That threw me for a loop,” and then you kind of - either vocally OR subconsciously get to this, “God owes me,” sort of feeling. Embittered. “I guess I grew up. I thought He was with me. For me. Joe and Phyllis Britt are an old married couple in New York City who do not get along. Joe gets home from his job as a cab driver late one night, and Phyllis accuses him of seeing another woman. In the meantime, a television repairman is in the next room fixing their broken set. Irritated, Joe harasses the repairman about the inconvenience and cost. The repairman abruptly closes the open TV panel and announces the TV is fixed. After stating the job is free, he leaves, and the TV starts getting channel 10—a station showing the past, present, and future of Joe and Phyllis' lives. Joe refuses to let Phyllis watch the TV and faints when he sees himself and a mistress talking. When he tunes in again later, it shows him killing Phyllis in a fight. Joe breaks down at the sight and tells Phyllis what is happening. Phyllis seeks help from the family doctor, who gives Joe a sedative and says that seeing oneself on television is one of several common delusions manifested by the struggle to adjust to the new technology of television. Profoundly disturbed by the sight of Phyllis' death, Joe tries to heal their relationship, telling her that he accepts the blame for their feuding and has realized that his extramarital affairs were only an escape from the stress of his job, that Phyllis is still the one he really loves. Embittered by years of Joe's coldness and philandering, Phyllis scorns his attempt at reconciliation. When he begins reacting to another channel 10 vision – his trial for Phyllis's murder and execution via electric chair – even as Phyllis sees only static, Phyllis is convinced that Joe has lost his mind and taunts him. Joe, angered, attacks and kills her in the same manner as he had seen on the television screen. As Joe is arrested by the police, the TV repairman suddenly appears and mockingly asks, "Fix your set okay, Mister? You will recommend my service, won't you?" The repairman smirks as Joe is taken away.

Thank you for tuning in online this weekend to our first message in the series, "Love Handles". Genesis 3:1-13 The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the Lord God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?” “Of course we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,” the woman replied. “It's only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God said, ‘You must not eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die.'” “You won't die!” the serpent replied to the woman. “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.” The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too. At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves. When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard the Lord God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the Lord God among the trees. Then the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” He replied, “I heard you walking in the garden, so I hid. I was afraid because I was naked.” “Who told you that you were naked?” the Lord God asked. “Have you eaten from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat?” The man replied, “It was the woman you gave me who gave me the fruit, and I ate it.” Then the Lord God asked the woman, “What have you done?” “The serpent deceived me,” she replied. “That's why I ate it.” Genesis 3:16-17 Then he said to the woman, “I will sharpen the pain of your pregnancy, and in pain you will give birth. And you will desire to control your husband, but he will rule over you. And to the man he said, “Since you listened to your wife and ate from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat, the ground is cursed because of you. All your life you will struggle to scratch a living from it. When we blame others, we get EMBITTERED. When we accept responsibility, we get EMPOWERED. Accepting blame isn't about God FAULTING you, it's about Him FREEING you. 1. Own the FACT that you bring ISSUES into your relationships. Romans 3:23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God's glorious standard. Getting HONEST is always the first step in getting HEALTHY. 2. Stop trying to FIND the right one, and instead BECOME the right one. Genesis 2:18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” Being alone and being single are very DIFFERENT. Alone-ISOLATION Single-IDENTITY Genesis 2:18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helperwho is just right for him.” 3. Do your part to build relationships GOD'S WAY instead of CULTURE'S WAY. Proverbs 14:12 There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death. It it's to BE, it's up to ME. 2 Corinthians 12:9 Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. Down in the eighth of the evil pouches (the malebolge) that make up the giant circle of fraud in INFERNO, Guido da Montefeltro has told the (self-justifying) tale of his life. And now comes the struggle at his death, a fight between Saint Francis and a black Cherub from hell. Join me, Mark Scarbough, as we slow-walk through INFERNO, finishing up Guido's incredible monologue about his life and death. This passage has a few problems in it, not the least of which is the off-handed way Dante (or is it Guido?) mention the great Saint Francis. Here are the segments of this episode of WALKING WITH DANTE: [01:23] My English translation of INFERNO, Canto XXVII, lines 112 - 136. If you'd like to read along or drop a comment about this episode, please see the page on my website, walkingwithdante.com. [03:34] The quick shift from Guido's life to his death. [04:38] Two small problems at the front of this passage: a black Cherub and the name of the sin for this evil pouch. [06:19] What is fraudulent counsel? [08:03] The problem of the off-handed reference to Saint Francis. [11:28] Conversion demands a "before" and an "after"--that is, a linear story, which Guido's is not. [13:07] The demonic/Scholastic joke in the passage. [13:45] One last link between Dante the pilgrim and Guido da Montefeltro. [15:17] The journey to Minos (and maybe some meta-literary joking around, too). [16:55] Biting yourself in rage: repetition as one of Dante's key literary devices. [18:07] Guido's final words--and his humanity. [21:04] Guido's eternal mutterings. [22:37] A final textual difficulty to round out Inferno, Canto XXVII. [25:35] A final reading of Guido's entire monologue: Inferno, Canto XXVII, lines 58 - 136.

