Pierre Baston: Well, I have to tell you, I used to drink coffee and tea just like many people do as an occasional thing, almost like a habit without thinking too much about it. But I love to travel. And I went to Argentina many times in order to study tango, in order to study the Argentine culture. And when I was in Argentina, I was struck by one of the most prominent cultural features of the country, and that is their love for a drink called mate. Mate is this hot herbal infusion that was first invented by the Guaraní Indians of Argentina over 500 years ago. And Argentines today love mate. Over 90% of Argentines drink this every single day. And what's very interest thing to me, and what struck me, is that they insist on doing this in the traditional way of the Guaraní Indians 500 years ago. Today is going to be a super special episode because we are talking with the one and only Mr. Josh Smith co-founder of End2end Development, and someone who has just launched or worked with their 26th Kickstarter campaign, that's right, 26th. Josh has been an OG of the Kickstarter community. He's been a creator since 2015. He's amassed tens of thousands of backers, helping raise over two and a half million for all of his projects that he's worked on. Some of those things you've definitely seen before from his first one with The Titanium Hex-Bit Driving Ring, to Fidget Spinner Wallet to EDC tools and backpacks, coffee products to camera equipment. And now he's back with the 26th campaign ALVA, which already has hundreds of backers midway through the campaign. So Josh, I am super excited to have you on the show today. Josh Smith: No, thank you very much for having me. Roy Morejon: So let's talk background what's you to first off becoming an entrepreneur? Josh Smith: Sure. That's a great question, my dad, essentially. Growing up, my dad ran a company in the offshore oil industry. He'd worked for several companies over the years and identified areas that they weren't fulfilling. And they'd go out on job in foreign countries and there'd be requirements and things that were missing and all these little ideas formed. So he set up his own company, fulfilling those needs, designing bits and pieces to service those areas. And for me growing up, he'd fly off for two weeks to some far flung country that nobody that I knew would would go to, especially not a holiday.

We've, we've actually developed this with next generation lasers, which are, are, and without going too far into the, the nerdy weeds on this are vertical cavity surface mission lasers. And it's a, it's a new type of technology. They're, they're a little bit different from some of the lasers that have been used in the past, but because of that, we can, we can use them in ways that are more effective for penetrating joint and muscle tissue for treating inflammation and pain. And something like this, I think really is going to be beneficial to the planet, which is why I'm really excited about it. As I mentioned before the show, I just got back from a entrepreneurship trip to Greenland. I was really devastated just seeing what's happening to our planet and the melting of all of those things. And I think the beauty of this product really is just something that's so simple that is easy to replace in our lives from the typical paper towel dispenser that we're going through a roll every other day or something like this.

So really excited to kind of dive in, you guys have an active Kickstarter campaign. Less than three weeks left on it. You've got over 500 backers, and over 45 grand raised on it. So congratulations on that, as well as getting fully funded on day one, which is always critical. But really want to dive in and talk about the product, as if our audience had never heard of it before. Ryan Wolfe: Yeah, man! This product is unique, and it solved a problem that we kind of faced every day. It's basically a vacuum sealed tumbler, with built-in stainless steel cutlery. So everywhere you go, you got a knife, fork, and spoon built right into your water bottle, everywhere you go. Roy Morejon: You know, I was amazed with some of the stats that you guys had in the video, and it's just compounding in terms of how much we humans waste. 40 billion single use plastic utensils are thrown out every year. And then add on to the fact that 22 billion plastic water bottles on top of that every year. So tens of millions of plastic pieces are just being tossed aside, and hopefully recycled at the end of the day, but it's still finding its way to landfills. So I definitely get the problem that you guys are trying to solve there, but how did you guys decide on tackling it in this part...

