The We Should Talk About That podcast is a refreshing and courageous show that tackles tough topics with humor, grace, and intelligence. The hosts, Jess and Jess, have a magical chemistry together and their conversations are both relatable and funny. They dive deep into important subjects that many shy away from, making this podcast a must-listen for anyone who appreciates authenticity and meaningful discussions.
One of the best aspects of this podcast is the way the hosts approach difficult subjects head-on. They don't shy away from uncomfortable conversations but instead embrace them with open minds and hearts. Their courage to tackle these topics is inspiring, and it creates an environment where listeners feel safe to explore their own thoughts and feelings on these issues. The interactions between the two hosts are engaging and thought-provoking, with deep questions that get to the soul of the topic at hand.
Another great aspect of this podcast is its ability to bring lightness and humor to serious topics. The hosts strike a perfect balance between sobriety and humor, which is necessary when discussing challenging subjects. This ability to find humor in difficult situations helps create a more relatable experience for listeners while still acknowledging the seriousness of the topic at hand.
While it's hard to find any significant flaws in this podcast, one possible downside could be that some episodes may be too emotional or heavy for certain listeners. The raw honesty displayed by the hosts can lead to intense moments that may trigger strong emotions in some individuals. However, it's important to note that this emotional depth is also one of the strengths of the show as it allows for genuine connections with the audience.
In conclusion, The We Should Talk About That podcast is a gem in the world of podcasts. Its ability to tackle tough subjects with vulnerability, humor, and intelligence sets it apart from other shows. Whether you're looking for deep insights or just a good laugh, this podcast delivers on all fronts. I highly recommend adding it to your playlist and joining in on the honest, thought-provoking conversations that Jess and Jess bring to the table.
Send me a Text Message about the show!We should talk about divorce. I mean, talk about a topic that absolutely fits the theme of this show: talking about the things people DON'T want to talk about. Divorce is gotta be top three. Right? And it is definitely a topic that leaves those going through it feeling very isolated and alone. Because, no one wants to talk about it. Sharing a life with someone is hard. Raising kids is hard. Aging is hard. Changing is hard. I mean, it's just hard. And requires attention and work. And I just do not think there are enough resources out there for people who need it. Especially ones that can be utilized early enough that they can actually make a difference. Which is why I am so happy to be talking to my guest today.Doctor Becky Whetstone is a licensed marriage and family therapist and nationally recognized expert on marriage crisis and divorce recovery. She sped up the corporate ladder at the biggest beauty brands, rising to the C-Suite level. She was the picture of success. And then, on the night of her 35th birthday, her past came calling. One minute, she was laughing over wine; the next, she was curled up in the fetal position. All she could think about was her mom, passing a crack pipe, and her grandmother, ripped from her in a car accident. She embarked on a FOUR-YEAR deep dive into how the brain and body work. Send me a Text Message about the show!Nicole Graev Lipson is the author of Mothers and Other Fictional Characters, which is a memoir written in essay form. Each essay in the book provides insight into her experience inl the many roles that she, and other women often feel pressure to play. With a goal of going beyond the ready made stories of womanhood, she has managed to provide a very revealing and affirming picture of the woman she has become today-as well as who she is still becoming. I was particularly drawn to her essay about her IVF journey, "Very Nice Blastocysts," which is all about her struggle to determine what to do with her three frozen embryos left over from a successful round of IVF. I invited Nicole on to have one of my favorite types of conversations, a both/and one. Send me a Text Message about the show!I'm a little late to highlight rare disease month. Technically, the month of February traditionally is Rare Disease awareness month with Rare Disease Day falling on February 28th. But, sadly, as is happening with so many awareness months and days in the US, the FDA/NIH planned 2 day meeting focused on Rare Disease Day on 2/27 and 2/28 was cancelled this year. So, I guess I'm not too late after all, and instead I'm declaring today, the day you are listening to this podcast to be Rare Disease Day. A day to raise awareness for the 300 million people world wide living with a rare disease. A rare disease is when a disease affects fewer than 1 in 2000 people. And that rareness causes significant challenges. A lack of scientific knowledge and study about these diseases can make diagnosis more difficult. Many people with a rare disease spend a long time being misdiagnosed and therefore unable to access the types of treatments or support best suited for their actual disease. Funding for research can be harder to find when you are studying a disease that impacts a smaller proportion of the population. And yet, that smaller proportion does not make the difficulty of living with a rare disease any easier. So awareness is incredibly important, to bring attention to those with rare disease, to create