Until recently, to most Americans, the spectrum of legitimate political discourse revolved around two ideological poles: liberalism and conservatism. Indeed, over the course of the fifty-year counterrevolution that began with the destruction of the radicalism of 68, liberal emerged as a slur on the political right. Even the Democratic Party - the institutional manifestation of the left flank of capital – seemed to shy away from the term ‘liberal' as the notion that the United States was fundamentally a center right country came to be naturalized common sense amongst the beltway establishment. However, with the development of a vocal, albeit politically feeble, social democratic movement over the last five years, liberalism is facing challenges from the left. Indeed, today when someone utilizes the term “lib” in a derisive manner, it is very often from the perspective that liberalism represents a rightist ideology. At the same time, elements of the conservative movement - in particular those who advocate free market orthodoxy and bloviate endlessly about phantasmic threats to free speech - have sought to recast themselves as “classical liberals”. Yet, many Americans remain fundamentally ignorant of the complex historical relationship between liberalism and socialism. What is the relationship between these two ideological trends of the so-called left? How did these tendencies relate to one another historically? And are they mortal enemies or embittered kin?   About Matt McManus: Matthew McManus is Professor of Politics and International Relations at the University of Tec de Monterrey, Mexico, where he teaches political science and theory. Study Notes Ed Underwood Sermons By Ed: Malachi: The Only Hope for Your Hearts of Stone—The Lord You Are Seeking! “I am about to send my messenger, who will clear the way before me.” (Malachi 3:1) The seventeen Books of Prophecy record the messages of the writing prophets (those whose messages are preserved in writing) God raised up to speak for Him following the ministries of the prophets Elijah and Elisha. The failings of the Divided Kingdom Era prompted God to speak to Israel in the north and Judah in the south. They continued to speak to God’s people for over 400 years, including the exile to Babylonia and the return to the Promise Land. (1 Kings 12-Esther) The prophets spoke for God to His people concerning the enforcement of terms of their covenant relationship with God. Each spoke to a specific generation of Israel or Judah to enforce the conditional covenant (Mosaic) in the context of the unconditional covenants flowing from the Abrahamic Covenant. Their message can be summed up in these sentences: You are mine! (Unconditional covenants, Romans 11:29). Walk with me and I will bless you. Walk away from me and I will call you back to myself through loving discipline (Conditional covenant, Romans 9-11). Life in the Promise Land was hard, very hard. The Persians still ruled their homeland, crops were failing, and locust plagues ravaged the land (Malachi 3:11). 80 years ago, the prophets Haggai and Zechariah had promised blessing, but the prosperity never came. Even after Ezra’s profound reforms and Nehemiah’s amazing success, most of the people were discouraged and doubtful of God’s goodness and care. The priests were self-serving and led them in cold, ritualistic worship and demanded outward obedience to the Law. But their hearts weren’t in it. On the inside they remained as rebellious as any generation of Israelites. Foreign cultures had successfully invaded the consciousness and morality of God’s people. The Israelites divorced their wives to marry Gentiles, and greed and injustice was the order of the day. “... Malachi and his contemporaries were living in an uneventful waiting period, when God seemed to have forgotten His people enduring poverty and foreign domination in the little province of Judah. ... True the Temple had been completed, but nothing momentous had occurred to indicate that God’s presence had returned to fill it with glory, as Ezekiel had indicated would happen (Ezk. 43:4). ... Generations were dying without receiving the promises (cf. Heb 11:13) and many were losing their faith.” (Joyce G. Baldwin, “Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi: An Introduction and Commentary, p. 211) Using a confrontational style, Malachi encourages them to pursue holiness by exposing their sin. He is the only prophet who ends his book with judgment. His book is an appropriate conclusion to the Old Testament. It stresses the hopelessly sinful condition of the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob who had been called by God to be a blessing to