This week's episode is a favorite from the Success That Lasts archives. David Miller is the Chief Technology Officer of Dynamic Light, a company that develops next-generation technology for blood flow monitoring. He chats with Jared Siegel about their neurotechnology, entrepreneurship, and mindfulness. Here are a few highlights from their stimulating conversation: Dynamic Light was created based on David’s work on laser speckle contrast imaging. David says the hardest transition during this experience has been moving from the sense of “I know the technology” to the sense of “I don't really know how people are going to view it.”  Innovators like Steve Jobs have the ability to take the perspective of not only the short-term market but also the long-term vision. Hardware and software are being created to profit off of our shortening attention spans, Jared says. If the product we use is “free,” then we are the product. The essence of mindfulness is how long you can stay attentive to the task at hand, David says. Heart Math is a technology created by Dynamic Light for heart rate variability training. The human brain is on average only 2 to 3% of your body mass, but at any point in time, it consumes about 20% of your blood. To David, meditation means getting in touch with his internal subjective experience. When you jump into cold water, you get an extreme flight or fight response from your body, even though there’s no visible threat in front of you. Joy is the meeting place of selflessness and intentionality, Jared quotes. David would like to be remembered as someone who encouraged people to cultivate their inner sense of compassion and kindness. Resources Dynamic Light David Miller on LinkedIn

“The President of the United States summoned this mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack,” said Rep. Liz Cheney late Tuesday afternoon. “Everything that followed was his doing.” This week, our hosts discuss the brewing showdown over impeachment between Cheney—the House’s No.3 Republican—and Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy. How does one party accommodate vastly different levels of acquiescence to a rogue president? What is the value of impeachment and conviction over censure? Should the president be pardoned after conviction in a concession to Republicans? To David, one thing is clear: “He needs to be so thoroughly defeated in the here and now that there is no possibility of a later,” he says. “He has to be deplatformed, he has to be defeated, and he has to be discredited.”   Show Notes: -Take our podcast survey -Amazon filing in response to Parler’s lawsuit, citing violent content -Rep. David White IV founded the O2 Conference, which gives students an opportunity to bring their ideas to life. Based in Hilliard, Ohio, young people from grades 6-12 can use the platform to highlight a need in their community. Whether this is in their home or their school, David emphasized how the conference is designed to encourage and support the ideas behind each student’s endeavor. “We want to see the city thriving, and we believe that young people are super capable. They're world changers. They don't need to be older to make a difference.” - David White IV Students observe needs in their community first-hand, and then express their approach for finding a solution. Applying to the conference allows middle and high school students a different type of inspiration they can tap into. They feel the accountability and ownership in the social change they can supply to the world. In every conference, a few students are chosen through an application process to present an idea at the O2 Conference. The result becomes students being paired with a mentor and receiving $10,000 in funding. Monetary funding can also increase, depending on donations given to a student’s idea. Other than donations, the community plays a huge role in the conference; from a portion of the conference ticket sales going directly towards student projects to the audience voting for the projects they connect with most. Through every step, the students are engaging with the community in the direction of social good. Once a student begins the process of making their project more tangible, it sparks reflection. David has a very honest way of revealing the outcomes of student projects. He explains the highlights and lessons discovered through this collaborative effort of students, mentors, and community. In some cases, the projects rocketed past what was expected. In others, the outcome had more internal value, which in turn can later be transformed into a better external social good gain. To David, all the experiences brought a new perspective to be grateful for. Hosting the O2 Conference is about “Breathing life into Columbus through the ideas of young people”, but David further explains the idea of organizing around an organic need. To hear his take on community initiatives forging participation beyond location boundaries and generation gaps was intriguing. It makes you really think of how one action or exchange can open many doors. David even began to speak about how the O2 Conference became established. He talks about what led to the creation of this platform through his church, Upper Arlington Lutheran Church (UALC). He dips into his own journey embracing his role as a pastor, and what it means to his life. Being involved with helping people in need and creating a space for people to thrive is not a foreign concept for David. I loved hearing him speak of the wonderful, community-centered initiatives he takes joy in. The theme for this year’s O2 Conference is “Thriving Environment”. Middle and high school students have until early January to submit an application for the conference being held in March 2020. Details for registration can be found on the application page. Get caught up with the O2 Conference on Instagram, Facebook, or directly at the O2 Conference website.

David has been a pharmacist for 35 years, having served in both hospital and community pharmacy, and made the switch to academia fourteen years ago. “What excites me the most is the acceptance and willingness of the medical community to utilize the pharmacist and other members of the healthcare team to develop a real team approach to healthcare.” ~David Bowyer David now serves as the Department Chair and Associate Professor at the University of Charleston, where he has 12 pharmacists working under him. To David, pharmacy was a way to remain in healthcare and take care of patients in a different way than other healthcare professionals.