So, if you will give our audience a little bit of background about KingsCrowd. Chris Lustrino: Yeah, absolutely. So if you're into the rewards crowdfunding space, you already understand the idea of, hey, if we can engage potential customers and fans and ambassadors of our business early on, that can really be a catalyst to grow our business. Well, that concept, which is phenomenal, was taken back in 2012 by the government and they created something called the Jobs Act and they said, “Hey, let's not just allow for rewards. What if we could actually enable individuals to be able to own actual equity in these companies in the earliest, earliest days of the organizations?” And so now you have an opportunity as of 2016 to begin raising capital from the general public,

Michael Berard: Hey, thanks, Roy, appreciate you having me. Roy Morejon: So I'm really excited about this product, one, because I love the outdoors, two, I have a fire pit that I use as often as possible, and three, I think this product is absolutely amazing for lots of other things outside of fire pits. But first, before I dive in, let's talk to the audience about what your product is as if I'd never heard it before, what is RocketFire? Michael Berard: Sure, RocketFire is we're saying that the fastest way to start a fire, it's a fire starter that allows you to insert this particular starter into wood or charcoal and start it up in seconds. Roy Morejon: Amazing, so let's talk about your inspiration around RocketFire, where did this all start? Michael Berard: Yeah, so a good, good buddy of mine and I, this was five years ago, we're just sitting around, we were grilling. We were talking about the fact that it was difficult to start a charcoal grill, and he had burned up a couple of electric starters. We had used the chimney, we had used other blow torches. I was actually using a blow torch to start mine at that point. It was just, to us, it was crazy that there was nothing out there that was specifically designed and good at starting a fire. So that's where it started, I'm a son of an engineer and fortunately received some of those skills. So I went back and drew some things up, and took it to a design firm, and five years later we have the RocketFire. Roy Morejon: Yeah, so let's talk a little bit about your background, what led you down this path?

You've got an active Kickstarter campaign that's about to wrap up. You've got about $89,000 in funding with hundreds of backers that have come in. So if you would, Jim, give our audience a little bit of background about your product as if we've never heard it before. Jim Cooper: That's great. You got two hours? No, I'm just kidding. So the DorsiFLEX was invented by me for me because I was, like many people, suffering from plantar fasciitis, which is an inflammation of the arch of your foot where it inserts into your heel. Unlike most people, I had it bilaterally. So I had it in both feet at the same time, Jim Cooper: I was doing everything that the physical therapist and the doctor told me to do. Wear the orthotic, take the shot, take the anti-inflammatories, do all the stretching, sleep in the boot and nothing was working.

And then what kind of led to the cocktail shaker idea was that I designed a series of vacuum insulated water bottles for somebody, so it gave me exposure to the engineering behind that. My hallmate at the time, well I was living in Oakville, Ontario, and he mentioned he had a buddy from his hometown that reminded me or reminded him of me and ended up being Mitch himself. And this is definitely not our first business we've started. It's one of maybe five, the previous four have all failed, but we picked up our bumps and bruises together, starting different businesses and mainly in the door to door industry where we were knocking doors and selling smart home technology. And that's where we realized we were both very into sales, business development and owning the architecture of our own destiny and creating our future ourselves and one thing led to another and Mitch asked me if I wanted to jump into business and take anoth...

Today, I am talking with the CEO of Thomas and Darden, Nathan George, the creator of Kube4, a premium portable entertainment system. Nathan, thank you so much for joining us today on Art of the Kickstart. Nathan George: Sure, thanks for having me, Roy. Roy Morejon: Really excited about today’s conversation. I think it would be prudent for me to jump in and say let’s talk a little bit first about your background because you’ve seen and done a lot of things, and been very successful with many things. What’s led you to this point and what led you to start as an entrepreneur? Nathan George: I don’t know. I think it goes back to even early days where I was always trying to figure how to make money. I didn’t have a lot growing up, whether it was trying to sell Airheads and Blow Pops at the bus stop, to making a self-sustaining hamster and durable business. I was running ad pack routes at 10 years old to get my first job as soon as I created 14 or 15 running inventory and stock boy for Finish Line. I started early just looking for ways to make money so I can buy a bicycle or anything else like that to get around. Roy Morejon: Talk a little bit about your current businesses or adventures in the entrepreneurial world. Nathan George: I think that that mindset is kind of always been around for me. I thought I was always destined to be an academic and be a professor, so my background’s in math and physics. I worked at Los Alamos National Labs and NSA. When I was at Berkeley after my first year, I got an email for a summer job to work with a startup hedge fund. I came in and ended up being brought on to build out the whole research team. I was hiring graduated PhDs from I’ve League to come work for me and I was a first-year student.