all nations. His message ends in a curse, leaving the world in need of another plan that isn’t dependent upon the obedience of the nation Israel. That plan will be introduced by the next prophet to speak, John the Baptist, who will, in turn, announce the coming of the One who would be called the “Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29). His name is Jesus Christ: Malachi emphasizes Israel’s God as the sovereign over the whole world, who is extremely patient with His wayward people. The last prophet to speak to God’s people before 400 years of silence, 47 of Malachi’s 55 verses are spoken by God Himself – the highest portion of all the prophets. I. “I STILL LOVE YOU!” (1:1-5): Malachi’s generation has forgotten how much God loves them. Embittered by the problems of the present, they have forgotten God’s past works on their behalf. God reminds them of His special love by contrasting the fates of Esau (Edom) and Jacob (Israel). II. “YOUR PRIESTS DO NOT REPRESENT ME!” (1:6-2:9): Though the returning remnant had succeeded in rebuilding extraneous worship, the priests were taking the lead in hypocritical worship. They exhibited favoritism as they encouraged flawed sacrifices. Malachi: Doubting God’s love leads to inauthentic worship and calloused disobedience! III. “YOUR MEN DIVORCE THEIR WIVES AND MARRY GENTILES!” (2:10-16): A sure sign of an inner attitude of rebellion against the God of Israel is intermarriage with pagan peoples. Malachi’s generation ignored God’s teaching on the sanctity of marriage. IV. “YOU DOUBT MY JUSTICE?” (2:17-3:6): Malachi’s generation had become apathetic to the point of doubting if God would ever back up His teaching on the necessity of justice in relationships and society. V. “YOU’RE ROBBING GOD!” (3:7-12): Malachi’s generation failed to connect their withholding of tithes and offerings with God’s withholding of blessing. VI. “I WILL JUDGE THE ARROGANCE OF THE PEOPLE WHILE BLESSING THE REMNANT FOR THEIR HUMILITY” (3:13-4:3): Those who feared the Lord and esteemed His name would be spared in the day of judgment as His own special possession. VII. “I WILL SEND AN ENCOURAGER TO RIGHTEOUSNESS BEFORE I JUDGE THE EARTH” (4:4-6): Malachi ends on the bitter word “curse.” Although the people are finally cured of idolatry, there is little spiritual progress in Israel’s history. Sin abounds, and the need for the coming Messiah is greater than ever. MALACHI AND YOU: The Old Testament concludes with a curse. In spite of God’s unfailing love for His people, they are irreparably flawed by sin. The ever-loving, never-failing God pronounces judgment on His never-loving, ever-failing people. But all is not lost. A coming herald will make the way for the One who will encourage God’s people to return to Him. Two indicators a person has fallen out of love with God: 1. Inauthentic Worship. Like Malachi’s generation they simply go through the motions. Doubting God’s love, they concentrate on the externals of worship while avoiding deep heart-interaction with God. Doubting God’s justice toward them, they give themselves permission to rob God of His lordship of their time and resources. 2. Calloused Disobedience. Like Malachi’s generation their attitude overflows into sinful behaviors. Doubting God’s love, they arrogantly express their cynicism and rebellion. Doubting God’s justice toward them, they give themselves permission to treat others unjustly. Especially the families they abandon through divorce. Two meditations that will encourage a person to fall back in love with God: Messiah: The Book of Malachi precedes four hundred years of prophetic silence, broken finally by the words of the next prophet, John the Baptist: “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29) Malachi predicts the coming of the messenger who will clear the way before the Lord’s First Advent (3:1; cf. Isaiah 40:3). John the Baptist later fulfills this prophecy, but the next few verses (3:2-5) look to Christ’s Second Advent. “Elijah the prophet” will encourage repentance before the day of the Lord (4:5). John the Baptist was this Elijah (Matthew 3:3; 11:10-14; 17:9-13), but Elijah will also appear before the second coming of Christ (Revelation 11:6). First Advent of Christ To Rescue from Sin Suffering Servant Messenger to prepare the way (3:1a) (John the Baptist, Matt. 11:10; 17:11-12) Lord comes to the Temple (3:1a) (Triumphal Entry, Matt. 21:12-14) Cross of Christ Offers Love Second Advent of Christ To Rescue Creation Conquering King Messenger of the (new) Covenant (3:1b-4) (Jesus Christ, Matt. 26:28) Angel (messenger) of the Lord (3:1b-4) Elijah encourages repentance (4:4-6) Day of the Lord (4:4-6) Offers Hope.