You know those couples that are relentlessly successful, kind, energetic, and so annoyingly in love that you crave their presence? We interviewed that couple today. Megan and David Roche are a powerhouse duo who have had very successful running careers and coach others to have the same. They recently wrote “The Happy Runner” which is a perfect title for what their mission is all about. Their coaching business is called SWAP which stands for some work, all play. To David and Megan, it’s about finding success while focusing on “long-term fulfilment.” If you want to enjoy every day and sluff off the negative feelings that come with overwhelming tasks, listen to this podcast. You’ll be sure to find a few things that change your outlook on what’s important in your running life, while maintaining or increasing your results. Finding Joy in the Journey David and Megan believe in what's termed the Arrival Fallacy. This is an idea we have covered before where focusing on the end and believing the end is what gives us happiness, stops us from enjoying the present. “No matter what your finish line is, you reach it and you realize nothing changes,” says David. The solution to this fallacy? Continuously inject energy into your life. Easier said than done right? David and Megan have found that their dog Addie is the perfect example of finding joy in the journey. Think about it. All happy dogs are ALWAYS happy. Every time you come home your dog is excited to see you. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been gone. Boundless energy is sure to come. For those focused on the future or past, try being excited and grateful about the now. Picturing an open-mouthed dog might do the trick. For the cat lovers, there is another solution. You can get away from focusing on the finish line by changing your goal. Reframing their athletes' goals and making sure they are internally focused is a major part of David and Megan’s coaching. Let yourself be okay with failure by setting goals that are most meaningful to you. Let Hard Things Have an End Along our journey we are sure to run into hard things. Not every moment can be bliss, and if it were it wouldn’t feel that way anyway. You can maintain a consistent positive outlook by acknowledging the hard things and putting them out of mind by giving them an expiration date. Sometimes just knowing when a challenge will end allows you to move forward contently. A good example in Megan’s life was when she was in medical school. Balancing a budding running career with medical school compelled her to train at 3 a.m. This exhausting period of her life was difficult, but she was able to maintain her work load by seeing each four- or eight-week block of school as an end point. Just like breaking down your race by telling yourself to make it to the next tree, you can try this approach to things in life. Focus on accomplishable tasks and give them an end. All Food is Good Food We’ve discussed food frequently on this podcast, ranging from a balanced nutrition to eating disorders. Today we stepped even further back to evaluate food as a whole. Not only are David and Megan against getting on the scale or counting calories, they are generally opposed to looking at food negatively at all. “With athletes, we always try to emphasize that all food is good food,” says Megan. Of course, David and Megan recommend a healthy diet, but it’s about getting back to the fact that all food gives us energy and life. It’s okay to eat the sweets and fatty foods you enjoy. “Food is really fun!” says David. Have moderation, but be excited and happy to eat those things you love. Another coaching emphasis of team SWAP is to love your body the way it is. Everyone has unique genetics, so it is impossible to judge the health of one person based on weight. The focus here is to be healthy, not to weigh the perfect amount. Megan emphasizes this by saying, “It’s always important to err on the side of being a little heavier than being a little lighter.” Give your body enough good food and it will do the rest. More from This Episode: Learn how impulsively adopting a dog from the side of the road changed their life and set them on a path to start their coaching career. Who is David’s hero? What is it like being each other’s coach? And as always, the Running for Real Four where David and Megan give life advice, tell a Running for Real Moment, and recommend a few people they love to follow on social media. 2 Samuel 22: 1 David prayed to God the words of this song after God saved him from all his enemies and from Saul. 2-3 God is bedrock under my feet, the castle in which I live, my rescuing knight. My God—the high crag where I run for dear life, hiding behind the boulders, safe in the granite hideout; My mountaintop refuge, he saves me from ruthless men. 4 I sing to God the Praise-Lofty, and find myself safe and saved. 5-6 The waves of death crashed over me, devil waters rushed over me. Hell’s ropes cinched me tight; death traps barred every exit. 7 A hostile world! I called to God, to my God I cried out. From his palace he heard me call; my cry brought me right into his presence— a private audience! 8-16 Earth wobbled and lurched; the very heavens shook like leaves, Quaked like aspen leaves because of his rage. His nostrils flared, billowing smoke; his mouth spit fire. Tongues of fire darted in and out; he lowered the sky. He stepped down; under his feet an abyss opened up. He rode a winged creature, swift on wind-wings. He wrapped himself in a trenchcoat of black rain-cloud darkness. But his cloud-brightness burst through, a grand comet of fireworks. Then God thundered out of heaven; the High God gave a great shout. God shot his arrows—pandemonium! He hurled his lightnings—a rout! The secret sources of ocean were exposed, the hidden depths of earth lay uncovered The moment God roared in protest, let loose his hurricane anger. 17-20 But me he caught—reached all the way from sky to sea; he pulled me out Of that ocean of hate, that enemy chaos, the void in which I was drowning. They hit me when I was down, but God stuck by me. He stood me up on a wide-open field; I stood there saved—surprised to be loved! 21-25 God made my life complete when I placed all the pieces before him. When I cleaned up my act, he gave me a fresh start. Indeed, I’ve kept alert to God’s ways; I haven’t taken God for granted. Every day I review the ways he works, I try not to miss a trick. I feel put back together, and I’m watching my step. God rewrote the text of my life when I opened the book of my heart to his eyes. 26-28 You stick by people who stick with you, you’re straight with people who’re straight with you, You’re good to good people, you shrewdly work around the bad ones. You take the side of the down-and-out, but the stuck-up you take down a peg. 29-31 Suddenly, God, your light floods my path, God drives out the darkness. I smash the bands of marauders, I vault the high fences. What a God! His road stretches straight and smooth. Every God-direction is road-tested. Everyone who runs toward him Makes it. .... 50 Therefore I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the Gentiles, And sing praises to Your name. 51 “He is the tower of salvation to His king, And shows mercy to His anointed, To David and his descendants forevermore.”