support and community, and to encourage research. And today, I have two women as my guests on the show that are living with a rare disease.Avery Roberts resides in New York, and is a wearer of many hats — an advocate, dancer, foodie, and avid traveler. She was the first wheelchair user to perform on the great stage of the world-renowned Radio City Musical Hall in New York City, as well as, separately, among the first few wheelchair users to feature in a nationally televised live production, where she appeared as a dancer.Kelly Berger resides in Cincinnati, Ohio, and is a passionate advocate for rare disease, winning a 2024 RareVoice Award. She adores live music and is always attending a concert, typically driving states away to see her favorites. Kelly utilizes her adapted mobility van as her means of independence fueling her thirst for constant travel adventures—she's explored over 40 states and counting. They both have Congenital Muscular Dystrophy or CMD for short and they both were recently on Capitol Hill lobbying for Rare disease the last week in February. Send me a Text Message about the show! The broken rung: a phenomenon even more pervasive than the glass ceiling in holding women back from career success. Women around the world do extremely well when it comes to their education. They graduate at higher rates than men do and have higher average GPAs. But then a strange thing happens: Upon entering the workforce, they immediately lose their advantage. When the first promotions come around, the slide continues—for every 100 men who are promoted to manager, only 81 women get promoted. Women risk falling behind far before they are even tapping the “glass ceiling”.So, what should we do about that? Especially in a climate where talking about diversity, equity, and inclusion has become the third rail of business development?McKinsey senior partners Kweilin Ellingrud, Lareina Yee, and María del Mar Martínez have written a new book, THE BROKEN RUNG: When the Career Ladder Breaks for Women--and How They Can Succeed in Spite of It. The book is based on over a decade of McKinsey research, conversations with more than 50 remarkable leaders, and their own experiences as senior partners working with companies and women leaders. Send me a Text Message about the show!Time to do an update on how things are going in the Department of Education now that we are 623 days into the Trump administration. Wait, no…..I'm being told it has actually been 27 days. I'm sorry. So when I last spoke about the Dept of Education, it was November 18th and I was reacting to the release of then President elect Trump's 10 point education plan.I did an overview on the history of the Department of Education and an overview of the programs in which the Department oversees. As President Trump said in a press conference from the Oval office on February 13th, “I'd like to close the department of education immediately”. Although his nominee for Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon is still going through her confirmation hearing, she has echoed this goal, although perhaps on a slightly slower timeline than the President has said. Send me a Text Message about the show!I am overwhelmed. There is so much information coming out each day that it becomes difficult to figure out what I should pay attention to -and I think that is the point. Flood the zone so no one thing can catch too much attention and so many many issues just flow right past us without notice. That's why I have been really trying to use discernment on the places I count on to get my information. And I want to be transparent with you so that you know the lens that I see things through. In today's episode, I share with you where I'm going to keep myself informed on the new administration and the changes that are being made. I'll link to the three places I specifically mentioned at the end of the show notes.Additionally, as I have been casting a net to try and figure out who I should be talking to and sharing with you, the WeSTAT community it occurred to me that I have already talked to so many knowledgeable and incredible people over the past five years of doing this podcast. But as with many things, as new information comes in, old information gets pushed farther back and out of the spotlight. So today, I want to pull something from the past and place it squarely back into the now. Jamie Bruesehoff is an award-winning advocate, sought-after speaker, and heartfelt writer. She is an openly queer woman married to a Lutheran pastor and mom to three spirited children, including an eighteen-year-old transgender daughter. She is passionate about sharing her family's story, because she believes our stories are bridges to understanding, compassion, and celebration. My conversation with Jamie was so helpful to me to help me understand my own confusion about transgender people. And now, more than ever, I think a conversation with someone from that community is essential to de-stigmatizing this population. As Laverne Cox said BRILLIANTLY this week, "Trans people make up 1% of the population and we are not the reason your groceries are expensive, or your rent is too high. I think this country is focusing on the wrong 1%." Send me a Text Message about the show!I said "wow" so much in this episode, and I even edited A LOT out. But talking with Sarah Beran and Brooks Bell about their separate journeys with colon cancer - both diagnosed when they were under 40(!) - left me almost speechless.Today, they're survivors who have dedicated their lives to making sure others have access to early, life-saving colonoscopies. Brooks, a tech entrepreneur, and Sarah, a celebrity stylist, faced the