Who gets to have an opinion about technology? Whose perspectives are invited into these conversations - and who is ignored, downplayed or written out completely? Bridget Todd was fed up with the gatekeeping around technology - how it was discussed, who were the default leaders confidently making pronouncements and predictions, whose stories weren't being told - so she started a podcast, "There Are No Girls On The Internet," to explore the many ways in which marginalized voices shape technology and digital culture. Fast forward and her podcast has been showered with awards and critical acclaim, and Bridget is a leading voice on technology and culture. In this episode of "Your New Life Blend" she joins host Shoshanna Hecht to discuss her winding journey through the minefields of the media industry to get here (pour one out for whatever we thought we knew about media back in 2012), the joys and perils of entrepreneurship vs. a steady paycheck, and how important it is to our own identities to know that we are qualified to speak about the systems and industries that affect our lives. We are so thrilled to be back with this amazing conversation with Bridget Todd, an amazing trailblazer and thinker as "Your New Life Blend" returns after our summer hiatus! Award winning podcaster, Bridget Todd, sits down with The Two Jess(es) to talk about how marginalized people show up online, and how disinformation (purposely spreading incorrect information to further one's agenda) and misinformation (spreading inaccurate information with no intention of causing harm) is really a racial, gender, justice and democratic issue. Bridget created her critically acclaimed podcast, “There Are No Girls On The Internet” to explore how marginalized people show up online in response to the lack of diversity in conversations around social media platforms and misinformation. There is no shortage of conversation points as Bridget shares openly about her own experiences with dis- & mis- information as a woman, and particular a woman of color. Bridget shares about what it means to be a good steward of the internet and how critically important it is to us as a society to slow down, take a beat, and ownership considering what could be true and what could be false, and how we share both with our communities.Meet Bridget!Bridget Todd is a frequently cited expert, trainer, and speaker on combating disinformation, conspiracy theories, and extremism online advocating for social media platform accountability. Creating safer digital experiences for women and other marginalized people as well as celebrating and amplifying marginalized people's contributions to tech and the internet is what caused Bridget to create her critically acclaimed podcast There Are No Girls on the Internet to explore how marginalized people show up online in response to the lack of inclusion in conversations around the internet. Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to pay tribute to this thing called Beyoncé's internet. No, not today's digital hellscape, but the one we first fell in love with way back in ye olde days of AOL, Napster, and LiveJournal. *dial up bings and gurgles* This week, Josh and Tracy reminisce on how being online once had the potential to affirm us. How did we go from that to *gestures at the entire World Wide Web* whatever mess this is? And how can we imagine and create a better cyber world for us, by us? To help answer these questions, we'll be joined by two people we would definitely rank in our Myspace Top 8, Bridget Todd (digital activist and host of “There Are No Girls On The Internet”) and Naj Austin (founder of Ethel's Club and Somewhere Good).