Quran Talk - God Alone, Quran Alone, Submission = True Islam

Programmed Cell Death / Apoptosis is a process where the cell self-destructs  Between 50 and 70 billion cells die each day due to apoptosis in the average human adult. For an average child between the ages of 8 and 14, approximately 20 to 30 billion cells die a day. Fingers and toes self-destruction to eliminate the webbing Metamorphosis – only the very basic tissues are spared some of the respiratory system, heart, brain tissue, but aside from that just about the entire caterpillar is dissolved into a liquid that is reassembled into a butterfly Growth requires change Change requires something to die (to give up one thing for another) “The idea that cells take an active part in their own death comes from an observation that in certain cases a cell has to make new molecules in order to die. If you prevent this, the cell can’t die. The cell is participating in its own death because it has to participate to make something in order to die.”  Kill Your Ego [2:54] Recall that Moses said to his people, "O my people, you have wronged your souls by worshiping the calf. You must repent to your Creator. You shall kill your egos. This is better for you in the sight of your Creator." He did redeem you. He is the Redeemer, Most Merciful. If you want something you have to sacrifice something else to get it Can’t have your cake and eat it too  Has to make the conscious decision to want to change -  [13:11] Shifts (of angels) take turns, staying with each one of you—they are in front of you and behind you. They stay with you, and guard you in accordance with GOD's commands. Thus, GOD does not change the condition of any people unless they themselves make the decision to change. If GOD wills any hardship for any people, no force can stop it. For they have none beside Him as Lord and Master. [38:30] To David we granted Solomon; a good and obedient servant. [38:31] One day he became preoccupied with beautiful horses, until the night fell. [38:32] He then said, "I enjoyed the material things more than I enjoyed worshiping my Lord, until the sun was gone.* [38:33] "Bring them back." (To bid farewell,) he rubbed their legs and necks. [38:34] We thus put Solomon to the test; we blessed him with vast material wealth, but he steadfastly submitted.*  Sometimes to change you need a catalyst a change agent something to speed up the process   Change direction of the Qibla [2:142] The fools among the people would say, "Why did they change the direction of their Qiblah?" Say, "To GOD belongs the east and the west; He guides whoever wills in a straight path." [2:143] We thus made you an impartial community, that you may serve as witnesses among the people, and the messenger serves as a witness among you. We changed the direction of your original Qiblah only to distinguish those among you who readily follow the messenger from those who would turn back on their heels. It was a difficult test, but not for those who are guided by GOD. GOD never puts your worship to waste. GOD is Compassionate towards the people, Most Merciful.  Isolation – the difference between being buried and planted Joseph well Brother’s turned against him and through him into the well and left him for dead Joseph prison The governor’s wife schemed against Joseph [12:33] He said, "My Lord, the prison is better than giving in to them. Unless You divert their scheming from me, I may desire them and behave like the ignorant ones." [12:34] His Lord answered his prayer and diverted their scheming from him. He is the Hearer, the Omniscient. [12:35] Later, they saw to it, despite the clear proofs, that they should imprison him for awhile. Muhammad Cave   [9:40] If you fail to support him (the messenger), GOD has already supported him. Thus, when the disbelievers chased him, and he was one of two in the cave, he said to his friend, "Do not worry; GOD is with us." GOD then sent down contentment and security upon him, and supported him with invisible soldiers. He made the word of the disbelievers lowly. GOD's word reigns supreme. GOD is Almighty, Most Wise. People of the Cave [18:13] We narrate to you their history, truthfully. They were youths who believed in their Lord, and we increased their guidance. [18:14] We strengthened their hearts when they stood up and proclaimed: "Our only Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. We will never worship any other god beside Him. Otherwise, we would be far astray. [18:15] "Here are our people setting up gods beside Him. If only they could provide any proof to support their stand! Who is more evil than the one who fabricates lies and attributes them to GOD? [18:16] "Since you wish to avoid them, and their worshiping of other than GOD,* let us take refuge in the cave. May your Lord shower you with His mercy and direct you to the right decision." [18:20] "If they discover you, they will stone you, or force you to revert to their religion, then you can never succeed."  Mary   The Birth of Jesus [19:22] When she bore him, she isolated herself to a faraway place. [19:23] The birth process came to her by the trunk of a palm tree. She said, "(I am so ashamed;) I wish I were dead before this happened, and completely forgotten." [19:24] (The infant) called her from beneath her, saying, "Do not grieve. Your Lord has provided you with a stream. [19:25] "If you shake the trunk of this palm tree, it will drop ripe dates for you.* Footnote [19:26] "Eat and drink, and be happy. When you see anyone, say, 'I have made a vow of silence; I am not talking today to anyone.'" [19:27] She came to her family, carrying him. They said, "O Mary, you have committed something that is totally unexpected. [19:28] "O descendant of Aaron, your father was not a bad man, nor was your mother unchaste."  The Infant Makes a Statement [19:29] She pointed to him. They said, "How can we talk with an infant in the crib?" [19:30] (The infant spoke and) said, "I am a servant of GOD. He has given me the scripture, and has appointed me a prophet. [19:31] "He made me blessed wherever I go, and enjoined me to observe the Contact Prayers (Salat) and the obligatory charity (Zakat) for as long as I live. [19:32] "I am to honor my mother; He did not make me a disobedient rebel. [19:33] "And peace be upon me the day I was born, the day I die, and the day I get resurrected."  