In The Past Lane - The Podcast About History and Why It Matters

This week at In The Past Lane, the American History podcast, we take a look at a legendary labor uprising by a mysterious group known as the Molly Maguires. They were Irish and Irish American coal miners in Pennsylvania in the 1870s who used vigilante violence to fight back against the powerful and exploitative mine owners. But in the end, the mine owners used their dominance over the political and legal establishment to see to it that 20 men, most of whom were likely innocent, were executed by hanging.   Feature Story: The Molly Maguires Hanged  On Thursday June 21, 1877 – 143 years ago this week - ten men went to the gallows in Pennsylvania.  They were known as Molly Maguires – members of an ultra-secret society that used violence and intimidation in their bitter struggles with powerful mine owners. Arrested for their alleged role in several murders, they were convicted and sentenced to death on the basis of very thin evidence and questionable testimony.  “Black Thursday” would long be remembered by residents of the Pennsylvania coal fields as an extraordinary example of anti-labor and anti-Irish prejudice.  The story of the Molly Maguires was one very much rooted in two specific places: rural Ireland and the anthracite region of PA. The latter was the main supplier of the nation’s coal, making it a vital component in American’s unfolding industrial revolution. By the 1870s, more than 50,000 miners – more than half of them Irish or Irish American – toiled in the region’s mines. It was hard, brutal work. They worked long hours for low pay in extremely dangerous conditions. Every year cave-ins, floods, and poison gas claimed the lives of hundreds of miners.  In one fire alone in 1869, 110 miners were killed. It was in the struggle of these workers to improve their pay, hours, and conditions that the Molly Maguire saga began.  Irish immigrants and Irish Americans played key roles in virtually every aspect of the conflict, from the lowliest miner to the most powerful capitalist.  Foremost was Franklin B. Gowen, the wealthy Irish American president of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad. Tough and ambitious, he ruthlessly drove his competitors out of business in an effort to dominate the state’s two principle industries, coal and railroads.  The only thing he hated more than rival businessmen was organized labor, especially the main miners union, the Workingmen’s Benevolent Association (WBA). Led by an Irish-born man named John Siney, the WBA had won several strikes in the late 1860s and early 1870s that resulted in wage gains and union recognition. Even though he shared an Irish heritage with most of his miners, Franklin Gowan had little sympathy for them. In industrializing America, class interests trumped everything, including ethnicity and culture, and Gowan treated his workers like they were the enemy.  Gowan waited for the right moment to attack, and that came in 1873 when the nation plunged into a severe economic depression that lasted until 1877.  The hard times hurt his bottom line, but Gowen saw a silver lining: hard times also provided an opportunity to kill the miners’ union. In January 1875, Gowan announced a steep cut in wages, a move quickly followed by the region’s others coal operators. The wage cuts triggered a massive miners’ strike throughout the region that paralyzed coal production. But Gowen and other operators had prepared for the strike by stockpiling huge coal reserves that allowed them to continue to sell coal and wait out the desperate and half-starved striking miners. The “Long Strike,” as it came to be known, was doomed. It ended after five months in June with a total defeat for the workers and the destruction of the Workingmen’s Benevolent Association (WBA).  And here’s where rural Ireland figured into the story. Embittered by their loss, a group of Irish miners turned to an old custom – extra-legal justice, or vigilantism.  Irish tenant farmers had for centuries used tactics of intimidation, vandalism, and murder to protest landlord abuses, primarily rent hikes or evictions. These types of tactics of resistance by powerless peasants have been called by anthropologist James Scott, “the weapons of the weak.” According to tradition, the original “Molly Maguire” had been a woman who thwarted her landlord’s attempts to evict her during the Famine.  Many of the Irish miners in the Pennsylvania coal fields came from counties in Ireland where periodic agrarian vigilantism was a firmly rooted tradition.  Molly Maguire activity first arose in the anthracite region in the labor disputes of the early 1860s. But it subsided with the WBA’s success in gaining better wages and conditions for the miners. Now in the wake of the defeat in the Long Strike, the Mollies returned with a vengeance.  