Oh That’s Deep Black Women Conversations

Does having children determine who you should date—or is love more complicated than a checklist? This week on Oh That's Deep: Black Women Conversations, Jănine and Nicole kick things off with the joyful recap of Nicole's wedding weekend in Port Antonio, Jamaica. From unforgettable food and nonstop dancing to heartfelt vows and a beautiful new chapter, a time was definitely had! In “What's on Our Timeline?”, a viral debate sparks some real questions: Should women with children leave childless men for childless women? Jănine and Nicole unpack dating preferences, double standards, blended families, and the importance of understanding the why behind your relationship requirements. Are your boundaries protecting your peace—or closing the door on a meaningful connection? In “Letters From Our Listeners,” a divorced mother says she's open to dating fathers—but only under certain conditions. Is she being honest about what she can handle, or expecting someone else's parenting responsibilities to fit neatly into her life? The ladies weigh in on compatibility, co-parenting, and protecting the stability you've built for yourself and your child. Finally, the “Motivational Moment” invites some honest self-reflection: Having preferences doesn't make you a hypocrite, but are you willing to offer the same acceptance you're asking someone else to give you? Until we meet again… Pray. Work. Slay. And show off your melanated excellence. Find more shows like this on the Mean Ole Lion app. Follow, rate, comment, and share.

What if the thing that isn't working in your life doesn't mean you failed? What if it simply means it's time for a new take? In this episode of Motivational Moments with Maria, Maria explores what happens when a career, relationship, goal, or season of life no longer feels like it fits. Instead of treating setbacks as the end of the story, she invites us to cut, reset, and try another way. Sometimes growth means stopping, reflecting on what we've learned, and choosing what to do differently next. With her signature honesty and humor, Maria reminds us that we are allowed to edit, evolve, and begin again. The question is: Where in your life are you treating one bad take like it's the end of the movie? Your story is still being written. You get another take.

Imagine helping your boyfriend get dressed for his best friend's wedding—only to discover that he wasn't a groomsman. He was the groom. This week on Oh That's Deep: Black Women Conversations, Nicole is six days away from her destination wedding and preparing to transport welcome bags, programs and plenty of other wedding essentials to Jamaica. Meanwhile, Jănine has planned multiple looks for the celebration and is deciding just how much she intends to let hang out at the welcome party. The ladies talk wedding attire, body confidence, stretch marks, surgery scars and choosing whatever makes you feel comfortable in your own skin. During “What's on Our Timeline?”, Jănine shares the unbelievable story of a woman who helped her boyfriend prepare for what she believed was his best friend's wedding. After he failed to come home, a suspicious phone call and a Facebook search revealed the truth: her boyfriend had married another woman. Nicole and Jănine debate who knew what, whether the new wife was also being deceived and what should happen when a man proves that he belongs to the streets. In “Letters From Our Listeners,” a friend writes about discovering that the man she dated for nearly four years had maintained another relationship, shared a home and raised a child with someone else. She asks how manipulators become so skilled at living double lives—and how intelligent, successful women can protect themselves from people who lie without hesitation. The ladies discuss trust, overlooked red flags, gaslighting, intuition and why walking away is sometimes the only answer you need. During the “Motivational Moment,” Nicole offers this reminder: “A manipulator doesn't just steal your time; they steal your trust and your own intuition. Your healing begins the moment you believe in yourself again.” Until we meet again… Pray. Work. Slay. And show off your melanated excellence. What do people feel after they've spent time with you? Not what they think about you, but how they feel. In this episode of Motivational Moments with Maria, Maria reflects on her recent national park adventure and the unexpected lesson she brought home: we leave something behind everywhere we go. From the energy we bring into a room to the connections we create, our attitude and presence can impact people in ways we may never realize. Maria shares why connection doesn't need an agenda, how we can become a bridge for others, and why enthusiasm, curiosity, and encouragement can create possibility. She also challenges you to make one meaningful connection this week and ask yourself: What do people consistently experience when they experience me? Because every conversation, every interaction, and every moment is an opportunity to leave something good behind.