Moses Left Egypt where he met Shuaib and talked with God Growth comes with trust in God [22:15] If anyone thinks that GOD cannot support him in this life and in the Hereafter, let him turn completely to (his Creator in) heaven, and sever (his dependence on anyone else). He will then see that this plan eliminates anything that bothers him. Ostrich Effect – Avoiding Responsibility Not to be mistaken by hermitism - these are people who were isolated not necessarily by choice, but by circumstances.  [57:27] Subsequent to them, we sent our messengers. We sent Jesus the son of Mary, and we gave him the Injeel (Gospel), and we placed in the hearts of his followers kindness and mercy. But they invented hermitism which we never decreed for them. All we asked them to do was to uphold the commandments approved by GOD. But they did not uphold the message as they should have. Consequently, we gave those who believed among them their recompense, while many of them were wicked. Jonah [21:87] And Zan-Noon (Jonah, "the one with an 'N' in his name"), abandoned his mission in protest, thinking that we could not control him. He ended up imploring from the darkness (of the big fish's belly): "There is no god other than You. Be You glorified. I have committed a gross sin."  [68:48] You shall steadfastly persevere in carrying out the commands of your Lord. Do not be like (Jonah) who called from inside the fish. [11:42] As it sailed with them in waves like hills, Noah called his son, who was isolated: "O my son, come ride with us; do not be with the disbelievers."  Psychological research reveals more about this unhealthy appetite for ignorance. In one study, students watched a bogus educational film about a serious disease called “TAA Deficiency”. In fact, TAA Deficiency is completely fictional, but the students were not told this information; instead, they were asked whether they wished to provide a cheek swab for assessing their risk of developing the disease. Half of the students were told that if they ever developed TAA Deficiency, then the treatment would involve them taking a two-week course of pills. Of this group, 52% agreed to provide the diagnostic cheek swab. The other half of students learned the treatment would involve taking the pills for the rest of their lives. Of this group, only 21% agreed to the swab. These findings demonstrate a common pattern seen in other studies within and beyond the context of healthcare. That is, people are especially resistant to hearing feedback when they believe it could oblige them to do something difficult or unpleasant.  The Hypocrites [9:64] The hypocrites worry that a sura may be revealed exposing what is inside their hearts. Say, "Go ahead and mock. GOD will expose exactly what you are afraid of." [9:65] If you ask them, they would say, "We were only mocking and kidding." Say, "Do you realize that you are mocking GOD, and His revelations, and His messenger?" [9:66] Do not apologize. You have disbelieved after having believed. If we pardon some of you, we will punish others among you, as a consequence of their wickedness. Exposing the Hypocrites [47:20] Those who believed said: "When will a new sura be revealed?" But when a straightforward sura was revealed, wherein fighting was mentioned, you would see those who harbored doubts in their hearts looking at you, as if death had already come to them. They were thus exposed. Proof of Faith During Muhammad's Era [47:21] Obedience and righteous utterances are expected of them. If only they showed confidence in GOD, when mobilization was called for, it would have been better for them. This is our final chance  [7:53] Are they waiting until all (prophecies) are fulfilled? The day such fulfillment comes to pass, those who disregarded it in the past will say, "The messengers of our Lord have brought the truth. Are there any intercessors to intercede on our behalf? Would you send us back, so that we change our behavior, and do better works than what we did?" They have lost their souls, and their own innovations have caused their doom. [23:99] When death comes to one of them, he says, "My Lord, send me back. [23:100] "I will then work righteousness in everything I left." Not true. This is a false claim that he makes. A barrier will separate his soul from this world until resurrection. [6:27] If only you could see them when they face the hellfire! They would say then, "Woe to us. Oh, we wish if we could go back, and never reject our Lord's revelations, and join the believers." [6:28] As a matter of fact, (they only say this because) their secrets have been exposed. If they go back, they will commit exactly the same crimes. They are liars.  [35:37] They will scream therein, "Our Lord, if you get us out of here, we will work righteousness, instead of the works we used to do." Did we not give you a life-long chance, with continuous reminders for those who would take heed? Did you not receive the warner? Therefore, taste (the consequences). The transgressors will have no one to help them.  Like Locusts – Cannibalizing and Fleeing From One Another [54:6] Ignore them; the day will come when the caller will announce a terrible disaster. [54:7] With their eyes humiliated, they come out of the graves like scattered locusts. Mutual Blaming  On the Day of Resurrection [34:32] The leaders will say to those who followed them, "Are we the ones who diverted you from the guidance after it came to you? No; it is you who were wicked." [34:33] The followers will say to their leaders, "It was you who schemed night and day, then commanded us to be unappreciative of GOD, and to set up idols to rank with Him." They will be ridden with remorse, when they see the retribution, for we will place shackles around the necks of those who disbelieved. Are they not justly requited for what they did?  [40:47] As they argue in Hell, the followers will say to their leaders, "We used to be your followers, can you spare us any part of this Hell?" [40:48] The leaders will say, "We are all in this together. GOD has judged among the people."  Believers are like butterflies [101:4] That is the day when the people come out like swarms of butterflies.  Believers like a cocoon come out of the graves like butterflies Believer’s who grow their soul [79:1] The (angels who) snatch (the souls of the disbelievers) forcibly. [79:2] And those who gently take (the souls of the believers) joyfully. [91:7] The soul and Him who created it. [91:8] Then showed it what is evil and what is good. [91:9] Successful is one who redeems it. [91:10] Failing is one who neglects it.