Between June and September 1875, six people were murdered – all carefully targeted as agents of the mine owners and enemies of the miners. Having destroyed the WBA, Franklin Gowen saw in the return of the Mollies an opportunity to permanently wipe out any miner opposition to his plans to consolidate power and wealth.  And so, he unleashed a sweeping campaign against the secret society in which he branded all labor activists “Molly Maguires.” He also accused an Irish fraternal organization known as the Ancient Order of Hibernians of operating as a front for the organization. Eventually over fifty men, women, and children were arrested and indicted for their alleged roles in the Molly Maguire violence and murders. Incredibly, the state of Pennsylvania played almost no role in this process. None other than Franklin Gowan served as the county district attorney and oversaw the investigation and prosecutions. A private company – the Pinkertons – conducted the investigation. A private police force employed by the mining companies carried out the arrests. And Gowan and coal company attorneys conducted the trials. As one historian commented, “The state only provided the courtroom and the hangman.”  The first trials began in January 1876.  They involved ten men accused of murder and were held in the towns of Mauch Chunk and Pottsville, PA.  A vast army of national media descended on the small towns where they wrote dispatches that were uniformly pro-prosecution. In an era of rising hysteria over labor radicalism, and the growing popularity of socialism and anarchism – much of it fueled by sensational stories in the mainstream press - the Molly Maguire story proved irresistible. And the coverage was universally negative. The NYT, for example, wrote about “the snake of Molly Maguire-ism,” while the Philadelphia Inquirer condemned the men as “enemies of social order.” The key witness for the prosecution was yet another Irishman, James McParlan. He was an agent of the infamous Pinkerton Detective Agency, an organization that would be more accurately described as a private army for hire that specialized in labor espionage and strikebreaking. Franklin Gowan had hired the Pinkertons in the early 1870s as part of his masterplan of destroying the WBA. James McParlan had gone under cover to infiltrate the Mollies and gather evidence. And gather he did – or at least he claimed he did during the trials. On the stand he painted a vivid picture of Molly Maguire secrecy, conspiracy, and murder. With this testimony, combined with the fact that Irish Catholics and miners had been excluded from the juries, guilty verdicts were a foregone conclusion. All ten defendants were convicted and sentenced to hang.  And in order to send the most powerful message to the region’s mining communities, authorities staged the executions on the same day -- June 21, 1877 – in two locations.  Alexander Campbell, Michael Doyle, Edward Kelly, and John Donahue were hanged in Mauch Chuck, while James Boyle, Hugh McGehan, James Carroll, James Roarity, Thomas Duffy, and Thomas Munley met a similar fate in Pottsville.  Although the hangings took place behind prison walls, they were nonetheless stages as major spectacles that drew huge crowds and generated international news coverage, nearly all of it condemning the Mollies as murderous monsters who got what they deserved.  Still, the Molly Maguire episode was far from over.  Ten more miners would be tried, convicted, and executed over the next fifteen months, bringing the total to twenty. While evidence suggests that some of them men were guilty of murder, the great majority of those executed were likely victims of hysteria and a profoundly unjust legal process. In the end, Franklin Gowen and his fellow mine operators succeeded in stamping out the Molly Maguires, but not the violent clashes between labor and capital they represented. For more than a generation following the executions, miners in Pennsylvania and many other states would continue to fight -- both legally and extra-legally -- against oppressive conditions in the mines. And the mine owners, as they did with the Mollies, did their best to dismiss the agitation as foreign radicalism brought to America by misguided immigrants who did not understand the inherent goodness and justice of industrial capitalism. The miners, of course, knew better. They understood that unregulated capitalism, backed by the full weight of the law, the government, and the media, was neither just, nor democratic. It was exploitation, pure and simple. Sources: Anthony Bimba. The Molly Maguires (International Publishers, 1932). Wayne G. Broehl, Jr., The Molly Maguires (Harvard University Press, 1964). The Last of Us is an action-adventure survival horror video game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Players control Joel, a smuggler tasked with escorting a teenage girl named Ellie across a post-apocalyptic United States.   