Oh That’s Deep Black Women Conversations

Jănine and Nicole catch up as Nicole prepares for her wedding and the realities of blending two established lives, while Jănine celebrates returning to work after surgery—and confesses to a slightly out-of-control TikTok fragrance-shopping habit. In “What's on Our Timeline?”, the ladies unpack a girls' trip that never existed. After collecting $1,200 from each friend, the organizer uses the money to pay her bills, leaving the group stranded at the airport. Was financial desperation behind the betrayal—or was this friendship-ending theft? Then, in “Letters From Our Listeners,” a listener discovers that a close friend copied his professional accomplishments, credentials, and entire sections of his résumé before applying to his company. When helping a friend becomes being taken advantage of, can that trust ever be restored? Finally, the “Motivational Moment” reminds us that not every ending is a loss. Sometimes God exposes a shady friend—not to punish them, but to protect you. Until we meet again… Pray. Work. Slay. And show off your melanated excellence. Meanwhile, Dr. Nicole Plenty takes listeners inside the politics of wedding planning, from missed RSVP deadlines to guests who refuse to accept that the list is closed. During “What's on Our Timeline?”, Jănine and Nicole examine troubling social media stories from biracial adults who say they experienced racism, prejudice, or discomfort with Blackness inside their own families. The ladies discuss whether love alone is enough when raising a child across racial lines, the responsibility parents have to confront their biases, and why shared values and self-awareness matter more than appearances. In “Letters From Our Listeners,” a biracial woman questions her childhood after recognizing a pattern in her white mother's comments about her hair, Black women, and her dark-skinned Black fiancé. Is she unfairly rewriting the past—or can someone genuinely love individual Black people while still holding racist beliefs? Jănine and Nicole offer two very different perspectives on parental love, racial bias, accountability, and grace. This week on Oh That's Deep: Black Women Conversations, Jănine and Nicole start with some wedding-week chaos—from Nicole's bridal alterations nightmare to destination wedding logistics, RSVPs, and Janine's very serious commitment to making sure the Jamaica welcome party happens. Then the conversation gets deep. In What's on Our Timeline?, Jănine brings a viral social media series featuring high school students struggling with basic reading, comprehension, and math. What begins as a reaction to the videos quickly becomes a much larger conversation about Black children, literacy, education, parenting, school systems, learning disabilities, access to resources, social media, and the responsibility of the community. Nicole and Jănine don't agree on everything—particularly when it comes to where accountability begins—but they agree on what's at stake. Literacy isn't simply about passing a class. It affects our ability to understand contracts, manage money, advocate for ourselves, navigate healthcare, pursue careers, build wealth, and function independently. And if children are reaching high school without those fundamental skills, pointing fingers isn't enough. We have to ask what happened to the village—and what it will take to rebuild it. In Letters From Our Listeners, a concerned listener asks the question at the heart of the episode: How do we help children who are already struggling without shaming them—and how do we demand more from the systems that continue to fail them? Janine and Nicole talk about positive reinforcement, community responsibility, grassroots solutions, parental accountability, and why lifting the next generation requires all of us. And in the Motivational Moment, the ladies reflect on Malcolm X's reminder that education is the passport to the future—and why preparing our children for that future begins today. What happens when loving a child, raising a child, and being recognized as that child's mother don't all belong to the same person? This week, Janine and Nicole catch up on life, exhaustion, upcoming surgery, birthdays—and why sometimes getting a little rest feels like an accomplishment all by itself. The conversation also opens the door to a future discussion about Janine's journey with fibroids and the importance of women advocating for their health. Then, in What's on Our Timeline?, the ladies unpack a viral video involving a stepmother confronting her young stepson after he asks to spend Mother's Day with his biological mother. What begins as a conversation about appreciation quickly becomes something much deeper: abandonment, blended-family dynamics, privacy, a child's right to love both a biological parent and a stepparent, and whether adults sometimes expect children to meet emotional needs they were never responsible for carrying. In Letters From Our Listeners, a stepmother who has helped raise her husband's daughter since she was three admits she's beginning to resent watching the teenager continue to seek love and approval from an inconsistent biological mother. After years of showing up, sacrificing and caring for her stepdaughter, she asks a difficult question: Is she wrong for wanting to be seen? Janine and Nicole have thoughts—and, as usual, they don't completely agree on how much a stepparent should sacrifice. Finally, the Motivational Moment is for everyone who has ever quietly poured into others without receiving the recognition they deserve: being overlooked doesn't make you unimportant, and your consistency, sacrifice and presence matter more than you may ever know. Because sometimes the deepest conversations aren't about choosing sides. They're about remembering who needs protecting most—and understanding that love isn't a competition. First, the ladies catch up on life, from Nicole's adventures at sea to Janine's ongoing health journey—and a little disagreement over whether Janine should be anywhere near Nicole's upcoming bachelorette festivities. Then, **What's on Our Timeline?