Joel is a survivor of the Cordyceps Brain Infection outbreak, taking residence in the Boston Quarantine Zone. Embittered and hardened by the death of his young daughter Sarah, Joel operates as a black market smuggler, dealing in contraband, taking numerous de-humanizing jobs over the years to survive in this new post-pandemic world. He has only few moral boundaries left to cross. Unfortunately for him, he is thrust into the middle of the nightmare that the world has become, when he is asked by the leader of the Fireflies, Marlene, to look after Ellie. Throughout the game, Joel slowly develops an unbreakable bond with Ellie and a desire to once again open up his emotions that he had suppressed for so many years. Ellie (Ashley Johnson) - The deuteragonist of the game. Ellie is a brave 14-year-old girl that has grown up in this harsh world and it is all she has ever known. Ellie is immune to the Cordyceps strain and because of this, the Fireflies, an anti-government organization, seek to reverse engineer a vaccine through her. She and Joel travel across the post-pandemic United States to reach the Fireflies. She helps the player through the game in many ways, lending a hand in combat and assisting through areas of the game that would otherwise be inaccessible. She frequently expresses curiosity about the remnants of a world that no longer exists. Tess (Annie Wersching) - Tess is Joel's 'partner-in-crime'. They operate in the black market of a city under martial law and have earned a reputation for their ruthless behavior. She and Joel have a trust that runs deeply between them. Tess goes with Joel to drop off Ellie to the Fireflies at the Capitol building in Boston, in exchange for getting back the guns that were stolen from them. Against all odds, the trio make it to the Capitol Building only to find that the Fireflies are dead, and Tess reveals that she was bitten by a Runner an hour before. She holds off some soldiers after she makes Joel promise to bring Ellie to Tommy, Joel's little brother. Bill (W. Earl Brown) - Bill is a paranoid survivor who appears early in the game and helps Joel and Ellie. Bill takes refuge in a town that he has completely booby trapped. He seems to be a bit eccentric, perhaps deranged, but offers to aid Joel and Ellie in finding a car. He is excessively bitter towards Ellie due to the fact that she was hostile towards him from the start. Bill possesses gay pornography, and showed heavy emotion for his friend Frank's death, implying that he was romantically involved with Frank. Marlene (Merle Dandridge) - The leader of the Fireflies and Ellie's surrogate parent. In exchange for their guns back, Marlene tells Tess and Joel to take Ellie to the Fireflies at the Capitol building in Boston. To Marlene, every unethical action she takes can be justified because of her pursuit to save humanity from the infection. She is absent for most of the game and only appears at the end, where she becomes the final antagonist. Tommy (Jeffrey Pierce) - Joel's brother and a former Firefly. The game starts with Tommy helping Joel and Sarah maneuver through the chaotic crowds of both civilians and infected during the initial outbreak. Tommy and Joel reunite later within the game and he reluctantly agrees to help his brother, establishing one of Joel and Ellie's reasons for coming to the University of Eastern Colorado. He is married to Maria. David (Nolan North) - A middle-age survivor and leader of a Cannibals group who appears later in the game and asks for help from Ellie. David is a very manipulative person, seeking to win people over with his superficial mild-mannered appearance, and attempts to convince Ellie to join him. Ellie doesn't buy his attitude and eventually breaks his finger. He finally reveals his true nature to Ellie and even attempts to kill her outright, sending a group of his men to capture her several times throughout the winter section of the game. To David, everything that has happened was for a reason; he believes faith brought him and Ellie to together, and that their encounter was meant to be. He has a very profound effect on Ellie throughout the rest of the game. Henry (Brandon Scott) - An adept survivor, who, with his brother Sam, helps Joel and Ellie in Pittsburgh. He and Joel are initially hostile towards each other, but in the end begin to warm up to each other. However, he commits suicide after having to kill his infected brother. Sam (Nadji Jeter) - Henry's younger brother. Upon meeting, he and Ellie get along almost instantly and continue their easy going relationship throughout the chapter. After he is bitten by an Infected, Ellie is the last person Sam talks to before he turns. He is killed by Henry, who immediately commits suicide out of grief. Sarah (Hana Hayes) - Joel's daughter. She is killed in the prologue when a soldier was instructed to open fire on both her and Joel. Her death causes Joel to become cold, cynical, and brutal over the years.   Discuss gameplay mechanics: Combat (look at all these shoulder height walls) Stealth (but not really it’s just quiet combat) Crafting (favourite items and least favourite) AI (Where did all the promises from E3 2013 go?)   Discuss sound: BGM - thematic and atmospheric or forgettable? My guest today is David Roher. We’re talking about doing things that people may think you’re crazy for doing. We recently completed an Iron Man Triathlon. It was the hardest endurance activity I could have ever done.   [03:36] How David Knew He Wanted to do a Triathlon   David and his wife live an average life. When David was 38 his father had a heart attack. To help with his therapy he made his dad exercise. He started hearing about triathlon’s and it was something that interested him. He got into it and immediately began to love it. He determined that he was finally good at something outside of his work.   He went to North Carolina for a seminar on coaching. He then became a certified coach and began realizing what he liked about himself. He wanted to impart this feeling to other people. Most people when they complete a triathlon stop there. It’s more of a bucket list item for them. To David, it became more of a lifestyle. It transformed his outlook and approach to life.   Completing the iron man triathlon gave him empowerment. He dedicated a year of his life to achieve this goal. It was a very difficult task to the point where David felt like he was going to die. The end goal of reaching the finish line was his motivation to continue through. He set a goal that is beyond most people’s capacity and provide you can do almost anything you put your mind to.     [16:23] Prepare Yourself for a Triathlon. Same as you Would in Business.   It’s important to properly prepare when attempting a triathlon. It’s difficult to understand what is expected before going into it. Being prepared for what you can expect will bring you success. The same translates to business. When you’re more prepared in a situation the easier it is to execute.   You can feel defeated when you’re not properly prepared. Going into a situation where you’re not prepared can lead you to not wanting to do so again. This can be a barrier when faced with new opportunities. David set goals and prepared himself for the triathlon’s he’s completed. Remember, you can’t prepare for everything.   When training for a triathlon David was in an accident with a vehicle while on his bike. When he got home he realized there was an issue with his arm. After visiting the hospital, he found out he had broken his arm. Despite this David was still committed to doing the triathlon. He continued to work hard and train to complete the triathlon. He soon realized that his injury was causing him to take longer to complete activities.   He could have gone home and said at least he tried. Instead he continued and worked hard to reach his goal. The amount of training required is daunting. He was able to use his training tactics towards improving his life.   [25:48] Take Time to Train   An average training week for David isn’t a normal training week for other people. He doesn’t have a normal schedule as he teaches and tutors. Having a coach when training is important. Coaches will train you based on their experience and not yours. This is a good thing when you have limited experience.   A normal training time for people would be 5 out of 7 days. Each day would be set with different exercises to train on. You should have two long exercises, two medium exercises, then one small exercise. David’s training schedule is a bit more intense than that. He pushes himself beyond the frustration of discomfort.   [31:10] Celebrate the Small Accomplishments   It was terrifying to David to become an entrepreneur. The reason he went with teaching is because it was a safe bet. While it has its unique challenges it’s nothing like running a business. He started becoming an entrepreneur when he became a coach. He began to realize he liked working with people in a more freedom oriented environment. He wanted to encourage others to achieve their goals.   Mindset is huge. Your body can tolerate a lot of stress and frustration. Many entrepreneurs get stuck. They have mind barriers put up that prevent them from getting to their goal. We need to celebrate the moments where we feel we’re going to fail. Otherwise we end up sabotaging ourselves. Put benchmarks in place on your journey and keep yourself accountable to your goals.   [40:54] Bounce Your Ideas off Someone   Don’t get caught up on the narrative in your head. You could have the best product and put all you have into it. Yet, your strategy could be off. You might not be aware of the opportunities available to bring it to market. Have a sounding board where you can bounce off ideas. If you stay living in your head, you could miss many opportunities.   [42:20] Contact David   If you want to reach out to David you can e-mail him at davidroher@aol.com.     Episode Outline   Introduction: Being an Entrepreneur is Like Doing a Triathlon   [03:36] How David Knew He Wanted to do a Triathlon [16:23] Be Prepared for a Triathlon. Emmanuel – Faithful Through the Ages I. Jesus is the Son of Abraham (1, 2) a. Jesus is the One in whom God's ancient promises to Abraham find their fulfillment. b. Genesis 12:3 “I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed." c. God is faithful. He kept his promise. The seed of Abraham is born. Application: All the nations are blessed by this child who was born. By his life and death and resurrection, anyone can receive the grace of God. Oh, that the world might know what you know, your lost family members, class mates, coworkers. What an opportunity at Christmas to share your faith. What a privilege we have to go or to give to those who would go to Asia, Africa, to cities where people do not know the grace that is found in Jesus Christ. II. Jesus is the Son of David (1, 6) a. “Christ” Greek equivalent of the Hebrew “Messiah”, “anointed one” b. Jesus, anointed son of David. He is the heir to the throne of David c. 2 Samuel 7:16 “And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.” d. God kept his promise. Jesus is the descendent of David who will rule on David’s throne forever. I. Christ's birth demonstrates God's power, grace, and faithfulness (1:1-17) A. God's power 1. God preserved his people through the Exile (1:11,12) 2. He caused Jesus to be born by a virgin (1:16) B. God's grace (1:3,5-7,11,16) all of these people experienced the grace of God and even more so are included in the lineage of Jesus by God’s grace. 1. To women - Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba (3 or 4 known for sexual immorality) (Not the more dignified: Sarah, Rebecca or Rachel) 2. To sinners - David, Bathsheba (adultery and murder) Solomon (pursued multiple women and their false gods) Jeconiah 3. To Gentiles – Rahab (Canaanite), Ruth (Moabite), Bathsheba (possibly a Hittite)? C. God's covenant faithfulness (1:1-17) 1. To Abraham, To David, To his people Application: Sin will not be the end of man.The fall will not be the last word over mankind. This is “Grace that is greater than all our sin.” III. Jesus’ birth is the greatest testament to God’s faithfulness. IV. Through millennia, through generations, through rising and falling of kings and kingdoms, through wars and exile, God kept His covenant promises to His people in the birth of Jesus Christ. Application: 1. Jesus has come. He is coming again. Generations of his people waited, in expectation of his coming. They wondered, “When will the blessing of Abraham come?” “When will the Son of David would take his throne?” Peace, stability, prosperity. We wait in expectation – the struggles we have will be no more, pain and death will be a memory. 2. He could return today, or tomorrow. The Bible tells us, don’t be unprepared. He will come when we do not expect it. What would you have him find you doing?