Introductions   Panel   Mighty Q Dawg Twitter: @MightyQDawg   Kathryn Twitter: @k_song   Ryan Twitter: @itsrocketsauce   Cartridge Club Intro/Outro Music Ser Flash Twitter: @Serraxor   Cartridge Club Logo Will Pruitt Twitter: @willopruitt   Level 1   P2(Mark) gives a quick overview of The Last of Us and panel discusses their memories of the game and first impressions.   Developer: Naughty Dog   Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment   Director: Neil Druckmann, Bruce Straley Platform(s): PlayStation 3 PlayStation 4 Release Date: June 14, 2013 Genre: Third Person Shooter   Level 2 Discuss story of the game: Set in the post-apocalyptic United States, the game tells the story of survivors Joel and Ellie as they work together to survive their westward journey across what remains of the country to find a possible cure for the modern fungal plague that has nearly decimated the entire human race.   Characters:   Joel (Troy Baker) - The protagonist of the game. Joel is a survivor of the Cordyceps Brain Infection outbreak, taking residence in the Boston Quarantine Zone. Embittered and hardened by the death of his young daughter Sarah, Joel operates as a black market smuggler, dealing in contraband, taking numerous de-humanizing jobs over the years to survive in this new post-pandemic world. He has only few moral boundaries left to cross. Unfortunately for him, he is thrust into the middle of the nightmare that the world has become, when he is asked by the leader of the Fireflies, Marlene, to look after Ellie. Throughout the game, Joel slowly develops an unbreakable bond with Ellie and a desire to once again open up his emotions that he had suppressed for so many years. Ellie (Ashley Johnson) - The deuteragonist of the game. Ellie is a brave 14-year-old girl that has grown up in this harsh world and it is all she has ever known. Ellie is immune to the Cordyceps strain and because of this, the Fireflies, an anti-government organization, seek to reverse engineer a vaccine through her. She and Joel travel across the post-pandemic United States to reach the Fireflies. She helps the player through the game in many ways, lending a hand in combat and assisting through areas of the game that would otherwise be inaccessible. She frequently expresses curiosity about the remnants of a world that no longer exists. Tess (Annie Wersching) - Tess is Joel's 'partner-in-crime'. They operate in the black market of a city under martial law and have earned a reputation for their ruthless behavior. She and Joel have a trust that runs deeply between them. Tess goes with Joel to drop off Ellie to the Fireflies at the Capitol building in Boston, in exchange for getting back the guns that were stolen from them. Against all odds, the trio make it to the Capitol Building only to find that the Fireflies are dead, and Tess reveals that she was bitten by a Runner an hour before. She holds off some soldiers after she makes Joel promise to bring Ellie to Tommy, Joel's little brother. Bill (W. Earl Brown) - Bill is a paranoid survivor who appears early in the game and helps Joel and Ellie. Bill takes refuge in a town that he has completely booby trapped. He seems to be a bit eccentric, perhaps deranged, but offers to aid Joel and Ellie in finding a car. He is excessively bitter towards Ellie due to the fact that she was hostile towards him from the start. Bill possesses gay pornography, and showed heavy emotion for his friend Frank's death, implying that he was romantically involved with Frank. Marlene (Merle Dandridge) - The leader of the Fireflies and Ellie's surrogate parent. In exchange for their guns back, Marlene tells Tess and Joel to take Ellie to the Fireflies at the Capitol building in Boston. To Marlene, every unethical action she takes can be justified because of her pursuit to save humanity from the infection. She is absent for most of the game and only appears at the end, where she becomes the final antagonist. Tommy (Jeffrey Pierce) - Joel's brother and a former Firefly. The game starts with Tommy helping Joel and Sarah maneuver through the chaotic crowds of both civilians and infected during the initial outbreak. Tommy and Joel reunite later within the game and he reluctantly agrees to help his brother, establishing one of Joel and Ellie's reasons for coming to the University of Eastern Colorado. He is married to Maria. David (Nolan North) - A middle-age survivor and leader of a Cannibals group who appears later in the game and asks for help from Ellie. David is a very manipulative person, seeking to win people over with his superficial mild-mannered appearance, and attempts to convince Ellie to join him. Ellie doesn't buy his attitude and eventually breaks his finger. He finally reveals his true nature to Ellie and even attempts to kill her outright, sending a group of his men to