** takes the conversation much deeper. A mother admits that although she loves her children, if she could do it all over again, she wouldn't become a mother. Can you love your children and still regret motherhood? Janine and Nicole unpack pregnancy, postpartum emotions, identity, sacrifice, the expectations placed on Black women, and why we need to make room for women to say what they're really feeling—even when it makes us uncomfortable. In **Letters From Our Listeners**, Adam writes in with an emotional dilemma of his own. He believes his wife regrets becoming a mother—and he fears their children are beginning to feel her emotional distance. What do you do when you love your spouse, love your children, and aren't sure everyone wants the same life anymore? Janine and Nicole weigh counseling, building a stronger village, bringing in additional support, protecting the marriage and, above all, making sure the children have what they need. Finally, in the **Motivational Moment**, the words of Zora Neale Hurston offer the perfect reflection for this conversation: *“There are years that ask questions and years that answer.”* Sometimes the answers about who we are—and who we want to become—don't arrive when we expect them to. After catching up on a week filled with unexpected twists—from work frustrations to car mishaps—Janine and Nicole dive into a relationship trend that's taking over social media: "monogamish." In this week's What's on Our Timeline?, the ladies unpack the growing conversation around relationships that blur the lines between monogamy and open partnerships. Is "monogamish" simply honesty replacing secrecy, or is it just infidelity with better branding? Janine and Nicole explore the importance of communication, boundaries, emotional intimacy, and whether some relationship arrangements create more complications than clarity. The conversation takes an even deeper turn when they read a heartfelt listener letter from a woman questioning whether the relationship structure she agreed to is slowly costing her the love—and the sense of self—she's worked so hard to build. As her partner develops an emotional connection with someone outside of their relationship, the hosts offer candid, compassionate advice about self-worth, intuition, healthy boundaries, and recognizing when compromise becomes self-abandonment. Drawing from Nicole's perspective as an OB/GYN and Janine's faith-centered approach to relationships, this episode tackles everything from emotional attachment and trust to sexual health, commitment, and the courage it takes to choose yourself. The episode closes with a powerful Motivational Moment from James Baldwin: "Love takes off the mask that we fear we cannot live without and know we cannot live within." Welcome to this week's episode of Motivational Moments with Maria.  This day 6 years ago I took a giant leap of faith.  I stepped down from a Coaching Position I loved to branch out on my own and it was the best thing I could have done for myself and the clients I serve.I was scared, I was worried and I know one thing…when I make a commitment to do something, I will make it happen. I follow the framework I developed for myself and today seems like the perfect time to share it with you.  It's a New Year and I want you to navigate your next chapter with confidence and courage. Welcome to the 6 Cs of Your Personal Shift: Navigating Your Next Chapter with Confidence and Courage. I'm so glad you're here.In today's episode you'll get a practical, compassionate framework—the 6 Cs—to move from stuck to in motion, and a clear next step to keep your momentum going after we finish.Let's discuss why you are here and why you listen in to these podcasts or for that matter any podcast on personal development. Naming what's going on for you reduces shame and increases choice.I hear these quite a bit so if it resonates with you, then you have tuned in to the right channel:1.Feeling stuck and unsure what comes next. You know you want a change, but you're not sure of the direction, the steps, or how to start. That's normal—and it's the biggest driver for seeking guidance2.Losing confidence in yourself and your decisions. Maybe you've felt disconnected from your inner strength and want to trust your voice again.3.Feeling disconnected from purpose or a meaningful “why.” You crave alignment—something that feels exciting, grounded, intentional.4.You are a lifelong learner and know that personal growth is a way of life.If any of these resonate, you're where you need to be. And answer this, what gets in your way?•Overwhelm from trying to manage everything alone. Life is heavy: responsibilities, expectations, emotions. You don't need more pressure—you need structure and support.•Lack of consistency and accountability. You start motivated, but momentum fades without a system and a community. Here's a truth: people don't plug into personal development and coaching for information—they buy it for consistency because Consistency turns intention into results.Today I'll walk you through six anchors for sustainable change: Commitment, Courage, Consistency, Confidence, Challenge, and Candor. These words have helped me over the years stay on track in my life and they are visible to me every day. Listen in for insights on the 6 Cs to success. Stay focused, stay positive and always have fun.Coach Maria