Quran Talk - God Alone, Quran Alone, Submission = True Islam

Two economist are walking past a car dealership and see a fully restored 1967 Chevy Camaro for sale and one of the economist says wow – I really want that car. And the other economist laughs and says no you don’t.  The last thing you want to do is explain a joke, but since that joke isn’t inherently funny we will make this exception. If the economist really wanted the car he would be willing to part way with his money for that car. Or if he didn’t have the money he would get an extra job earn extra money to obtain that car. Since he wasn’t willing to make the tradeoff then he didn’t “really want to get that car” Common shortcoming for all of us A lot of things in life we want to have but we are not willing to do the work to do what it takes to obtain it Adam and Eve is an example of people wanting what they have not earned [7:20] The devil whispered to them, in order to reveal their bodies, which were invisible to them. He said, "Your Lord did not forbid you from this tree, except to prevent you from becoming angels, and from attaining eternal existence." [20:120] But the devil whispered to him, saying, "O Adam, let me show you the tree of eternity and unending kingship." NO FRUIT JUICE  Guy sneaks into Floyd Mayweather vs. Connor McGregor fight   The Sedentary [9:42] If there were a quick material gain, and a short journey, they would have followed you. But the striving is just too much for them. They will swear by GOD: "If we could, we would have mobilized with you." They thus hurt themselves, and GOD knows that they are liars. [17:11] The human being often prays for something that may hurt him, thinking that he is praying for something good. The human being is impatient.  [21:37] The human being is impatient by nature. I will inevitably show you My signs; do not be in such a hurry. The Secret – The law of attraction – whatever you think about you will attract  People think about wanting money and all they get is more wanting of money God knows exactly how much we can handle and if He was to give us one penny more than we can handle we would transgress. Materials of This World: All That The Disbelievers Get [43:33] If it were not that all the people might become one (disbelieving) congregation, we would have granted everyone who disbelieves in the Most Gracious mansions with silver roofs, and stairs upon which they could climb. [43:34] Their mansions would have impressive gates, and luxurious furnishings. [43:35] Also many ornaments. All these are the temporary materials of this lowly life. The Hereafter—at your Lord—is far better for the righteous. Growth only occurs in states of discomfort Moses with his teacher – how can you stand that which you do not understand  Karate Kid – wax on wax off So instead of asking for more provisions think about asking God for the ability to handle more provisions Solomon's Exemplary Devotion [38:30] To David we granted Solomon; a good and obedient servant. [38:31] One day he became preoccupied with beautiful horses, until the night fell. [38:32] He then said, "I enjoyed the material things more than I enjoyed worshiping my Lord, until the sun was gone. [38:33] "Bring them back." (To bid farewell,) he rubbed their legs and necks. [38:34] We thus put Solomon to the test; we blessed him with vast material wealth, but he steadfastly submitted.* [38:35] He said, "My Lord, forgive me, and grant me a kingship never attained by anyone else. You are the Grantor." [38:36] We (answered his prayer and) committed the wind at his disposal, pouring rain wherever he wanted. [38:37] And the devils, building and diving. [38:38] Others were placed at his disposal. [38:39] "This is our provision to you; you may give generously, or withhold, without limits." [38:40] He has deserved an honorable position with us, and a wonderful abode. *38:32 Solomon missed his afternoon prayer because of his horses. To nullify Satan's possible claim that Solomon loved his horses more than loving God, he got rid of his horses. “History is filled with the sound of silken slippers going downstairs and wooden shoes coming up.” ―Voltaire Societies are founded by stoics and fall by epicureans             Doing the hardwork vs. pleasure seeking             Instant gratification Persevere past failure Cyrus the Great - Pasargadae remained the capital of the Achaemenid empire until Cambyses II moved it to Susa; later, Darius founded another in Persepolis. Easy choice, hard life hard choice easy life             Steadfastly persevere [47:31] We will certainly put you to the test, in order to distinguish those among you who strive, and steadfastly persevere. We must expose your true qualities. [90:10] Did we not show him the two paths? [90:11] He should choose the difficult path. [90:12] Which one is the difficult path? [90:13] The freeing of slaves. [90:14] Feeding, during the time of hardship. [90:15] Orphans who are related. [90:16] Or the poor who is in need. [90:17] And being one of those who believe, and exhorting one another to be steadfast, and exhorting one another to be kind. [90:18] These have deserved happiness. when you haven’t earned something you give it up easily Now that we know this - what is it that we really want?  [53:24] What is it that the human being desires? [53:25] To GOD belongs both the Hereafter, and this world. [7:26] O children of Adam, we have provided you with garments to cover your bodies, as well as for luxury. But the best garment is the garment of righteousness. These are some of GOD's signs, that they may take heed. [7:27] O children of Adam, do not let the devil dupe you as he did when he caused the eviction of your parents from Paradise, and the removal of their garments to expose their bodies. He and his tribe see you, while you do not see them. We appoint the devils as companions of those who do not believe. Choose Your Priorities Carefully This Life [17:18] Anyone who chooses this fleeting life as his priority, we will rush to him what we decide to give him, then we commit him to Gehenna, where he suffers forever, despised and defeated. The Hereafter [17:19] As for those who choose the Hereafter as their priority, and work righteousness, while believing, their efforts will be appreciated. [17:20] For each one of them we provide; we provide those and these from your Lord's bounties. Your Lord's bounties are inexhaustible. [17:21] Note how we preferred some people above others (in this life). The differences in the Hereafter are far greater and far more significant. [42:20] Whoever seeks the rewards of the Hereafter, we multiply the rewards for him. And whoever seeks the materials of this world, we give him therefrom, then he receives no share in the Hereafter. [4:134] Anyone who seeks the materials of this world should know that GOD possesses both the materials of this world and the Hereafter. GOD is Hearer, Seer.

For extended show notes and bonuses visit: www.UnderTheCrossbones.com/013 Today's episode seems to be a sort of remix theme.  My interview guest is Andrea Jones, author of the Hook and Jill Saga.  The first two books, "Hook and Jill" and "Other Oceans" are out now.  The third book, "Other Islands" will be out in 2016. "Hook and Jill" is a retelling of the Peter Pan story told from Wendy's point of view.  And since Wendy is the most mature of the Neverland lot (being Mother and all), the story is told from a much more adult point of view. Besides her take on writing the story we talk a lot about J.M. Barrie and how he handled the story as well as the various versions of Peter Pan over the years.  We also get into the newly restored version of Barrie's original book that Andrea has been working on. Like the show?  Leave a review on iTunes!  It's a giant help in bringing more listeners to the show.  Here's how to leave a review. Want to win an autographed copy of "Hook and Jill"? Here's the scoop.  Before the interview I bought a copy of "Hook and Jill" to read.  And I happened to find one that was signed by Andrea Jones.  And now I'd like to pass it on to you. The book is signed "To David and Margaret". If those happen to be your name, even better.  But if not, it's still a great autographed hardcover version of the book. Click here to enter the contest. And that's not all!... Also today on the show, comedy from Daymon Ferguson talking about books and being a literate bully. Following the remix theme of this episode, you'll also hear brand new music from Uberband.  The singer and mastermind behind Uberband is my brother Ryan Johnson and the song "Layabout" is absolutely nutty.  Nobody jams a ton of styles into one song like these guys. For this episode of The Skate To Create Podcast, we had the chance to speak with David “Phat Kid” Ricci. Experimental musician and freelance artist, David is going to school for a fine arts studio degree with further study in music theory & composition and computer science. Originally from Alabama, David Ricci had his life begin to take shape at the age of 10 when he moved to Albuquerque, NM. Although he found a melting pot of culture and people in the Land of Enchantment, he had a really rough childhood and shares his history of complex PTSD. Growing up, David was extremely shy to the point where it paralyzed him. He found one outlet in the form of drawing and would give away his drawings of popular characters like the Ninja Turtles and Beetlejuice to the other kids. Art was his way of expressing himself when he was unable to talk. Skateboarding is an extension of that. It has enabled him to overcome his introversion by the fact that he uses public transportation and that forces him to talk to strangers. “After a day of skating, I just feel so good. The things that would normally bother me become less significant. If I'm upset in any way, all I need to do is skate and usually I will feel better, even if its just around the block. It's like taking a walk to get your head straight, only better because I'm on a skateboard.” At 15 years old the video game Descent and the Descent 2 soundtrack inspired him to start creating music with things around the house. Experimentation with a karaoke machine, dual tape deck, and computer programs have helped him to develop his own electronic music style. To David, skateboarding is an artform, a personal creative outlet. “I'm always trying to start from a place where I don't know what I'm doing. I love mistakes, because there's always something unpredictable that I can use, like I'm collaborating with the randomness of the universe. Skating is like that, too.” David believes knowing how to fall is a vital key when learning to skate. Being into martial arts as a kid he was able to apply some of those principles to falling properly. Then you just have to hang on, keep riding and go with the flow. Along the way he has realized that sometimes you have to stop focusing on the hard trick and find one that comes more naturally. He finds beauty in that. David states that you have to learn perseverance, and that’s what makes you a skateboarder. He believes, “Skating is all about taking yourself to the edge, knowing your limits, but pushing the edge a little bit further each time.” After the Episode, Visit his website and social media links below!