terrifying reality that their cancers could have been prevented with earlier detection as regular screenings can detect precancerous polyps before they turn into cancer. Projected to become the leading cancer killer of adults under 50 by 2030, colon cancer is unique in that it is preventable! So Sarah and Brooks are launching Worldclass on Giving Tuesday, a non-profit apparel brand designed to raise awareness about colon cancer, where 100% of profits will go directly toward increasing access to colonoscopies for underserved communities. Something that needs to be actively worked on and done, rather than just accepting it as a thing that will always exist.Personally, I don't think the Department of Education should be shut down. Lindsey explains that civics education is often deprioritized in schools, leading to a lack of understanding among adults. She emphasizes the need for parents to take on the responsibility of teaching their children about citizenship and government. Lindsey outlines five key skills that children should learn: -how to register to vote, -the difference between primary and general elections, -understanding federalism, -reading the constitution, -and being comfortable with having hard conversations. In January I participated in a women's healing retreat with the Mystic Chics. a healing group of 3 modern medicine women, 2 sisters and an aunt, who are passionate about awakening feminine power using multiple modalities of healing via energy, music, sound, movement and more. I'm not a total "woo" person, but I'm also not a total cynic. Let's say I fall somewhere in between-we'll call it curious. So I asked one of the Chics, Audrey Herrick, to come on the show to talk about my experience and energy healing as a whole. Audrey Herrick is 1/3 of The Mystic Chics, a healing group of 3 modern medicine women, 2 sisters and an aunt, who are passionate about awakening feminine power using multiple modalities of healing via energy, music, sound, movement and more. They are here for the woman who is ready to see herself as the spiritually inspired creator she is and wants to step forward using the power of her own energy. They resonate with the woman who is curious as well as serious about her evolution and who is unafraid of her own Truth as well as the potential power she holds within her to create a better Earth. You can find out more about the Mystic Chics athttps://themysticchics.com/Support the Show.Keep up with all things WeSTAT on any (or ALL) of the social feeds:InstagramThreads : westatpodFacebookLinkedInTwitterHave a topic or want to stay in touch via e-mail on all upcoming news?https://www.westatpod.com/Help monetarily support the podcast by subscribing to the show! Have you heard of synesthesia? It is when your brain routes sensory information through multiple unrelated senses, causing you to experience more than one sense simultaneously. Some examples include tasting words or linking colors to numbers and letters. My guest this week, Emily Barth Isler, is an author of essays and children's books, including the middle grade novels AfterMath and The Color of Sound, which was published March 5, 2024. The Color of Sound features a character who, like Emily, has synesthesia. It has received starred reviews from both Publishers Weekly and the School Library Journal. I first met Emily on my other podcast, Neuroversity, to talk about her first book, AfterMath, which is an award-winning middle grade novel about grief, resilience, friendship, math, and mime. Emily and I quickly realized that there were so many things we should talk about that I promised to get her on WeSTAT and the release of her new book seemed like the perfect fit.Find out more about Emily hereSupport the Show.Keep up with all things WeSTAT on any (or ALL) of the social feeds:InstagramThreads : westatpodFacebookLinkedInTwitterHave a topic or want to stay in touch via e-mail on all upcoming news?https://www.westatpod.com/Help monetarily support the podcast by subscribing to the show! I have a few things we should talk about this week!Do you think I need a permanent co-host?Why is it so hard to get people to talk on the show?Is Taylor Swift causing friendships to end?MahjongIt's a random assortment. Did you know that the six most common complaints about the sound of a women's voice are:Their voice is too highThey sound like childrenThey don't sound authoritative enoughThey have vocal fryThey use too much upspeakTheir voice is too lowFor a woman who wants to speak up publicly, it can start to feel like we are damned if we do, and damned if we don't. It was a fascinating AND frustrating conversation.I hope you'll listen!Guest Bio:Christine Adam is an international voice, accent and communication skills coach. I am a proud voting American. From local, national, primary, or general, I never miss my opportunity to participate in my civic duty and cherished right to vote. I love the process of going to my polling precinct and casting my ballot. I slap that sticker on my chest and walk around all day with pride, knowing that instead of choosing to do nothing, I chose to vote. And I believe, that my vote is counted. It may not win, but it is always counted. But I am aware that I may be in the minority who believes that my vote is counted. In January 2024, Data for Progress found that 43% of likely voters are either not confident at all or only a little confident in the security of elections. That percentage rises to 50% if you only look at registered Independents and rises to 69% if you only look at registered Republicans. That is a lot of Americans who do not trust the security of our elections! I wanted to learn more about the election process. To