You get to choose what you believe — and how your next chapter unfolds.

The Power of Compartmentalizing Your Time and ProjectsWelcome my friends to this week's episode of Motivational Moments with Maria. As always, I am inspired, grateful and passionate about the work I do. Every day I wake up and always start the day with this one question: Who needs me on my A game today? When you are a servant leader and know what your purpose and passion is, it's not work, it's a calling—and I get to work at this incredible career.Living your dream life isn't just about the destination – it's found in the work we do, the love we share and sometimes the laughter in the rain.Let me start with a question for you today.Ever finish a day feeling busy but strangely unfinished? I see you nodding your heads. Then what happens? You start to feel guilty that you didn't get everything done and start spending late nights to catch up at the expense of your health—and all of this is the tax you pay for constant context switching. If your brain feels like it has 27 tabs open and one of them is playing mystery music, you are not alone. Today, we're going to give your mind a breather, your calendar a makeover, and your confidence a fresh coat of “Oh yes, I can.”What compartmentalizing really means (and why your brain will thank you) Think of compartmentalizing as giving your time little labeled containers—like Tupperware, but for your focus. You decide what goes in each container, when you open it, and what stays out. No more letting Deep Work sit next to Leftover Guilt.

Hello, beautiful souls, and welcome to Motivational Moments with Maria. I'm so grateful you're here with me today. As we honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month and celebrate the incredible spirit of womanhood, I want you to settle in deeply with this question: Who are you when the roles, the titles, and even your health have been fundamentally challenged? It's a question that hits close to home for many of us, and certainly for me, as a two time breast cancer survivor. Life's major events—those that shake us to our very core—have a way of stripping away all that feels familiar. Suddenly, the identities we've built become fragile or even feel out of reach. It's challenging. And if you've been through something like this, you know the emotional landscape afterwards can feel profoundly lonely. But today, I want to tell you something beautiful: that place you find yourself in, stripped down, vulnerable, searching—is actually fertile ground for growth and transformation. Before we dive into our guide for this week, I want to share something very personal with you—something many of us face but don't often speak aloud. When I first heard the words, “You have breast cancer,” I felt as though time stopped. A flood of emotions overwhelmed me—fear, confusion, and that crushing loneliness that settled heavy in my chest. Suddenly, the future I had imagined slipped away, replaced by uncertainty. But what scared me most were the questions swirling in my mind about my children—What will happen to them if I'm not here? Who will love them the way I do? Who will guide them through their lives? Those thoughts hit me like waves—relentless and frightening.

