible in order to grow your business and network and to achieve your goals. But, there’s a lot of noise out there: not only competition, but things competing for people’s attention AND people not being clear about what exactly you do, who you do it for, and the outcomes you get for them. What you need are the 3 C’s of Visibility: Consistency, Courage, and Community (plus a bonus 4th C). I share with you the ways to be consistent for it to make an impact; why being an advocate and standing up can get you known (but why it’s scary to do so); and why having support can make all the difference, including places we need to show up where we might not be right now (hand raised). I do get on a bit of a soap box about why, as a society, we need you as a woman to be more visible and why you’re not the only one who benefits when you do. At the end of the episode, I share with you the key visibility areas for me that significantly grew my revenue last year. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this episode and where you’re going to focus in 2018! I encourage you to also listen to episode 45, where I go over four different visibility roadmaps you can use, depending on what stage your business is in, to identify where you should focus your time and efforts. The Speaking Your Brand podcast is hosted by Carol Cox. Highlights: Why you need visibility for your business 3 C’s of Visibility = Consistency, Courage, Community 3 ways you need to be consistent Examples from my own business about the impact of consistency Why putting yourself out there and speaking up feels so vulnerable The physiological effects of vulnerability The ancestral memory we as women have of vulnerability Why we need more women in positions of power and leadership What those around you get from you being visible Having allies and advocates The 4th bonus C The key visibility areas for me that significantly grew my revenue last year Links: Show notes at https://www.speakingyourbrand.com/50 Join the free Speaking Your Brand community at https://www.speakingyourbrand.com/join/ or text the word SPEAKING to 444-999.