see if there is a reason to not trust the system, or to see if this growing mistrust is fueled by misinformation. My guest this week is Tate Fall, Director of Elections for Cobb County Georgia. She guides me through the history and process of administering elections, shares how much elections have changed through the years, and dispels some of the most common myths about voter fraud. This is a conversation you are not going to want to miss.Tate Fall currently serves as the Director of Elections for Cobb County. She has previously served as the Deputy Director of Elections for Arlington County, VA, a Communications Specialist for the United States Election Assistance Commission (EAC), and as a Voting Rights Advocate for Alabama Disabilities Advocacy Program. Tate has her B.S. in Rehabilitation and Disability Studies, a Master of Public Administration and a Graduate Certificate in Election Administration all from Auburn University. We should talk about Tik Tok. As a Gen X-er, I cling to my Facebook and I feel fancy that I consistently use Instagram. But if I'm being honest, I know that this makes me basically an elderly user of social media apps. YouTube and Tik Tok are the social media apps where Gen Z and Gen Alpha are spending the majority of their time. So, what's an "Insta-Grandma" to do to try and stay au courant on the trends?Enter my guest, Pamela Wurst Vetrini.Pamela is a content creator, content curator, and social media consultant. Vetrini gained a following of over 150,000 followers by translating tik tok trends for an elder millennial audience. After working in marketing and PR in publishing in NYC, she decided to focus on learning how to use social media during her time as a stay at home mom. Vetrini's greatest viral success came in the summer of 2023 when she curated a reality tv "season" of private chefs in the Hamptons from existing tik tok content. https://www.instagram.com/pamelawurstvetrini/https://www.tiktok.com/@pamelawurstvetriniJoin us for a discussion on why Tik Tok isn't evil, and what has been trending on the app for March 2024.Support the showKeep up with all things WeSTAT on any (or ALL) of the social feeds:InstagramThreads : westatpodFacebookLinkedInTwitterHave a topic or want to stay in touch via e-mail on all upcoming news?https://www.westatpod.com/Help monetarily support the podcast by subscribing to the show! We Should Talk About That is going on a break for a couple of weeks for a little refresh and re-tooling. But before I go, I want to take a minute to honor a man who has meant so very much to me, my father in law, Vernard Charles Kidwell, Jr.Vern passed away February 4th, 2024 at the ripe age of 98 and I am just back from a weekend of honoring him and his incredible life. A WWII veteran and celebrated jazz trumpet player, Vern lived many chapters and I wanted to do my small part in honoring and remembering him by documenting his memory in my little podcast, or as he would always refer to it, my "television show". I sure did love this man and I invite you to spend 15 minutes with me to honor him as well.Support the showKeep up with all things WeSTAT on any (or ALL) of the social feeds:InstagramThreads : westatpodFacebookLinkedInTwitterHave a topic or want to stay in touch via e-mail on all upcoming news?https://www.westatpod.com/Help monetarily support the podcast by subscribing to the show! In September 2017, after years of physical abuse and sexual torture, Nicole "Nikki" Addimando fatally shot her abusive partner in self-defense. And in February 2020, Nicole was sentenced to 19 years to life in prison for killing the perpetrator of her abuse, where she became part of the 97% of women in prison nationwide who have experienced physical or sexual abuse.Long time listeners of WeSTAT know that I have been personally following this case very closely. In 2021, I had the opportunity to focus on Nikki's case in two episodes: One with Rebecca and Wendy, two representatives of the Nicole Addimando Community Defense Committee, as well as with journalist Justine van der Leun who partnered with Lemonada media and Spiegel and Grau to release a six part award winning podcast about Nikki's case called “Believe Her” .Through all of my following of this case, one person's name comes up over and over, and that is Nikki's sister, Michelle Horton. Since Nikki's arrest in 2017, Michelle has been caring for Nikki's two children, Ben and Faith, quarterbacking her defense strategy and trying to figure out how to support Nikki, herself, and so many others that have been devastated by these events. However, I have never had the opportunity to meet or talk with Michelle, until today.Michelle Horton is a passionate writer and advocate based in New York's Hudson Valley. As the caregiver for Nikki Addimando's children, and a crucial figure in Nikki's defense strategy, Michelle has emerged as a fierce advocate for survivors of domestic violence. Her forthcoming memoir, "Dear Sister," provides an intimate and eye-opening look at the challenges faced by survivors within the criminal justice system. Through her unwavering commitment and personal experiences, Michelle offers a compelling voice in advocating for the rights of survivors and shedding light on the pervasive issue of domestic violence.Buy the bookFor support and resources:Hour Children Survived and PunishedSanctuary for FamiliesCriminalized Survivors ReportSupport the showKeep up with all things WeSTAT on any (or ALL) of the social feeds:InstagramThreads : westatpodFacebookLinkedInTwitterHave a topic or want to stay in touch via e-mail on all upcoming news?https://www.westatpod.com/Help monetarily support the podcast by subscribing to the show!