So, let's dig into the fascinating topic of "The Anatomy of Resilience" and uncover the magic behind this truly admirable quality.Resilience is like a superhero power that deserves a spotlight, so let's roll up our sleeves and uncover its true essence together.Let's make resilience not just insightful, but also super fun to explore! Let's distinguish between resilience and merely bouncing back from challenges. Resilience goes beyond just returning to normal; it involves growth, adaptation, and transformation in the face of adversity. It's like a sturdy tree that bends with the storm but remains rooted and strong.Resilience is more than just bouncing back from adversity; it encompasses a deeper and more nuanced quality involving growth, transformation, and a shift in perspective. While bouncing back implies a return to a previous state after facing challenges, resilience goes beyond that by fostering personal growth and the ability to adapt in the face of adversity[1]. Resilience involves understanding the difference between fate and freedom and taking responsibility for one's life, indicating a proactive and empowered approach to overcoming obstacles[2].Here is an example of resilience that many of you can relate to.  I'm holding a pair of pantyhose…yes I said pantyhose.  Listen in for some thoughts on becoming more resilient.Until Next Time...Stay focused, stay positive and always have fun.Coach Maria

Weed Out Your Limiting Beliefs: Create Space for Growth

Welcome back my thrivers and strivers to this week's captivating episode of Motivational Moments with Maria.  This entire month we are focusing on spring cleaning as we realign, renew and rise.  Last week we chatted about planting the seeds in the spring and how we must plant, cultivate, nurture and water before we can harvest.  Just like in farming, part of the process of having a bountiful and healthy harvest is removing the weeds so we can clear space for growth. The same holds true for our well being.  Just as a farmer tends to their crops, we must cultivate our own potential. However, lurking amidst the fertile soil of our minds are weeds—limiting beliefs that stunt our growth and hold us back from reaching our full potential.By uprooting the weeds of doubt and fear, we create space for growth, resilience, and infinite possibilities. As you embark on your own journey of personal transformation, remember that with each weed removed, you step closer to a life filled with abundance and flourishing potential.Just What are those Limiting Beliefs?Limiting beliefs are those deeply ingrained thoughts and ideas that convince us we are unworthy, incapable, or undeserving of success and happiness. These beliefs come from our childhood experiences, societal conditioning, or past traumas. They can manifest in various forms, such as "I'm not good enough", "I don't deserve to be happy", or "I'll never succeed".Limiting beliefs are like insidious weeds that take root in the garden of our minds, hindering our progress and potential. These beliefs, often shaped by past experiences and societal influences, can manifest in various forms, from self-doubt to fear of failure. By exploring their origins and acknowledging their impact, we can begin to uproot these barriers to personal growth and transformation.Understanding the origins of our limiting beliefs is the first step towards overcoming them. By exploring the root causes of these beliefs, we can begin to unravel the layers of conditioning and self-doubt that hold us back from living a fulfilling life.Listen for some thoughts on how to weed out those beliefs to create space for new growth.Stay focused, stay positive, and always have fun. Coach Maria

It is your guide, your map on how we live our lives and let me explain. It started a long time ago and the best way to explain this is through the story of John.John was a young immigrant boy who grew up in Southern California in poverty.  His family was poor and he worked the fields side by side with his parents. He was told…this is what we do! He never had new clothes, just hand me downs from other siblings.  When he went to school, there were many others like him but there were others that made fun of him and teased him because he was different.  He was of Hispanic descent and the color of this skin was different. Other children made fun of him.  He spoke another language and people teased him and laughed at him because of his accent.  Tune in to hear about John's transformation. As always, stay focused, stay positive and always have fun. Coach Maria