capture her several times throughout the winter section of the game. To David, everything that has happened was for a reason; he believes faith brought him and Ellie to together, and that their encounter was meant to be. He has a very profound effect on Ellie throughout the rest of the game. Henry (Brandon Scott) - An adept survivor, who, with his brother Sam, helps Joel and Ellie in Pittsburgh. He and Joel are initially hostile towards each other, but in the end begin to warm up to each other. However, he commits suicide after having to kill his infected brother. Sam (Nadji Jeter) - Henry's younger brother. Upon meeting, he and Ellie get along almost instantly and continue their easy going relationship throughout the chapter. After he is bitten by an Infected, Ellie is the last person Sam talks to before he turns. He is killed by Henry, who immediately commits suicide out of grief. Sarah (Hana Hayes) - Joel's daughter. She is killed in the prologue when a soldier was instructed to open fire on both her and Joel. Her death causes Joel to become cold, cynical, and brutal over the years.   Discuss gameplay mechanics: Combat (look at all these shoulder height walls) Stealth (but not really it’s just quiet combat) Crafting (favourite items and least favourite) AI (Where did all the promises from E3 2013 go?)   Discuss sound: BGM - thematic and atmospheric or forgettable? Voice acting - Does it get better than this? (Needs more Matt Mercer)   Discuss graphics:   Beautiful scenery Character design The zombies     Level 3 Lasting Impressions, overall rating and final thoughts. Did this make you want to play it again and if not, what would need to be changed? Would you suggest it to friends?   Level 4 3 Word Review #CC3WR from Twitter first followed by panel   Level 5 Outro (thank panel and plug) Announce the game for next month (Kingdom Hearts)

Series: Ruth (Emptied and Filled)Service: Sun PMType: SermonSpeaker: Scott KerchevilleWe can accurately say of Naomi’s life, “When it rains, it pours.” Ruth is a key figure in the Book of Ruth through whom God brings salvation, but the narrative focuses more on the misery and subsequent restoration of Naomi. But what is God’s purpose in focusing on Naomi’s misery and restoration? Like most Biblical narratives, the Holy Spirit inspired this account to do more than retell history, but he does not explicitly tell us what his purposes are. But, when we carefully read between the lines and observe how the Holy Spirit crafts each scene, we can discover the…

The Satellite Sisters re-cap of Madam Secretary Season 2, Episode 13 Madam Secretary   Invasive species! ( I think that's what happened to Lord Granthem on Downtown Abbey!)    Putting the FUN back in Funeral   Very touching, self-contained episode where we get some good background information on henry and we get a superb performance by Kate Burton who NEVER ONCE in her career has played a light-hearted. carefree woman. She is the Queen of Embittered and her role as Henry's oldest sister Maureen is no different.    MSec gets the news that Henry's dad has died and the whole family heads to Pittsburgh -- remember Tom Skerritt in Season 1, union hero and agitator   And things go South right away. there is tension:   The teenagers in the family have no desire to be around the adults.  The siblings all have issues with each other The brother in law doesn't get to speak and noone cares Everyone resents Queen Elizabeth!   The truth comes out and there are consequences. I loved that the teens dug around and discovered the truth-- including PASSWORD.    we learn about the courtship, elizabeths sad and lonely childhood with Eric Stolz, the reason for the tension between academic son and union organizer father. and we learn that elizabeth can put a casket on a credit card and everyone hates her for it...   wrap up grieving in a few scenes.    back at the DOS--  Chief of staff send Nadine on wild goose chase that I'm sure will come back to bite them. All I could think about was that I hope Aaron Tveit who played Danny Zuco in grease would join the MSEC cast and get a bug duet with Patina miller at the karaoke bar!    Bonus!    Eric Stolz on facetime!  Madam Secretary wears casual clothes!

Anne grows up with a repressive mother, a kind stepfather and a grandmother who reads the Bible and takes her to church. Anne wants to be a missionary but secular teachers destroy her faith and she goes to business college instead. Her mother quashes successive attempts to date and then sends Anne to a delinquent girl's school. Embittered, Anne lives to have fun. During the Depression she learns the grocery business, dates Fred, and marries him before he goes off to the war. Her Aunt is saved. When Fred comes home, their marriage falters because of Anne's willfulness. But they remarry and continue to struggle. The first part ends when Anne comes to Christ.
